Canada, ON: Muskoka Brewery announces acquisition of Rally Beer Company
|
Muskoka Brewery has announced the purchase of Rally Beer Company, a deal that “brings together two businesses with a shared commitment to quality, innovation, and a love for the outdoors”, the Canadian Beer News reported on November 2.
Founded in 2020, Rally is focussed on “functional beverages”, with its flagship Trail Blazer Golden Ale touted as being “Canada’s first ever functional beer purpose-brewed to be rich in electrolytes.”
“Rally has pioneered the concept of functional beer in Canada, and we are so excited to be a part of what they have built,” says Todd Lewin, President of Muskoka Brewery, in a statement. “We are looking forward to bringing together two brands that have championed outdoors inspired beverages and make beer more approachable for all.”
“This is certainly an exciting time for myself and Rally Beer,” says Alan Wood, Founder of Rally Beer Company. “My mission was always to inspire as many people as possible to get outside, be active and grow the community through our brand. USA, CT: Keurig Dr Pepper invests in non-alcoholic craft beer maker Athletic Brewing Company
|
Keurig Dr Pepper, the beverage giant that owns brands like 7-Up, Snapple and Swiss Miss hot chocolate, announced on November 10 it’s investing $50 mln in Athletic Brewing Company, the US’ top non-alcoholic craft beer maker, Bloomberg reported.
The move will position Keurig Dr Pepper as a leading investor in the company, alongside others including TRB Advisors and Alliance Consumer Growth. The company will secure a seat on the brewer’s board of directors as part of the deal; other details about the agreement have not been disclosed.
The investment is one indicator among many that the outlook is bright for the low- and zero-ABV beverage category, which has seen impressive growth over the last few years as consumers dabble in the ‘sober-curious’ movement. This year, off-premise sales of non-alcoholic beers are projected to hit $361m in 2021 – almost double that of 2019 pre-pandemic levels, per data from Beverage Marketing Corp. When factoring in sales made at bars, restaurants and online, the total number of such sales is likely closer to $500m.

USA, TX: Talyard Brewing Co. breaks ground on new production and taproom facility in Sugar Land
|
Talyard Brewing Co. has broken ground on a 15,000-square-foot production and taproom facility in Sugar Land’s Imperial neighborhood, the Community Impact Newspaper reported on November 9.
The brewery broke ground Nov. 7 on a 3.5-acre site at 1033 Imperial Blvd., Sugar Land, with an opening projected for early 2024, according to a Nov. 7 announcement.
Once open, the brewery will feature a 20-barrel brewhouse with an annual production capacity of 10,000 barrels, according to the announcement. The facility will have floor space reserved for foeders, a type of large oak beer barrels, and an eventual barrel-aging program. Guests will be able to sample the brews at a family- and pet-friendly beer garden that comprises over an acre of shaded seating, pickleball courts, a playground, backyard games and a stage for live entertainment, according to the announcement.
“We want to push the boundaries of style and tradition by combining old practices and new,” owning principal Keith Teague said.

USA, CO: Epic Brewing to close its Denver location before the end of the year

After nine years of operating as one of the pioneer breweries in Denver’s RiNo neighborhood, Epic Brewing will close its Denver location before the end of the year, PorchDrinking.com reported on November 9.
Opening just a year after River North Brewery, Our Mutual Friend Brewing, and Black Shirt Brewery, Epic Brewing joined a groundswell of craft beer producers to transform the North side of Denver into one of the most heavily saturated craft brewery neighborhoods in the country.
Founded in 2010 in Salt Lake City, UT, by David Cole, Epic Brewing saw rapid growth early in its existence. In addition to opening its 19,000 sq ft Denver taproom and brewery in 2013, Epic had acquired Santa Barbara’s Telegraph Brewing in 2017 and became a regional contender could produce a wide range of styles from classics like Lagers, Saisons, and IPAs to more specialty expressions like fruited Sours and barrel-aged Stouts. However, a more saturated Denver market, combined with the onset of the pandemic, deeply cut into draft account sales, and inflation-related expenses around freight and material goods lead to the difficult decision to re-evaluate their Denver footprint.

USA, OR: Sasquatch Brewing’s Northwest Portland brewery and cidery to shut down
|
Sasquatch Brewing on November 10 announced it is closing its Northwest Portland production brewery and its cidery, which produces companion brand New West Cider, but it will keep its Hillsdale neighborhood restaurant open, the Oregon Live reported.
“All good things must end,” co-founders Tom Sims and Alex Beard said on Sasquatch’s social media channels. “While we’ll certainly miss all our friends and customers, we think it’s the right time to move on to other ventures.”
Reached by phone Thursday afternoon, Sims said he was relieved that “the struggle is over.”
“We’ve been trying so hard,” he said. “I’ve never worked harder than over COVID. You expect you can ease up, and it hasn’t eased up at all.”
He said profitability was the primary reason for shutting down production.
“With the rising costs of everything, things didn’t come back from COVID the way we expected,” he said. “The taproom in (the Northwest industrial district) was doing half the business from before. There’s just nobody down there working the way they used to be.
“Costs of materials has just gone crazy, and they’re going to get more crazy,” he continued. “Aluminum cans are going up, everything’s going up.”

