A new brewery is on tap for the former 12welve Eyes Brewing space in St. Paul's Lowertown neighborhood, The Business Journals reported on December 5.
Owner and head brewer Josh Secaur hopes to launch Gambit Brewing Co. in mid-January on the lower level of the historic Pioneer Endicott building, located at 141 Fourth St. E. in St. Paul, whose the turnkey taproom and brewery spaces have sat vacant since 12welve Eyes closed in June 2019.
Gambit is already brewing beer and plans to offer a wide variety, then dial in the tap list once it has a better sense of what guests want. Annual production will be quite small, at least to start – Secaur estimates around 700 barrels in the first year – with some off-premise sales from the taproom and limited distribution.
Secaur got his start as a home brewer more than 20 years ago and helmed Bobtown Brewery in Roberts, Wis., as its head brewer for about three years. Bobtown's owner, Mike Christianson, lives in Minneapolis and will serve as general manager of Gambit.
Another bar-centric business, Alley Cat Cocktail Lounge, planned to open within the Pioneer Endicott building, but Secaur said it's not moving forward due to a licensing issue.

North America: Corn trade war between Mexico and the US could affect badly Canadian barley growers
|
A brewing corn trade war between Mexico and the United States could have dire consequences for Canadian barley growers, an analyst was quoted as saying by the Western Producer on December 2.
Mexican president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador issued a presidential decree on Dec. 31, 2020, that would ban the import of genetically modified corn starting in 2024 and phase out the use of glyphosate.
On Nov. 28, 2022, the United States threatened legal action against Mexico if it proceeds with that plan.
“The president’s phase-out decree has the potential to substantially disrupt trade, harm farmers on both sides of the border and significantly increase costs for Mexican farmers,” U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said in a tweet after meeting with Lopez Obrador.
“We must find a way forward soon, and I emphasized in no uncertain terms that, absent acceptable resolution of this issue, the U.S. government would be forced to consider all options, including taking formal steps to enforce our legal rights under the USMCA.”
Following the meeting, Lopez Obrador indicated there could be a compromise, with Mexico allowing imports of yellow corn, used for livestock feed, while blocking white corn, imported for human consumption.

USA, OH: 58 West opens as a combination craft brewery, winery, distillery and restaurant in the Hocking Hills
|
Just a short day (or weekend) trip away, a new combination craft brewery, winery, distillery and restaurant has opened in the Hocking Hills, 614Now reported on December 6.
58 West will hold its official ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony on Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. Dinner service will follow, beginning at 4 p.m.
The new concept is located at 58 W. 2nd St., in the historic Downtown of Logan, Ohio. Logan is just over 40 miles from Downtown Columbus.
The Hocking Hills spot has partnered with Hocking Hills Brewing Company, Hocking Hills Winery and Motherwell Distillery to provide beer, wine and spirits for guests, many of which are made on-site.
The new Logan, Ohio concept also plans to serve a variety of “casual, elevated” dishes, although an a menu has not yet been released.

Malt and spirit-based beverages started rolling out from the Molson Coors brewery in Chilliwack for the first time this week, The Progress reported on December 6.
While the company’s 236-year history is deeply rooted in beer, the rebranded Molson Coors Beverage Company is gaining traction with a raft of new products that go behind the beer aisle.
In Chilliwack, operational upgrades from early 2022 prepared them for these changes that took place at the Fraser Valley Brewery, and they dovetail with Molson Coors’ environmentally responsible brewing process.
“Investing in our brewing capabilities is a top priority for Molson Coors,” said David Hamel, Molson Coors’ general manager of operations for Western Canada. “This upgrade supports many of our commitments as a company – from modernizing our operations in Chilliwack, to unlocking additional brewing capacity for our above-premium brands, to doing so responsibly by ensuring our facilities are pillars of sustainable brewing for years to come.”
Two of the biggest Molson Coors facilities in Canada, in Chilliwack and Toronto, saw production get underway Monday for brands like Vizzy Hard Seltzer and CoorsSeltzer destined for the Western market, and Central Canada.

