USA: American Malting Barley Association publishes list of recommended malting barley varieties
|
The American Malting Barley Association (AMBA) board of directors annually develops a list of recommended malting barley varieties for U.S. growers for the upcoming crop year. AMBA is a nonprofit trade association of 60+ malting, brewing, distilling and food companies that are end-users of U.S. malting barley.
The AMBA Recommended List is intended to provide U.S. growers with guidance as to what varieties the industry may be contracting or purchasing in the coming year. It is not intended as a list of approved or certified malting varieties for the use by brewers, distillers, food companies, or maltsters. There may be many suitable malting barley varieties grown domestically or internationally that are not on the list yet have quality characteristics desired by the industry.
Some varieties will be used in large quantities and many others are only utilized in niche markets, so producers are encouraged to contact their local elevator, grain handler or processor to gauge market demand for any variety grown in their region prior to seeding.
Additions to the 2023 list include CDC Fraser and KWS Donau.
CDC Fraser is a spring variety registered in Canada in 2016 and developed by Dr. Aaron Beattie at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan.

USA: Demand for non-alcoholic beer to continue growing in 2023 – Athletic Brewing Company CEO
|
The start of ‘Dry January,’ a month when many people avoid drinking alcohol, typically brings a heightened level of attention to non-alcoholic drinks. But the CEO of one of the leading non-alcoholic beer companies said that the demand for non-alcoholic brews is booming well beyond a single month, CNBC reported on December 30.
“This is the moment we’ve been waiting for in the category,” Bill Shufelt, Athletic Brewing CEO, said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box“ on December 28.
Long a sleepy category within the broader industry of beer, non-alcoholic beer has seen its growth skyrocket in recent years as bigger beer giants like AB InBev and Heineken launch new products as well as the emergence of independent brewers like Athletic Brewing. AB InBev, which owns brands like Budweiser, Corona, Michelob, and Modelo, had previously set a goal of making 20% of its beer volume non-alcoholic and low alcohol by 2025.
The lack of quality non-alcoholic beer options was the impetus for Shufelt, a former trader at Steve Cohen’s Point72 Asset Management, to start the Connecticut-based company in 2017, which solely focuses on non-alcoholic brewing.

USA, KY: Gallant Fox Brewing Company expands with second location in Mount Washington
|
One of Louisville’s newest breweries has expanded, opening a second location in Mount Washington. Gallant Fox Brewing Company’s expansion is monumental and is the first brewery to open in Bullitt County, the Spectrum News reported on December 30.
Co-owner Roger Huff says this expansion has been in the works for over a year and the community of Mount Washington has welcomed him and his team with open arms.
“You know, they lined up out the door when we first opened and they got beer to-go because you couldn’t sit inside because it was the pandemic, right? It’s been very similar out here. These people have embraced us so much,” Huff said.
Gallant Fox opened a little over two years ago in Louisville. Its second location officially opens to the public on Dec. 20.
With more space to brew, the plan is to ramp up production of their staple drinks.
“We’ll be able to do more of our core beers out of the big tanks and still utilizing the Louisville (location) for all the experimental stuff that we want to do in smaller batches,” Huff said.

USA, ME: Maine Port Brewing to become Searsport’s first brewery
|
Downtown Searsport is set to grow this spring with a new brewery, the Bangor Daily News reported on January 2.
Robert and Paula Martell are currently converting the Leach Block, one of Searsport’s historic buildings, into a brewery and tap room. The building, at 34 East Main St., was most recently home to Captain Tinkham’s Emporium until 2020.
The brewery’s arrival marks continued economic growth in downtown Searsport. The town has had an ongoing cluster of empty storefronts since 2009, shortly after the recession hit. The town, however, is finally recovering. Ten of Main Street’s 12 storefronts are set to be occupied in the coming months.
“It’s filling up steadily. I think our future looks very bright,” Town Manager James Gillway said.
Maine Port Brewing, which Gillway said would be the town’s first brewery, will offer six to eight beers, including IPAs, APAs and brown ales, brewed on site with a taproom where customers can drink them.
One brew is already locked down: an Irish blonde named “Patty Mahoney.” It will honor Robert Martell’s mother, with whom he planned to open the brewery until she passed away in 2020.

