Inflation may finally be hitting a staple long been considered recession-proof: beer, USA TODAY reported on January 10.
During the last 13 weeks of 2022, beer prices at retail (not including bars and restaurants) rose a "much higher than normal" average of 7%, according to Bump Williams Consulting of Shelton, Connecticut, which services the alcoholic beverage industry, and uses Nielsen data. Some beers including those such as Bud Light, Miller Lite, Yuengling Lager and Coors Light saw prices rise even higher – by 10% – the data suggests.
During that time period, there was also a decline in volume of beer sold. Domestic super-premium beers such as Michelob Ultra saw sales rise 0.8% throughout the year, but fell off 2.3% in the four weeks leading up to Christmas, according to Bump Williams Consulting. Similarly, sales of imported beers such as Corona and Heineken rose 4.2% in 2022, but dipped 0.5% in December.
That suggests beer shoppers may have opted to buy less beer – a six-pack or 12-pack instead of something larger – or maybe bought a cheaper brand.

USA, MI: New Holland Brewing Co. planning an all-new brewpub, micro-brewhouse and a micro-distillery in Battle Creek
|
One of Michigan’s oldest craft brewers is expanding again – this time to Battle Creek, where New Holland Brewing Co. plans a triple whammy: an all-new brewpub, micro-brewhouse and a micro-distillery, the Second Wave Media reported on January 12.
Expected to open in late March, the new location not only expands New Holland Brewing Co.’s retail footprint in Michigan, but will also help spur economic development in downtown Battle Creek.
“What we see in Battle Creek is a community investing millions of dollars into the infrastructure,” says Brett VanderKamp, CEO of New Holland Brewing Co. “The city has a tremendous group of champions through non-profit groups and long-standing businesses. They just need a little help bringing a sense of place. There are some good starts, but we need to add some variety and alternative spaces where people can get together, socialize and talk to one another.”
It’s not New Holland’s first foray into a challenging area. USA, MI: Apoptosis Brewing Company set to open in Kalamazoo on January 14

A new brewery and tasting room is set to open on South Westnedge Avenue in Kalamazoo this weekend, MLive.com reported on January 11.
Owned and operated by longtime friends Andrew Birr and Dustin Johnson, Apoptosis Brewing Company will open at 3811 S. Westnedge Ave., on Saturday, Jan. 14, Johnson told the Kalamazoo Gazette/MLive.
Birr will serve as head brewer with Johnson running the front of house and lending a hand with brewing. Both have been homebrewing for over 10 years, Johnson said.
The brewery, located at the former site of a revamped Big Apple Bagels location, plans to serve small batch, hand-crafted beers, seltzers and ciders. They will have nine selections on tap, including the Golgi Apparatus New England Style IPA, named after a song by Phish, a band Johnson is a fan of.
Other beers on tap to start will include the Spiral Nebulae Milk Stout, Blood Orange Revolution Blonde Ale, Absolute Zero Pre-Prohibition Lager and Foxy Cream Ale made with concord grapes from Corey Lake Orchards in Three Rivers.
There will also be a yet-to-be-named hazy pale ale, lemon seltzer, pineapple seltzer and a raspberry wheat ale.
Johnson and Birr will not serve food to start, but plan to eventually offer paninis and chips.

USA, MI: Six Spoke Brewery coming to Detroit soon
|
Two James Distillery and Cork & Gabel in Corktown will soon welcome new neighbor when a section of the building that currently houses both businesses is transformed into a craft brewery in the coming months, the Eater Detroit reported on January 11.
The spot will be called Six Spoke Brewery, a nod to the “spokes” that make up the city’s major roadways, says founder Jordan Mifsud — whose father Joe Mifsud owns the building on the 2400 block of Michigan Avenue. Mifsud tells Eater that he’s is having brewing equipment installed in the space now and that he hopes to be able to open this summer.
Mifsud says that he became inspired to launch the effort after seeing the success of Clark & Gabel, a sit-down restaurant and bar that his dad opened in 2018. Being within a block or so of the Michigan Central Train Station — which is currently in the final months of redevelopment by Ford Motor Company subsidiary Michigan Central Innovation District LLC — and the makeover of Roosevelt Park, the area is expected to draw even more workers, residents, and visitors to the city’s oldest neighborhood.

