Whisky news USA, KY: Pernod Ricard to construct a new distillery in central Kentucky
A new long-term project is expected to boost the local Kentucky whiskey economy. Pernod Ricard plans to construct a new distillery for bourbon brand Jefferson’s in central Kentucky — just a 30-minute drive from nearby Bardstown, Ky., a popular site for whiskey distilling, the Vine Pair reported on December 9.

Spirits corporation Pernod Ricard holds brands such as Jameson Irish Whiskey, Absolut Vodka, and Glenlivet. It’s investing an initial $196 million (with a potential to grow to $250 million in the next decade) to construct a 75,000-square-foot facility to house Jefferson’s production, according to a Dec. 8 press release from the State of Kentucky.

“The commonwealth’s bourbon industry continues to gain momentum and grow to new heights,” Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear states in the press release. “This investment by Pernod Ricard is a welcome addition to the Lebanon and Marion County community and will reinforce our bourbon industry and set us apart in our continued sustainability efforts. I want to thank the leaders of Pernod Ricard for their vision to grow in Kentucky, and I look forward to seeing their success in the coming years.”

Plans for the 265-acre space in Lebanon, Ky., include a distillery, drying operation, three warehouses, and a visitor ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: North Vancouver council endorses Beva Brewing and Blending Ltd.’s manufacturer licence request
District of North Vancouver council voted unanimously on December 5 to endorse Beva Brewing and Blending Ltd.’s request for a manufacturer licence lounge for a yet-to-be-opened brewery at 1405 Pemberton Ave., the North Shore News reported.

The licence will allow the company to produce and serve booze. The building, which once housed the Couch Potato Sofa Store, will hold up to 70 people on the site, including staff, and there will be an outdoor patio allowed.

Although licences of that type are granted by the province’s Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch, the province offers municipal councils an early weigh-in on potential community impacts. When district notified 222 local property owners and tenants in the area, only four wrote back. One resident welcomed the concept, while three raised concerns about parking and potential noise from the site. Given the light industrial nature of the surrounding neighbourhood, district staff assessed the proposal as having “minimal” community impacts.

Council’s support for the licence was unanimous.

“As a resident of Pemberton Heights, which is just around the corner, I think this is a good location, and it’s going to add to the vitality of the area – especially as the Lions Gate community gets built out. It’s not ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: Peak Drift Brewing Company has production up and running on some of its beers and other drinks
A large-scale brewery project in north Columbia has production up and running on some of its drinks, The State reported on December 6.

Peak Drift Brewing Company, which is developing a multi-faceted production brewery and entertainment facility at 3452 North Main St. in Columbia, has launched its inaugural run of beer and hard seltzers, which will start popping up in select Midlands bars, restaurants and stores as soon as this week.

“Peak Drift is committed to celebrating everything that makes the Southeast special — the mountains, the oceans, the rivers, and most of all, the people,” Peak Drift co-owner Sara Middleton Styles said in a release. “Through our innovative production facility, award-winning products and new brewery coming to the North Main area, we are dedicated to industry collaboration and strengthening our local communities.”

The Peak Drift Brewing project is a multi-million dollar endeavor that is still under development on North Main. The building at 3452 North Main was originally built in the 1940s and was operated for years by Stone Manufacturing. It was a garment factory for decades. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020.

Aside from the now up and running production side, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Big Sewickley Creek Brewery coming to Sewickley
Even before his 21st birthday, Marc Gignac was a beer fan.

As a kid, the Detroit native associated the beverage with the Tigers Major League Baseball team, which had a partnership with Stroh’s, and he couldn’t wait to join his fellow fans in the suds-drinking club, the Pittsburgh Magazine reported on December 5.

Now, the retired urologist with a penchant for pups and tie-dye T-shirts has built a clubhouse of sorts for folks who want to relax by the water with a beer and live music.

Big Sewickley Creek Brewery in Economy will hold the first of three soft opening weekends starting Friday, Dec. 16 at 4 p.m. On Jan. 6, regular hours will be 4 to 10 p.m. Friday, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Going pro isn’t a solo journey for the former Allegheny General Hospital kidney expert. Co-owners include his wife, Gina Rooker, a practicing urologist; and his brother Chris Gignac, who recently retired from a career in health care.

About two years ago, the family purchased a parcel at 2030 Big Sewickley Creek Road in Beaver County and constructed a 4,000-square-foot structure made of glass, concrete and steel. Several garage doors open ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Hundred Mile Brewing Company to celebrate soft opening this month
This December, Hundred Mile Brewing Company (HMBC) celebrates its soft opening in Tempe at 690. N. Scottsdale Road, Signals AZ reported on December 6.

The brewery boasts unique beers brewed onsite and served as fresh as possible by award winning brewer, Valerie Adee, as well as other local brews. In addition, a comprehensive menu designed by Chefs Nick Bymaster and Tyler Anderson will pair perfectly with every sip. HMBC also offers an extensive wine and craft cocktail menu.

