USA: Brewing industry still facing higher costs for key inputs
|
The brewing industry is still facing higher costs for key inputs, such as packaging and carbon dioxide, and that has beer makers concerned, Yahoo Finance reported on November 20.
The cost of carbon dioxide alone rose 28% year-over-year in October, according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) data. While prices for the key beer ingredient did come down slightly month-over-month, the CO2 shortage hasn't yet abated.
"We can't make beer without CO2," Denver Beer Co. Co-Founder Patrick Crawford told Yahoo Finance in late September. "It is one of our main ingredients, right after barley, water, and hops."
Beer, food, and beverage distributors are all finding themselves in the same predicament as they compete for a scarce supply of the gas necessary to process and preserve their products.
Experts cite industrial plant shutdowns, supply chain slowdowns, and even contamination in a volcano's natural supply of carbon dioxide as reasons for the shortage. Strong demand for bubbly beverages in summer has also contributed to the tight supply.
This isn't the first time the brewers were forced to pivot this year. The industry has had to maneuver heightened material costs and aluminum shortages that took hold during the pandemic but accelerated in 2022.
That has meant higher prices

USA, FL: Fat Point Brewing expanding to new location in Sarasota
|
Fat Point Brewing is expanding north along the Suncoast and will be opening a new location in Sarasota at University Town Center (UTC). The craft brewery, originally founded in Punta Gorda, will produce and serve its flavorful and original beers from a 2,500-square-foot venue, Brewdound reported on November 19.
“Fat Point is a brand built by the support of the community, and we’re very excited to bring our brand to this new community at UTC,” said LJ Govoni, President of Fat Point Brewing Co. “The location will feature a significant number of taps for brewed-on-site exclusives and an inviting outdoor beer garden for socializing while you sip on great beers best enjoyed in the sun.”
Fat Point gets its name from Punta Gorda, which literally means “Fat Point” or the area where the pristine waters of Peace River and Gasparilla Sound meet. The new brewpub will be located along Cattlemen Rd. in the West District at UTC. The menu will offer coastal-inspired bar fare that’s sure to please everyone, and beer drinkers will be able to find everything from Fat Point’s flagship ale, Big Boca, to site exclusive small batches.

USA, MI: Third Life Brewing opens in Manistee
|
After doing a walk-through for a potential space for his new company, Jamieson Hanna signed a lease on the spot, the Manistee News Advocate reported on November 22.
Hannna opened Third Life Brewing inside the Iron Works building at 254 River St. in Manistee earlier this month. The nanobrewery is located in the space that was previously occupied by Cafe 1907.
"I just knew the space felt right and it felt like — I mean, to open a business in the most, what I consider, iconic building in Manistee, I mean that was huge," he said.
Originally from Detroit, Hanna moved to Manistee about four years ago for a position as a brewer. He's the former head brewer at North Channel Brewing Co. in Manistee, though his experience goes back much further having worked at Thumb Brewery in Caseville, Draught Horse Brewery in New Hudson, Griffin Claw Brewing Company in Birmingham, Brooks Brewing in Shelby Township and Loaded Dice Brewery in Troy.
"Third Life Brewing has been something kind of a pipe dream for me for years now," he said. "I originally started homebrewing many moons ago and every home brewer's dream is to open their own place."
Hanna said he'd never been in

USA, FL: Circle and Square Brewing gets approval by Oxford Planning Commission
|
The Oxford Planning Commission has approved the plans for Circle and Square Brewing at 100 Depot St. across from the Courtyard Marriott on Jackson Ave., The Oxford Eagle reported on November 19.
This will be the first microbrewery in the city and under the guidance of Rick Hollander.
According to the application, the small craft brewery “will operate a 7-barrel system with a total fermenting capacity of approximately 35 barrels and 8 serving tanks with approximately 8-12 taps running at all times.”
Most of the beer will be sold in the tap room. However 20 percent of what is made must be distributed according to state law.
The commission was told the location borders the University Depot, the Depot Trail, and the Ford Center, making it a great location as it is about a half mile from the closest residential home.
Commissioner Judy Riddell said she was concerned about parking as the plans included only 18 spots.
“You have only three spots designated for employees,” she said, adding the other 15 would be for the tap room guests.
Hollander said he believed three spaces would be adequate for staff as one would be for the brewmaster and another for the prep cook.

USA, WI: Pilot Project opens after buying former Milwaukee Brewing Company space
|
Pilot Project has opened its doors to the public just two months after buying the former Milwaukee Brewing Company's Brewery District facility, located at 1128 N. 9th St.
According to OnMilwaukee, the design of the building has changed both on its exterior and interior. The formerly stark white exterior is now matte black. The interior has several changes too including re-staining of surfaces and seating, new lighting fixtures, and a new steam-bent wooden sculpture that hangs behind the bar of the Pilot Project's Logan Square Taproom.
The main taproom bar will be where Pilot Project has its "everyday flagship" beers and the sidebar will have limited and rare beers, OnMilwaukee reports.
Pilot Project Milwaukee will also eventually begin offering brewery tours. The brewery is the biggest change that Pilot Project has made, which was reconfigured to make it more efficient and adaptable, according to OnMilwaukee.
Pilot Project, unlike Milwaukee Brewing, will package all of its beer in cans because it is more sustainable, safer, and cheaper.
Chicago's Gemma Foods is also already fully up and running, serving food at Pilot Project Milwaukee even though they just recently signed on, OnMilwaukee reports.

