USA: Brewers Association releases 2022 Year in Beer report

As the year draws to a close, the Brewers Association (BA)—the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American craft brewers—recounts a year filled with varied growth, continued supply chain disruptions, and increased competition. Despite these challenges, 2022 also saw a return to in-person events and the nurturing of the next generation of craft beer professionals.
2022 saw more than 9,500 breweries operating in the United States. About 550 new breweries opened, and about 200 closed, the association reported.
Breweries, bars, and restaurants continued their long and unsteady recovery in 2022, and while total on-premise sales bounced back to their previous trends, draught beer is still recovering. Small and local brewpubs and taprooms proved nimble during continued supply disruptions, faring better than micros and regionals fighting for shelf space in an increasingly competitive distribution climate.
Climate change and persisting supply and ingredient disruptions and shortages continued to plague brewers throughout the year. Denmark & Canada: Carlsberg agrees to buy Canadian Waterloo Brewing
|
Danish brewer Carlsberg said on December 15 it had agreed to buy Canadian Waterloo Brewing for a total equity value of around 144 million Canadian dollars ($106 million) in cash, Reuters reported.
The deal is part of Carlsberg's strategy towards 2027 to grow in categories beyond its core beer market, adding products like cider, seltzers and premium brand beers.
"Carlsberg's international beer and cider portfolio complements Waterloo Brewing's portfolio of local beers and ready-to-drink beverages," said Carlsberg in a statement.
It expected the deal, still subject to approval by Waterloo's security holders, to close in the first half of 2023. Boards of both companies have approved the transaction and Waterloo's board recommends shareholders to vote in favour.
Waterloo shareholders will received 4 Canadian dollars (CAD) in cash for each share held. The stock closed at 3.35 CAD on December 14, Refinitiv data showed.

UK: Whisky prices rise most in UK pubs, restaurants, and cafes
|
The cost of going out drinking has increased ahead of Christmas, with wine, gin and whisky prices rising in the UK, BBC reported on December 14.
All alcohol prices rose last month at pubs, restaurants and cafes, with the cost of bitter and lager also up.
The amount consumers pay for a night out is now increasing at its fastest rate since 1991, official figures show.
It came as overall inflation - the rate at which prices rise - eased slightly but the cost of living is still rising at its fastest pace in 40 years.
Prices increased by 10.7% in the year to November, compared with 11.1% in October, leading some analysts to predict that soaring inflation may now slowly begin to fall.
Inflation is a measure of the cost of living and to calculate it, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) keeps track of the prices of hundreds of everyday items.
Lower inflation does not mean the prices of goods will go down, just that they will stop rising as quickly.
The fall in the overall rate of inflation in November was due to petrol prices easing from record highs, and lower prices for second hand cars.

Canada: Prices for feed barley and wheat coming down
|
Prices for feed barley and wheat are coming down on the Prairies, said Susanne Leclerc of Market Master Ltd. in Edmonton — and a big part of that trend is the lack of demand for either commodity, the Country Guide reported on December 15.
“Buyers are fairly well covered. There seems to be a lack of desire for buyers to cover themselves on barley, having sufficient coverage on the corn,” Leclerc said.
She also noted lack of demand for feed wheat, as corn continued to be imported from the U.S., replacing both grains at numerous feedlots.
A shortage last year of barley and wheat saw Prairie prices skyrocket and feedlots turn to U.S. corn. Although there are sufficient supplies of barley and wheat across Western Canada, corn has remained less expensive.
However, Leclerc noted, several elevators in Alberta were still running specials on gradable wheat.
“If you got gradable wheat, definitely check with the elevators,” she said.
One major issue that has continued to plague the feed market has been the severe shortage of trucks and truck drivers.
“It hasn’t gotten any better. The government needs to do something about it because it’s really affecting our industry,” Leclerc said.
