Canada, AB: Large shipments of US corn to keep Canadian barley prices under pressure
|
Large shipments of corn from the U.S., slated for delivery to Alberta’s feedlot alley, should keep domestic barley prices under pressure going forward, according to an analyst, the Canadian Cattlemen reported on December 1.
“The barley price here will gradually decline,” said Errol Anderson of Pro Market Communications in Calgary, adding that up to 30 unit trains of U.S. corn were booked already.
A 100-car unit train typically amounts to about 8,000 to 10,000 tonnes of grain.
“Once these cattle go onto corn, they won’t go back to barley — they’re done for the year,” said Anderson. He noted feeders like using corn, as it’s cheaper than barley.
In addition, “the export price is still at quite a discount to the domestic… so it’s not like the export market will suddenly compete with the domestic market.”
With feedlots booking corn, “the market has already planned its course for the rest of the marketing year,” Anderson said.
Feed barley in Alberta is currently trading at anywhere from C$7.33 per bushel to as high as C$9.91 per bushel, delivered to the elevator, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire data.

USA, VA: Three Notch’d Brewing Company awaiting permit to start construction at former Wild Wolf Brewing building
|
Three Notch’d Brewing Company is currently awaiting a special use permit to begin construction at the former Wild Wolf Brewing building in Nellysford, NBC29.com reported on December, 1.
After the renovation, Three Notch’d is looking to add a distillery to the new space to expand its offerings.
“That’s going to be the primary focus of the production down there, in addition to launching a non-alcoholic beer brand as well. It affords us some additional capacity, because we are running out of that here in Charlottesville,” Three Notch’d Brewing Company President Scott Roth said.
Three Notch’d hopes that if everything goes as planned, the new distillery will be up and running by the spring of 2023.

USA, NY: Marlowe Artisanal Ales to focus on ‘simpler beers’
|
Craft beer is everywhere now. According to recent numbers, New York currently has the third most amount of breweries in the US with 423 total breweries, 101.5 WPDH reported on December 1.
When some think of craft beer, they may associate it with some of the more over-the-top styles and flavors. However, a new brewery hopes to shift the focus away from the so-called quadruple IPAs, or barrel-aged barley wines with a 14% alcohol content.
The founder and owner of this new business recently told the press that his vision was for a place "to gather and hang out." He says his focus is aimed more towards "simpler beer(s)", with big flavors, but "without the hefty alcohol percentage."
Zac Ross recently told LoHud that his goal was to create a brewery that was "more like a pub". For those of you reminiscing about their favorite old local bars from years back, this could be your new stop. LoHud reports that Marlowe Artisanal Ales has opened in Nyack in the same spot where Two Villains once ran on Main Street.

USA, PA: Weyerbacher Brewing Co. to reopen under new ownership
|
Weyerbacher Brewing Co.’s second bankruptcy case in three years is resolved, and the Easton business is preparing to reopen under new ownership, lehyghvalleylive.com reported on November 30.
Savant Beverages LLC led by CEO Ed Lozano closed on the purchase Oct. 3, he told lehighvalleylive.com. That’s the same day an order was entered dismissing the bankruptcy case opened June 27 in federal court, court records show. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Lozano is a former president and CEO of Pittsburgh Brewing Co.
“He turned that brewery around,” Easton Mayor Sal Panto Jr. said of the western Pennsylvania maker of Iron City and other beers. “So we’re looking for exciting things there to get them back up and running full-speed again.”
Now looking to revive an established brewery on the other side of the state, Lozano is also a former executive with Miller Brewing Co. and PepsiCo. He opened the J’s Steaks and Subs in 2017 at the former Uncle Wesley’s in West Ward Easton, and his community involvement includes having served on the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority Board of Governors. He and his wife, Victoria, who is executive vice president and general manager of Crayola LLC attractions and retail, live in Palmer Township.

