USA: Suntory Holdings to expand high-end whiskey and other premium offerings
|
Japanese drinks maker Suntory Holdings will expand its high-end whiskey and other premium offerings as it seeks to widen the profit margin in the key U.S. market, President Takeshi Niinami tells Nikkei.
Niinami spoke with Nikkei during a recent visit to New York for the opening of subsidiary Beam Suntory's new headquarters there, following a relocation from Chicago amid the company's expansion push.
The president sees the focus on premium offerings as a way for the company to weather rising production costs in the country.
"We'll combine Japanese and U.S. techniques to create high-quality products, not mass-produced ones," he said.
Suntory Holdings' alcoholic beverages segment logged a 16% operating profit margin last year, excluding taxes on alcoholic beverages. Its operations in the Americas brought revenue of 362.7 billion yen ($2.61 billion at current rates).
The holding company is boosting product development at Beam Suntory, looking to shift toward the higher end of the market for drinks like whiskey. It aims to increase the subsidiary's profit margin to 25% from about 22% now, based on earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization.
Beyond whiskey and other spirits, Beam Suntory wants to roll out new high-margin offerings such as ready-to-drink beverages.

USA, MN: Chaotic Good Brewing reports strong few weeks
|
It’s been about three weeks since Chaotic Good Brewing opened in Kasson.
The owner said they have had a strong first few weeks, KAAL TV reported on November 30.
Their brewery seats 45 people and on weekends, there’s often standing room only.
Chaotic Good is the only brewery in the area, and the owner says his goal is to bring people into the community.
“People just sitting around the table, enjoying each other’s company and having a good time. To me that’s what sets a brewery’s taproom apart from other venues,” Owner Scott Stroh said.
Stroh says he felt there wasn’t a space for families to get together and play games locally, which is why he thinks being family-friendly is important.

USA, PA: Voodoo Brewing’s new brewpub coming to Scranton on December 3
|
Back in late September, Voodoo Brewing announced a new brewpub coming to Scranton at 820 South Washington Venue. Now the location is ready for its grand opening on Saturday, December 3rd, the Breweries in PA reported.
This marks the tenth Voodo location either opening or planned in Pennsylvania. As reported earlier this year, the brewery opened locations in Houston and Pittsburgh, PA just in 2022 alone. Making them one of the top 5 breweries in Pennsylvania with the most locations in the state.
Voodoo will have a large food menu here, and serve many items such as smash burgers, beer mussels, salads, and classics like giant pretzels. Their menu will stay fresh with regular rotating features and chef specials.

USA, TX: Bad Astronaut Brewing to open in Houston in mid-December
|
The latest brewery to open in Houston amid a flurry of activity is weeks away from welcoming beer lovers through its doors. Bad Astronaut Brewing will open in mid-December in Near Northside, the Chron reported on November 28.
Co-founders Chris Fall and Rocky Keener were both some of the earliest employees at Karbach Brewing, a pioneering brewery in Houston that sold to beer giant Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2016. After 11 and 9 years at the company, respectively, they are pursuing a longtime dream of theirs to open their own brewery, with partner Josh Teekell.
Bad Astronaut has been in the works for about two years, and the team began construction this past July. It's located in a massive 36,000-square-foot warehouse originally built in 1932. From the 1970s until the mid-2000s, it was home to the Texas Screw Factory, manufacturing screws for oil wells and other such hardware. The company moved and used the space for storage until Bad Astronaut signed a 10-year lease in 2022.

USA, PA: Bonafide Beer Company now open in Pittsburgh’s Strip District
|
Bonafide Beer Company, is now open at 155 21st Street in Pittsburgh’s Strip District, Breweries in PA reported on November 27.
The 1,600 sq/ft building was previously the Chicken Latino restaurant, and Bonafide Beer will operate there on a “small batch” business model, utilizing a 2BBL brewhouse.
When asked what style of beers he wanted to make at this space, co-owner Travis Tuttle said “lots of easy-drinking lagers, sessionable IPAs, and some international styles such as dry Irish stouts. Basically, beers that make you want to buy a case of them. We won’t be swearing off certain beer styles, but we will focus on those easy-drinking ones.” Travis went on to say, “We will have two staple or core brands, a lager, and an IPA, and these will be brewed on a larger scale and sent out for distribution.”
The taproom will be able to fit about 50 people total, with bar seating for 10. There are 13 taps, including 3 side pours as well. Bonafide won’t have food. Instead, they’re encouraging beer fans to order from the many local restaurants nearby.

USA, VA: The Rocket Frog Brewing Company to close its doors for good next month
|
The Rocket Frog Brewing Company in Sterling has announced that it will close its doors for good next month, The Burn reported on November 28.
“We’ve had an epic ride and could not have done it without the support of our fans, staff and family,” the brewery’s team posted to social media today.
“Through Rocket Frog, we have gained an extended family, which makes closing that much more difficult. We are thankful that we had a great staff and beer to share with all of you,” the message continued.
Rocket Frog, located on Glenn Drive, is planning on having a final bash on December 10 before they close the following day.
The brewery opened back in 2018 with one of the coolest names and logos around. The brewery got its name from a frog that got caught on camera flying through the air during a NASA rocket launch.
The Rocket Frog team says they will keep to their regular schedule until they close and they hope to see all their regulars and friends for that final goodbye on December 10.