USA, OH: Midnight Owl Brewing Company planning summer opening in Shaker Heights
|
Midnight Owl Brewing Company is planning a summer 2023 opening in Shaker Heights, the Cleveland Jewish News reported on December 2.
Housed in a portion of the former Lucy’s Sweet Surrender at 20314 Chagrin Blvd., the brewery will be in the adjacent space next to Mendel’s Kansas City BBQ, a kosher eatery led by Mendel Segal.
The brewery will be owned by Joel Warger, formerly of Cleveland’s Goldhorn Brewery, and his wife, Rosemary Mudry. The Shaker Heights zoning board heard the brewery’s plans on Nov. 1. Warger was also a longtime brewer at Great Lakes Brewing Co. before moving to Goldhorn, which opened in 2016.
“Midnight Owl Brewing Company is a neighborhood gathering place that brings together friends and families to enjoy brewed-on-site craft beers and hand-crafted, locally focused food in an upbeat and casual setting,” the brewery’s website reads. “Founded by life-long Clevelanders with deep experience in the brewing industry and a passion for building community, the brewpub aims to create an inclusive and approachable environment for enjoying and learning about beer.”

USA, OH: Saucy Brew Works announces acquisition of Cartridge Brewing
|
A Cleveland-based brewery chain and Kings Mills' Cartridge Brewing will soon become one, Cincinnati.com reported on December 2.
Saucy Brew Works, founded in 2017, announced on December 1 that it would acquire the historic craft brewery. This will be the brand's fifth location in Ohio. Saucy Brew Works also has one location in Detroit, Michigan.
Located along the Little Miami River banks, Cartridge Brewing resides in the old Peters Cartridge Co. factory, built in the 1880s. In addition to the brewery, the former factory also houses 134 apartments.
According to a press release, the Cartridge Brewing team will continue to make its signature beer in its historic facility using newly acquired Saucy Brew Works resources and knowledge. With this merger, customers can expect to see several new beers along with Cartridge classics, the press release states.
Select Cartridge beer will also be on draft at all Saucy Brew Works locations. Plans to increase Cartridge’s distribution are in development.

USA, CO: WestFax Brewing planning its second location in Colorado Springs
|
Even in spite of a world-altering pandemic and an impending recession, the craft beer scene in Colorado Springs has continued to experience rapid growth over the last four years. So much so, that according to Colorado Beer Geek, Stephen Adams, Colorado Springs has now eclipsed Boulder and Fort Collins in terms of the total number of breweries with 34 in operation. The area’s vibrant beer scene has already drawn big-name attention once, but now, a different familiar name from the Front Range is primed to join the mix, PorchDrinking reported on December 2.
In April 2019, WeldWerks Brewing announced that it would be opening a second taproom location in Colorado Springs at 3043 W. Pikes Peak Ave. But after a series of setbacks from weather-related construction delays, supply chain issues, labor shortages, and design setbacks, the project was permanently halted earlier this March 2022. However, where one door closes, another one opens, and now Denver’s WestFax Brewing is set to pick up where WeldWerks left off, by purchasing what was going to be WeldWerks’ Springs location as its own secondary taproom outpost.

USA, IL: Homewood Brewing Company officially breaks ground with the aim to open in 2024

To honor the life of Jarad “Juice Wrld” Higgins on his birthday on December 2, Higgins’ mother, Carmela Wallace, along with Homewood Mayor Richard Hofeld and Homewood Director of Business Development Angela Mesaros, officially broke ground on Homewood Brewing Company, a new state of the art brewery that gives back to the Homewood community, The Music Universe reported.
Located at 18225 Dixie Hwy, Homewood, IL – at the corner of Dixie Hwy and Miller Ct. – Homewood Brewing Company was born out of the idea of giving back to the community that welcomed Carmela when she was raising Jarad. With the involvement of Live Free 999, the non-profit started in Jarad’s honor and focused on mental health, the Wallace family hopes to collaborate with other nonprofits to bring community events to the space, in addition to craft quality products and experiences that deliver joy and make everyone’s day a little better.

