The Czech Republic: Quality and price of Czech beer threatened by climate change
|
Czechs are the world’s most prolific beer drinkers and their various brews are highly sought after in markets across the globe. But a joint study conducted by universities in the UK, US and China suggests that the production of “liquid bread”, as the Czechs call their favourite drink, may in fact be under threat, Radio Prague reported on January 19.
At the centre of the problem lie the effects of climate change on the growing of barley, beer’s key ingredient, says Dabo Guan, a climate change economist at University College London who is one of the lead researchers involved in the study.
"Barley only grows in relatively cold places: Eastern European countries, Canada and Russia are the main production areas. So once the climate models tell us where there is a possibility of heat stress in the future, we can see that most of the Eastern European countries would suffer large losses in barley production."
The vulnerability of the crop is also of great concern to brewing companies. For them, climate change is a major economic risk, says Ivan Tučník, who is in charge of sustainability at Czechia’s leading beer brand Pilsner Urquell.

Tunisia: SFBT reports rise in beer sales in 2022
|
Tunisia’s leading beer maker La Société de fabrication des boissons de Tunisie (SFBT) has reported its performance in 2022. The company reached a total turnover of 813 million dinars against 730.5 million in 2021, or an increase of 11%.
Local sales of soft drinks stood at 178.6 million dinars (+18%) at the end of December, while exports reached 28.5 million (-15.7%).
As for local sales of beer, they amounted to 553 million dinars, against 500.5 million in 2021, up about 10.5%. In volume, SFBT sold 185.6 million litres of beer last year, against 176 million litres in 2021.
In addition, SFBT invested a total of 41.2 million dinars, against 15.6 million in 2021. These investments are composed mainly of purchases of equipment for 25 million dinars and packaging for 11.8 million dinars.

New alcohol guidelines recommending that Canadians limit themselves to just two drinks a week – and ideally cut alcohol altogether – have prompted intense debate over risk versus enjoyment in a country where the vast majority of adults regularly consume alcohol, The Guardian reported on January 18.
The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) this week called for a substantial reduction in consumption, warning that seemingly moderate drinking poses a number of serious health risks, including cancer, heart disease and stroke.
The new guidelines, funded by Health Canada, represent a dramatic shift from previous recommendations issued in 2011, when Canadians were told that low-risk consumption meant no more than 10 drinks a week for women and 15 drinks a week for men.
“We wanted to simply to present the evidence to the Canadian public, so they could reflect on their drinking and make informed decisions,” said Peter Butt, a professor of family medicine at the University of Saskatchewan and a member of the panel that drafted the guidelines. “It’s fundamentally based on the right to know.”

South Korea: Beer prices expected to rise again due to liquor tax increase in April
|
The price of beer is expected to rise again in South Korea due to an increase in liquor tax, adding pressure on consumers’ spending and the country’s inflation, the Pulse News Korea reported on January 19.
Starting from April 1, liquor tax on beer and rice wine will rise by 3.57 percent, or 30.5 won ($0.02) per litre, from last year, according to a revised enforcement ordinance for the Individual Consumption Tax Act and the Liquor Tax Act announced by the Ministry of Economy and Finance on Wednesday.
South Korea’s major breweries like HiteJinro Co., Oriental Brewery Co. and Lotte Chilsung Beverage Co. have already raised their beer prices by more than 7 percent to respond to inflation last year.
The liquor tax rate on beer and rice wine has been adjusted for the inflation rate of the previous year since 2020, when the government made a shift from value-based to volume-based taxing.

USA: Cannabis and CPG firm Tilray Brands to expand further into beer and spirits

Tilray Brands wants to expand further into beer and spirits as the cannabis and CPG firm is concerned it will not see cannabis legalisation in the US market in the “near future”.
Irwin Simon, the CEO of the New York-based pharmaceutical, cannabis and beverage producer, said the company now has a “major focus” on acquisitions in order to diversify its portfolio “because we don’t know when legalisation is going to happen in the US”.
Tilray Brands sees the spirit and beer sectors as areas that have “great opportunities” and where its previous acquisitions have shown “great margins”, Simon added.
In November, the group acquired New York-based Montauk Brewing Company. Simon said Montauk’s “success has been driven by its loved product portfolio, premium price point and over 4,700 points of distribution”, adding: “We’d love to find some more Breckenridges or some more Montauk and SweetWater.”
Simon continued: “We think that from an acquisition standpoint, the whole wellness area is an area we’re going to focus on and look at acquisitions there. And, upon legalisation, there will be foods that will be infused with hemp, there’ll be foods that will be infused with THC.”

USA, TX: Molson Coors moving its Fort Worth brewery to 100% renewable electricity
|
The Molson Coors Beverage Company is moving its Fort Worth brewery to wind-powered, 100% renewable electricity by the end of January, a move that gets it closer to meeting its 2025 sustainability goals – and ultimately its target of net-zero emissions by 2050, American Craft Beer reported.
To do so, company has signed a long-term agreement with EDF Energy Services to receive approximately 72,000 megawatts of power generated by the King Creek Wind Farm in north-central Texas, (plenty of wind there) which went online late last year.
Fort Worth becomes Molson Coors’ first brewery in North America to be powered by 100% renewable electricity. The company’s UK operations switched to 100% wind power in 2021.
“We work hard to make sure our brewery is efficient and a good steward of the environment,” Jim Crawford, the brewery’s general manager told Beer & Beyond. This project helps us achieve both. We’re seeing more and more wind-energy projects across Texas, and it’s exciting that our brewery is supplied by one of them.”
