USA, NH: Aviation Brewing Company plans to begin brewing in Dover this coming spring

The Cocheco Mills has lost two brewpubs over the last five years: 7th Settlement Brewery in 2018 and, in August, Smuttlabs Brewery and Kitchen, a business under the Smuttynose Brewing Company umbrella, the Foster’s Daily Democrat reported on December 21.
In recent days, the doors to another brewery opened in the Chinburg Properties-owned building, and its founder is eager to hit the ground running in a Dover space he had his eye on for years.
Aviation Brewing Company, a full-service restaurant with plans to begin brewing this coming spring after license approvals, opened this month inside the 47 Washington St. commercial building.
Seth Simonian, the business founder, also owns The Flight Center, a craft beer lounge and restaurant with locations in Nashua and Manchester, and the Puddle Jumper food truck. He wanted to open Aviation Brewing Company inside the space after 7th Settlement left four years ago.

USA, ME: Brickyard Hollow Brewing Co. opening its sixth location in Stratton village in Eustis
|
Brickyard Hollow Brewing Co., the Yarmouth-based chain of craft brewpubs and gourmet pizza, is opening a sixth location Dec. 26 at Flagstaff Landing on Flagstaff Lake in Stratton village in Eustis, Yahoo News reported on December 22.
The company said the new location will focus on catering to the events held at Flagstaff Landing, including weddings and corporate retreats, in addition to being a fully functional Brickyard Hollow location with all the usual brews and pizza offerings Mainers have been enjoying for years.
The location is at 310 Route 27 and is in the heart of snowmobile country and close to Sugarloaf and Saddleback Mountain ski resorts.
Brickyard Hollow has locations in Yarmouth, Freeport, Portland, Ogunquit and Skowhegan.

USA, MI: Saugatuck Brewing Co. preparing to launch new Kalamazoo location in a few weeks
|
Saugatuck Brewing Co. is preparing to open the doors to its new location in Kalamazoo in a few weeks, MLive.com reported on December 21.
The brewing company, which is based out of Douglas and also has a location in Grand Rapids, closed down its previous Kalamazoo location in June to begin moving into the longtime home of Olde Peninsula Brewpub and Restaurant. Olde Peninsula closed in July 2021, citing the pandemic as a reason.
The move to the corner of East Michigan Avenue and Portage Street has a bit of a full-circle feel as the original brewmaster at Olde Peninsula, Greg “Gonzo” Haner, left Olde Peninsula to open his own brewery, Gonzo’s Bigdogg Brewery, at 140 S. Westnedge Ave.
Six years later, Saugatuck Brewing Co. announced it would acquire Gonzo’s, and moved into the Westnedge space, prompting the brewery to be renamed under the Saugatuck moniker. Now Saugatuck is headed to the space Gonzo originally brewed.
The move was initially announced in November 2021, about seven months before they closed the Westnedge location permanently. Plans had been to move into the new space sooner.

USA, OR: Lucky Labrador Brewing closing struggling North Portland pub
|
The Lucky Labrador, one of Portland’s oldest brewpubs, on Friday, December 23 will close its North Portland pub, one of its four locations, Oregon Live reported.
Gary Geist, who opened the longtime Portland favorite more than a quarter century ago with partner Alex Stiles, said he made the decision to close the location after the struggles delivered by the COVID era.
“We’ve tried to make a go of it in the North Portland location, and we just can’t make it work,” Geist told The Oregonian this week. “We tried to keep people employed there and would have probably closed a while ago, but it’s just not working.”
Geist said the decision was forced because of significant increases in COVID-19 cases and other illnesses throughout Oregon in the past two weeks combined with the normal reduction in winter sales.
The Lucky Lab, or the Lab, as it’s known, will continue to operate its three other locations, including its original brewpub on Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard, a pub in Southwest Portland’s Multnomah Village and its Quimby Beer Hall in Northwest Portland’s Slabtown.

Australia: Beer loses mantle as Australia’s favourite tipple for the first time

Australians’ love of beer once fed the idea that it was a country where the “amber nectar” ruled supreme, from Paul Hogan’s Foster’s adverts to the often-told story of cricketer David Boon downing 52 cans on a flight from Sydney to London, the Financial Times reported on December 22.
Yet 2022 was the year when beer lost its mantle as Australia’s favourite tipple for the first time, according to the brewing industry, as a younger, more abstemious and health-conscious generation turned its back on the increasingly pricey drink in the pub for a glass of wine at home.
Tim Cooper, chief executive of Coopers Brewery, the country’s largest independent beer manufacturer, cited industry data showing that beer’s share of the Australian alcohol market slipped to about 38 per cent this year, behind wine with more than 40 per cent.
This was a huge reversal from the 1970s, when beer accounted for 70 per cent of all alcoholic drinks consumed in Australia, with wine at just 10 per cent, he said. “The big change is that people are drinking at home and not in the pubs any more. UK: Guinness 0.0 to be available on-trade nationwide this month
|
Following its off-trade launch last year, Guinness 0.0 will be available in pubs, bars and restaurants all over the UK this month, the Morning Advertiser reported on December 23.
Brewed the same way as standard Guinness, the alcohol is then removed through a cold filtration process resulting in the same smooth, balanced flavours of chocolate and coffee alongside the dark colour and creamy head Guinness is known for at just 17 calories a serve.
Additionally, since its launch last year, the alcohol-free variant from the brewers at St James’ Gate has become the fastest growing non-alcoholic beer in the off trade, according to Nielsen Scantrack.
Guinness GB head Neil Shah said: “We know that the No and Low category presents a huge opportunity for the on trade, so we’re excited to launch Guinness 0.0 in pubs, bars and restaurants across GB.
“With some consumers opting to go alcohol-free at their favourite venues, we’re delighted that they can enjoy the unmistakable Guinness taste, just without the alcohol.”
Guinness 0.0 will be available in can format.
