USA: Montana drinks most beer among America’s states, study says
|
It is no secret that America loves its beer, but this list of the 10 states that drink the most beer certainly throws up a few curveballs, The Drinks Business reported on January 6.
All of the data in this list comes courtesy of home-brew and beer resource Learning to Homebrew. The data was compiled by founder and CEO Joshua Bartlett, who examined criteria including population density, gallons of beer consumed per capita, barrel production and revenue, and number of breweries.
Here are the top 10 states that drink the most beer in America:
Montana – perhaps a surprising first place, but Montana consumes 40.8 units of beer consumed per capita and has 92 active breweries.
New Hampshire – this relatively small state packs a punch, consuming 39.8 units of beer per capita and boasting 91 breweries.
North Dakota – a smaller state still, but North Dakota drinks 38.2 units of beer per capita.
South Dakota – though South Dakota has a population of less than one million and only 22 breweries, it drinks 38.2 units of beer per capita.
Maine – Maine has an impressive 133 active breweries and consumes 33.8 units of beer per capita.

USA, FL: Golden Isles Brewing Co. to launch in St. Pete’s Magnolia Heights neighborhood later this spring
|
St. Pete’s Magnolia Heights neighborhood is set to get its first craft brewery later this spring. Golden Isles Brewing Co. has begun buildout of its family (and dog) friendly brewery at 3000 Dr. MLK Jr St N, converting the one-time gas station into a bright and open space for locals to gather, I Love the Burg reported on January 6.
Golden Isles is aiming for a May 1 grand opening, the wedding anniversary of the couple behind the new spot. Angie and Jonathan (and their two kids and two dogs) have been renovating, painting, and preparing the space to be the home for their vision of a neighborhood brewery full of beer, food and “a lot of fun and love.”
The indoor/outdoor space will of course offer plenty of “damn good beer,” and owners say to expect a New York-style hot dog cart, “Dad’s wet lemon pepper wings,” and rotating food trucks. They will also serve non-alcoholic options, have Prosecco and wine on tap, and fill much of the space with old school arcade games like Miss Pac-Man, Golden Tee and more.

USA, OH: Homestead Beer Company set to open in Lancaster around the end of summer
|
A new brewery is set to open on the Barrel & Boar BBQ Factory property at 1217 S. Broad St. in Lancaster, the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette reported on January 6.
The Homestead Beer Company of Heath's Restless Meadow Sour House will produce a sour brew that owner Adam Rhodes will distribute through the central Ohio Barrel and Boar locations of Canal Winchester, Delaware, Gahanna, Heath, Marysville, Newark, Westerville and here.
Restless Meadow will be located in the barn behind the Barrel & Boar BBQ Factory and across from Utica Park.
“Our initial sours will be borrowing heavily from Homestead flagships," Rhodes said. "Tenpenny Amber Ale will be a major provider of the initial beer going into our barrels. Moving forward, we will be borrowing heavily from our experience with the Pilot Series to produce unique, imaginative sour beers.”
He said the first sour batches should be out around the end of summer because of the long process it takes to make a sour beer, sometimes up to a year. The company also has to go through the state licensing process, which Rhodes said can take four to 12 weeks or so before it can even start brewing here.

USA, MI: Local farmers to open beer and wine production facility, tasting room in downtown Allegan
|
A vacant storefront in downtown Allegan could use a little work and its future tenants are prepared to do just that — and a grant from the state will make their goal a little more obtainable. The nascent beer and wine maker Heronmark has been awarded a $25,000 Match on Main grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to help with the vacant building’s interior and exterior renovations, the Second Wave Media reported on January 7.
Ben and Katelyn Ramsay own and operate a farm outside of town, where they’ve been growing their own hops and grapes for beer and wine production. Their vision, now bolstered by the Match on Main grant, includes a beer and wine production facility, and tasting room with seating and select food service, in downtown Allegan. The interior and exterior at 132 Hubbard St. will receive significant renovations and it’s expected that the business will open to the public later in 2023.

USA, VA: Atlas Brew Works planning its third location in Alexandria
|
Atlas Brew Works will open a third location, slated for a late-2023 opening, in the new Carlyle Crossing mixed-use development in Alexandria, the company announced Friday. The brewery and tap room, located within walking distance of the King Street and Eisenhower Avenue Metro stations, will also offer food from award-winning Andy’s Pizza, the Alexandria Living Magazine reported on January 6.
“Our team is super excited to bring an Atlas brewpub to Alexandria,” said Justin Cox, Atlas Brew Works founder and CEO. “While our beer has been available in Virginia for a while, having a brick-and-mortar brewery in the state will allow us to continue to grow our relationship with our customers while brewing new and exciting recipes.”
The 6,000 square-foot space will include the brewery with a production capacity of 2,000 barrels, led by director of Brewing Operations Daniel Vilarrubi. The venue will include an adjoining tap room with 16 draft lines and a kitchen facility and around 1,500 square feet of outdoor patio space. Keeping with its reputation and mission of sustainable stewardship, Atlas Brew Works plans to pursue sustainable energy sources at its third location.