Due to the time it takes to develop scratch-made beers and the nature of this process, the soft opening will showcase a wide variety of local AZ beers in their taproom.

During the soft opening, HMBC will have a daily drawing for $100 gift cards. In celebration of being adjacent to ASU’s campus, as well as both the owner and brewer being ASU alums, they will host Sun Devil Sunday on December 11 and offer 15 percent off to anyone wearing ASU gear.

Brewery news USA, PA: Carbon Copy to launch in former Dock Street West Brewery location on December 10
Kyle Wolak and Brendon Boudwin, who have two decades of combined brewery experience, will open the doors at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 10 to Carbon Copy, their beer/wine-focused restaurant at 50th Street and Baltimore Avenue, in the former West Philadelphia firehouse that formerly housed Dock Street West Brewery, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on December 7.

They’ve brightened it up to allow sunlight to stream in from both sides. There is a combination of high-top and regular tables. Counter seating offers a view of the brewing equipment. (They make their wines in Kensington.)

The menu from chefs Bill Braun and Alyston Upshaw is what you’d call easy pub food, with solid vegetarian-forward options such as chips and dip; a mixed salad with miso garlic dressing and quinoa crunch; charred cauliflower; and gnocchi. The outlier is a pork belly dish with root vegetables, greens, and mustard au jus.

All beers are on tap and are available to go via growlers. The production of 16-ounce cans will start next year.

Both Wolak and Boudwin have worked in every aspect of production at breweries all over the world, including Modern Times Beer (San Diego), Three Floyds (Indiana), Warpigs (Copenhagen), Hill Farmstead (Vermont), and Tired Hands (Philadelphia and Ardmore), ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Lagunitas’ brewery and taproom in Seattle to close permanently early in January
Lagunitas’ brewery and taproom in Seattle will close, permanently, on January 8th, the Washington Beer Blog reported on December 8.

The company said it will close its Seattle outpost in order to lend more focus to its locations in Petaluma and Chicago as it moves forward.

The weekend of January 6th through 8th, Lagunitas will have some great live music, along with food and drink specials. On top of that, lots of freebies and swag to give away. The closing weekend crescendos with a show by the Dusty 45s, a Seattle-based Americana outfit that takes its cues from rock, rhythm and blues, and honky-tonk.

Brewery news USA, PA: Liquid Noise Brewing to close its doors permanently
Marysville’s Liquid Noise Brewing will be closing its doors permanently, after almost 3 years in business, Breweries in PA reported on December 5.

Known for great music and beer, Liquid Noise has been serving Marysville since it first opened almost 3 years ago in January of 2029.

The brewery announced the closure on social media in the following post:

“From a worldwide pandemic to loss of loved ones, Liquid Noise pushed through, but it saddens us to announce that just shy of our 3-year birthday our tour has come to an end. We will be closing our doors sometime in December. We will continue to operate our currents days and hours until our closing date is announced. We value all the new friends that we have made during our journey and appreciate all the loyal friends that have shown their support for us.

“We encourage you to please use any gift cards or trivia winnings at this time until we announce our final show date.”

Brewery news USA, FL: St Petersburg’s Avid Brew Company announces closure at the end of the month
In a sad announcement for the local craft beer community, St. Pete’s Avid Brew Company announced this week that it is closing at the end of the month. The popular spot in Grand Central started as one of the city’s first homebrewing shops, and eventually opened its own microbrewery and bar in the back of the store, I Love the Burg reported on December 6.

The brewery had just undergone extensive renovations a couple years ago, though they are now one of many businesses on the block moving out as a new development project comes in. As of now, we’re unsure what the future holds for Avid beyond the assurance that “good things are coming,” though the shop and brewery are both undergoing a bit of a firesale, with brewing goods heavily marked down.

Of course, what kind of brewery would they be if the final days weren’t turned into a big party? To commemorate a wonderful run in the neighborhood, Avid is throwing a Grand Closing Party on New Year’s Eve, complete with all-you-can-drink beer for $20, live bands, and deep discounts on supplies in the brewing store.

Avid Brew Company is located at 1745 1st Ave S, and is open 12-8 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Auld Brewing Co. closes its doors in downtown Lubbock
Downtown Lubbock saw a brewery close its doors for the final time on December 6, months after celebrating its first anniversary, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported.

Auld Brewing Co. at 515 Broadway, opened on Aug. 27, 2021. Through the past several months, Auld "worked tirelessly to stay afloat," according to a company statement by Ray and Andrea Auld on social media.

"We sacrificed our family, our health and our peace, never producing the winning outcome we had hoped," the post stated. "We are grateful for the opportunity we had here in Lubbock and could not have asked for more kindness from our visitors. There is no doubt, we survived this long because of you. The continued support and loyalty of all of you will be cherished and you will forever be remembered as friends!"