Australia: Beer prices could spike this Christmas as production costs skyrocket
|
Australia’s beer drinkers could be paying up to A$10 per case extra this Christmas, as production costs skyrocket, news.com.au reported on November 28.
Queensland University of Technology marketing professor Gary Mortimer said three compounding factors were causing the spike in beer prices.
“One is the impact to barley crops across the eastern seaboard inundated by flooding and high rainfall,” he told NCA NewsWire.
“That means there’s less raw materials to move into production.
“The second reason is the increased production costs, including higher prices for water, electricity and fuel for logistics.
“And finally the alcohol excess applied every six months, which is currently 3.8 per cent.
“It’s a triple whammy.”
Professor Mortimer said beer drinkers would paying A$5 to A$10 extra per case because of the increased costs.
He suggested those still wanting to buy beer for Christmas should consider mid-strength or even alcohol-free options because the alcohol excess is applied differently and may reduce costs slightly.
And it’s not just beer facing price hikes, with the cost of fresh fruit and vegetables also being impacted by recent weather conditions and flooding.

Ireland & Germany: Rye River Brewing Company receives “multi-million euro” investment from German brewer Warsteiner
|
Rye River Brewing Company, a Co Kildare-based independent retail craft brewery, has received a “multi-million euro” investment from family-owned German brewer Warsteiner, Independent.ie reported on November 27.
The investment will see the ninth-generation family-owned German brewery acquire a minority stake in Rye River. It will also provide capital and operational support, focusing on accelerating the Celbridge brewery’s growth in export markets through access to Warsteiner’s well-established distribution channels and international networks.
Tom Cronin, founder and managing director of Rye River, welcomed the investment and new partnership with the German brewer, adding that sustained investment in production, quality, capacity and operations had already been crucial for the company.
“We have already enjoyed success in international markets but remain hugely ambitious to grow our export markets further,” he said. “The investment from Warsteiner will not only allow us to bring forward a number of capital projects but also gives us access to significant distribution channels and networks which will accelerate export growth.

UK: Guinness gets green light for Covent Garden brewery despite complaints from local residents
|
Guinness has been given the green light for its £73 mln Covent Garden brewery despite complaints that it will fill the streets with vomiting drunks, MyLondon reported on November 25.
Guinness owner Diageo has been given a later alcohol licence by Westminster City Council to let people stay and drink in the 150-person courtyard of the Old Brewer's Yard until 10.30pm or 11pm on weekends.
The council previously gave Guinness licences to set up a brewery, a three-storey restaurant, and a shop. An old nightclub, with space for 350 people, beneath Old Brewer's Yard is also set to become an event space run by Guinness but the drink's giant says it will be mainly for corporate events to help pay the bills.
But Covent Garden residents are scared the streets could be full of drunken "louts being sick" and fear that there will be as much noise as a nightclub. In total, 500 drinkers could be leaving the site at once if an event is on at the underground venue.

UK: Marston’s reports encouraging trade, delays publication of final results
|
Pub chain Marston’s said on November 28 that trading since the year-end has been encouraging, as it announced a delay to the publication of its final results, ShareCast reported.
Results for the year to 2 October 2022 - which had been scheduled for release on Tuesday, November 29 - have been pushed back due to a short delay in the completion of audit procedures at joint venture Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company.
"This is at the request of Carlsberg's auditors who are finalising their audit documentation," it said, adding that there is no disagreement between Carlsberg's auditors and CMBC management and that it should be able publish its results within the next week.
Marston’s also gave a brief update on trading, which it said had been "encouraging" since the year end. Like-for-like sales in its managed and franchised pubs are up 6.8% on the same period a year ago and 5% higher than in 2019.
In addition, the group said October earnings were in line with its expectations, while bookings for Christmas Day and Christmas Fayre are "encouraging and are building in momentum".

UK: Value of rare Scotch whiskies up more than a fifth this year
|
The value of rare Scotch whiskies has climbed by more than a fifth this year as younger investors sought tangible assets amid volatile financial markets, the Financial Times reported.
Volumes have jumped by almost a quarter, the FT said, citing a report by Scottish investment bank Noble & Co. The increase in auction sales was mainly driven by bottles priced between £100 and £1,000, with that category seeing values rising 40% and volumes 30% in the first three quarters.
The report was conducted with data science company Brainnwave and tracked more than half a million auction transactions over the past decade. Choppy markets have bolstered demand for rare whiskies as alternative investments, the FT cited Noble as saying. Sales at investment firm Elite Wine & Whisky highlight that trend.
Elite saw demand spike after the UK’s “mini-budget” in September roiled markets, and its turnover has risen 70% so far this year to £17 million, the newspaper reported.
Scotch made up three-quarters of Scottish food and drink exports last year and more than a fifth of all UK food and drink shipments, the FT said, citing the Scotch Whisky Association.