USA, NH: Hornburg Brewing Company about ready to launch in Hancock
|
Hornburg Brewing Company is just about ready to open its doors, or more accurately its “hobbit door,” – the owners are “The Lord of the Rings” fans – to the public, the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript reported on December 30.
A decade ago, Dean Gervin and his uncle Rick Gervin decided that opening a brewery together would be a neat idea. Four years ago, when Rick was deployed, his wife bought a property on Peterborough Street in Hancock. She studied as a vet tech and wanted to start a farm.
They now have heritage breed sheep, chickens and ducks at Gervinhaus Farm, and it was a spot where Rick and Dean could start their brewery. The address is 165 Peterborough Road.
“I’ve been home-brewing for 10 years,” Dean said, who relocated to the region from Maine to start the business. He just finished a six-month online course and they’ve developed some brews. They’ll have a variety of beer on tap, including a rotating menu of IPAs, a Belgian blonde, a session beer, a recreation of an ancient Norse recipe and their signature red ale, Eric the Red.

USA, MI: Desmond Depot Brewhouse pushes potential opening to mid-February
|
Beer enthusiasts will have to wait a few more weeks until they can enjoy a cold brew with a riverfront view near downtown Port Huron, The Times Herald reported on January 2.
Desmond Depot Brewhouse owner Steve Tranzow said last summer he was looking toward a mid-December opening if everything went according to plan at 210 Court St., near Vantage Point.
However, as his wait for state liquor license approvals moves into the new year, Tranzow is shifting gears.
“The time frame that I’m looking at, probably the soonest will be mid-February,” he said Thursday. “And there’s nothing that’s been a huge crisis in any of it. But there’s a lot of permitting that goes into something like this.”
Port Huron officials green-lit recommendations for new licenses and permits to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission earlier in 2022.
As of Friday, micro-brewer and on-premises tasting room licenses, as well as permits for Sunday sales, entertainment, outdoor service, and beer and wine tasting were still pending and under investigation, according to MLCC.

Canada, BC: Phillips Brewing and Malting Co. to change ownership
|
Phillips Brewing and Malting Co. is set to get a new owner after 21 years in business – or rather owners – as founder and current owner Matt Phillips transitions the company to a new business model, the Oak Bay News reported on January 5.
The company announced it is transitioning toward an employee-owned company, supported by an investment from B.C.-based Yellow Point Partners. Under the model, all full-time employees who have been with the company for at least three years will be able to purchase a share and become an owner.
“I founded the brewery 21 years ago, and it is a very different brewery from what it was when it began,” said Phillips. “Through those years, staff have taken on more and more responsibilities and roles here, and as they take on more of the responsibilities and I take on fewer, it just made sense that our ownership model be adjusted to give them the ups and downs of ownership to tie in to their other responsibilities.”
Phillips said the new ownership model aligns with everyone’s interests in the company, and from his perspective will give everyone involved a greater stake in the company, both literally and metaphorically.

Award-winning King Harbor Brewing Co. quietly closed down on New Year’s Eve after eight years in Redondo Beach, according to its Instagram page.
The craft brewery announced its “last days” in a Dec. 26 post, offering guests the chance to come in for a “proper goodbye.”
Craft Beer & Brewing magazine included King Harbor Choco-Latte, a Mexican-style mole stout, on its Best of 2022 list. The brewery also won a gold ribbon at the 2022 San Diego International Beer Competition for Flightless Pilot, an American-style Indian Pale Ale, and a silver ribbon for Topside Pilsner
Other products include a brown ale called the Swirly and a West Coast Double IPA honoring the late Vin Scully called Win For Vin.
The social media post gave few clues to the closing. “It has been a wild ride, but the time has come to close the doors for good,” it reads.
Tom Dunbabin and Will Daines opened the brewery in 2014. It had three locations: The brewery at 2907 182nd Street; a waterfront tasting room at 132 International Boardwalk; and Riviera Village, located at 1719 South Catalina Ave.
Mumford Brewing in Los Angeles’ Little Toyko district also shut down with an Instagram announcement on New Year’s weekend.

USA, VA: New District Brewing Co. set to close in late spring
|
Arlington’s only production brewery is set to close in late spring, but its owners remain hopeful about moving to a new location, ARLNow reported on January 5.
New District Brewing Co. in Green Valley is closing at the end of May, co-owner Mike Katrivanos confirmed to ARLnow. Memorial Day weekend is currently scheduled to be the brewery’s last days of operation at 2709 S. Oakland Street.
“Arlington’s first production brewery in one hundred years” was unable to renew its lease due to a rent increase and the landlord wanting them to lease the whole building, a large industrial space near Four Mile Run and the Shirlington Dog Park.
“It would have been more than two and a half times the current rent that we pay,” said Katrivanos. “Plus, an all-new build-out for the unrenovated portion of the building that we didn’t have when we initially moved in.”
Despite the brewery being profitable, those extra expenses are not tenable for New District, Katrivanos said.
“We are being priced out,” he said.

