USA: Brewers Association releases 2022 Year in Beer report
|
As the year draws to a close, the Brewers Association (BA)—the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American craft brewers—recounts a year filled with varied growth, continued supply chain disruptions, and increased competition. Despite these challenges, 2022 also saw a return to in-person events and the nurturing of the next generation of craft beer professionals.
2022 saw more than 9,500 breweries operating in the United States. About 550 new breweries opened, and about 200 closed, the association reported.
Breweries, bars, and restaurants continued their long and unsteady recovery in 2022, and while total on-premise sales bounced back to their previous trends, draught beer is still recovering. Small and local brewpubs and taprooms proved nimble during continued supply disruptions, faring better than micros and regionals fighting for shelf space in an increasingly competitive distribution climate.
Climate change and persisting supply and ingredient disruptions and shortages continued to plague brewers throughout the year. Although the 2022 barley harvest improved, the severe depletion of stocks in 2021 kept supplies tight and prices high in a dynamic and changing market. 2022 hop acreage declined slightly in the U.S., while the European harvest was the worst in decades. Disruptions in the supply of aluminum cans and

Denmark & Canada: Carlsberg agrees to buy Canadian Waterloo Brewing
|
Danish brewer Carlsberg said on December 15 it had agreed to buy Canadian Waterloo Brewing for a total equity value of around 144 million Canadian dollars ($106 million) in cash, Reuters reported.
The deal is part of Carlsberg's strategy towards 2027 to grow in categories beyond its core beer market, adding products like cider, seltzers and premium brand beers.
"Carlsberg's international beer and cider portfolio complements Waterloo Brewing's portfolio of local beers and ready-to-drink beverages," said Carlsberg in a statement.
It expected the deal, still subject to approval by Waterloo's security holders, to close in the first half of 2023. Boards of both companies have approved the transaction and Waterloo's board recommends shareholders to vote in favour.
Waterloo shareholders will received 4 Canadian dollars (CAD) in cash for each share held. The stock closed at 3.35 CAD on December 14, Refinitiv data showed.

USA, KY: Atrium Brewing planning second location in Louisville
|
Cheers, Louisville! A familiar local brewer has plans to open a second location, the Courier-Journal reported on December 14.
Atrium Brewing, a brewery based out of Shelby Park, is opening a new spot in Norton Commons on the North Village Town Square, according to the neighborhood's Facebook page.
No official date is set, but the new Atrium is planning to open in early 2023, according to its Facebook page. If you're curious about what it'll have to offer, the brewery currently has one taproom open at 1154 Logan St.
Atrium brews its own beers and offers a unique menu with options like Key Lime Pie Boy, which has key lime, toasted coconut, cinnamon and vanilla. Seasonal offerings include choices like the Yuletide Joy, which includes coffee, cacao nibs, vanilla and "holiday spices," and the brewery has a full menu with more traditional choices as well. Several of its beers are available at other spots around town, including a place on the new TopGolf's local craft brew list.
Atrium first opened in Sept. 2020 and more than two years later the team behind the brewery "continues to seek to bring their passion for making beer to our city through a series of ever-evolving experimental and

USA, WA: Brick West Brewing Co. expanding with new brewery and taproom
|
Brick West Brewing Co. is expanding with a new taproom north of Spokane and is planning a new taproom and second brewing facility in West Spokane, near Airway Heights, the Spokane Journal of Business reported on December 15.
Co-owner Jordan Tampien says construction on the planned second brewing facility will likely begin next summer, with a grand opening in summer 2024. Tampien owns Brick West with his brother, Joel Tampien, and another pair of brothers, Matt and Ryan Goodwin. He says the foursome bought the 6-acre site at 1624 S. Spotted Road, just north of Spokane International Airport, in 2020, with the intent to grow the production side of Brick West.
“COVID ramped up canning for us,” Tampien says.
Brick West is heading into its third year of operations at its flagship brewing facility and taproom at 1318 W. First, downtown.
“Now, we’re canning, and we’re getting asked to do contracts, and we can’t produce enough beer, because we’re selling so much (at the downtown taproom),” Tampien says. “We have the demand and the ability. We just literally can’t produce enough.”
Tampien says that Brick West’s income streams are split, with roughly 70% from the tap room, and 30% from distribution sales. He hopes that