USA, PA: Aslin Beer Company officially opens in Pittsburgh
|
Since late 2021 Aslin Beer Company had been working towards opening a brewery in Pittsburgh. And now the time has come for the location in the Strip District to open officially, Breweries in PA reported on December 2.
Aslin Pittsburgh, located at 1801 Smallman Street features a 10,000 square foot production facility, which includes a 10-barrel brewhouse, lagering tanks, & foeders. Also, included is a 7,000 square foot taproom, cafe, second floor mezzanine, and outdoor patio. In addition to the available draft there will be cans, bottles and Aslin merchandise available to go.
“The Pittsburgh region has always provided us with a loyal consumer base since we opened in 2015. USA, PA: Country Club Brewing set to open next week in Bethlehem
|
Just in time for holiday gatherings, a new destination for locally brewed lagers, IPAs and other beers is set to debut next weekend in south Bethlehem, WFMZ reported on December 4.
Country Club Brewing, a craft brewery serving its house-made beer alongside other regionally produced beverages such as wine and cocktails, will hold its grand opening on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 323 Pierce St., co-founder and head brewer Mike Kromer said.
The new brick building, next to the South Bethlehem Greenway between Third and Fourth streets, will feature a roughly 50-seat taproom housing low-top tables, a granite bar and a five-barrel brewing system.
"I am very excited," Kromer said. "It's been a long road, but we can't wait to finally welcome customers in here and serve them our beer."
Kromer started homebrewing more than a decade ago and in recent years joined forces with some of his friends to open Country Club.
He and his partners, Derek Mangin, Ethan Porter, Michael Recchiuti, Jose Rivera and Brandin Robinson, share a love of craft beer and started the search for their forthcoming brewery's site four years ago.

USA, IN: Indiana City Brewing Co. seeking potential buyers for its Indianapolis brewery
|
Indianapolis-based Indiana City Brewing Co. announced on December 2 it is seeking potential buyers for its brewery on the city’s near east side. The company has tapped New Mill Capital in California to lead the process of finding a new owner, the Inside Indiana Business reported.
The sale would include all equipment, intellectual property and book of business for the brewery.
Indiana City Brewing opened in 2013 at the 1904 Bottling House, a pre-prohibition-era building that was once part of the Home Brewing Co. campus and now serves as a taproom and event space.
The brewery has since grown to have its beer distributed statewide in grocery and liquor stores, as well as in bars and restaurants.
“We are extremely satisfied with the mark we have made on the local beer scene in Indianapolis over the past 10 years,” founder Ray Kamstra told Inside INdiana Business when asked what led to the decision to sell. “As the founder, I am very proud of the business I have built, and I look forward to seeing it live on, growing and thriving for many more years to come.”

USA, NC: Hillman Beer to move into former Catawba Brewing location in Morganton
|
An area brewery is now confirming that it will move into the former Catawba Brewing location in Morganton, The Morganton News Herald reported on December 6.
Last week, Greig Hillman, an owner of Hillman Beer, told The News Herald they were interested in moving into the site on South Green Street. He co-owns Hillman Beer along with his wife, Brandi, and brother, Brad.
On December 5, Hillman Beer confirmed in a press release that it plans to start renovations on the building in early 2023.
Greig Hillman told The News Herald on December 6 that Hillman Beer is in the process of purchasing the former Catawba Brewing location. He said they plan to close on the purchase in the first quarter of 2023.
While renovations are underway on the main location, Hillman said it will operate a temporary taproom across the street in the former Buff Tire location. Catawba Brewing purchased the former tire store and it served as a warehouse for the brewery.
The temporary taproom, which will serve a large selection of Hillman’s crafted beers, along with a small selection of wines and ciders, is expected to open in January, the release said.

USA, CA: Novel Brewing to shut down on December 11
|
Oakland’s Novel Brewing announced on December 2 it will be shutting down on Dec.11. A new operation called the Tenma Beer Project will move in after an unspecified period of renovation, The Mercury News reported.
In an Instagram post that signs off with “See You On The Other Side (Of The Bar),” founders Teresa Tamburello and Brian Koloszyc write:
“Our community is truly special, and we feel privileged to have been able to provide a space for all the intellectual, creative and emotional experiences to flourish. It is time for us to move on to the next chapter of our lives, but it is our hope that all of you will continue to bond and grow together in the space we have come to love.”
Novel opened on San Pablo Avenue in the Golden Gate neighborhood in 2016. It quickly became a community hub with trivia nights, book swaps and an outdoor area popular with dogs (and their owners). Tamburello and Koloszyc’s love of literature was literally all over the place, with bookshelves hanging on the wall, homemade bookmarks for patrons and beer releases like Dust Jacket IPA, Lexicon blackberry saison and Hyphen-minus pale ale.

