Brewery news Canada, ON: Craft beer sales continue to surge in Ontario
The sheer variety on offer in today's beer-drinking landscape is giving Ontario's brew fans a lot more to think about when choosing a new favourite beer, CBC reported on December 28.

And while statistics show overall beer sales are declining in Canada, representatives of the industry say craft beer sales continue to surge in Ontario and there's still lots of room for growth.

Kevin Brewer, who works at a craft brewery in Thunder Bay, says when it comes to the brand loyalties of beer drinkers, over the years, things have changed.

"When we were younger, right, the Internet wasn't a thing," said Brewer, general manager at Thunder Bay's Sleeping Giant Brewing Company. "The only people that could afford commercials on television at the time were the macro companies.

"That's all you knew."

Brewer said that when he turned 19 and began drinking beer, the only real options were brews from "macro" breweries; that is, the large-scale companies like Anheuser-Busch InBev.

But today, Brewer said, people will come to Sleeping Giant for their first beer after they hit drinking age.

"Our demographic's 19 to unlimited," he said. "We have customers that are coming in for the first beer. We have people in our retail store that ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Planned beer and wine production facility receives $25 thousand grant to launch in Allegan
A planned beer and wine production facility and tasting room in downtown Allegan has received a $25,000 grant toward rehabilitating a vacant storefront, The Holland Sentinel reported on December 27.

Heronmark plans to open its business with seating and select food service at 132 Hubbard St. in 2023.

Katelyn Ramsay, co-owner of Heronmark, said the move is a significant step in the growth of the business and will allow Heronmark to create products using crops owners have grown on their personal farm.

“We are so delighted to open our business in downtown Allegan,” Ramsay said.

The grant is part of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Match on Main. In total, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced 35 communities across Michigan were awarded $807,673 in grants aimed to create vibrant, strong downtown spaces.

“Michigan’s small businesses and traditional downtowns are the heart of our communities, and with today’s Match on Main grants, we are helping small businesses in both peninsulas grow while further developing unique and inviting places that attract talent and new investment,” Whitmer wrote in a December release.

Ramsay and her husband, Ben, will use the funds to fill a vacant storefront in downtown Allegan that requires significant rehabilitation to both the interior and exterior of the ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Silversmith Brewing purchases all assets of Etobicoke’s Black Oak Brewing Co.
One of Niagara’s most iconic craft breweries is expanding its business, the Niagara Independent reported on December 27.

Virgil’s Silversmith Brewing, located in an 1890s church on Niagara Stone Road on route to Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake, recently purchased all assets of Etobicoke’s Black Oak Brewing Co.

The move will allow Silversmith to shift its focus to “small-batch innovations unique to the area known to most as Ontario’s wine country” and allow the brewery to seek out more “co-packing opportunities with other like-minded small beverage producers.”

Both brewing facilities will remain in operation.

“This move makes just makes sense as both Silversmith and Black Oak are stronger together,” said Josh Graham, president and CEO, Silversmith Brewing Company Limited. “Ken (Woods) is part of the fabric of craft brewing in Ontario and Black Oak has a long-respected history that aligns with our mission to brew authentic, quality, great tasting craft beer and as time progressed, the benefits of combining our strengths became apparent.”

“We are at a place that feels right and is the start of an exciting future for both Silversmith and Black Oak.”

Founded in 1999 by Ken Woods, Black Oak was one of Ontario’s first craft breweries and helped revolutionize the local ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Crooked Handle Brewing Co. opening the doors to its newest brewery on January 5
Crooked Handle Brewing Co. is opening the doors to its newest brewery at 123 N. Main St. in Piqua on Thursday, Jan. 5, according to owner Jason Moore, the Yahoo News reported on December 23.

Moore owns the brewery with his wife, Kristy, and longtime friends, Jeff and Emily Pedro.

The Piqua brewery is located in a 11,000-square-foot building that previously housed Piqua Granite and Marble Company.

"(Expansion) was always on our radar," Moore said. "We weren't actively looking. We were waiting for something to come up that was the right fit and that was Piqua as part of their park redevelopment."

Moore told Dayton.com they were approached by the city of Piqua regarding a vision of a brewpub anchoring the redevelopment of the Lock 9 Park on the corner of Water and Main Streets. He said the park, which is a DORA or "Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area," is expected to have a splash pad, amphitheater and much more.

He said he is excited to be part of something so much bigger.

"That's the reason we did it," Moore said. "We loved the vision from the beginning."

Crooked Handle Brewing Co. will feature a taproom seating over 150 people with a full-service bar and kitchen, in addition ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Brix Factory Brewing to join West Oakland’s brewing scene
West Oakland’s about to get a lot hoppier with the imminent arrival of Brix Factory Brewing, run by veterans of San Leandro’s popular craft-maker, Drake’s Brewing, the Silicon Valley reported on December 29.