USA, CO: Salt Road Brewing set to launch in Fort Collins this coming spring
|
After five years as a German taproom, a sprawling brick building in Fort Collins Old Town's Old Firehouse Alley is officially changing allegiances — just ask the giant German flag mural that was recently painted over as part of its clean slate, The Coloradoan reported on December 16.
Old Town's former Prost Brewing taproom, 321 Old Firehouse Alley, is set to become Salt Road Brewing, a new brewery offering a range of world beer styles with a focus on Colorado ingredients, according to co-founder Scott Ficarra.
After getting into home brewing while living in California in the mid-1990s, and pursuing the hobby more seriously after moving to Windsor in 2011, Scott said his wife and Salt Road Brewery co-founder Kelly Ficarra encouraged him to pursue his dream of opening a brewery.
The couple started searching for vacant storefronts and buildings in Windsor, Greeley and Fort Collins about four years ago, Scott said.
"I never thought Fort Collins would happen," Scott said, adding that he's nervous about the brewery's placement due to Fort Collins' reputation as "such a high-end place for brewing."
"I kind of plopped myself into the middle of the big leagues," he added.
But after the couple's four-year building search proved fruitless — at

Canada: Prices for feed barley and wheat coming down
|
Prices for feed barley and wheat are coming down on the Prairies, said Susanne Leclerc of Market Master Ltd. in Edmonton — and a big part of that trend is the lack of demand for either commodity, the Country Guide reported on December 15.
“Buyers are fairly well covered. There seems to be a lack of desire for buyers to cover themselves on barley, having sufficient coverage on the corn,” Leclerc said.
She also noted lack of demand for feed wheat, as corn continued to be imported from the U.S., replacing both grains at numerous feedlots.
A shortage last year of barley and wheat saw Prairie prices skyrocket and feedlots turn to U.S. corn. Although there are sufficient supplies of barley and wheat across Western Canada, corn has remained less expensive.
However, Leclerc noted, several elevators in Alberta were still running specials on gradable wheat.
“If you got gradable wheat, definitely check with the elevators,” she said.
One major issue that has continued to plague the feed market has been the severe shortage of trucks and truck drivers.
“It hasn’t gotten any better. The government needs to do something about it because it’s really affecting our industry,” Leclerc said.

USA, FL: Proof Brewing Company to open its second location in Tallahassee
|
The footprint of Tallahassee's largest craft brewing company is about to get bigger, the Tallahassee Democrat reported on December 15.
Proof Brewing Company inked a deal with Florida State University and Seminole Dining to open its second capital city location. The new venture, Proof at FSU, will be housed on the ground floor of the university's new student union and serve classic pub fare.
It's slated to open in early 2023. The 5,000 square-foot space will be adjacent to the union's 12-lane bowling alley. It will serve up to 150 customers and operate seven days a week for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch hours.
Proof at FSU will serve eight draft lines, including rotating, specialty and sour variations. The full-service bar also will serve craft cocktails, boutique wine, mocktails and non-alcoholic drinks.
Founded by Byron & Angela Burroughs in 2012, Proof Brewing Company operates its flagship location on 1320 S. Monroe St. Byron Burroughs called the expansion a "fantastic opportunity for us as a brand and as a local business to be able to partner with Seminole Dining."
"We were approached by Seminole Dining, who wanted to have a local partner to come in and run the operation, and we were very excited for the

USA, OH: North High Brewing to close original Columbus location
|
The countdown is on to grab one last pint at North High Brewing’s original location in Columbus’ Short North, the Columbus Underground reported on December 15.
The brewery at 1288 N. High St. will celebrate 10 years then say goodbye on Wednesday, December 28.
Owner Gavin Meyers says it was a difficult decision to leave the Short North, but the closure represents a new direction for the still-growing brewery.
There were a number of factors that influenced the decision to close. Meyers says the location had seen a big downturn in business starting with the High Street revitalization project in 2018. After construction, there was COVID.
Situated between Fifth and King avenues, the location is a bit of an island between Short North and campus, Meyers says. The address also didn’t have a patio or any outdoor space – a big plus in a COVID/post-COVID world.
The industry itself has seen some big shifts over the last decade as well.
“Back in the day we were the seventh brewery to open in Central Ohio,” Meyers says. “Now there’s 70.”
And a significant part of that growth has been in the outerbelt reaches of Central Ohio. Meyers says a lot of the businesses that customers were coming to

UK: Whisky prices rise most in UK pubs, restaurants, and cafes
|
The cost of going out drinking has increased ahead of Christmas, with wine, gin and whisky prices rising in the UK, BBC reported on December 14.
All alcohol prices rose last month at pubs, restaurants and cafes, with the cost of bitter and lager also up.
The amount consumers pay for a night out is now increasing at its fastest rate since 1991, official figures show.
It came as overall inflation - the rate at which prices rise - eased slightly but the cost of living is still rising at its fastest pace in 40 years.
Prices increased by 10.7% in the year to November, compared with 11.1% in October, leading some analysts to predict that soaring inflation may now slowly begin to fall.
Inflation is a measure of the cost of living and to calculate it, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) keeps track of the prices of hundreds of everyday items.
Lower inflation does not mean the prices of goods will go down, just that they will stop rising as quickly.
The fall in the overall rate of inflation in November was due to petrol prices easing from record highs, and lower prices for second hand cars.
However, the price of drinking alcohol in pubs, restaurants