India: AB InBev to expand its Mysuru brewery
|
Brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) that has set up a brewery unit in Mysuru, Karnataka has expressed interest to extend its plant by investing another ₹500 crore, The Hindu Business Line reported on December 6.
AB InBev Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John Crop met Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on December 5 and showed interest to invest more in the State, the CMO said in a release.
It said AB InBev is an American-Belgian multinational drink and brewing company based in Leuven, Belgium. This company has set up a brewery unit in Mysuru and wanted to extend its plan by investing another ₹500 crore.
The State was appreciated for having the best Excise policy and also a good industry-friendly atmosphere, it further said, adding that the company intends to make more investments in Karnataka.
Responding to the interest evinced, the Chief Minister promised all help from the State government.
AB InBev is one among the Fortune 500 companies in the world and has manufacturing units in 150 countries. In India, its headquarters is located in Bengaluru.
The Mysuru unit has around 2,000 employees and nearly 79 per cent of working is through renewable sources of energy.

Tsingtao Brewery, a time-honored beer brand based in Qingdao, Shandong province, is upgrading its marketing concepts in line with changing tastes, the China Daily reported on December 2, citing company officials.
Young people are reshaping the company's concept of appealing to those looking primarily for the value of their money. Instead, it is finding that it pays to attract those who want to associate the product with feelings such as warmth and uniqueness, they said.
The company has opened new types of taverns to cater to diverse demands and has seen business booms.
Tsingtao Brewery has opened more than 260 taverns in over 60 cities nationwide, and those taverns have found favor with the new generation of consumers.
At Liyuan tavern in Qingdao, the space is also set up for activities such as tea drinking, reading books and bed-and-breakfast stays.
The company said it hopes the taverns will satisfy different groups of consumers, such as those who like taking pictures, prefer a relatively quiet environment or wish to discuss business privately.
Company officials said the process of opening taverns has been very different from running breweries to produce beer. Operating their pubs means managing supply chain systems and maintaining standards across all their businesses, they said.

UK: Energy costs to sink UK pubs and brewers, research finds
|
UK’s pubs and breweries will face major financial losses, make no profit and many will be forced to shut if the energy bill relief scheme is not extended for them beyond 31 March 2023, new research has found.
In a new report by Frontier Economics, produced for the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA), calculations showed energy bills returning to their regular rate post-March would put pubs and brewers at a loss of 20% on average.
The report showed energy costs were the biggest threat to their viability and would be even more lethal when the relief scheme ends in April. This was on top of cost inflation across other parts of their businesses, from food and drink to key commodities and wage rises contributing to profit margins being erased.
Based on analysis of industry reports, accounts and interviews with pub operators and brewers from August to October 2022, the report noted how businesses had already made changes to mitigate against cost inflation where possible; from changing menu options to reducing opening hours. It flagged that energy costs were still hitting businesses hard and rises after March ‘could not be guarded against' and would be ‘crippling'.

Cuba: Netherlands' Swinkels Family Brewers invests in brewery in Cuba
|
In one of the few instances of foreign direct investment in Cuba since the beginning of the pandemic, a family-owned beer brewer from the Netherlands formed a joint venture with a Cuban state company and began construction of a brewery in the Mariel Special Development Zone, the Cuba Standard reported on December 6.
The joint venture of Swinkels Family Brewers with state company Cuba Ron SA, called Cervecería Cubana SA, is close to completion of a $100 million brewery at Mariel, which will supply up to 1 million hectolitres of Parranda-brand beer beginning in January or February, according to local media reports.
Parranda will be sold in PET bottles of 500ml and 1.5 litres.
Swinkels is the majority partner, holding 60% of the joint venture through its Spanish subsidiary.

UK: Marston's Plc posts lower-than-expected annual profit
|
UK pub operator Marston's Plc posted lower-than-expected annual profit on December 6 after the reopening of the economy after months of COVID curbs and said sales were encouraging since start of the current fiscal year.
The company's pre-tax profit was 27.7 million pounds ($33.7 million) for the 52 weeks ended Oct. 2, compared with Refinitiv analysts' estimates of 28.40 million pounds.
It had posted a loss of 100 million pounds a year earlier when UK hospitality firms were hammered by the pandemic.