USA: Founders Brewing Co. and Avery Brewing Co. merge with their parent to become Mahou USA
|
Founders Brewing Co. and Colorado-based Avery Brewing Co. have merged with Mahou — the breweries’ parent company — to become Mahou USA, FOX 17 reported on January 10.
The merge will officially happen Thursday, Jan. 12. It will be the culmination of a business transition that started in 2014.
“Founders and Avery have been working together cohesively for the past two years, and we have consistently found strength within this partnership of brands,” says Mahou CEO Elton Andres Knight. "Combining Founders and Avery with Mahou Imports into Mahou USA will enable us to compete on another level within the marketplace, which will bring a refreshing change as we move through 2023 and beyond.”
Mahou adds the transition will allow its offerings to remain competitive in the craft beer industry, in addition to bringing more products once unavailable throughout much of the U.S.

USA, VA: Beltway Brewing Company set to close in Sterling
|
The Beltway Brewing Company has created its final batch of beer, the owner announced on social media. The facility will continue operating until they run out of beer, the Patch reported on January 6.
"It’s time to say goodbye," founder Sten Sellier wrote on Facebook. "When you decide to start a brewery, you always know that one day you’ll brew your last batch, but you never expect it to be the one you just brewed."
Sellier did not provide a specific reason for the closure. However, he alluded to "macroeconomic factors facing the brewing industry and the commercial real estate market here in Loudoun County."
Sellier left an engineering career in California in 2011 to begin brewing full-time. A D.C. native, he opened the Beltway Brewing Company to help other start-up brewers get their start, according to the brand's website.
"I am incredibly proud and thankful to my team for their iron-willed fortitude and dedication in facing the many challenges all businesses faced over the past few years," Sellier wrote on Facebook. "Unfortunately, recent hurdles were greater than our ability to overcome them."

USA, IL: Rock Bottom Brewery closes for good after more than 20 years in business
|
After more than 20 years in downtown Chicago, Rock Bottom Brewery suddenly closed on December 8 without explanation, the Block Club Chicago reported.
A sign on the door of the craft brewery and restaurant at 1 W. Grand Ave. confirmed it was closed. “Thank you for the many great years of support we will closing this Rock Bottom location 1/8/2023,” it read.
Reached by phone, general manager Jon Jones said he could not say why the restaurant closed.
“We just decided to close,” Jones said.
Jones referred Block Club to the restaurant’s hospitality group SPB Hospitality for more information. The hospitality group could not immediately be reached for comment.
Before craft breweries were more prevalent, tourists and locals alike flocked to Rock Bottom for its sprawling beer list, which featured craft brews that couldn’t be found elsewhere.
Goose Island had already opened a brewpub by then, but big Chicago names like Half Acre and Revolution were still years away.

Ireland: Guinness to raise prices in February in a new blow to struggling publicans
|
Guinness will raise prices of Ireland’s favorite brew next month by 12 euro cents per pint, a new blow to struggling publicans and prompting calls for the company to reconsider its decision, Bloomberg reported on January 10.
London-based parent company Diageo Plc, which reported profit of £3.34 billion ($4.1 billion) in its latest fiscal year, said it could no longer afford to absorb rising costs, which are increasing for brewers worldwide.
Pubs are already grappling with a soaring cost of energy and still recovering from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on their businesses. The move also follows a similar 17 euro-cent increase announced by Heineken NV on its products in December.
Vintners Federation of Ireland Chief Executive Paul Clancy said publicans were “getting hammered from every angle” and described Diageo’s move as a further difficulty for his members.
“We’re heading into the quietest few months of the year for the trade, so the increase in the price of a pint couldn’t come at a worse time. Due to the unprecedented cost of doing business publicans will have to pass on this price increase to their customers, which is something they are very unhappy about,” he said.

Democratic Republic of Congo: Brasimba brewery’s output more than triples between 2013 and 2021

Bottles of beer zip along a conveyor belt in a Brasimba factory which has weathered two deadly Ebola outbreaks and waves of fighting linked to rebel militias active in the nearby forests, Reuters reported on January 11.
After an initial investment of 125 million euros ($134 million), beer output at the plant in the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo city of Beni more than tripled to 600,000 hectolitres between 2013 and 2021.
Brasimba, which has been controlled by France's Castel Group since 1995, further expanded production in Beni last year with a second filling line. Along with warehouse expansion, this should help Brasimba manage supply disruptions as the impoverished province grapples with a major offensive by the M23 rebel group.
"The Beni plant has become the hope of this battered region, many people have embraced the project and find it extremely positive to see an international group investing in the region," said Brasimba sales manager Thomas Wybauw.
Workers in high visibility vests load crates onto lorries that will take up to a month to reach their destinations, bumping slowly along the rutted or muddy roads, sometimes having to navigate rebel checkpoints.

New Zealand: Brewers concerned by New Zealand’s only carbon dioxide plant shutdown
|
The liquid carbon dioxide plant at Kāpuni in Taranaki has been temporarily shut down because of safety concerns, and no reopening date has been announced, 1News reported on January 11.
It had been New Zealand's only domestic producer of food-grade CO2 since the Marsden Point refinery was decommissioned last year.
CO2 is used to carbonate drinks and is also used in brewery equipment.
Brewers Association executive director Dylan Firth said brewers were quite concerned.
Brewers may have to import carbon at a higher price or invest in gas-capturing technology, Firth said.
He was hopeful production of the gas could catch up if the facility was not closed for long.