While the Lubbock location has closed its doors, parts of the brewery will appear in the Borger brewery. The system will move to Borger, and the support planks will be "hung with respect to all those who came and drank with us. It is only fitting they be shown the same love in Borger."

People who want their support plank returned can stop by the Broadway building through the week and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Headtrip Brewery to serve its last beer this month
There was a moment about a year ago, as the clouds of the coronavirus pandemic hovered, when Tom Mitchell turned to brewer and business partner Nick Seagle with a loaded question, Cleveland.com reported on December 8.

“We were already kind of talking about just how everything’s going,” Seagle said. “And he asked, ‘Do you want to do this still?’ And I said, ‘Not really.’ And he goes, ‘Me neither.’ "

For his part, Mitchell breathed easier at that moment, the two of them near the fermenters. “Thank goodness,” he said, “because it could have been a point of contention.”

Seagle added: “It was just getting so frustrating.”

That frustration ends this month when Headtrip Brewery will serve its last beer. The pals opened the brewery in December 2017. Since then, along with Sierra Guterba working business and marketing aspects, the brewery had found its niche as a comfortable hangout in a strip mall in Stow.

Their reasons dovetailed into what is becoming a Covid refrain: Pandemic restrictions affecting the bottom line, supply-chain issues, cost increases and looming rent. They had mulled a restaurant venture but dismissed that idea. As their lease came due they made the decision to close up shop at Norton and Darrow ...More info on site

Barley news France: Nearly all wheat and barley fields in good condition in France
Nearly all French wheat and barley fields are in good condition as crops head into their winter dormancy phase, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on December 9.

Regular rainfall and warm temperatures during autumn helped sowing and early cereal growth in France, the European Union's biggest producer.

An intensifying cold spell this week is being monitored by the market although traders say the cooling of temperatures may help plants build up resistance if frosts remain moderate.

For soft wheat, France's main cereal variety, an estimated 97% of crops were in good or excellent condition in the week to Dec. 5, FranceAgriMer said.

That was down slightly from 98% the previous week and also just below a 98% rating in the same week last year, it said.

Nearly all soft wheat and barley crops had emerged and were running about a week ahead of the average growth pace of the past five years, FranceAgriMer said.

The favourable growing conditions suggest strong yield potential for next year's harvest. But French crops tend to be more affected by weather from spring onwards, like this year when drought and heat stressed crops.

FranceAgriMer will resume its weekly cereal reports in February after a winter break for the dormancy period.

Brewery news Australia & India: Australia’s craft brewer Coopers secures new distributor in India
Coopers craft beers are available across India after the Australian brewery secured a new distributor. This follows an introduction by Austrade to VBev, one of India’s largest importers and distributors of wine, spirits and beer, the Mirage News reported on December 8.

‘Coopers is the only Australian craft beer in the Indian market,’ says John Southwell, Trade and Investment Commissioner, Austrade India. ‘VBev’s nationwide network means Coopers’ craft beers will become more widely available to Indian consumers.

‘There are not many imported craft beers as many international beer brands have set up their own breweries in India. We expect Coopers beers to do well in India, especially in states where there is less tax on beer.’

Founded in 1862, Coopers Brewery is the largest Australian-owned brewery. It makes ales, stouts and lagers and has been brewing its signature Pale Ale for 6 generations. Coopers uses only natural ingredients including malt, hops, sugar, water and a special yeast strain that’s over 90 years old.

Beer accounts for a third of the Indian alcoholic beverages market, in volume terms. Euromonitor projects the total volume of beer will increase at a 6% CAGR to reach 2.9 billion litres in 2025.

India is home to around 440 million millennials. ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Hite collaborates with Australia’s Joe White Maltings on a special edition single malt beer
South Korean brewer Hite has collaborated with Australia’s Joe White Maltings on a special edition single malt beer made exclusively from Tasmanian barley, the Beer and Brewer reported on December 5.

Terra Single Malt For Christmas is an extension of Hite’s ascendant all-malt lager brand Terra, which has been brewed exclusively from Australian grown malt supplied by Joe White since the beer’s inception in 2019.

The special edition doubles down on the Australian provenance story that underpins the beer, showcasing barley supplied by Joe White’s Tasmanian barley provider, Vaucluse Agriculture Company, which was malted at Joe White’s Devonport facility.

It is packaged in cans featuring a QR code that consumers can scan and trace the origins of the malt, from barley farm to harvest to malting – including dates, times and processes – made possible by Joe White and Vaucluse’s fully traceable supply chain.

Joe White Asia Pacific Key Account Manager Daniel Baillon said the project continues the maltster’s longstanding relationship with Hite.

“Hite was eager to offer its customers an end-to-end view of the product through a ‘grain to glass’ concept and we were able to work with valuable partners such as Vaucluse to deliver a product that was fully traceable,” he said.

“The market ...More info on site
