USA: Beer industry sees consumption increase 0.7% in 2021
|
The U.S. beer industry achieved volume consumption growth of 0.7% in 2021 to 2.85 billion 2.25-gallon cases, according to the 2022 Beer Handbook.
This positive shift can be primarily attributed to the growth within the flavored malt beverages, imports and craft categories, as all other beer segments posted losses.
Although the hard seltzers sub-segment within FMBs experienced a significant deceleration versus the meteoric rise of the past few years, the overall category did have brands that continued to drive growth.
During the past 10 years, volume consumption within the beer industry has declined. The beer category remains in a precarious position. Perhaps more so than any other category, it has been changed by Covid-19. Big brands have been shrinking for years. Before the pandemic, craft enjoyed rapid growth, fueled by consumer experimentation and reliant on taprooms and the on-premise.
Then Covid closed the on-premise dealing a blow to craft, and other beer segments as well, that it’s still trying to recover from. Consumer preferences have changed and have so far not reverted to pre-Covid.

Japan: Beer, quasi-beer sales down 32% in October
|
Sales of beer and quasi-beer beverages in Japan fell 32% in October from a year before after surging in September ahead of price hikes on Oct. 1, estimates from Kirin Brewery and others showed.
October marked the first decrease in beer and quasi-beer sales in three months. Sales decreased about 30% both for household consumption and for restaurants and bars.
By maker, sales volume was down 35% at Sapporo Breweries and 33% at Kirin. In value, sales by Asahi Breweries declined 29%.
Suntory saw beer sales rise year on year, thanks to an over twofold increase in sales of its Perfect Suntory Beer. The company renewed the product while keeping the price unchanged for the canned version.
Sales of the canned version of Kirin’s Spring Valley beer product rose more than 40%.

USA: Constellation Brands succeeds in ending its B class of shares
|
Drinks giant Constellation Brands has succeeded in ending its B class of shares which carried 10 times the vote of ordinary shares in a coup for equal voting rights, The Drinks Business reported on November 14.
As predicted by The Drinks Business, shareholders have approved Constellation’s plan to eliminate the B class of shares which carried 10 times the votes of ordinary shares and effectively gave the Sands family vetoing powers in the company’s direction.
All shares will now confer equal voting rights, reducing the Sands’ bloc to below 20% from the 60% they held under the dual-class system.
In addition, executive chairman Robert Sands and his brother, executive vice chairman Richard Sands, will retire and become non-executive members.
More than 75% of shareholders approved the plan.
The move will enhance the popularity of Constellation’s shares as investors tend to avoid dual structures and unequal voting rights. It will also enable the company to consider using share issues in any future merger or acquisition negotiations.
Converting the super-voting shares, however, will cost existing shareholders some US$1.5 billion in compensation, As new shares will be created , existing Class A shareholders will have their holdings diluted.

Zimbabwe: Innscor Africa Holdings to invest in beer manufacturing plant under its Buffalo Brewing brand
|
Zimbabwe Stock Exchange-listed Innscor Africa Holdings is spending US$56 million for the coming year on new projects which include a beer manufacturing plant under its Buffalo Brewing Company (Buffalo), the Pindula News reported on November 12.
This comes after Innscor spent US$70 million on new investments last year, according to newZWire.
More funds are expected to be injected into the alcohol unit in the near future, NewsDay reported quoting Buffalo managing director Richard Mann.
The development is set to challenge Delta Beverages’ decades-long monopoly in the beverage sector on the Zimbabwean market.
Richard Mann told NewsDay that they were planning to break into the sorghum beer market with the Nyathi sorghum beer brand. Mann said:
“We are not yet in the market, but we expect to have our product in the market in December. The alcohol category is very broad. Sorghum and clear beer is common in the southern African region. Clear beer is not a segment of the category. There are some great clear beer brands out there that we would need to compete with.”

Ireland: Government not planning alcohol excise duty reduction
|
Ireland’s government has said it has no plans to reduce excise duty on alcohol after Heineken announced it was upping its prices, TheJournal.ie reported on November 11.
The company announced on November 10 that it is increasing the price of its kegs by 9% due to “significant increases in the cost of energy, packaging, and raw materials.”
The increase is equivalent to a 17 cent rise in the price of a pint, before VAT.
It came as a surprise to many publicans, with The Vintners’ Federation of Ireland saying its members were “extremely concerned about this price rise.”
“There is never a good time for such a price increase, but in the current climate where everyone is feeling the impact of soaring costs this is particularly poor timing,” Vintners’ CEO Paul Clancy said.
“Due to the cost of doing business, most publicans will have to pass on the price increase to their customers.”
Speaking to reporters in Blackpool on November 11, Taoiseach Micheál Martin ruled out an excise cut on alcohol.