Canada, SK: Warehouse Brewing announces closure
|
Warehouse Brewing announced via an Instagram post that Friday, December 2 would be the final day its doors are open, 620 CKRM reported.
“After 1.5 years of a massive building of the old Weston Bread Factory, Warehouse is officially closing their doors,” they said in the post. “We have tried everything to keep the doors open, but sadly cannot financially continue to do so.”
The brewery thanked those who supported it and encouraged people to support other local craft breweries in the Queen City.
“It is too late for us, but please help other craft breweries thrive and succeed,” they said. “It’s been a ride, to say the least, and we are sad it’s over. Thank you and farewell, Regina, from all of us at the Warehouse Brewing Company.”
The Regina-based brewing company opened just five days before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

After four years in business in the Market District east of downtown Des Moines, a brewery plans to close this weekend. Say so long to 1717 Brewery Co. after the close of business on Sunday, December 4.
“We wanted to take a moment and thank you all for being with us on this fantastic journey, which is sadly at an end. We are closing the taproom at 1717 this Sunday at close of business,” the business wrote on Facebook.
“We loved meeting and serving you all, a lot of you have become family to us and we will miss you greatly. We consider it an honor of a lifetime that you would include us in your daily life, celebrations and heartaches alike. We loved being there for all of it and wouldn't trade this experience for anything.”
Matt, Phil and Jerry Glenn opened 1717 Brewing Co. at 322 E. Court Ave. in 2018 after working at the now-defunct Number 7 Brewing Co. in Ankeny. The taproom paid homage to the Glenns’ childhood home in the River Bend neighborhood, with a walk-in cooler decorated like a scaled down version of the home that welcomed so many.

The Netherlands: Heineken to increase beer and cider prices by an average of 10.7%
|
Heineken will increase its beer and cider prices by an average of 10.7 percent on January 1. The beer giant informed catering entrepreneurs in the Netherlands about it on Tuesday, November 29. That comes on top of the 5.8 price increase it implemented in August, De Gelderlander reports.
Catering entrepreneurs are despondent. “We are in a vicious cycle, restaurant owner Frans van Breemen of Facet in Rotterdam said to the newspaper. Restaurants are already facing higher energy costs, rent increases, staff shortages, and coronavirus debts waiting to be paid off. It’s difficult to see a way out, he said.
Hospitality association KHN has not yet released an official response, but chairman Rober Willemsen told the newspaper that they are “not amused.”
Heineken also has higher energy bills and more expensive raw materials to deal with, a spokesperson stressed. The brewer is only passing on some of its increased costs. “We absorb part of the costs ourselves. We want to deal with it in a responsible manner, but we cannot avoid passing this on. It is significant, but the price increases are huge,” they said. “We live in unusual times.

South Korea: Chinese beer successfully reclaims top position among imports in South Korea
|
Among imported beers, Chinese brands were imported the most to South Korea according to data released on November 29 - successfully reclaiming the top position after weathering dwindling profitability for years due to a nationwide reluctance to use Chinese products during the pandemic, The Korea Herald reported.
According to data from the Korea Customs Service, $31.16 million of Chinese beer was imported into the country in October - the highest total for imported beer from one country for the month.
The data shows a drastic recovery from 2020, when the pandemic hit the nation the hardest and left many here reluctant to purchase Chinese products.
Chinese beer imports in February 2020 had amounted to $1.3 million, down 32.7 percent from the same period the year before, according to data from the Korea Trade Statistics Promotion.
The recovery in beer imported from China follows the coronavirus pandemic reaching its endemic phase and the consequently eased anxiety toward Chinese products.

Cambodia: ThaiBev incorporates new wholly-owned subsidiary in Cambodia
|
The subsidiary of SGX-listed Thai Beverage Public Company Limited, Asia Breweries Limited, incorporated a new wholly-owned subsidiary, BeerCo, in Cambodia, the Singapore Business reported on November 29.
In a bourse filing, ThaiBev said BeerCo has a registered share capital of $137,713 (US$100,000), with 100,000 shares.
"It is incorporated as a holding company for the beer business in Cambodia," said ThaiBev.
The investment will be funded through internally generated funds and will not have any impact on the earnings per share and net tangible assets of ThaiBev for this fiscal year.
ThaiBev was recently the top stock on the index and its strengthened portfolio is seen to boost its recovery until next year.

