Malaysia: Brewers anticipating solid earnings driven by the FIFA World Cup tournament
|
Local breweries are anticipating recording solid earnings in the final quarter of this year, driven by the FIFA World Cup tournament next month and the earlier timing of Chinese New Year (CNY) in 2023, The Star reported on October 11.
An analyst from a local bank-backed brokerage said major sporting events like the football World Cup will spur growth in on-trade channels.
“Pubs and even restaurants that sell alcoholic beverages tend to become busy, especially during the World Cup, as people like to watch matches there while drinking and socialising with their friends.”
The FIFA World Cup will be held in Qatar from Nov 20 to Dec 18.
Meanwhile, Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research in a recent report said beer sales, especially in the second half of 2022, are expected to be buoyed by pent-up demand for out-of-home drinking, the return of foreign tourists and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
“The depreciating ringgit will also bode well for local tourism, which should lead to stronger foreign tourist arrivals in the second half of 2022 and boost on-trade sales.”
Additionally, HLIB said it is unconcerned about lingering concerns about demand slowing down, following Heineken Malaysia Bhd’s decision to raise beer prices by 6% to 8% (both

South Africa: 1 in every 66 jobs in South Africa linked to economic activity arising from beer in 2019
|
On 12 September South African Breweries (SAB) launched a research document that detailed the economic impact of the beer sector in South Africa.
The report compiled by Oxford Economics and sponsored by SAB, provides a holistic view of the economic impact of the entire beer sector in the country and is intended to independently quantify just how important the beer sector is and the socio-economic footprint of the beer industry in South Africa, in a technically sound way.
According to Richard Rivett-Carnac, SAB’s CEO quoted in the report’s Forward, “while many previous studies exist showing the sector’s socioeconomic impact in part, none have ever attempted a rigorous, coherent estimate of our impact with the same metrics, at the same point in time.”
Rivett-Carnac continues: “What is apparent from the report is the positive role that beer plays in the South African economy. We have learned things we suspected, but never previously had data to verify: brewing is a highly productive activity, with spill overs of human capital into the wider economy. It underpins jobs and GDP throughout South Africa, both upstream and downstream.
“Using data from 2015-2019, the report concluded that 1 in every 66 jobs in the country has been linked to economic

UK: Heineken’s Caledonian Brewery now on the open market
|
After a long period operating under capacity, Heineken UK announced its proposal to close Caledonian Brewery in Edinburgh in May, The Edinburgh Reporter said on October 8.
At the time it had entered into an agreement in principle with Greene King to continue brewing Caledonian’s brands, including Deuchars and Maltsmiths, at its Belhaven brewery in Dunbar.
The company said it would consult on the proposals with the 30 employees who worked at the brewery and their trade union/colleague representatives.
Matt Callan, Supply Chain Director for HEINEKEN UK said in May: “We’ve not taken this decision lightly. We’re acutely aware of what the brewery represents in Edinburgh, and its role in the history and heritage of brewing in Scotland – this is something we’re incredibly proud of. Our primary focus is the 30 colleagues based there and we’ll now enter into a period of consultation.”
“The sad fact is, its Victorian infrastructure means significant inefficiencies and costs, particularly as it is operating below capacity. To modernise the brewery, and to meet our own sustainability commitments, would require considerable ongoing investment, which would make operating the brewery economically unviable.”
The hope was that the brewery had been saved but Heineken sent a letter to Lothian MSP,

Japan: Alcohol price hikes add to bars’ woes
|
For Kazuo Tachibana, a liquor store owner in Yokohama, the recent widespread price hike on alcohol looks like delivering another blow to a business already taking knocks, the Japan Today reported on October 9.
"Customer spending has fallen from earlier this year, and many people seem much more hesitant to shop," the 81-year-old said before thousands of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages became dearer by an average of 4 to 13 percent, including the first canned beer price rises in 14 years, on Oct 1.
Japan's four major brewers - Asahi Breweries Ltd, Kirin Holdings Co, Suntory Holdings Ltd, and Sapporo Breweries Ltd - and many other smaller outfits have upped asking prices on beverages over increasing input costs as inflation rises in Japan.
Besides familiar factors like rising wheat costs caused by the war in Ukraine, a major exporter of the grain, the jump has been triggered by price hikes on materials like aluminum for cans and higher transportation costs, brewers said.
For consumers, that means almost all alcoholic options are more expensive than they were. According to a Teikoku Databank survey the same day, 105 major food producers slapped an average 16 percent increase on 6,699 products, with 2,991 of them -- 40

