USA: Brewing industry still facing higher costs for key inputs
|
The brewing industry is still facing higher costs for key inputs, such as packaging and carbon dioxide, and that has beer makers concerned, Yahoo Finance reported on November 20.
The cost of carbon dioxide alone rose 28% year-over-year in October, according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) data. While prices for the key beer ingredient did come down slightly month-over-month, the CO2 shortage hasn't yet abated.
"We can't make beer without CO2," Denver Beer Co. Co-Founder Patrick Crawford told Yahoo Finance in late September. "It is one of our main ingredients, right after barley, water, and hops."
Beer, food, and beverage distributors are all finding themselves in the same predicament as they compete for a scarce supply of the gas necessary to process and preserve their products.
Experts cite industrial plant shutdowns, supply chain slowdowns, and even contamination in a volcano's natural supply of carbon dioxide as reasons for the shortage. Strong demand for bubbly beverages in summer has also contributed to the tight supply.
This isn't the first time the brewers were forced to pivot this year. The industry has had to maneuver heightened material costs and aluminum shortages that took hold during the pandemic but accelerated in 2022.

South Africa: Beer sector continues to play significant role in stimulating South Africa’s economy
|
A study on the impact of the beer sector in South Africa has determined that the industry, which has recovered to pre-Covid levels, continues to play a significant role in stimulating the economy, the Money Web reported on November 23.
The 2019 report, which recorded the industry’s standard performance before the wake of the pandemic, was presented during a media briefing on Tuesday, to parallel the industry’s current influence on the country since its recovery.
The study, conducted and compiled by Oxford Economics, used three metrics – gross value added (GVA), employment and tax revenue for government – to determine the sector’s influence on the economy. It notes that most of the findings are based on the local production and sale of beer.
The study estimates that in 2019 the sector contributed R71 billion in GVA towards South Africa’s GDP and R43 billion in taxes.
“Of the R71 billion GVA contribution to GDP, R25 billion or 35% came from the direct channel, R30 billion or 42% came from the indirect channel and R16 billion or 23% came from the induced channel,” notes Oxford Economics’ director of economic impact consulting (Europe and Middle East), Pete Collings.

Craft beer company Bira 91 has announced that it has raised $70 million in Series D funding, in a round led by leading Japanese beer company - Kirin Holdings, Business Today reported on November 22.
The funds will be deployed to expand production capacity by commissioning new breweries and expanding its existing facilities, the company said in a statement. It added that the capital will also be utilised to increase the company’s distribution footprint across the country and internationally, and further bolster Bira 91’s product development and innovation capabilities.
Hiromasa Honda, Managing Director, Kirin Holdings Singapore, said, "As the fifth largest economy in the world, with increasing digitalisation, and a stable, growth-oriented government, we are very excited to invest further in the “Make in India” journey for the country. We believe that Bira 91 has the potential to premiumise Indian beer through innovation by brewing the highest quality products for the country’s consumers. Bahamas: Commonwealth Brewery posts B$2.2 mln net profit growth in Q3
|
Commonwealth Brewery says that it saw its operating expenses increase by 16 percent to B$27 mln for its third quarter, which saw the BISX-listed brewer post a B$2.2 million net profit growth, the Eyewitness News reported on November 21.
Commonwealth Brewery in its third quarter financials said that it continued to see strong growth in net revenue during the quarter ending September 2022 30, with an 11 percent net revenue growth when compared to the same period of 2021.
“The company’s expectation is that growth will continue for the remainder of the year as the pandemic-related restrictions are more relaxed and the economy recovers, albeit ongoing inflation is challenging full recovery,” the statement read.
“The hotel and on-trade channels have demonstrated rapid improvement driven by increased tourism and acceleration of on-premise consumption with the return of events and nightlife occasions. Going into the fourth quarter of the year, the Company anticipates that with the approach of the festive season there will be a continued growth of revenue.”
The company noted that its operating expenses have increased to B$27 million for the quarter, a 16 percent increase which is reflective of the ongoing inflationary pressure.