USA, CA: Cellarmaker Brewing Co. to close its original location, move to East Bay
|
The new year will bring some big changes to what’s arguably San Francisco’s best brewery. According to an Instagram post on November 17, Cellarmaker Brewing Co. will close its original Howard Street location at the end of the year and move its production to the East Bay, the Eater San Francisco reported.
The brewery has acquired Berkeley’s the Rare Barrel, which opened in 2013 as a sour-beer lover’s paradise. The post explains that while Cellarmaker will transition to brewing its beer out of the Rare Barrel space, it’ll continue to produce the Rare Barrel product line out of the facility, too.
Cellarmaker’s House of Pizza in Bernal Heights will remain open; that restaurant and taproom opened in 2019 bringing crispy-edged Detroit-style pizza to the neighborhood along with a full lineup of the brewery’s pale ales and IPAs.
An Oakland outpost is also in the works and according to the Instagram announcement, should open in February 2023. The brewery plans to debut that location before turning its attention to the Berkeley Rare Barrel taproom, which they hope to reopen later in the spring.

USA, WI: Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery closes in downtown Milwaukee
|
Rock Bottom, the brewpub that opened 25 years ago in a plum location along downtown Milwaukee's RiverWalk, has closed, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on November 18.
By Thursday, November 17 the large restaurant space at 740 N. Plankinton Ave., in River Bank Plaza, was listed for lease with Colliers commercial real estate company.
Russ Sagmoen, listed with Isaac Berg as agents, said Rock Bottom apparently has been closed since Tuesday, November 15.
The listing shows that the restaurant covers 17,200 square feet, including 6,700 square feet of private-event space on the lower level.
Sagmoen noted that the floors above the restaurant space, previously offices, are being converted to 133 apartments by developer 3L Real Estate of Chicago. 3L also has converted the former Blue Cross Blue Shield headquarters at 401 W. Michigan St. to the 207-unit Buckler Apartments and the former Wells Fargo Building at 735 W. Wisconsin Ave. into the 144-unit 735 West Apartments.
Customers might say the restaurant and brewery site's biggest draw is the expansive patio on the RiverWalk, beside the Milwaukee River.
Sagmoen, in an email, called it "an iconic location that everyone knows in Milwaukee."
Rock Bottom was among the early major restaurant and nightlife destinations to open along the RiverWalk

USA, TX: Battlehops Brewing to close its doors for good on November 20
|
Battlehops Brewing, one of Katy’s most popular beer destinations, will be closing its doors for good Nov. 20. In addition to hand crafted beers, the brewery is known for having more than 400 board games in its tasting room, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Owners Jessica and J.D. Merritt stated that they’re closing the brewery because it had become more work than they could handle, and they wanted to spend more time as a family.
“It’s a huge responsibility that we can't really handle anymore because it’s a lot of work and it takes up a lot of brain space and a lot of time,” Jessica said. “We just had to let it go because we can't justify all the work that goes into it anymore.”
The Merritts opened Battlehops in 2019. The brewery struggled during the pandemic, Jessica said, but it eventually recovered. While the pandemic didn’t directly impact the decision to close Battlehops, labor shortages following lock down contributed to the brewery’s struggles.
“The economy and COVID were things that caused struggles for all small businesses, and they were definitely a factor for us,” Jessica said. “If we’d been able to hire more help, we would have been able to have the time

South Africa: Beer sector continues to play significant role in stimulating South Africa’s economy
|
A study on the impact of the beer sector in South Africa has determined that the industry, which has recovered to pre-Covid levels, continues to play a significant role in stimulating the economy, the Money Web reported on November 23.
The 2019 report, which recorded the industry’s standard performance before the wake of the pandemic, was presented during a media briefing on Tuesday, to parallel the industry’s current influence on the country since its recovery.
The study, conducted and compiled by Oxford Economics, used three metrics – gross value added (GVA), employment and tax revenue for government – to determine the sector’s influence on the economy. It notes that most of the findings are based on the local production and sale of beer.
The study estimates that in 2019 the sector contributed R71 billion in GVA towards South Africa’s GDP and R43 billion in taxes.
“Of the R71 billion GVA contribution to GDP, R25 billion or 35% came from the direct channel, R30 billion or 42% came from the indirect channel and R16 billion or 23% came from the induced channel,” notes Oxford Economics’ director of economic impact consulting (Europe and Middle East), Pete Collings.
The direct channel is the sector’s direct employment of staff;