USA, MO: Alpha Brewing Co. slated to open a distillery in St. Louis
|
Alpha Brewing Co. is slated to open a distillery at 5232 Delmar Blvd. in St. Louis in September 2023, as reported by St. Louis Magazine. Alpha Brewing Co. Distillery will be part of the Delmar Maker District, a burgeoning development on Delmar Boulevard between Union and Kingshighway boulevards.
The development, which is a horseshoe-shaped building with an inner courtyard, will feature retail, office and event space, a restaurant, plus an 8,000-square-foot patio and beer garden shared by all tenants.
Alpha Brewing owner and head brewer Derrick Langeneckert said opening a distillery is the next logical step for him. The distillery will offer a brown spirit line with bourbon and rye whiskey, as well as a line of vodka called Squoosh that will comes in six flavors: cranberry, peach, grapefruit, lemon, lime and blood orange.
“We are taking our experience in sour beers and translating that into spirits. There are not too many local vodka producers and nothing to my knowledge that uses real fruit. That is where Squoosh will stand out,” said Langeneckert. UK: Tight supply of malting barley predicted in Scotland if growers reduce planting area

Demand for Scottish malting barley could go through the roof this year if farmers stand by their intentions to reduce the spring barley area by 11,000 ha, The Courier reported on January 13.
Leading farm consultant Julian Bell told farmers at an AHDB Agronomy roadshow near Perth that if an average yield of 6.5t/ha was assumed, the estimated lower acreage would result in 140,000 tonnes less spring barley being available to maltsters – at the very time when malting capacity has increased by 150,000 tonnes.
“In 2022 around a million tonnes of malting barley was needed and 1.1m tonnes was produced, so close to 89% of what was available had to be turned into malting barley,” he said.
“That was reasonably tight, which was reflected in a reasonably good premium.
“If you compute the smaller area – and unless there are exceptionally good yields – you’re moving up to in theory 95% of all spring barley needing to make malting (quality), and that seems quite a long shot.
“In that situation more barley might need to be imported, so there’s a huge amount riding on what actually goes in, what the weather is as well as yield and quality.”

Beijing has opened the door for bilateral talks to begin resolving trade disputes that have crippled A$20 billion of Australian exports, if the Albanese government abandons its World Trade Organisation challenges, China’s top diplomat in Australia has revealed.
Ambassador Xiao Qian said Australian and Chinese trade negotiators in Geneva had begun discussing the possibility of Australia dropping its WTO challenge to punitive tariffs on barley and wine, saying such a move would be a “good idea”, AFR reported on January 10.
“Bilateral is much easier to find a solution instead of going through the multilateral forum,” he said during a 90-minute press conference in Canberra on Tuesday.
“I want to emphasise there are [trade] concerns from both sides,” a reference to Australia’s anti-dumping tariffs on steel goods and curbs on Chinese foreign investment.
Trade Minister Don Farrell has repeatedly indicated his willingness to hold bilateral talks as an “off-ramp” to resolve what he has described as trade “blockages”.
Despite the recent easing of tensions between Canberra and Beijing, Mr Xiao said further goodwill was needed to end trade disputes, although he indicated Chinese authorities would notify Chinese companies and consumers of improved relations.

UK: Workers at Diageo’s Leven plant to launch series of strikes
|
Workers at Diageo’s Leven plant in Scotland will launch a series of strikes over a dispute about pay starting Saturday, January 14, Bloomberg reported.
The dispute has rumbled on for years but the strike comes as workers across different industries in Britain and Europe are demanding higher pay, amid a cost-of-living squeeze that has pushed inflation to 40-year highs.
The strike will begin Saturday for 48 hours with a series of strike days scheduled up to April 3, trade union Unite said.
The union said Johnnie Walker maker Diageo introduced a lower rate of pay for new starters without consultation with the unions. Grievance over the issue was first raised in 2019.
The trade union estimates some of its engineering members are set to lose around 6% of their pay when moved to the lower rate of pay. The strike will reduce the engineering support for the bottling plant and Unite said it would not be safe to run the plant without the support its members provide.
Diageo denied that it was introducing a lower rate of pay for new joiners and said the dispute is with ten weekend shift engineers in relation to the number of night shifts required and associated shift premiums.