UK: New project seeks to explore producing of barley with 50% lower emissions
|
A new on-farm project will explore how barley can be grown in a more sustainable way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining crop performance, FarmingUK reported on November 29.
The ambition of the regenerative farming trial is to produce barley with 50% lower GHG emissions within five years.
Malted barley contributes 39% and 41% to the carbon footprint of beer and whisky respectively.
In the first year, 16 farmers are dedicating around 400 acres specifically to the trial, producing over 1,000 tonnes of barley from spring and winter varieties.
The trial is an effort between Japanese multinational brewing group the Suntory Group, malt supplier Muntons, supply chain consultancy Future Food Solutions and Norfolk-based barley farmers, Dewing Grain.
The project will start by baselining all crop-related emissions, which will inform an innovative nature-based programme of interventions that seek to reduce emissions while maintaining grain quality.
The success of this trial could pave the way for reducing the overall value chain of production by 20% in a single leap.

Thailand: ThaiBev unveils new premium beer to strengthen its portfolio
|
Thai Beverage (ThaiBev), the Singapore-listed food and beverage company, has unveiled its new premium beer to strengthen its beer portfolio, the Bangkok Post reported on November 29.
According to Lester Tan, the company's senior vice-president and chief of its beer business in Thailand, Chang Unpasteurized, Thailand's first-ever unpasteurised beer, was launched to the market a few days ago at several pubs, bars, restaurants and hotels.
The company aims to cover over 100 locations in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai over the next few years.
"Chang Unpasteurized will be available first in both provinces because they are Beer Chang's 'homeland' so we want to satisfy our loyal customers with our new innovative beer. Chang Unpasteurized is a beer never been seen in Thailand before," Mr Tan said.
"We hope this new premium beer will help excite the beer market in the upcoming peak sales season of beer," he added.
The product was produced at its factory in Kamphaeng Phet province.
The new product features three distinct attributes including brewing that bypasses heat treatment after the bottling process to ensure that consumers can sense and experience the unique aroma and freshness of its origins.

Malawi: Castel Malawi struggling with forex shortage issues

Castel Malawi has disclosed that it has unsettled outstanding bills totalling over USD18 mln which equals over MWK18 bln due to unavailability of forex and the situation, if continues, will see the production of its flagship brand, the Carlsberg Green being suspended for the unforeseeable future, the Nyasa Times reported on November 29.
Already, the company has stopped production of its spirits line, namely Malawi Gin, Premier Brandy, and Malawi Vodka, due to acute shortage of raw materials which can only be accessed through forex.
Speaking in Lilongwe last week when he was introduced to government officials including members of parliament, newly appointed Managing Director for Castel Malawi Thomas Reynaud said acute shortage of forex has seriously impacted the operations of the company.
“Spirits production has been suspended due to acute shortage of returnable bottles since we do not have a local supplier and Carlsberg Green is at the verge of suspension as well due to unavailability of materials. Foreign suppliers have stopped shipping key materials due to old overdue bills.”

UK: AHDB posts Recommended Lists for cereals and oilseeds
|
AHDB’s Recommended Lists for cereals and oilseeds (RL) 2023/24 features new varieties that deliver large yield increases, especially in barley and oilseed rape, FarmingUK.com reported on November 28.
The edition sees a relatively small number of varieties added, including the first new winter malting barley and winter oat varieties for several years.
The latest update was released alongside details of a major review of the RL, which aims to help the variety trialling project keep pace with the industry’s evolving requirements.
RL 2023-2024, launched on Monday (28 November), includes several new barley varieties that bring strength to yield and disease resistance.
The winter barley list includes the first malting variety added since 2018. Buccaneer, from Saaten Union, offers a big yield increase over the established two-row malting varieties, Craft and Electrum, alongside good disease resistance.
Two new two-row and one new six-row hybrid varieties add strength to winter barley feed yields (compared with current favourites). The two rows are Bolivia, from Agrii (bred by Nordic Seed), and LG Caravelle, from Limagrain.

Oriental Brewery's flagship beer brand Cass secured the top market share in the domestic beer market in October and seeks to continue its momentum via various promotions related to the World Cup, South Korea's largest beer maker said on November 30.
According to market research firm Nielsen Korea, Cass logged the largest market share in the off-trade market for the beer industry in October.
Off-trade market refers to retail outlets such as hypermarkets, supermarkets, convenience stores and kiosks.
As the official sponsor brand of the 2022 FIFA Qatar World Cup, the company will harness the event to create sales momentum and attract more consumers.
According to the company, OB is carrying out various World Cup-related events including releasing "Number Cass Package" and launching "Cass Play Pub" as part of campaigns for the world's biggest soccer tournament.