|
Craft beer company Bira 91 has announced that it has raised $70 million in Series D funding, in a round led by leading Japanese beer company - Kirin Holdings, Business Today reported on November 22.
The funds will be deployed to expand production capacity by commissioning new breweries and expanding its existing facilities, the company said in a statement. Bahamas: Commonwealth Brewery posts B$2.2 mln net profit growth in Q3
|
Commonwealth Brewery says that it saw its operating expenses increase by 16 percent to B$27 mln for its third quarter, which saw the BISX-listed brewer post a B$2.2 million net profit growth, the Eyewitness News reported on November 21.
Commonwealth Brewery in its third quarter financials said that it continued to see strong growth in net revenue during the quarter ending September 2022 30, with an 11 percent net revenue growth when compared to the same period of 2021.
“The company’s expectation is that growth will continue for the remainder of the year as the pandemic-related restrictions are more relaxed and the economy recovers, albeit ongoing inflation is challenging full recovery,” the statement read.
“The hotel and on-trade channels have demonstrated rapid improvement driven by increased tourism and acceleration of on-premise consumption with the return of events and nightlife occasions. Going into the fourth quarter of the year, the Company anticipates that with the approach of the festive season there will be a continued growth of revenue.”
The company noted that its operating expenses have increased to B$27 million for the quarter, a 16 percent increase which is reflective of the ongoing inflationary pressure.

Qatar: Beer sales ban at soccer World Cup stadiums not to derail AB InBev’s global campaign - analysts
|
A last-minute decision to ban the sale of alcohol at Qatar's World Cup stadiums will seriously limit Budweiser sales in the Gulf state, but will not derail its owner's global campaign during the tournament, industry analysts said.
Soccer world governing body FIFA's announcement of the ban on Friday, just two days before the event kicks off, leaves the world's largest brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev with at least a headache, the International Business Times reported on November 19.
Budweiser, the major World Cup sponsor it owns, had been set to exclusively sell alcoholic beer within the ticketed perimeter surrounding each of the eight stadiums three hours before and one hour after each game during the four-week event.
"Well, this is awkward," Budweiser's official Twitter account read as news of the reversal emerged. The tweet was later deleted.
Budweiser has been a World Cup sponsor since the 1986 tournament in Mexico.
The event, held every four years, typically boosts beer consumption globally, and the Belgium-based maker of brands such as Stella Artois and Corona clearly wants to profit from the millions of dollars it has paid to be the tournament's official brewer.

Vietnam: Brewery swaps mass-produced brews for Belgian craft beer
|
From Karmeliet to Westmalle, Belgium's craft beers are loved across the world, but in Vietnam, a country with some of the cheapest beers in the world, it can be hard to convince people to pay the craft price.
In 2018, two Belgians named Gauthier Lagasse and Francois Schwennicke imported an entire brewery from Belgium and started Belgo, the only company brewing Belgian craft beer in Vietnam, to bring the country's rich beer culture to the Asian country, the Brussels Times reported on November 22.
The beer is brewed in-house with fresh ingredients, some of which are shipped straight from Belgium, by the company's brewmaster Gert, who uses equipment from Belgium and traditional recipes to make sure every beer meets Belgian standards.
However, its owners soon noticed that it was hard to convince consumers to take a chance on a more costly artisanal brew when most beer is so cheap and started asking themselves how they could convince the country's residents to take a chance on a more expensive product, and soon realised the answer was simple: Let them taste it.
The company has now launched a "beer-currency promotion, a creative way to take on the industry's giants by encouraging consumers to try artisanal specialty

Founded in 2016, The Oxford Artisan Distillery “produces whisky using biodiverse populations of ‘heritage’ grains grown through an approach to grain farming known as restorative continuous grain cropping (R-CGC)”.
The investment was made through Distill Ventures, an independently operated accelerator backed by Diageo.
With the capital, The Oxford Artisan Distillery will be able to upgrade and expand its production sites, as well as develop its brand and consumer experience.
The company’s CEO, Dave Smith, said: “Over the last few years, we have seen the industry take major steps towards addressing the climate crisis, but we have a responsibility to do more in tackling sustainable farming and grain production. With Diageo and Distill Ventures’ support, we believe we can use whisky to further a revolution in the field.”
Frank Lampen, founder and CEO of Distill Ventures, added: “Grain is becoming an important part of how whisky producers are continuing to innovate and develop new styles and flavours, and the heritage grains used by Oxford Artisan Distillery together with their groundbreaking approach to farming in a sustainable way make this one of the most exciting distilleries in

A FIFA statement said only that alcohol would be focused on fan zones, "removing sales points of beer from Qatar's FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters."
Meanwhile fan groups said supporters should be concerned for other promises made by the hosts.
"The real issue is the last minute U-turn which speaks to a wider problem -- the total lack of communication and clarity from the organising committee towards supporters," said the Football Supporters' Association in England.
"If they can change their minds on this at a moment's notice, with no explanation, supporters will have understandable concerns about
