World: Budweiser setting its sights on being the "King of Non-Alcoholic Beers"
|
At Budweiser, the "King of Beers" is setting its sights on being the "King of Non-Alcoholic Beers," according to one top beverage analyst, AOL reported on December 12.
"Alcohol-free beer is a key growth segment, with the company continuing to invest behind growth of Budweiser Zero as well as opening the platform for craft breweries as well," Evercore ISI's Robert Ottenstein wrote in a new note.
Ottenstein shared observations from a Beverage Digest presentation he attended last week, where AB InBev management discussed major growth drivers such as non-alcoholic beer and hard seltzers.
"Stigmas behind non-alcoholic [beer] from consumers have been falling, led by Europe but now seeing similar trends in the U.S. as well," Ottenstein added.
The analyst has an Outperform rating on AB InBev with a $70 price target, implying an upside of 17% from current levels.
Budweiser Zero — which contains no alcohol, as its name implies — debuted in the summer of 2020. And that launch was well-timed.
Total dollar sales of non-alcoholic drinks in the U.S. stood at $395 million, up 20.6% year over year, through August of this year, according to data from NielsenIQ. Non-alcoholic beer made up 85.3% of that total sales figure, with a market valued at $328.6

Mexico: Grupo Modelo raises prices, citing inflation
|
With more than 10 beer brands in the market, Grupo Modelo announced prices hike as from December 12 owing to inflation, the National Small Business Association (ANPEC) reported.
Among the beers affected are labels like Corona, Modelo, Pacífico, Modelo Especial, Victoria, Negra Modelo, Montejo and León. Information about the new price tags was not available by the time this article was written.
With an average consumption of 55 to 68 litres per year, beer is one of the beverages most consumed by Mexicans. At the same time, it is one of the products inflation has hit the hardest.
According to the national statistics institute, INEGI, beer prices in México rose 11.7% in October — the beverage’s largest variation in prices in more than 12 years. While national inflation reached 8.5%, the INEGI data shows that the price of beer has increased at a faster rate than inflation in the last four months.
Globally, beer has also been affected by inflation. According to the Beer Index (carried out by investment firm eToro), the cost of beer production has increased 62% in the last two years. Thailand: Recent easing of restrictions on small breweries still seen as protection for dominant players

Thailand's recent easing of restrictions on small breweries could crack open a beer market that is essentially a duopoly, but some argue the government still aims to protect the dominant players by opting for less-ambitious measures, the Nikkei Asia reported on December12.
Beer aficionados met at a park outside Bangkok late last month to celebrate the occasion, with small-scale brewing equipment brought in for the event.
"I want to try making something bitter and aromatic," one red-faced attendee said.
Previously, getting a brewery license required at least 10 million baht ($286,000) in capital and annual production of 100,000 to 1 million litres - in other words, a minimum equivalent to nearly 300,000 cans. Both of these hurdles were scrapped with amendments to Finance Ministry regulations implemented Nov. 2.
The looser regulations will make it easier for newcomers to enter the market, encouraging more diversity, said Wichit Saiklao, founder of Chit Beer, a popular brewery. More than 90% of Thailand's beer market is controlled by Boon Rawd Brewery and Thai Beverage, makers of the Singha and Chang brands, respectively.

India: Craft beer maker Bira 91 becomes legal entity ahead of initial public offering
|
Gearing up for its initial public offering (IPO), craft beer maker Bira 91 has now become a legal entity. As per the company’s regulatory filings, the startup has converted into a public company and renamed itself as B9 Beverages Limited, Inc42 reported on December 12.
The conversion to a public company marks a key milestone in its plans to list on the Indian bourses. Post this, the startup will file its draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) with the market regulator Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI). In the prospectus, the startup will specify the amount it plans to raise and its financial health.
Meanwhile, the company’ board has given its green light to expand the employee stock options (ESOP) pool. As part of this, a special resolution was passed to increase Bira 91’s existing ESOP pool by 1,566,390 options. The company’s ESOP pool now stands at 3,649,199 options.
Founded in 2015 by Ankur Jain, Bira 91 sells crafted beers and has a presence in 550 towns and cities across 18 countries.

Cameroon: Brewer SABC rebrands, launches 5-year investment program
|
Brewing Company SABC, formerly known as Société Anonyme des brasseries du Cameroun, announced its rebranding into Société Anonyme des boissons du Cameroun. As part of this new era, the company is also launching a 5-year investment program to inject CFA200 billion into its expansion, Business in Cameroon reported on December 13.
As a reminder, SABC is also expected to conclude the takeover of Guinness Cameroun by the end of this year or early 2023, following the approval of competition authorities. The CFA300 billion deal was officially announced on July 14, 2022.
As of 2023, investments will focus on increasing both SABC and Guinness products in Cameroon, we learned. Specifically, the company will build three new production lines for Guinness products Yaoundé, Garoua, and Bafoussam. According to Stéphane Descazeaud, CEO of SABC, these three lines will have a total annual production capacity of 2.1 million hectoliters.
The investment program launched by the SABC also includes an increase in the production of glass packaging at the Société Camerounaise de Verrerie (Socaver) in Douala. USA: Judge rejects Grupo Modelo’s request to hold Constellation Brands liable for selling Corona-branded hard seltzer without permission
|
A Manhattan federal judge on December 13 rejected a request from Anheuser-Busch InBev SA's Grupo Modelo to hold Constellation Brands Inc liable for allegedly selling Corona-branded hard seltzer without its permission, Reuters reported.
U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled that Modelo is not entitled to an immediate pre-trial win in its trademark case against Constellation, the U.S. distributor of its Corona beer. Kaplan also denied Constellation's bid to end the case early last month.
The decision sets up a jury trial that could turn on how the companies defined the word "beer" in a trademark licensing agreement.
Representatives from Constellation and AB InBev did not immediately respond to requests for comment on December 14.
Modelo filed the lawsuit last year, arguing Constellation's Corona Hard Seltzer breached a licensing agreement and infringed its trademarks. It said the agreement only allowed Constellation to sell beer under the Corona name.
Constellation said the agreement's definition of "beer" also covers hard seltzer, while Modelo said no reasonable jury could find that it encompasses hard seltzer.
Kaplan said on December 13 that Modelo's argument may be stronger, but the agreement's definition of "beer" was still too ambiguous to determine before trial.

Ukraine: Ukraine exports 1.5 mln tonnes of barley in 2022/23 season
|
Ukraine has exported almost 19.7 million tonnes of grain so far in the 2022/23 season, down 31.5% from the 28.7 million tonnes exported by the same stage of the previous season, agriculture ministry data showed on December 14.
The volume included around 7.3 million tonnes of wheat, 10.8 million tonnes of corn and about 1.5 million tonnes of barley.
After an almost six-month blockade caused by the Russian invasion, three Ukrainian Black Sea ports were unblocked at the end of July under a deal between Moscow and Kyiv brokered by the United Nations and Turkey.
The government has said that Ukraine could harvest about 51 million tonnes of grain this year, down from a record 86 million tonnes in 2021, because of the loss of land to Russian forces and lower yields.
