Brewery news USA, TX: Two new breweries getting ready to open in San Antonio area
Despite the closure of Boerne Brewery in 2022, the craft brewing community in the Boerne/Comfort area continues to expand and further showcase the Texas Hill Country as a destination for fans of locally produced beer — as well as wine and spirits. Local homebrewer Donald Kretz plans to bring his recipes to the masses this spring with the planned launch of 28 Songs Brewhouse and Kitchen, the CultureMap San Antonio reported on January 24.

A veteran who fostered a successful career in the defense/intelligence industry, Kretz is now focused on turning his love for craft brewing into his own full-fledged brewpub. In early January, Kretz and his team began renovating the former Main and Market building at 110 Market Avenue, north of downtown Boerne, where four breweries — Cibolo Creek, Tusculum, Free Roam, and Dodging Duck — all sit within walking distance of each other.

Kretz is using a newly created Facebook page to keep people updated on the brewery's construction progress. In one post, he explained that the name 28 Songs refers to how cardinals can sing 28 different songs, adding that many people in this region feel a spiritual connection to the bird.

According to Kretz, the new nano-brewery will include ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Starflyer Brewing Co. coming to downtown Canton this year
Andrew Archer is not new to the brewing scene. He has been in the industry for more than seven years, most recently brewing for HiHO Brewing Co. in Cuyahoga Falls, the Canton Repository reported on January 20.

But now, he’s venturing out to start his own brewery, with some help from family. Archer, along with his wife, Bailey Archer, and her brother, Ethan Comfort, are the team behind Starflyer Brewing Co., a brewery coming to downtown Canton this year.

“We’ve always known that if we ever launched a brewery — or any business for that matter — it would be a family affair,” Archer said. “Beer has always been a part of our marriage, starting with the homebrew we served at our wedding reception, and Bailey has been wanting to start a business since she was just a little girl selling cookies and necklaces to family and friends. And when Bailey’s brother, Ethan, heard about our dream, he immediately asked to join in and offer his math and stats skills as our third partner and CFO.”

The brewery is in an unlikely spot, inside Deli Ohio at 328 Walnut Ave. NE in downtown Canton just a few blocks from Centennial Plaza. If you’ve ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Apalachicola’s High Five Dive Bar going into craft beer business
High Five Dive Bar is going into the craft beer business, partnering with an established Jackson County brewer with ties to Franklin County, Apalachicola The Times reported on January 22.

On Friday, January 20, bar owners Becky and Ronnie Jones announced that they had teamed up with Brian Walker, owner of Southern Fields Brewing in Campbellton, to produce their own local Coastal Soul brew on the site of the popular 15 Avenue F bar.

The beer should be on tap in the spring, and will be sold exclusively at High Five.

Becky Jones said that they began talks with Walker a few months ago to begin creation of Coastal Soul in a portion of the large space they have operated, and expanded, since first opening in January 2020.

“We just want to get better and have new elements every single year and I think this was the natural step to take,” she said.

Once the craft brewery is up and running, High Five will discontinue selling Oyster City beers, and have only Coastal Soul on tap for their draft beer aficionados.

Ronnie Jones said the business decision was prompted in part by the fact that as the Oyster City Brewing Company has expanded, first with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SD: XIX Brewing Co. planning to launch in downtown Vermillion
A new brewery, XIX Brewing Co., plans to open on Main Street this year using the current Fullerton Lumber Co. building. XIX Brewing was developed by USD Alumi Katey Ulrich and Ed Gerrish, The Volante reported on January 24.

Ulrich met Gerrish through his wife, Leslie. Because of Gerrish’s experience with brewing beer, Ulrich decided to invite Gerrish to the project. Leslie and Gerrish have also had experience in Vermillion businesses, as they both run the Cow and Spoon together.

“I was talking with Leslie about how perfect the Vermillion community would be for a brewery and that I have always wanted to open a bar,” Ulrich said. “We started working through what the process would look like and now here we are.”

With XIX planning on selling both wine and home-brewed beer, Gerrish will oversee the process of creating new brews at the facility. Because of its location in Downtown Vermillion, XIX Brewing Co. will be the closest brewery to the USD campus.

“Many community members have commented that this is something Vermillion needs,” Ulrich said. “It is something the community has really rallied behind since we started talking with people about it.”

Ulrich and Gerrish ultimately themed the brewery around Vermillion ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Black Acre Brewing Co. going out of business
Black Acre Brewing Co., a beer maker closely identified with the Irvington neighborhood during the past decade, is going out of business, the Indianapolis Business Journal reported on January 23.

The company announced on January 23 that its operations will cease on Feb. 4, a date that coincides with Black Acre’s 11th anniversary.

Holly Miller said she and fellow co-owners Justin Miller and Stephen Ruby decided that Black Acre had run its course as a business.

The company’s original tap room at 5632 E. Washington St., an outdoor beer garden at 5529 Bonna Ave., and a speakeasy-style bar at 130-1/2 N. Delaware St. will permanently close.