Tanzania: Tanzania Breweries committed to working closely with other smaller breweries
|
The Tanzania Breweries Ltd (TBL Plc.) has expressed its commitment to continue working closely and engaging with other smaller breweries so as to promote production of quality products in the country, IPPMedia.com reported on October 8.
TBL managing director, Jose Daniel Moran made the statement when the members of Twiga Brewery visited TBL plant in Arusha for a knowledge exchange session.
He also said the company will also strengthen engagement to support more smallholder farmers of various crops including sorghum and barley.
“These engagements with the representatives of Twiga Brewery are a key part of our role and responsibility as one of the country’s oldest brewing companies and one of Tanzania's most valuable brands. The visit will allow us to exchange ideas, and to better understand the vision of the industry with Twiga,” Moran said.
Plant manager, Joseph Mwaikasu shared a presentation on the plant’s production overview and DPO pillars. Twiga members toured the state-of-the-art facilities the Arusha plant has.
Raphael Flury, Twiga Brewery spokesperson said the visit has been a very valuable opportunity to gain insight into TBL’s operations and explore avenues of cooperation and support in the year to come.
“Extensive sharing of data, information, and practical knowledge will help pinpoint the direction of

USA: Molson Coors asks for new trial after loss in Stone Brewing trademark case
|
Beer giant Molson Coors asked a San Diego federal court on October 6 to throw out a $56 million verdict by a jury that said in March that Molson's "Keystone" branding infringed Stone Brewing Co's trademark, Reuters reported.
Molson requested either a new trial or a court ruling that the verdict was unjustified, arguing that Stone could not show any consumer confusion or establish that it suffered any losses.
A spokesperson for Molson Coors said Friday that it remains "confident" in its case and "committed to seeing it through in the courts."
Stone Brewing, meanwhile, asked for a bench retrial on October 6 on its allegations that Molson Coors used the "Stone" name in bad faith, which could entitle it to increased damages if it wins.
The brewery and its attorneys did not immediately respond to a request for comment on October 7.
Escondido, California-based Stone Brewing sued what was then MillerCoors in 2018, arguing its marketing of Keystone beers that focused on the words "Stone" and "Stones" without "Key" caused consumer confusion and infringed its trademarks.
Stone Brewing told the court that Molson Coors had rebranded Keystone to capitalize on consumer goodwill for Stone, which was then one of America's largest independent craft breweries.

China: New restrictions on drinking in China puts global drinks producers shares under pressure
|
Shares in global drinks producers are coming under pressure due to investor unease about the market in China, The Drinks Business reported on October 11.
The Chinese news website NetEase has reported that the government in Beijing wants to impose new restrictions on civil servants and local government officials from drinking both during and after work in a bid to improve efficiency and productivity.
That sector of the population comprises a large part of the market for imported spirits.
The move has echoes of the crackdown on lavish entertaining and gifting which disrupted sales to China, begun by Beijing a decade ago.
China is the world’s largest market for total beverage alcohol products. However, some 95% of that is accounted for by locally produced baijiu.
As a result of the rumour, shares of Remy Cointreau, which is by far the market leader in China for Cognac, which dominates demand for imported spirits, fell by almost 7% yesterday. Remy Cointreau derives almost 30% of its sales from China.
China is Pernod Ricard’s second largest market after the US, accounting for almost 10% of its annual sales. It saw its shares shed 3.4%, while Diageo, the world’s largest spirits maker, suffered a decline 2.3% on the day.

India: Pernod Ricard asked to pay US$244 mln of import duty
|
Indian authorities have demanded US$244 mln from Pernod Ricard for reportedly avoiding import duties for a decade, The Drinks Business reported on October 10.
According to a notice from India’s customs authority, reported by Reuters, the French drinks giant has been undervaluing concentrate imports for the past 10 years.
The notice, dated 27 June, relates to liquor concentrates imported from a Pernod subsidiary, UK-based Chivas Brothers.
Pernod Ricard has reportedly since challenged the $244m tax demand and an Indian court will hear the case on Tuesday, this week.
According to reports on the notice, Indian authorities inspected the drinks company’s import bills for 2009-10 to 2020-21, and found Pernod Ricard India had undervalued liquor concentrates in its declarations, all of which resulted in the firm paying lower import duty amounts.
The note allegedly states that Pernod Ricard owed additional duty of INR20.1 billion (US$244 million), plus interest, for imports up to 2020.
The 27-page notice revealed that, in order to compensate for the undervalued imports, Pernod Ricard’s India arm had instead paid “hefty” dividends to Pernod Ricard in France. However, import duties on liquor concentrates are 150% while dividends attract lower taxes.
The notice said: “There are ample reasons to doubt the truth or accuracy of the