Vietnam: Brewery swaps mass-produced brews for Belgian craft beer
|
From Karmeliet to Westmalle, Belgium's craft beers are loved across the world, but in Vietnam, a country with some of the cheapest beers in the world, it can be hard to convince people to pay the craft price.
In 2018, two Belgians named Gauthier Lagasse and Francois Schwennicke imported an entire brewery from Belgium and started Belgo, the only company brewing Belgian craft beer in Vietnam, to bring the country's rich beer culture to the Asian country, the Brussels Times reported on November 22.
The beer is brewed in-house with fresh ingredients, some of which are shipped straight from Belgium, by the company's brewmaster Gert, who uses equipment from Belgium and traditional recipes to make sure every beer meets Belgian standards.
However, its owners soon noticed that it was hard to convince consumers to take a chance on a more costly artisanal brew when most beer is so cheap and started asking themselves how they could convince the country's residents to take a chance on a more expensive product, and soon realised the answer was simple: Let them taste it.

|
A last-minute decision to ban the sale of alcohol at Qatar's World Cup stadiums will seriously limit Budweiser sales in the Gulf state, but will not derail its owner's global campaign during the tournament, industry analysts said.
Soccer world governing body FIFA's announcement of the ban on Friday, just two days before the event kicks off, leaves the world's largest brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev with at least a headache, the International Business Times reported on November 19.
Budweiser, the major World Cup sponsor it owns, had been set to exclusively sell alcoholic beer within the ticketed perimeter surrounding each of the eight stadiums three hours before and one hour after each game during the four-week event.
"Well, this is awkward," Budweiser's official Twitter account read as news of the reversal emerged. The tweet was later deleted.
Budweiser has been a World Cup sponsor since the 1986 tournament in Mexico.
The event, held every four years, typically boosts beer consumption globally, and the Belgium-based maker of brands such as Stella Artois and Corona clearly wants to profit from the millions of dollars it has paid to be the tournament's official brewer.

Qatar: Beer sale banned around World Cup stadiums in dramatic policy U-turn
|
FIFA and Qatar on Friday banned beer sales around the eight World Cup stadiums in a stunning policy U-turn just two days before the start of the tournament, Dawn reported on November 18.
Football's world governing body said the decision was taken following "discussions" with the World Cup hosts, an Islamic state which severely restricts alcohol consumption.
It gave no reason for the surprise decision but media reports said there had been an intervention by Qatar's ruling family.
The decision could affect FIFA's deal with major sponsor, beer maker AB InBev, who told AFP that "some of the planned stadium activations cannot move forward due to circumstances beyond our control".
A FIFA statement said only that alcohol would be focused on fan zones, "removing sales points of beer from Qatar's FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters."
Meanwhile fan groups said supporters should be concerned for other promises made by the hosts.
"The real issue is the last minute U-turn which speaks to a wider problem -- the total lack of communication and clarity from the organising committee towards supporters," said the Football Supporters' Association in England.

UK: Diageo makes minority investment in The Oxford Artisan Distillery
|
English whisky producer The Oxford Artisan Distillery has announced a minority investment from Diageo, FoodBev Media reported on November 21.
Founded in 2016, The Oxford Artisan Distillery “produces whisky using biodiverse populations of ‘heritage’ grains grown through an approach to grain farming known as restorative continuous grain cropping (R-CGC)”.
The investment was made through Distill Ventures, an independently operated accelerator backed by Diageo.
With the capital, The Oxford Artisan Distillery will be able to upgrade and expand its production sites, as well as develop its brand and consumer experience.
The company’s CEO, Dave Smith, said: “Over the last few years, we have seen the industry take major steps towards addressing the climate crisis, but we have a responsibility to do more in tackling sustainable farming and grain production. With Diageo and Distill Ventures’ support, we believe we can use whisky to further a revolution in the field.”