USA, IL: Smylie Brothers brewpub permanently shuts down in Evanston
|
Smylie Brothers, an eight-year-old brewpub in downtown Evanston, permanently shut down on New Year’s Eve, just four months after it closed its location in the Lakeview neighborhood on Chicago’s North Side, the Evanston RoundTable reported on January 3.
Smylie Brothers announced the abrupt closure on its Instagram and Facebook accounts on New Year’s Eve.
“Thank you to all our friends, family, coworkers and guests, your support over the past 8 years is truly appreciated. Sadly, as a result of the pandemic we are no longer able to operate the business and are now closed,” the statement said.
The Evanston operation, which opened in 2014, served up craft beer, Texas BBQ and wood-fired pizza and had a large patio as well as event space.
“It’s just really sad that they’re gone. I think Smylie’s will really be missed in the Evanston community,” said Danielle Zimmerman, an Evanstonian who was a regular at the restaurant. Zimmerman said the news of the restaurant shutting down caught her off guard as there were no visible indications the business was struggling, “My first reaction was just shock,” she said. USA, VA: Beltway Brewing Company in Sterling closing down its operations
|
Beltway Brewing Company in Sterling is closing down operations. The announcement was made on January 4 via social media.
“While I could regale you with Monday morning quarterbacking of all the things we should have or could have done differently over the past decade, the reality is that closing our doors is less the result of missed opportunities and more about the macroeconomic factors facing the brewing industry and the commercial real estate market here in Loudoun county,” wrote founder Sten Sellier.
He went on to add: “Unfortunately, recent hurdles were greater than our ability to overcome them.”
Beltway was established in 2011 and opened its Sterling location on Davis Drive roughly a decade ago. It’s core beers included the District of Champions Red Lager, The Circle IPA and Changing Lanes Double IPA.
According to Sellier, production at the brewery has already stopped, but they still have plenty of beer on hand and will be keeping their taproom open for much of January. They are hoping regulars will come out to reminisce and say goodbye.
They are also planning on holding a “Celebration of a Decade of Beltway Brewing” on Saturday, January 28.

USA, WI: Westallion Brewing Company to close its West Allis location
|
Westallion Brewing Company will close its West Allis location after this weekend, the company announced on January 5.
The West Allis brewery, located at 1825 S. 72nd St., opened in 2017.
“This will be the last weekend our West Allis location will be open,” the company said on Facebook. “We have loved the last six years as West Allis’ first brewery, and are sad to say goodbye, but are also excited about our future.’”
Westallion Brewing also has a location in Marinette.

Analysts at Barclays have upgraded their rating for Heineken NV to 'equal-weight' from 'underweight' as they now see the "near-term risks as balanced" for the Dutch brewing giant following a recent Capital Markets Day (CMD) update, ProactiveInvestors.co.uk reported on January 4.
In a note to clients, the Barclays analysts said: "We were positively surprised by the extent to which Heineken had made progress in its digital capabilities. At its recent CMD, Heineken confirmed that c.60% of its business is already digital, which is much higher than our previous expectations, and more importantly broadly in line with its key competitor AB InBev (57%)."
The analysts also said that since their downgrade to 'underweight' in March 2022, "four of the six downside catalysts have come to fruition".
They noted that: "As expected, Heineken withdrew its FY23E 17% EBIT margin target. We estimate its new +MSD-HSD% OPG guidance for FY23E is attainable, with company consensus already above the top end of this range (+8.6%)."

China: China’s top brewer diversifying into baijiu white liquor

China's top brewer is diversifying as beer sales shrink in China. It is homing in on the baijiu white liquor market, which it sees as having huge growth potential, the Nikkei Asia reported.
In October, China Resources Beer (Holdings), known for its Snow brand, announced that a unit of the company had agreed to buy a 55.19% stake in Chinese colorless liquor maker Guizhou Jinsha Jiaojiu Winery Industry to bolster its nonbeer assets. It will buy the stake for some 12.3 billion yuan ($1.75 billion) as it looks to become a diversified and dominant maker of alcoholic beverages.
According to a report on the details of the investment published recently by CR Beer, the leading brewer views Jinsha Jiaojiu Winery as a company with a "solid financial record in recent years." Jinsha Jiaojiu Winery has developed a "high-quality brand image" in the 70 plus years since its foundation, the document says. Jinsha Jiaojiu Winery had sales of 2 billion yuan in the first half of 2022, up 15% from a year earlier, posting a net profit of 670 million yuan, an increase of 12%, according to the report.