Thailand: Brewpubs to benefit the most from new alcohol laws in Thailand
|
Pubs in Thailand that want to brew their own craft beers will benefit the most from the government’s new alcohol proclamation, which went into effect on November 2, the Chiang Rai Times reported.
According to a professor specializing in the liquor industry, their number is expected to grow, while small investors who want to produce liquor or beer will find it difficult to enter the market due to new restrictions imposed by the proclamation.
According to Assistant Professor Charoen Charoenchai of the Rajamangala University of Thanyaburi’s Faculty of Agricultural Technology, the proclamation gives the impression that the state has removed several restrictions, allowing individuals to produce alcoholic beverages for household consumption and commercial purposes, in an attempt to break up the liquor production oligopoly.
For example, he stated that restrictions on minimum registered capital and minimum amount of production for new investors had been lifted, but new restrictions have been imposed, such as the requirement for new investors to conduct environmental impact assessment studies and install standard machinery that records tax payments for the alcoholic beverages they produce.

UK: British Beer and Pub Association urges for tax break reinstatement
|
The British Beer and Pub Association has urged the government to reinstate the tax break announced by former premier Liz Truss and scrapped by the new management of Rishi Sunak. The annual increase in the pint is 8%, The Times Hub reported on November 13.
British pubs want the government to help them keep pint prices affordable this Christmas as rising inflation is driving up business costs and making it harder to purchasing power of consumers.
In a letter dated 11 November to Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt, the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) called on the government to re-freeze the tax on beer in its November 17 budget announcement.
“We need the beer tax freeze reinstated to ease at least some of the cost pressure on our bars and brewers and to prevent crucial alcohol tax reform measures from being undermined,” BBPA Chief Executive Emma McClarkin said in a statement.
The freeze, which was due to take effect from February, was lifted as part of measures taken by Hunt last month passed to remove tax cuts put in place by former Prime Minister Liz Truss and reduce her massive energy subsidy.

As of November 10, agricultural enterprises harvested 36.1 million tons of grain and leguminous crops from an area of 8.5 million hectares (76%) with a yield of 42.4 tons per hectare.
This is stated in the message of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
In particular, 4.7 million hectares of wheat were threshed (100%), with a yield of 41.2 tons per hectare, 19.4 million tons were threshed; 1.6 million hectares of barley were threshed (100%), with a yield of 35.1 tons per hectare, 5.6 million tons were threshed; 111,500 hectares of peas were threshed (100%), with a yield of 23.4 tons per hectare, 261,000 tons were threshed; 1.6 million hectares (39%) of corn were threshed for grain, with a yield of 58.3 tons per hectare, 9.6 million tons were threshed; buckwheat was threshed on 112,000 hectares (95%), with a yield of 13.6 tons per hectare, 153,000 tons were threshed; millet was threshed on 42,600 hectares (95%), with a yield of 23.1 tons per hectare, 98,000 tons were threshed.

France: Winter barley planted on 88% of projected area by November 7
|
By Nov. 7 farmers in France had planted 92% of the expected soft wheat area while 97% of the anticipated winter barley had been sown, FranceAgriMer said in its cereal crop progress report.
Emergence of soft wheat and winter barley crops was running about a week ahead of the usual pace, reflecting the effect of an exceptionally warm October in the European Union's biggest grain producer.
Soft wheat had emerged from the ground on about 76% of the expected area by Nov. 7, up from 61% a year ago and six days ahead of the average development pace of the past five years, FranceAgriMer said.
Winter barley had emerged on 88% of the projected area, with crops running seven days ahead of the five-year average.
Durum wheat sowing was 50% complete, against 36% a year earlier, while 13% of durum crops had emerged, compared with 4% a year ago.
Harvesting of grain maize had ended after being 99% complete the previous week.
FranceAgriMer maintained its estimate that the harvest was 18 days ahead of the five-year average while crop conditions had their lowest rating in data going back to 2011.

Japan: Kirin Brewery expands export of its Japanese Whiskeys
|
Kirin Brewery Company has begun exporting two of its Japanese Whiskeys to Singapore, while a third has made its debut in the US and Australia, The Drinks Business reported on November 11.
Mt. Fuji Distillery, owned by Kirin, is one of the few distilleries in the world capable of producing both malt and grain-based whiskeys, and which has the know-how to cover four of the world’s five major whiskey categories; Scotch whisky, American whisky, Canadian whisky, Japanese whisky, and Irish whisky.
Kirin Single Grain Japanese Whiskey Fuji, which launched in 2020, has received worldwide acclaim and its sales volume in 2021 grew significantly both in Japan and overseas, more than tripling in Japan and multiplying by 20 times overseas.
In the US, where Kirin Single Blended Fuji has been sold for some time, the product has until now been available in eight states, but as of September, its presence has expanded to 19 states.
According to the producer, Kirin Single Blended Japanese Whiskey Fuji is a new style unique to Mt. Fuji Distillery, which produces malt and grain at the same site. As it revealed, exports of the Fuji brand in September were very strong, approximately 2.5 times the previous year’s total.