UK: Sale of Eagle Brewery ‘highlights dominance of global brewers in the UK’, CAMRA says
|
The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has reacted to the recent news of Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) selling the Bedford-based Eagle Brewery, stating it ‘highlights the dominance of global brewers in the UK and further squeezes small, independent brewers’, the Morning Advertiser reported on November 8.
Spanish brewer SA Damm acquired the Eagle Brewery from CMBC for an undisclosed sum, it was revealed this week.
The announcement also said as part of the deal, the Eagle Brewery’s beers will continue to be sold as part of CMBC’s portfolio.
Furthermore, all 67 production employees at the brewery will transfer over to Damm’s UK workforce.
This followed CMBC’s announcement in September that it was closing Jennings Brewery in Cockermouth, Cumbria.
Moreover, at the end of last year (December), CMBC revealed it had closed London Fields Brewery, shutting the taproom and ceasing brewing as it looked to sell the site and brand.
This was in addition to other deals cited by CAMRA including London-based Fullers being passed into the ownership of Asahi alongside many smaller independent breweries being swallowed up by global brewing giants.
CAMRA claimed the recent announcements are a ‘continuing sign of the difficulty UK-owned breweries are finding in competing against a few huge global brewing giants’.

India: India expected to be among top three markets for Budweiser in the next three years
|
AB InBev has stated that it expects India to be among the top three markets for Budweiser in the next three years, The Drinks Business reported on November 10.
Speaking this week, AB InBev president – India & South East Asia Kartikeya Sharma said that the prediction was led by double-digit growth in the premium beer segment.
Sharna told local reporters: “We think India could become a top three market for Budweiser in the next three years. By 2025, I would be very surprised if it does not become.”
India is currently already among the top five global markets for the Budweiser brand and AB InBev expects Bud to have achieved approximately Rs 1,800 crore in sales this year.
Additionally, there are also plans in place to increase the localisation of AB InBev’s Corona and Hoegaarden beer brands.
Despite Corona and Hoegaarden being smaller in scale, their contribution to AB InBev India’s top line is still significant with them collectively representing double-digits very soon. India: AB InBev launches Budweiser Magnum Double Barrel Whiskey in India
|
Beer giant AB InBev (maker of Budweiser, Beck’s, Corona, Hoegaarden etc) has announced an India-first innovation, launching Budweiser Magnum Double Barrel Whiskey in one of the largest global whiskey markets, the Drum reported on November 11.
As the second largest spirits market in the world (10% of global spirits consumption happens there), India’s alcohol industry presents a very attractive economic opportunity. There is strong appetite (or thirst in this case) for a wide range of spirit options, as indicated by the growth of the vodka and gin categories, but it is whiskey that rules the roost and accounts for over 70% of spirits consumption in the country.
Vineet Sharma, vice-president of marketing for South Asia at AB InBev, says: “While the Indian alcohol industry is extremely competitive with legacy brands and newcomers alike, there is a huge opportunity for premium offerings across the category, as the trends show.” As a result, India is a lucrative ground for innovations, across price points and categories, he adds.
From Budweiser’s point of view, India is one of its top five markets globally and its aim is to lead premium category growth across beverage segments, with the slew of offerings and innovations, says Sharma.

Ireland: Heineken to increase price of its kegs next month
|
Heineken Ireland, one of the largest suppliers of beer and cider in the country, has informed pub landlords that it will increase the price of its kegs next month, the Business Plus reported on November 10.
In a letter to publicans, the brewer said the price of wholesale draught products would increase by 9% from 1 December, blaming "unprecedented cost increases" across its entire supply chain.
Keg prices for Heineken and Coors lager will increase by the equivalent of 17 cent per pint, while all other draught brands and keg sizes will increase in price at a pro-rata rate.
"This increase is essential for us to offset, in part, the severe cost input pressure and ensure that Heineken Ireland remains as active as ever in supporting you through our brand activities, our direct support to you in the trade, and our commitment to advertising and promotional spend," the group wrote.
Heineken said it would not pass on the full impact of cost rises for its Irish business, adding that it "sets the wholesale price that is charged for its products but has no role in relation to the price paid by the consumer, as this is set by individual operators within the on-trade sector."
