USA, MO: Blue Jay Brewing Co. to open in Midtown in spring 2023
|
Former Urban Chestnut Brewing Co. head brewer and production manager Jason Thompson, along with Nicole Thompson, will open Blue Jay Brewing Co. in spring 2023 at 2710 Locust St. in Midtown, the Sauce Magazine reported on October 14.
The brewpub is the final tenant to be confirmed at JC Midtown, which is currently in development with forthcoming restaurants including Nexus Cultural Cuisine and Craft Cocktails, Videira Wine Shop & Bar, Kain Tayo and Anita Café.
Jason Thompson joined Urban Chestnut as head brewer around six months after the brewery launched in 2011. Thompson had gained brewing experience working for Gordon Biersch in California, before stints in the Washington, D.C., area and Chicago. As Urban Chestnut expanded, Thompson moved to a role as production manager, before leaving in 2019. After a plan to launch a brewery with a friend in Illinois fell by the wayside, Jason and Nicole decided to open their own brewery. They used the pandemic to flesh out their plans, and it was around this time that they hit on the name for their brewery. “We just kept seeing a family of blue jays in the front yard during the pandemic, we kept seeing them and we came up with

USA, MA: Trillium Brewing Company offering its original Canton facility as turnkey operation
|
Boston-based Trillium Brewing Company is consolidating its production in Massachusetts and offering its original Canton facility as a turnkey operation, Brewbound reported on October 17.
Trillium is moving its brewing operations to its “flagship campus,” part of the former-Reebok campus at 100 Royall Street, the brewery announced today. The company has been renovating the larger location to become its “forever home” since it was acquired in 2019, according to a blog post.
To support the Royall Street expansion, Trillium has acquired the 60-hectoliter (about 50 barrels) brewhouse and “associated infrastructure” of Spencer Brewery.
Spencer, a Trappist brewery operated by monks of St. Joseph’s Abbey, announced it would be ceasing operations in May.
“Commissioning this new system allows us to maintain current beer production during our transition, and this best-in-class equipment means our team can achieve even greater control, creative freedom, and precision,” Trillium co-founder JC Tetreault said in the release. “Having the entire production and quality staff together with the rest of our team greatly improves culture and increases idea sharing, creativity, and the speed at which we can problem solve together.”
Trillium’s Canton location at 110 Shawmut Road has been the brewery’s main production headquarters since December 2015, when the company moved from its

USA, CA: Grav South Brew Co. to close down on November 13
|
Grav South Brew Co., a Cotati brewpub started by a former firefighter who turned his passion for home brewing into a second career, will close Nov. 13, the Press Democrat reported on October 14.
The brewery becomes another notable closure in Sonoma County’s craft beer industry as a result of the economic effects from the COVID-19 pandemic. Steele and Hops, the Santa Rosa restaurant and brewery on Mendocino Avenue, closed July 3 after six years in business. In Marin County, Marin Brewing Co. closed in January as a result of lost income from COVID-19.
“We’ve been trying really hard to recover since the pandemic started. At some point, you got to know when to call it a day,” said Greg Rasmussen, who partnered with friend Corinne Barclay to open Grav South in September 2016.
The brewery had a strong lineup of beers as Rasmussen ― who served as a fire captain with the Forestville Fire Department ― had won 150 medals in brewing competitions before going into the business, including winning the competitive Samuel Adams’ LongShot American Homebrew contest in 2015. Before the pandemic, it also served its own food items.
“The beers were really good. I really liked their dark beers, particularly,” said

EU: Danish brewer Royal Unibrew warns surging costs will push people towards cheaper drinks
|
Shares in European brewers slid on October 19 after a warning that surging costs will push people to go for cheaper drinks, Bloomberg reported.
Danish brewer Royal Unibrew A/S said it’s experiencing unprecedented inflation and will pass on rising prices to customers as fast as possible into next year. It cut its full-year outlook, sending its shares tumbling 13% to the lowest since the pandemic struck, and dragging down bigger peers such as Carlsberg A/S and Heineken NV.
Consumer firms have managed to largely protect margins this year by raising prices to cope with soaring costs. But there’s a limit to how much customers may be able to handle that as rampant inflation and higher food and energy costs destroy discretionary purchasing power.
“Premium products will likely be consumed by less consumers and at less occasions,” Unibrew said, adding that “below mainstream” products would gain share.
That outlook rippled through major brewers, who will report third-quarter earnings next week. Carlsberg slid as much as 4.8%, Heineken dropped 3.5% and Anheuser-Busch InBev fell 2.4% in early trading.
Unibrew pointed to a worsening of the business environment in recent weeks, with high electricity bills in particular hurting bars, restaurants and consumers. Nordea Research, which downgraded its recommendation