Denmark: Royal Unibrew announces acquisition of Danish microbrewery Nørrebro Bryghus

Drinks firm Royal Unibrew has expanded its craft beer portfolio with the acquisition of microbrewery Nørrebro Bryghus, the European Supermarket Magazine reported on January 5.
Founded in 2003 in Nørrebro, Nørrebro Bryghus is produced in Hedehusene, Denmark, at Baldersbrønde Bryggeri. Its beers are predominantly sold in Nørrebro, but the company said that the transaction will make it available to a wider audience.
"We have found a new owner who we believe can continue the Nørrebro Bryghus brand and the business we have built up over two decades," commented Martin Thomsen, managing director and co-owner of Nørrebro Bryghus. "We are proud of the chapter we have written."
The purchase price of the acquisition has not been revealed.
In a statement on its LinkedIn page, Royal Unibrew said that 'it is with great pleasure that today we can present our new member of the Royal Unibrew family: Nørrebro Bryghus'.
Commenting on the deal, director Kasper Ryttersgaard Jacobsen said, "Royal Unibrew has been given the opportunity to acquire and continue a strong, locally-anchored brand with a significant starting point in Copenhagen. Europe: Asahi unveils 0% alcohol beer across eight markets

The European arm of Japanese beverage giant Asahi Group has launched a zero percent alcohol version of its popular brand. Asahi Super Dry 0.0% begins its release across eight markets this month, premiering in the UK and Ireland to coincide with dry January, the Food Ingredients First reported on January 2.
Asahi creates the non-alcoholic version of its beer through “a process of dealcoholization” of the base recipe of Asahi Super Dry, creating according to the business “the world’s first super-dry alcohol-free beer.”
This release comes as many significant brewers attempt to tap the growing market for low-to-no alcohol options by releasing zero percent versions of primary brands.
AB InBev launched Corona Cero, a zero percent version of its leading beer, across Europe in June of 2022. After four years of development, Guinness released its non-alcoholic version, Guinness 0.0.
Heineken was among the first to release an alcohol-free version of its primary beer in 2017.
“The market for non-alcohol and low-alcohol beverages continues to expand globally, and the way consumers are drinking also continues to diversify,” says Asahi.

UAE: Dubai ends 30% tax on alcohol sales, makes liquor licenses free to obtain

Dubai ended its 30 percent tax on alcohol sales on December 31 and made its required liquor licenses free to obtain, in an apparent move to further boost tourism to the emirate, Al Arabiya reported.
The sudden New Year’s Day announcement, made by Dubai’s two state-linked alcohol retailers, came apparently from a government decree from its ruling Al Maktoum family.
However, government officials did not immediately acknowledge the decision and did not respond to questions from The Associated Press.
But it follows years of loosening regulations over liquor in the sheikhdom, which now sells alcohol during daylight hours in Ramadan and began providing home delivery during the lockdowns at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
Alcohol sales have long served as a major barometer of the economy of Dubai, a top travel destination in the UAE, home to the long-haul carrier Emirates.
During the recent World Cup in nearby Qatar, Dubai’s many bars drew commuting soccer fans.
However, a pint of beer easily can cost over $10 at a bar, with other drinks running even higher. It wasn’t immediately clear if this would cause a price drop at alcohol-serving establishments or if it only would affect those buying it from retailers.

Slovakia: Homebrewers to report their hobby to customs as from this year

Beer lovers who brew the drink for their own consumption in Slovakia have a new obligation starting this year: reporting this hobby of theirs to the nearest customs office, The Slovak Spectator reported on January 5.
They have to submit required information to the office, in written form or electronically, by January 25. There is no prescribed form that a beer producer should send to the office, but the letter should include their name, permanent address, the location the beer is brewed, and the expected annual production, the Financial Administration said.
By law, the obligation concerns any natural person who does not produce more than 10 hl of beer per year, produces it exclusively for their own consumption or for close persons. In addition, the beer must not be sold or otherwise put on the market.
If they fail to deliver the letter to the customs office, they will be subject to a penalty, ranging from €30 to €3,000.
The same obligation concerns those who will only start brewing beer this year. In their case, they should report this fact within a month.