Brix, whose name relates to the Brix measurement scale used in brewing (although “bricks” are also plentiful in this industrial stretch of the city), is scheduled to open in late spring or early summer 2023 at 2431 Peralta St. The partners in the venture are Michael Boals, Drake’s former brewery engineer, and ex-Drake’s brewmaster John Gillooly, a man who’s been described by beer lovers as a “legend” and “industry treasure.” Also involved are Gillooly’s wife Natasha, his daughter Kira and industry vet Eric Ortega.

“I first got put together with this site by the folks at Berkeley Yeast, who are a few suites up from our location,” Gillooly says. “We were already focused on West Oakland, which is just a great neighborhood (I live there) that needs more to do.”

That “more to do” includes drinking beer, a popular pastime hereabouts. “The Oakland beer scene is as good as any in the country,” Gillooly says. “Ghost Town (a few blocks away) just won ‘Best Brewery‘ for their size at the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KY: Trellis Brewing planning to open in Louisville by fall 2023
A vacant, graffiti-covered building in Smoketown, Louisville is going to get a new life: Trellis Brewing plans to transform the vacant space and open there by fall 2023, LEO Weekly reported on December 29.

Located at 827 Logan St., in the shadow of the Merchant’s Ice Tower and the former Schaefer-Mayer Brewery/Frank Fehr Brewery buildings, the space will include a roughly 4,000-square-foot taproom with adjacent brewery, a courtyard that will be overlooked from the taproom, a barrel-aging and blending space and more. The building is being leased from Bluegrass Development, which announced a $70 million Smoketown development project this week for the surrounding property. The brewery project has been in the planning for a year, and full construction permits are expected soon.

The taproom will have a capacity for about 100 people, while the 10-barrel brew system will be able to produce up to 1,000 barrels per year. But the focus of the brewery, according to co-founder Kyle Jahn, will be about community.

“We’re creating a welcoming space,” he told LEO Weekly. “We’ll have something for beer nerds, the beer curious and the non-beer drinkers.”

The taproom will have 22 taps, a bar, standing bar space and tables. While 20 taps will pour craft ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WY: Melvin Brewing Company sold to Roadhouse Brewing and Pub & Eatery
One of America’s fastest growing breweries, Melvin Brewing Company, has been sold to Roadhouse Brewing and Pub & Eatery, the New School Beer + Cider reported on December 27.

First started as a nano brewery in the back of a Thai restaurant and originally called Thai Me Up Brewing, Melvin became one of the most award-winning breweries at the Great American Beer Festival in the past decade, and parlayed that success to become one of the premiere brewers of bold IPA’s of the modern era. Melvin was set to blow up into an even bigger national brand until controversy surrounding inappropriate behavior from one of the owners surfaced and sent the brand into a tailspin. For some, they addressed those issues and corrected behavior, for others, it was too little too late. Melvin Brewing still has existed as a major brand, continued to win awards, and have a huge fan base. Their acquisition by fellow Wyoming beermaker Roadhouse Brewery Group means that the brand lives on and may even flourish.

Roadhouse Brewery Group, a regionally distributed B Corporation brewery with an auxiliary brewpub, Roadhouse Pub & Eatery, located in Jackson Hole, WY announced the purchase of Melvin Brewing Co. and its ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Great Wilderness Brewing Company to become Pulaski’s first brewery
Great Wilderness Brewing Company will be Pulaski’s first brewery, WDBJ reported on December 29.

It will take over an old building on First St. in the Town of Pulaski.

“We’re looking to build a massive 30-foot by 20-foot outdoor covered stage for live music, and a lot of outdoor live events,” said Scot Rockafellow, owner of Great Wilderness Brewing Company. “It’s a family-friendly, dog-friendly environment.”

He believes a brewery can help Pulaski with its revitalization efforts.

“When I was looking to find a location for this brewery, Pulaski resonated once I came down here and fell in love with the town; the ability to be a part of something and make a difference really meant something to me,” he said.

Pulaski Mayor Shannon Collins also believes in a brewery’s power to help revitalize the town.

“It brings more people,” he said. “People come for that, they go other places, they’ll hit here for the beers, the food, the sports, it will have the outdoor space.”

The goal is to open in the spring of 2024 but in order for that to happen, some work needs to be done on the building, which is being funded through state grants.

“It’s from 1910 and it needs a lot of help,” ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Auction of Fountain Square Brewing Co. assets scheduled for January
The owner of Fountain Square Brewing Co. says time is running out for his Indianapolis business to survive, the Indianapolis Business Journal reported on December 27.

Customers can buy craft beer at the brewery and tap room at 1301 Barth Ave. as 2022 comes to a close, and head brewer Beppe Cuello said he wants to buy Fountain Square Brewing Co. with his wife, Dama.

But owner Daryl Starr is moving on to focus on other business interests. Starr scheduled an online auction of the brewery’s assets, including fermenters, a canning line and walk-in coolers, for Jan. 17. Starr said a conventional sale of the business could happen before the auction date.