UK: Planned alcohol duty freeze cancelled
|
The UK government has cancelled a planned freeze on alcohol duty in an “extremely disappointing” move for the drinks trade, The Drinks Business reported on October 18.
The alcohol duty freeze had been due to take effect from February 2023.
However, on Monday (17 October), newly appointed UK chancellor Jeremy Hunt confirmed the freeze would no longer happen. The U-turn is expected to save the government £600 million (US$677m) a year.
Instead, alcohol duty will rise in line with inflation.
The chancellor scrapped almost all of prime minister Liz Truss’s tax cuts that had been announced in the mini-budget last month.
Miles Beale, chief executive of the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA), said: “The news that the latest chancellor has scrapped the freeze to alcohol duty is extremely disappointing. This is yet another change of plans, which will cause disruption to UK wine and spirit businesses who have spent the last two years being bounced from one crisis to the next.
“Raising taxes is not only bad news for consumers worried about the cost of living, but also stifles growth and innovation for British businesses trying to recover from the pandemic and supply chain issues.
“History has shown that freezing alcohol duty does not have a

Belgium: Alken-Maes brewery calls on bar goers to stop stealing beer glasses
|
The Alken-Maes brewery is calling on bar goers to stop stealing beer glasses after a bar visit, stating that glass production has become very expensive, and beer glasses are gradually becoming scarce, The Brussels Times reported on October 18.
The brewery, which is known for Cristal and Maes beers, among others, is fed up with the frequent stealing of beer glasses. The brewery's bars are still getting enough supplies, but are asked to "be economical" with them.
"The price of glass has increased enormously because its production is hugely energy-intensive," Sebastiaan De Meester, spokesperson for the brewery, said on Flemish radio. "There is also scarcity and due to the Ukraine-Russia conflict, more production has stopped in Ukraine and the market is under pressure."
While the brewery added that there are enough glasses to supply all regular bars for the time being, one phenomenon only adds to the scarcity: clients taking beer glasses home. "People like to take home a souvenir, especially if it is a nice glass. So bar owners had best be economical with their glasses and keep a close eye on them."
The beer glass of the new Cristal Xtra (short, ribbed glasses), but also the so-called "boerkes" (plain beer glasses with

India: Craft brewer Bira 91 to buy beverage chain operator The Beer Cafe
|
Sequoia Capital-backed Bira 91 said on October 12 it will buy beverage chain operator The Beer Cafe for an undisclosed price, giving the Indian craft beer maker access to more restaurants and pubs as dining out becomes a preferred option again, Reuters reported.
Started in 2015, Bira is one of India's most popular craft beer makers and is backed by Japan's Kirin Holdings and Belgium's Sofina. It competes with international brands such as Carlsberg as well as Heineken-owned and United Breweries.
The deal comes during the festival season in the South Asian country, with more people stepping out for socialising and dining after being forced to stay largely indoors for nearly two years of the pandemic.
Beer Cafe's chief executive officer, Rahul Singh, will lead the brand's operations, the companies said in a statement.
"We will be making some new private-label beers at Bira breweries,” Singh told Reuters, adding that the deal with Bira was an all-stock deal.

UK: Beer shortage looming as drivers planning five days of strike
|
The prospect of a UK beer shortage is looming as drivers and workers at a firm that makes about 40% of deliveries to UK pubs and clubs are to stage five days of strike action over pay and job cuts, The Guardian reported on October 18.
About 1,000 drivers and dray workers – a person who delivers beer for a brewery – at GXO Logistics plan to stage a first round of strikes between 31 October and 4 November at depots across the UK.
The Unite union said the strike would “impede the ability of pubs and other venues to replenish their cellars prior to the World Cup”. Further action was planned for closer to kick-off on 20 November if the dispute was not resolved, it said.
The strikes would affect pubs and venues supplied by brewers including Heineken, Stonegate, Admiral Taverns and Shepherd Neame.
GXO Logistics delivers to about 4,500 pubs in London and south-east England and has a network of 22 depots from Inverness to Southampton where rolling strike action will take place. A ban on overtime working will come into force from 24 October.
The company said it had plans in place to ensure pubs and venues did not run dry if
