Ireland: Heineken to provide transition discount to hospitality businesses for three months
|
Heineken Ireland will provide hospitality business operators with a transition discount for a three-month period following the company’s recent decision to increase the on-trade price of kegs from December 1, the Irish Examiner reported on November 24.
Heineken Ireland has advised its customers that for the next three-month period the company will support them with a 3.5% discount on all keg deliveries. This will apply to all Heineken Ireland brands including Murphy’s Stout and Orchard Thieves cider.
“As stated previously, Heineken Ireland is facing unprecedented pressures across all input costs and has no choice but to pass on some of these cost increases, through an increase in wholesale keg prices,” said the brewer.
“The challenges created by these cost pressures have not changed and therefore the 9% price increase announced previously takes effect on 1st December 2022,” it added.
This temporary support for publicans, hoteliers and restaurant comes as the brewer faced backlash in relation to the timing of the price increase as many business owners are struggling with other costs such as surging energy bills.
Heineken Ireland’s pandemic-related support for the Irish hospitality sector totalled €19 mln as the Cork-based brewer took back hundreds of thousands of kegs of its lager, cider, and stout

Qatar: AB InBev seeking $47.4 million from FIFA after World Cup stadium beer ban
|
Last week’s decision by Qatar officials to ban alcohol sales at stadiums just two days before the first 2022 FIFA World Cup match could impact the relationship of FIFA and beer sponsor Anheuser-Busch InBev (A-B) through 2026. As a ripple effect, AB InBev is seeking a $47.4 million deduction in its $112 million sponsorship deal for the 2026 World Cup, Front Office Sports reported.
The more than decade-long planning of this year’s global soccer tournament has been fraught with multiple changes to the host country’s alcohol policy. While Qatar does not ban alcoholic beverages, it does severely limit where they can be purchased, strictly regulating the sale to hotel bars and other limited locations. The final update was released last Friday, November 18 with Qatar limiting the sale of alcoholic beverages to “the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues” outside of the eight stadiums perimeters, FIFA said in a statement.
Anheuser-Busch InBev paid a reported $74 million to be the official beer sponsor of the 2022 World Cup and showcase its flagship Budweiser, but sadly after last week’s decision, the company can only sell its non-alcoholic brand Budweiser Zero to fans at matches.
The 2026 World Cup will kick off

France: Barley and wheat crop about a week ahead of usual development
|
French soft wheat and winter barley crops are still about a week ahead of their usual rate of development following a mild autumn, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on November 25.
Soft wheat in France, the European Union's biggest grain producer, had emerged from the ground on about 93% of the expected crop area by Nov. 21, with the median date of emergence six days earlier than the average of the past five years, FranceAgriMer said in a weekly cereal report.
Soft wheat crops on 38% of the area had also reached the subsequent tillering stage, when shoots start to form from the stem, compared with just 7% a year ago, the office said.
For winter barley, crops had emerged on 97% of the area and development pace was seven days ahead of the five-year average.
Crops had started tillering on 59% of the area versus 21% a year ago.
Early development of cereals crop has been boosted by an exceptionally warm October and regular rain that has eased the effects of summer drought.
The fast initial growth has raised concern about crops being vulnerable to frost, although a progressive cooling in temperatures expected in the week ahead may slow development and improve plants' hardiness.

Canada: AC Metcalfe off Canada’s recommended malting barley varieties list
|
Canada’s annual recommended list of malting barley varieties is out, and one prominent name is off the list: AC Metcalfe, Real Agriculture reported on November 24.
Topping the list this year is AAC Connect, distributed by CANTERRA Seeds, and CDC Fraser, from SeCan. List veteran CDC Copeland and AAC Synergy round out the list of recommended varieties.
The Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) compiles this list each year to indicate to producers the varieties that are in demand in the marketplace and those that have the greatest potential for contracting, selection, and movement.
CMBTC says that newer varieties with improved agronomics and disease resistance are helping to keep malting barley competitive with other crops in Canada, and that new varieties tend to be shorter and have significantly improved straw strength to decrease lodging risk, while still being easy to thresh and combine.

Ukraine: Grain exports got off to slower start after extension deal with Russia
|
Ukraine's grain exports have gotten off to a slower start after a U.N.-brokered deal was extended last week to help ease global hunger, and one Ukrainian envoy put part of the blame on Russia's reluctance to speed up ship inspections, Reuters reported on November 24.
Since the agreement was extended beyond Nov. 19, no more than five ships a day have departed Ukraine, U.N. data show, down from previous weeks and months when up to 10 departed.
A U.N. spokesperson, Ismini Palla, said vessel flows were affected by past uncertainty over extending the deal, poor Istanbul weather conditions for inspections, and a rotation of new staff and inspectors at a Joint Coordination Centre (JCC).
The deal, between Moscow and Kyiv that was also brokered by Ankara, unblocked exports that were stalled in Ukraine's Black Sea ports after Russia's invasion.
It began in July and was extended last week through March, easing global food prices.
So far nearly 12 million tonnes of grain and foodstuffs have been exported aboard 491 outbound voyages. But movements have slowed this month, partly due to uncertainty among shippers and insurers about whether Russia would agree to extend the agreement.
A total of 27 ships set sail from Ukraine in the seven
