UK: Distilleries report peated malt shortage
|
A shortage of a key peated whisky ingredient could make Islay spirits even rarer. Peated malt, which gives select Scotches their distinctive smoky flavor, are becoming increasingly difficult for distilleries to locate, the VinePair reported on October 12.
Port Ellen Maltings, a historic facility on Islay, has provided peated malt to seven surrounding distilleries since 1973. It’s currently owned by spirits conglomerate Diageo, which uses the malt at some of its own distilleries.
High demand for peated malt is lowering the supply available to Scotch producers, according to an Oct. 12 article from Master of Malt. An anonymous source tells the publication that increased demand at Port Ellen may be to blame.
According to the source, Port Ellen’s current clients will receive a less-than-usual supply this year, with non-Diageo client sales restricted in 2023 and beyond. This hasn’t yet been confirmed by the spirits conglomerate; however, Diageo’s head of corporate relations Ian Smith tells Master of Malt that the company is working with affected distilleries.
“We can’t comment on the detail of commercial supply contracts, but it is the case that we have seen significantly increased demand for malted barley from our Port Ellen maltings,” Smith says. “As a result, the maltings are operating

Canada: Beer lovers should brace for price increases – Molson Coors Canada’s chief executive
|
Beer lovers should brace for price increases over the coming months as costs such as shipping continue to climb, Molson Coors Canada’s chief executive says.
“The only thing you need to do is to look at the external environment, and you know that we have no other option than to increase the prices of beer,” president Frederic Landtmeters said on October 12 in an interview at the company’s new Longueuil brewery.
“Inflation is a reality, and we need to adjust our pricing to that reality. But I’m not going to comment on future plans. We’re not prepared to announce that yet.”
Molson Coors said in August it expects “inflationary pressures” in areas such as input materials and transportation costs to weigh on profit margins in the second half of 2022. As a result, CEO Gavin Hattersley told analysts the company would boost U.S. prices by an average of three to five per cent in the fourth quarter, depending on the region. He did not discuss pricing plans for the Canadian market.
About 80 per cent of the company’s revenue — and more than 90 per cent of pretax income — comes from the Americas.

UK: Pubs and brewers warn of possible beer shortages this winter
|
Pubs and brewers have warned beer shortages could hit the UK this winter, The Mail reported on October 13.
Industry experts are calling for the sector to be put on a priority list for gas supplies over the coming months.
The National Grid has previously warned UK homes could be left without power for three hours at a time as blackouts hit this winter.
The alert sparked “calls for certainty of energy supply” from drinks industry chiefs.
Jacob Rees Mogg, business secretary, said priority lists will be reserved for energy-intensive users and for sectors where a loss of energy could lead to a threat to life or damages in excess of £50million.
Jayne Almond, Food and Drink Federation’s director of policy, told The Sun: “We urge Ministers to continue to engage with us to address these issues and any potential disruption to the energy supply.”
Pubs are reportedly planning ways to stay open in the case of blackouts, including being lit by candles or battery lamps.
However, during a blackout, a Budweiser spokesman warned the “beer system may not be able to adequately cool the beer lines, meaning draught beer might not be served during the outage period.”

India: Bira 91 purchases Uttar Pradesh-registered Kamakhya Beer & Bottling Private Limited

Beer company Bira 91, based in New Delhi, has exchanged shares with Chhattisgarh Distilleries Private Limited to purchase Uttar Pradesh-registered brewing company Kamakhya Beer & Bottling Private Limited, the Asia Tech Journal reported on October 10.
Indian liquor producer CDL is the owner of several well-known brands, including Indian No. 1 Magnum Whiskey, Red Indian Rum, and Palm Beach Whiskey.
According to Bira91’s regulatory filings, the firm traded 10,000 of CDL’s Kamakhya Beer shares for INR 22.6 Cr worth of its pre-Series D compulsorily convertible preference shares.
Anuj Jain, Founder of Bira91, said, “We have acquired Kamakhya Beer & Bottling Private limited. The acquisition will help us expand our production capacity and cater to the increasing consumer demand across the region, however, (we) cannot disclose further details at this stage,” Bira91 founder Anuj Jain said.
Additionally, CDL is growing its share in the well-known brewer by investing an extra INR 11.3 Cr in Bira 91.
The purchase will enable Bira 91 to increase its manufacturing capacity and expand its market share in the nation.

Azerbaijan: Carlsberg Azerbaijan planning $14 mln of investments
|
Carlsberg Azerbaijan LLC intends to invest more than 25 million manat ($14 million) in its development and in the Azerbaijani economy, in accordance with the plan for 2021-2025,Managing Director of Carlsberg Azerbaijan LLC Alius Antulis told the Trend.
He said that in the beginning of its activities in Azerbaijan, the company has invested 160 million manat ($94.1 million) in the country's economy.
"The company has already started exporting its production to the neighbouring Georgia. And work on increasing export market continues," Antulis said.
In addition, Antulis stressed that the company plans to completely localize production processes.
"The company wants raw materials and other goods that are necessary for the production to be 100 percent local. In this regard, a cooperation agreement has been reached with Azersheker, which will provide us with malting barley. It's also planned to establish local production of labels and bottles," he added.

Australia: Malting barley export up 15% in August versus July
|
Australia exported tonnes of 106,592 tonnes of malting barley, 495,631t of feed barley and 251,452t of sorghum in August, according to the latest export date from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the Grain Central reported on October 12.
The malting figure is up 15 per cent from the 93,064t shipped in July, and sorghum is up 13pc from 221,986t shipped in the previous month, while the feed figure eased slightly from 497,953t.
On malting, Mexico on 61,939t was the biggest market for August by far, while shipments to Saudi Arabia lifted 100,000t from the July figure to consolidate it as the major destination by far on 322,659t.
On sorghum, China accounted for just about all the August-shipped tonnage, accounting for 241,013t of the total figure.
After much anticipation and considerable bilateral negotiations, India appeared in August for the first time as a malting destination for Australian malting barley.
“The India shipment is notable, as it shows we can export malting barley to India with the new fumigation rules allowing phosphine use in place of the traditional methyl bromide requirement,” Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said.

France: Farmers making swift progress in sowing winter wheat and barley
|
French farmers have almost finished harvesting this year's drought-affected maize crop and are making swift progress in sowing winter wheat and barley, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on October 14.
Farmers had gathered 83% of this year's grain maize crop by Oct. 10, compared with 67% a week earlier and only 14% in the same week last year, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal report.
The harvest remained 28 days ahead of last year's pace and 18 days ahead of the five-year average, it said.
Harvesting started early in late August after an exceptionally hot and dry summer accelerated plant growth.
The harsh weather also stressed crops and is expected to lead to the smallest French maize harvest in three decades.
Soft wheat sowing for next year's harvest accelerated, with 21% of the expected area drilled by Monday, compared with 3% a week earlier and 11% a year ago, FranceAgriMer said.
For winter barley, 37% of the expected crop area had been sown, compared with 8% a week earlier and 22% a year ago.
Dry and mild weather has helped field work since late September, though the return of rain this week could slow progress.