“I am hopeful that the brand can continue to operate under new ownership,” Starr wrote in an email to the IBJ. “However, the auction deadline is approaching quickly. If someone is going to buy it as a going concern they need to move fast.”

Cuello, who became the brewery’s interim general manager this fall, said he is working on a proposal that would keep the 11-year-old company selling its Workingman’s Pilsner and other varieties of beer.

“People have reached out to me, unsolicited, who want to help save the place,” Cuello said. “Among ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Katy's Battlehops Brewing unable to find a buyer
The last day of business for Katy's Battlehops Brewing was Sunday, November 20, and its owners now say they've not been able to find a buyer, the Covering Katy News reported on December 26.

"We haven't received an acceptable offer for Battlehops," said a recent Facebook post. "The brewery is permanently closed, and we will sell the equipment, furniture, and remaining games. Please email info@battlehopsbrewing.com for purchase information.

The post also said Battlehops will be in touch with those who have already expressed interest in purchasing equipment.

Battlehops Brewing was a "board game brewpub." The unique pub brewed small-batch beer, sold sodas, coffee, and served burgers, grilled cheese, hot dogs, and pretzels.

"The taproom is family-friendly with drinks and fun for all ages," the website said.

With more than 500 board games, ranging from old classics to new releases, customers could sip on a fresh brew and enjoy a board game with friends and family of all ages.

At 6801 Highway Boulevard in the City of Katy, Battlehops was owned and operated by JD and Jessica Merritt.

"Many factors contributed to our decision to close, but mostly, Battlehops is a huge commitment, and we need time for our family," said an earlier Facebook post.

"It's been ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Tribunal upholds penalty imposed on Carlsberg, United Breweries for beer cartelisation
The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has upheld a ₹873 crore penalty imposed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) on United Breweries Ltd, Carlsberg India and All India Breweries Association for cartelisation in beer making [Pawan Jagetia v CCI], the Bar and Bench reported on December 27.

Judicial Member Justice Rakesh Kumar and Technical Member Dr Ashok Kumar Mishra held that the appellant had, in their leniency application, already admitted to their involvement in the cartelisation.

“Once they have admitted their involvement in application filed under Section 46 read with Regulation 5, they were only entitled to question the imposition of penalty.”

Further, it was stated that in the case of cartelisation, the same could be inferred even from their conduct.

The issue arose when Crown Beers India and SABMiller India made an application alleging cartelisation against the appellants in relation to the production, marketing, distribution and sale of beer in India.

Thereafter, suo moto proceedings were initiated which culminated in the penalty being imposed.

The appellants before the NCLAT argued that the CCI’s order was liable to set aside since it found the appellants guilty only on the basis of their leniency application. It was contended that a leniency application was to be ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Total grain harvest to be reduced three times in 2023
Problems with logistics and power supply during the export of agricultural products from Ukraine during the war make the cultivation of grain crops unprofitable, therefore, in 2023, the total harvest in the country will be reduced three times compared to the record pre-war level, to 40 million tonnes from almost 120 million tonnes, Interfax-Ukraine reported on December 27.

Reducing the harvest to such low rates is already inevitable due to the current economic situation in the country, but by financing the agricultural sector, Ukraine can achieve a crop growth of up to 70 million tonnes by 2024, Rafael Goroyan, owner of the Prometey grain trading holding, said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

"Last year, 120 million tonnes of grain and oilseeds were harvested, this year they have already fallen to 60 million tonnes, and next year, according to my forecasts, there will be 40 million tonnes, that is, a drop of 300%! At the same time, the entire infrastructure of Ukraine is tailored for a harvest of 120 million tonnes and even more, this is what we have achieved in 30 years of independence. The entire infrastructure is designed for 120 million tonnes – cars, wagons, stations, ports, elevators – but there ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Great Northern crowned Australia’s favourite beer this year
Move over Carlton Dry, because Great Northern has officially been crowned Australia’s favourite beer this year, the LAD Bible reported on December 30.

According to data compiled by IRI Australia, the Queensland brew has been crowned number one on a top 10 list of best beers.

Great Northern just clipped Carlton Dry and XXXX Gold, which came in second and third place, respectively.

Coopers was placed fourth on the poll, while Victorian Bitter came in fifth place.

Corona, Tooheys, Asahi, Hahn and Pure Blonde also made it to the top 10 list.

However, many took to Facebook to weigh in on the poll, and reactions were divisive, to say the least.

One user wrote: “Looks like a list of varying degrees of potable urine. Onya Straya.”

Another said: “What about James Boag Or Cascade, lovely drop, the best!!!”

A third chimed in: “Glad to have contributed to Great Northern.”

However, some were quick to note that some brands of beer were foreign owned.

One user wrote: “Only one of those beer companies are Australian owned. How un Australian! Good ol Coopers. The only good beer on that list!!!!”

Another commented: “Only one Australian-owned brand there."

The truly Aussie beer included on the list was Coopers, which is still independent and Australian-owned.