The Washington Street location reopened after being damaged in a December 2019 fire.

“The last couple of years have been hard, with COVID and our tap room burning down,” Holly Miller said.

Known for its Saucy Intruder rye IPA, Black Acre will shutter its Bonna Avenue production facility. Miller said the company is in discussions to sell its equipment.

Black Acre announced plans for a restaurant in Zionsville, to be called Corvus, in 2019. The location did not open.

“We know we are incredibly lucky to have been able to be a part of the vibrant community here,” Black Acre’s ownership wrote ...More info on site

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation lines up several capacity expansion initiatives
Beverages maker, Delta Corporation, has lined up several capacity expansion initiatives for financial year 2023 as it seeks to meet consumer demand, especially for its sorghum beer segment, The Herald reported on January 24.

The group is angling for growth opportunities in the economy, which local government has projected to grow by 3.8 percent driven by increased activity in the mining and agriculture sectors.

Delta indicated one of the planned initiatives entails bringing back the sorghum beer Scud pack to narrow supply gaps in the segment.

Company secretary Faith Musinga said the installation of the new Chibuku plant at the group’s Harare brewery will also enable the group to increase supply for its recently launched Chibuku Super banana flavour.

“The capital investment projects are progressing according to plan and expected to contribute to business performance in the coming financial period,” Ms Musinga said in a trading update released by the company.

“Banana flavour, which was launched in June 2022, has excited the market, and will see an increased supply once packaging capacity and supply chain bottlenecks are addressed.

“The installation of additional production capacity at Harare brewery is in progress for commissioning during the first half of 2023.

“There are ongoing efforts to optimise the available ...More info on site

Barley news France: Farm office raises soft wheat exports, barley and maize ending stocks forecasts for 2022-23
The forecast for 2022-23 soft wheat exports from France outside the European Union has continued to climb to 10.6 million tonnes, 21% more than last year, on strong demand from North Africa, Reuters reported, citing farm office FranceAgriMer.

France, the EU’s biggest producer of wheat, in December had been expected to ship 10.3 million tonnes of the grain, which had been an increase of 300,000 tonnes from the previous month, according to FranceAgriMer.

“What is clear is that demand is still significant from the Maghreb, particularly Morocco,” Paul Le Bideau, deputy head of FranceAgriMer’s grains unit, told reporters.

The competitiveness of French wheat in North African markets had been helped by rising insurance costs for shipping supplies from Russia, the world’s biggest wheat exporter, Le Bideau noted.

Market participants consulted by FranceAgriMer had estimates for French non-EU soft wheat exports ranging between 10 million and 11 million tonnes, he said, adding there was still much uncertainty over the impact of Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.

FranceAgriMer trimmed its outlook for soft wheat exports within the EU to 6.64 million tonnes from 6.73 million. It reduced its projection of French soft wheat stocks at the end of the 2022-23 season on June 30 to 2.33 million ...More info on site

Barley news China & France: China buys at least several large vessels of French barley this month
Chinese buyers are thought to have booked at least several large vessels of French barley this month, swelling a French export programme as merchants ship out a previous round of sales from late last year, Reuters reported on January 23, citing European traders.

China has become a major export market for French barley in recent years. As one of the few European barley origins approved for import by Beijing, France has attracted extra demand during a trade dispute between China and Australia.

In the latest deals, Chinese importers bought five to six panamax cargoes of some 60,000 tonnes each for shipment in the coming months, three traders said.

There was also market talk that the volume may have reached 10-15 vessels, or as much as 900,000 tonnes.

The latest sales were believed to have taken place in the past three weeks and were for crop from the 2022 harvest to be shipped in first half of 2023, mostly between January and March/April, traders said.

The barley was thought to have been sold for livestock feed rather than malt production.

Further sales were not expected immediately, though, after a sharp rise in French barley premiums following this month's deals and with the Lunar New Year holidays starting ...More info on site

Whisky news UK: The Scotch Malt Whisky Society announces new boss, says revenue likely exceeded expectations in 2022
The managing director of the company that owns The Scotch Malt Whisky Society has stepped down with immediate effect, as the business declared it was likely to have exceeded revenue expectations for 2022 and confident of further progress this year, The Herald reported on January 24.

David Ridley leaves the Artisanal Spirits Company having steered it through its stock market flotation in 2021, and following a year of membership and revenue growth.

Mr Ridley, who departs after six years with the firm, oversaw the development of a new supply-chain facility in Uddingston, which became operational in the fourth quarter of last year, the launch of the JG Thomson & Co spirits brand, and the establishment of the Society’s inaugural franchise agreement in South Korea. FJ Korea distributes products to more than 2,000 bars in the country. Last year also saw Artisanal form a partnership with Drinks Alliance in Malaysia.

Andrew Dane, who joined in 2020, has stepped up from his role as finance director to become Artisanal’s first chief executive. Billy McCarter, formerly group financial controller, has been appointed interim finance director while the search for a long-term chief financial officer takes place.

The changes were announced as Artisanal declared that it expects to ...More info on site
