Brewery news Mexico: Craft beer industry should grow by over 10% this year - ACERMEX
Mexico's craft beer industry should grow by over 10% this year, the country's brewing association ACERMEX said on October 21, even as it faces sky-rocketing costs and competition from European-owned heavyweights, Reuters reported.

"The effects of the pandemic, added to the war between Russia and Ukraine ... have caused costs to skyrocket," ACERMEX official Jose Rosas told Reuters.

"Most of the supplies for independent beer producers are imported, so the rising exchange rate is a problem and also the supplies are expensive due to shortages."

Nevertheless, ACERMEX expects craft beer production in the country to grow 11% this year to reach about 34 million litres (59 million UK pints), with close to 90% consumed locally, or in the same state in which it was brewed.

The trade group estimates Mexican craft brewers last year produced 30 million litres (53 million pints) of the estimated 13.5 billion litres of beer brewed nationwide.

ACERMEX data shows this earned them almost 2 billion pesos ($100 million) in sales.

It said craft brewers also faced pressure from large industrial breweries expanding in the country. The market is dominated by Dutch giant Heineken and Grupo Modelo, owned by Belgian giant AB InBev.

Heineken announced in June it would build a 1.8 billion ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Hot Plate Brewery to debut in Pittsfield this winter
Hot Plate Brewery will make its debut in Downtown Pittsfield this winter, iBerkshires.com reported on October 22.

Brooklyn, N.Y., transplants Mike Dell'Aquila and Sarah Real are planning a soft opening in December and a grand opening in early 2023.

"One of the things we believe in craft beer is that it brings people together, and we wanted to build a brewery that could really take that to the fullest extent of the idea," Dell'Aquila said.

"So what we like about coming here is that there are so many nonprofits we can support, there are so many small businesses that we can help cross-promote and there was just this real, I think, energy that we found from a lot of people trying to revitalize Downtown Pittsfield, and we thought that we could very much kind of join that cause."

Located on the ground floor of the Onota Building on School Street, the brewery is being built out and plans to start producing in November.

Dell'Aquila and Real first looked into opening their business in the Berkshires two years ago after finding that the region is underserved from a craft beer perspective. Both have marketing backgrounds and channeled those skills into this venture.

"When you ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Beer Thug Brewing Co. coming to Bell in November
Edgar Preciado, founder of BeerThugLife LLC., announces the official opening of Beer Thug Brewing Co. in the city of Bell, CA. Mr. Preciado will be opening a brewery and taproom via an alternate proprietorship with Border X Brewing located at 4400 E Gage Ave, Bell, CA 90201, The Full Pint reported on October 24.

Joining forces with Border X Brewing and Mujeres Brew House, the addition of Beer Thug Brewing Co. will contribute to the palate of Latinx craft beer culture. Each of the three brewing companies will add to the diverse Latinx landscape offering beer, food, music, and aesthetics reminiscent of traditional, contemporary, and postmodern Latinx culture.

With plans to open this November, it is with the utmost importance that Beer Thug Brewing and Mr. Preciado contribute to the diverse landscape of Los Angeles by offering an inclusive atmosphere where the only criteria for entry is one’s appreciation for delicious, craft beer.

Mr. Preciado began his venture into the craft beer industry in 2018 after he recorded a video of him chugging a triple, hazy IPA from Monkish Brewing on a drunken night. Prefacing the chug with a raunchy quip, the video on Instagram would end up garnering thousands of views. It ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Side Launch Brewing Co. acquired by Ontario-based Equals Brewing
Collingwood brewery Side Launch Brewing Co. has been acquired by Ontario-based Equals Brewing in a deal that will see both brands maintain their flagship locations, CollingwoodToday.ca reported on October 21.

“Having been in the industry for so long and knowing the history of Side Launch and the history of the beers and the location in Collingwood, they’ve always been an admirable craft brewer, in my opinion,” said Justin McKellar, president of Equals Brewing in London. “As we were looking at potential partnerships and ways to grow our brand, Side Launch was honestly at the top of our list from the beginning.”

Equals Brewing Company was established in 2018 and is now a contract manufacturing partner for beer, cider, pre-mixed cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages. Prior to this acquisition, the Equals-branded business consisted of Bangarang Hard Seltzer and Shake Lager.

As part of the acquisition, McKellar said the Side Launch brewery and taproom in Collingwood and the Equal Brewing facilities in London will both stay open, with plans to maintain existing brews and bring back some old favourites such as Side Launch Passionate Sour.

“Side Launch produced great-tasting kettle sours. We want to bring back those brands that were very successful,” said McKellar.

McKellar said discussions with ...More info on site

Brewery news China: China Resources Beer Holdings agrees to take 55.19% stake in liquor maker Guizhou Jinsha Jiaojiu Winery Industry Co
China Resources Beer Holdings said on October 25 its unit agreed to obtain 55.19% stake in Chinese colourless liquor maker Guizhou Jinsha Jiaojiu Winery Industry Co for about $1.68 billion, as it diversifies alcohol businesses with non-beer assets, Nasdaq reported.

China Resources Wine Holdings Limited would boost capital in Jinsha Jiaojiu by 1.03 billion yuan ($140.93 million), after which it would hold 4.61% stake in the maker of Chinese colourless "baijiu", and then acquire another 50.58% stake for 11.27 billion yuan, China Resources Beer said in a filing.

The acquisition is pending government regulatory approval, China Resources Beer said.

China Resources Wine Holdings agreed to boost capital in Shandong Jingzhi Baijiu, another Chinese colourless liquor manufacturer, China Resources Beer said in August 2021, without disclosing the size of the transaction.

Barley news Ukraine & Russia: Ukraine says Russia blocking full realisation of Grain Initiative
Ukraine said seven vessels sailed off from its ports on October 23 carrying grain bound for Asia and Europe, but accused Russia of blocking the full implementation of Black Sea grain deal, Reuters reported.

"Russia is deliberately blocking the full realisation of the Grain Initiative. As a result, these (Ukrainian) ports in the last few days are working only at 25-30 percent of their capacity," Ukraine's Infrastructure Ministry said in a statement via the Telegram messaging app.

The agreement, brokered by the United Nations and Turkey in July, paved the way for Ukraine to resume grain exports from Black Sea ports that had been shut since Russia invaded. Moscow won guarantees for its own grain and fertiliser exports.

Ukraine called for the renewal of the deal but concerns over whether Russia will agree to an extension beyond the Nov. 19 deadline has intensified after Russia has repeatedly raised complaints about its implementation.

Gennady Gatilov, Russia's ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, last week told Reuters that Moscow had delivered a letter to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres setting out a list of complaints.

Among the ships that departed on October 23 included one chartered by the U.N. World Food Programme, carrying 40,000 tonnes of ...More info on site
