North America: Kirin looking to buy facilities in North America to maintain strong growth in craft beer market
|
Kirin Holdings, Japan's second-largest brewer by sales, is looking to buy factory facilities in North America to maintain strong growth in the region's craft beer market, its chief executive said.
Kirin has seen sales volumes in the North American craft beer market climb by double-digit percentage figures since completing its acquisition of Colorado-based New Belgium Brewing in 2020 and Bell's Brewery in Michigan in 2021, Reuters reported on December 21.
"Our craft beer business in North America is on a roll," CEO Yoshinori Isozaki said in an interview with Reuters on December 20.
North American craft beer has the highest growth rate among global businesses that span everything from whisky to probiotic health drinks, he added, without disclosing profit margins.
New Belgium is known for its Fat Tire ale while the Two Hearted Ale brand by Bell's was named the best beer in America by the American Homebrewers Association. Their merger in 2021 combined two of the top 10 craft makers in the United States.
Kirin had craft beer sales of about 60 billion yen ($454 million) in 2021, accounting for 3% of global sales. The company expects that to grow to 5% this year.

Canada: More Canadians opting for non-alcoholic beer
|
With the holiday season in full swing and "Dry January" around the corner, Canadians who don't drink alcohol or want to cut back may find more options on menus and store shelves, The Canadian Press reported on December 18.
Beer giants are launching non-alcoholic brews, specialty producers are creating innovative alternatives to spirits and those in the industry say it's becoming more socially acceptable to be "sober curious" — a term used to describe people dipping their toes in the non-alcoholic waters.
“Ten years ago, you would go into a party with a non-alcoholic beer, and people would ask you if you're pregnant or sick,” said Nicolas Gagnon-Oosterwaal, president and co-founder of Montreal-based brewery Sober Carpenter.
“But now ... it’s completely the other way around.”
Gagnon-Oosterwaal said just like public perception, the non-alcoholic beverage industry has come a long way, but there's still more growth to come.
Global Market Insights estimates worldwide, the non-alcoholic beer market was worth more than US$22 billion in 2022 and will be worth almost double that in a decade.
“What happened for craft beer in the last five, 10 years, I think will happen in the next five, 10 years for non-alcoholic (drinks)," Gagnon-Oosterwaal said.
Non-alcoholic beer has been around

Singapore: ThaiBev enters into four-year 10 bln baht loan agreement to repay existing debenture due March
|
ThaiBev has entered into a four-year 10 billion baht ($388.9 million) loan agreement with the Bank of Ayudhya Public Company Limited. The loan agreement was made to repay the group’s existing Thai Baht debenture due in March 2023, The Edge Singapore reported on December 20.
The interest rate on the loan agreement is based on the Thai Overnight Repurchase Rate (THOR), including margins. The group will have to repay the facility through four equal instalments of 2.5 billion baht on a semi-annual basis. The first instalment is due on the 30th month after the drawdown period of the loan agreement, which is not later than March 31, 2023.
The loan facility is not expected to have a material impact on ThaiBev’s financial results for this FY.
Shares in ThaiBev closed flat at 67.5 cents on Dec 19.

Taiwan: Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation not giving up China beer market
|
The Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation (TTL) said on December 17 it will work to meet Chinese requirements without compromising “Taiwan’s national dignity” following a new import ban by Beijing, the Taiwan News reported.
China imposed fresh restrictions on Taiwanese products last week over “inadequate registration information," a move some have slammed as politically motivated. Items hit by the rule include aquatic, liquor, and food products.
Among the affected is Taiwan Beer, a beer brand operated by TTL. The company said it will halt the production of beer for orders worth NT$1.3 million (US$42,211), originally scheduled to be shipped to China in December.
Describing the ban as “abstract,” the state-owned manufacturer and distributor of alcohol and cigarettes said it will submit documents as required. However, it will not cooperate if Chinese requests jeopardize Taiwan’s national dignity.
According to TTL, China introduced a new registration rule for imported foods and beverages this year. The company has complied since August, and the code it secured had appeared “valid” until recently.
The company has sought to reduce its reliance on the China market due to rising uncertainties, with strategies like promoting its fruit beer products in the U.S. and Europe. In 2021, China accounted for roughly 25% of

Australia & China: Australia seeks direct resolution of barley trade dispute with China ahead of WTO ruling
|
The international trade umpire is set to rule within months on Australia’s complaints against China’s trade sanctions, setting up a deadline for the diplomatic thaw to produce a breakthrough, The Guardian reported on December 19.
As Australia and China prepare to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations on December 21, the trade minister, Don Farrell, said he was prepared to meet the Chinese commerce minister at any time and place to seek a resolution.
“I’ve made it clear that if and when they want to meet, we’re very happy to do so,” he told Guardian Australia.
China’s introduction of an 80% tariff on Australian barley in 2020 effectively ended the trade in that product overnight, prompting the then Morrison government to complain to the World Trade Organization.
The WTO panel considering the barley dispute said it expected to issue its final report to the parties in the first three months of 2023.
But the complaint against China’s subsequent tariffs on Australian wine will take longer: the WTO’s panel “does not expect to issue its final report to the parties before mid-2023”.
The WTO noted the “voluminous submissions from the parties” and the complexity of the disputes.
China’s commerce ministry has argued the tariffs are justified by

Australia: October malting barley exports double the tonnage shipped in September
|
Australia exported 84,776 tonnes of malting barley, 162,216t of feed barley and 271,497t of sorghum in October, according to the latest export data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
While the malting figure was double the tonnage shipped in September, feed barley exports plunged 76pc from 662,421t and sorghum fell 31pc from 395,447t.
The three biggest destinations for Oct0ber-shipped malting barley were Mexico on 33,002t, Japan on 28,750t and South Africa on 15,000t.
On feed barley, Japan 0n 100,013t and Qatar on 55,125t were the only volume bulk customers, with Saudi Arabia notable in its absence.
China was once again the dominant volume customer on sorghum, taking 264,958t, or 98pc, of the volume shipped.
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache described October barley exports as “dismal”.
“Supplies have essentially run out in Victoria and South Australia, and programs have ground to a halt,” Mr Roache said.
“Western Australia’s old-crop situation was also fairly tight on stocks following the record export program over the season.”
He said this was in “stark comparison” to wheat carry-out, which sits at close to record levels, and is up 30pc from the 2020-21 season.
Mr Roach said malt demand remained strong, with a “very consistent demand profile” across the season.
“We expect this