The Czech Republic: Czech pubs turning to technology to reduce energy costs on beer
|
Czech pubs are turning to technology to reduce the cost of putting glasses of beer on the bar for thirsty locals, Reuters reported on November 25.
With Czechs among the biggest beer drinkers in the world, brewer Plzensky Prazdroj plans to install sensors which will collect data on beer flow, as well as tube and tap temperatures.
This will be sent to a cloud database and analysed to make recommendations on improving a pub's systems, said Jakub Zaoral who is leading the Asahi-owned brewery's Smart Taproom project.
Plzensky Prazdroj hopes that by making adjustments its pubs will save up to 30% of the energy needed for cooling and tapping their beer, a goal made more pressing by rising energy costs.
"We will 'x-ray' and observe 45 pubs using 1,200 sensors which gives us the exact numbers, how our tapping system consumes electric energy and we will relate this with the beer flow and its consumption in the pub," said Zaoral.
The system uses Internet of Drinks solutions by start-up firm Smart Technology, which uses ultrasound metering and provides information on the amount of beer tapped, sanitation intervals and the state of the cooling system.

Ukraine: Grain exports will not reach 3 mln tonnes in November - Ukraine's Infrastructure Minister
|
Exports of Ukraine's grain will not reach 3 million tonnes in November as Russia tries to limit ship inspections at ports, Ukraine's Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov said late on November 26.
In October, some 4.2 million tonnes of grain left Ukrainian ports, Kubrakov said on his Facebook page.
"It was the custom to conduct 40 inspections a day, now, due to Russia's position, there are five times fewer checks," he said.
A deal aimed at easing global food shortages by helping Ukraine export its agricultural products and protecting the transit corridor from three Black Sea ports that was originally reached in July was extended for four months in mid-November.
Ukraine and Russia are major global grain exporters. They agreed that teams would check the vessels to ensure no barred people or goods were arriving at or departing from Ukrainian ports.
But Ukraine's exports have gotten off to a slower start with Kyiv putting the blame on Russia's reluctance to speed up ship inspections.
Kubrakov said 77 ships were queuing to pass the inspection in Turkey while the three Black Sea ports use up to only 50% of their capacity.

UK: Spring malting barley Firefoxx receives full approval for malt distilling use

Firefoxx, a high-yielding spring malting barley with early maturity, bred by Elsoms-Ackermann Barley, has received full approval for malt distilling use by the Malting Barley Committee (MBC) confirms Paul Taylor, Head of Agriculture at Elsoms Seeds, The Scottish Farmer reported on November 25.
“This is fantastic news for both growers and the distilling market and being a Chanson/Acorn cross and not related to either Concerto or Laureate, Firefoxx offers growers a very different genetic background that brings some much-needed diversity back into the market,” commented Mr Taylor.
“For malt distillers, its low screening levels and key trait of being less prone to skinning than its competitors are another big plus.”

Uruguay: Unions halt import of Argentine-brewed beer into Uruguay

Unions have saved Uruguayan brewery workers from calamity after their actions prevailed in stopping Fábricas Nacionales de Cerveza (FNC) from importing domestic brands from Argentina, where production costs around half as much due to the currency exchange scenario, MercoPress reported on November 26.
The company would import the brands Pilsen and Norteña due to the increase in local costs but reversed its decision in the light of complaints from Uruguayan workers. FNC produces most of the big beers in the Uruguayan market, such as Pilsen, Norteña, Patricia, Zillertal. and Stella Artois. It also distributes brands such as Corona, Budweiser, and Patagonia.
The Federation of Beverage Workers and Employees and FNC reached an agreement this week after the union refused to distribute beers imported from Argentina. Production in Uruguay costs up to two and a half times more than in Argentina's Quilmes brewery.
The company had announced its decision regarding Pilsen and Norteña as the difference in production costs in Uruguay had been steadily increasing, which resulted in a strong increase in the presence of low-priced imported beers in the Uruguayan market, which sold for 30% less than beers made in Uruguay.

Kenya: Kenya Breweries to double solar utilisation in the next four years

Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) plans to double its solar utilisation to 15 per cent in the next four years as it accelerates its shift to renewable energy, the Business Daily reported on November 24.
The company said it is applying good energy management practices across supply operations and installing solar panels as part of its journey towards cutting greenhouse gas emissions as close to zero as possible.
“To accelerate our journey to net zero carbon we intend to increase solar energy utilization from 7 per cent to 15 per cent by 2026,” said the brewer in the East African Breweries Limited in the 2022 Sustainability Report.
As part of this commitment, the KBL will install solar panels at East African Maltings Limited (EAML) and Tusker sites as an alternative to electricity.
With the intensifying effects of climate change such as floods, heat waves, drought and forest fires, it’s not business as usual as priority shifts towards sustainable and environmentally-responsible projects and operations.
Going green is part of the brewer’s active role towards sustainable development goals (SDGs) and climate change advocacy.
