USA, WA: Backwoods Brewing to begin construction of new brewpub in Ridgefield
|
Backwoods Brewing, which the Waters family founded in the Columbia River Gorge town of Carson in 2012, has come out of the pandemic hitting its stride, the Oregon Live reported on January 16.
For starters, it will soon begin construction on a third location, a brewpub in Ridgefield. Co-owner Tom Waters said the new location will be just west of Interstate 5, near where a new Costco is planned, as well. It will be on nearly an acre and include ground and mezzanine dining spaces plus an outdoors drinking and dining area.
The food menu will be a bit of a mash-up of the two current Backwoods locations — the pizza from the Carson pub and the burgers, wraps and salads from the Pearl District in Portland. The tentatively named Backwoods Brew Lab will also include a pilot brewhouse — something the brewery has been in need of to develop recipes and small-batch brews it can’t do now in at its big production brewery in Stevenson, Washington.
Tom Waters and his brother, fellow co-owner Chris Waters, said they hope the brewery’s third location will be open by the end of next year, but mid-2024 is probably more realistic. The brothers’ founded the brewery

USA, MN: Clyde Brewing launches in Duluth
|
Duluth’s Clyde Iron Works is celebrating a big expansion into the brewing business, Fox21Online.com reported on January 16.
Clyde Brewing is located in the Clyde building in Lincoln Park. Monday, January 16, the kick-off had taste testings of their 6 new brews, plus a root beer for those not wanting alcohol.
All of the traditional style beers are dedicated to the manufacturing history of Clyde with names like “Steam Skidder Stout” and Whirley Wheat.”
The brewery has been in the works since 2020. The head brewer is Dale Kleinschmidt, who was the head brewer of Lake Superior Brewing for nearly 25 years.
“I’ve always told people you know give it a taste. And if you don’t like it that’s okay. You know not everybody is gonna like everything,” said Kleinschmidt. “But we encourage people to come down give em a taste, give em a fair shot and you’ll probably find something that you like.”
The owners of Clyde Iron Works are also working on a future hotel called “Clyde Hotel.” They hope to break ground on the existing property this spring, and if all goes well a second hotel will follow.

USA, OH: Avon Brewing Co. to break ground on new location in February
|
After nearly seven years at its current location, Avon Brewing Co., 37040 Detroit Road in Avon, is moving to a new site to accommodate its growing number of customers, the Morning Journal 15.
Avon Brewing Co will break ground in February and hopes to open by August.
The new location, formerly Gerber’s Garden Center at 36383 Detroit Road, not only is larger, but affords the staff at Avon Brewing Co. more opportunities.
Along with a larger facility, the location boasts an outdoor beer garden and a party center for all events.
“We’ve outgrown our current location,” said Mathias Hauck, co-founder of the Avon Brewing Co. “It’s about 5,000 square feet, and we have about 26 parking spots of our own.
“We’re moving to a 15,000-square-foot facility with 200 parking spots. We’ll have a 1,000-square-foot party room.”
The company purchased the land in late 2021 and submitted the paperwork to the city in May.
“That takes months to review and get things through city council,” Hauck said. “Once those design and engineering concepts are in, we can start building.”
Hauck said he and his team have worked to get the brewhouse into the new facility as quickly as possible.
Avon Brewing Co. also has breweries in Medina and Madison.

USA, CO: Rocky Mountain Brewery to shut down its taps for good
|
After almost 15 years dispensing creative craft suds from an industrial-style bunker north of Peterson Space Force Base — and racking up a slew of awards in the process — Rocky Mountain Brewery has announced it will be shutting down the taps for good, The Gazette reported on January 17.
A statement from the brewery posted on January 13 on Facebook said the brewery property, a 10,500-square-foot operating facility on two acres on Colorado Springs’ eastern fringe, had been listed for sale last summer. Expectations then were that RMB would continue pouring until “at least spring 2023.”
The universe, however, "had different plans.”
In late December, RMB received an offer “unable to be turned down.” The veteran owned and operated brewery will close Feb. 4.
According to the statement from the brewery, founded in 2008 by Duane Lujan, the new owners don’t plan to continue the brewing tradition at 625 Paonia St.
“To answer everyone’s question, there is not another brewery coming into the RMB tap room space. We do not know the full plans of the new building owners or who they will bring in to fill the spaces.”

South Africa: AB InBev objecting to proposed Heineken takeover of Distell
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev, the parent company of South African Breweries (SAB), is objecting to a proposed takeover by Dutch giant Heineken of Distell, News24 reported on January 18.
It wants Distell to sell its cider brands like Hunter's or Savanna as part of the deal.
Heineken has offered to sell its cider brand Strongbow to address concerns about competition. Strongbow competes against Distell's Hunter's Dry and Savanna brands, and the Competition Commission found the merged entity will have significant market share, which will "substantially" lessen competition in the cider and flavoured alcoholic beverages markets.
The commission has accepted Heineken's proposal to sell Strongbow and has recommended that the takeover be approved. The Department of Trade Industry and Competition (DTIC) also supports the transaction.
On Wednesday, hearings at the Competition Tribunal into the deal started, and SAB said it plans to oppose the deal. It will give evidence on Thursday.
A spokesperson for SAB said the merger will result in the removal of an effective competitor. The group also has questions about the effectiveness of the sale of Strongbow, and wants Distell to sell one of its other cider brands instead.

Myanmar: ThaiBev reports fire incident at Yangon production facility
|
ThaiBev, on January 15, reported a fire incident that took place at Grand Royal Group International’s production facility in Yangon, Myanmar.
The group has an indirect 75% stake in Grand Royal Group.
According to ThaiBev, the fire occurred in the afternoon on January 13 and it was “successfully put out” in the early hours of Jan 14. No lives were lost.
The fire happened in the facility’s raw material storage area and was confined to the area. The fire is believed to be an accident although it has been subject to an investigation and assessment.
“Grand Royal Group’s management team is already taking immediate steps to procure replacements of the relevant raw materials in preparation to resume its blending and bottling operations in Yangon within February 2023,” says ThaiBev in its statement.
“The operations in the Mandalay facility remain unaffected. Grand Royal Group does not anticipate any shortage of finished products in the Myanmar market, as Grand Royal Group and its distributors hold sufficient inventory,” it adds.
The incident is not expected to affect ThaiBev materially for the FY2023.
Shares in ThaiBev closed 1 cent lower or 1.4% down at 70.5 cents on January 13.
