Barley news Canada: Feed barley, wheat prices continue downward
As colder temperatures descend onto the Prairies, buying activity for feed barley and wheat was just as frigid, the Canadian Cattlemen reported on January 26.

“A lot of guys are fairly caught up with purchasing,” said Mike Fleischhauer of Eagle Commodities Inc. in Lethbridge. “You see the prices of wheat and barley start to trickle down a little bit. Corn’s down a little bit, as well. There’s still a pile of unit trains of corn coming down into southern Alberta, but I haven’t seen a real big uptick in people looking to purchase barley and wheat.”

Fleischhauer also mentioned that feed barley prices are at C$420-C$425 per tonne (C$9.14-C$9.25 per bushel) in southern Alberta, compared to C$440-C$443/tonne (C$9.58-C$9.65/bu.) one week earlier.

The high-delivered bid for feed barley in Alberta as of January 25 was C$9.58/bu., steady over the past month, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire.

“I think this year until new crop is going to be kind of shaky, up and down, I don’t know where it’s going to go. In terms of price, C$420 (per tonne) is a pretty good price at this time,” Fleischhauer said.

Corn is putting pressure on barley and wheat prices, but other grains are making their way into feedlots, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Trove Brewing Co. gets approval of opening plans in Burnsville
A new brewery and taproom plans to move into a long-dormant space within a Burnsville strip mall, the Minneapolis Business Journal reported on January 25.

Trove Brewing Co. intends to take over the former King’s Buffet space next to LA Fitness in Aurora Village, located at Country Roads 42 and 5 in Burnsville. The roughly 7,500-square-foot space has largely been vacant since the Chinese restaurant closed years ago, but it's been utilized seasonally as a Halloween Express store since 2018.

Plans for the brewery were approved on January 23 by Burnsville's Planning Commission. The City Council is expected to consider the project during its Feb. 7 meeting.

A Lakeville couple behind Trove Brewing is proposing a 3,500-square-foot taproom, a 3,000-square-foot production area and an outdoor patio near the front entrance.

Trove Brewing plans to sell growlers and crowlers from the taproom but doesn't plan to distribute to liquor stores, bars and restaurants for the first several years. It expects to produce and sell a variety of beer, including a flagship Kolsch, but won't serve its own food and instead rely on pre-packaged snacks typically offered at breweries and a rotating cast of food trucks.

Trove Brewing plans to host weekly events, including live music and ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Renowned Belgian beer Achel loses Trappist beer status
Renowned Belgian beer Achel will no longer be able to market itself as a Trappist beer, De Standaard has reported, leaving only five breweries of its kind in Belgium.

The news follows the recent purchase of the Saint Benedict Abbey of Hamont-Achel — better known as the Achelse Kluis — by Belgian entrepreneur Jan Tormans. The Achelse Kluis had previously belonged to Westmalle Abbey, another famous Trappist brewery.

Achel was stripped of its official Authentic Trappist Product (ATP) label in January 2021, after its brewing process ceased to be formally supervised by local monks — a prerequisite for being designated an ATP. However, given that the Achelse Kluis was still legally owned by Westmalle Abbey, Achel was able to continue to market itself as a Trappist beer.

"The concept and the ingredients will probably remain," said the Mayor of Hamont-Achel, Theo Schuurmans, on the De Ochtend radio show. He added that he suspected the "Achel" name will be retained, but merely without the "Trappist" label.

Only five official Trappist beers now remain in Belgium: Westmalle, Westvleteren, Chimay, Orval and Rochefort.

There are also two with official ATP labelling in the Netherlands, one in Italy, one in Austria and one in England. In May 2022, the ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Guinness number one beer at British pubs, restaurants and nightclubs, Diageo says
The number-one beer at British pubs, restaurants and nightclubs is the stout most closely associated with Ireland: Guinness, the Morningstar reported on January 26.

That's according to Guinness maker Diageo, which reported fiscal first-half results on January 26.

"I never believed I'd see this day. It's fantastic," CEO Ivan Menezes told analysts on a conference call. "The brand is really healthy."

The company more broadly reported a 15% rise in adjusted earnings per share to 98.6 pence, as revenue rose 18% to GBP9.42 billion ($1.7 billion). It reported a 1.8% rise in volume but a 9.4% rise in comparable sales.

Bank of America said both organic sales and earnings before interest and tax came in ahead of estimates. Growth was driven by Europe and emerging markets, but North America slowed more than anticipated, with organic sales of 3%.

Diageo shares skidded 6% in London trade. Simon Hales, a Citigroup analyst, said it's tough to see a silver lining as shipment patterns normalize, marketing spend rises and questions around the health of the U.S. consumer continue.
