Canada & China: China’s increased corn use could result in lower feed barley prices in Canada
|
China is using more corn in feed rations, which could result in lower feed barley prices in Western Canada, says an analyst.
“Feed mills have resumed mixing more corn in feed rations as higher prices for wheat and sorghum reduce demand for corn alternatives,” the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) said in a recent report.
Mills are using more corn due to higher Chinese production of the commodity and falling import prices.
China’s corn production in 2022-23 is pegged at 277.2 million tonnes, a 4.6 million tonne increase over the previous year.
“Feed mills report more corn in rations each month since July 2022,” according to the FAS report.
Compound feed contained an average of 35 percent corn in the first 11 months of 2022, which is four percent higher than 2021 but still well below the more traditional ratio of 50 to 55 percent.
Wheat is selling for US$55 per tonne more than corn, which has pushed wheat out of rations.
China holds contracts for 3.7 million tonnes of U.S. corn for delivery in 2022-23, 70 percent less than the same time last year.
The country is instead turning to Brazil for its corn imports, said the FAS.

USA, OH: Green Valley Brewing Company hoping to open in Hudson by late spring
|
A local brewer is tapping into his experience at some of Northeast Ohio's best-known breweries to launch his own beer business in Hudson, the Watauga Democrat reported on February 7.
Brewer John McGroarty and friend Nick Speck hope to have Green Valley Brewing Company open by late spring.
They've gutted the interior of what was once the Malted Meeple — and before that, a daycare center — at 53 Milford Drive in Hudson.
While there's still much work to be done, McGroarty is confident that he can have the place up and running before spring ends.
After all, he said with a laugh, spring's not over until June 17. (Actually, it's June 21; he has more time than he thinks).
McGroarty is no stranger to brewing. He started out as a home brewer before finding work at a number of Ohio breweries, most recently HiHo in Cuyahoga Falls.
Green Valley Brewing will offer a wide range of beers, McGroarty said.
"I've always been super passionate about pale lager and Belgian saison, as well as classic west coast IPA," McGroarty said. "But that's not to say that we're not going to have fruited sours, hazy IPAs. We'll definitely make a rotating seltzer."

USA, NC: Local Time Brewing to open its doors in Holly Springs in early 2023

Local Time Brewing, a travel-inspired craft brewery and taproom designed to celebrate culture and community, will open its doors in Holly Springs, North Carolina, in early 2023, the Craft Brewing Business reported on February 8.
Owners Chris and Kelly Gallagher have joined forces with Devin Singley, an award-winning brewmaster renowned throughout the Triangle, to bring their wanderlust spirit to life through the lens of craft beer and a friendly gathering space.
A rotation of six to eight handcrafted beers will be brewed on site, embracing the styles and ingredients of regions throughout North Carolina as well as those across Europe, Asia and the rest of the world. Visitors and patrons will be invited to recommend their own cultural inspirations as the basis for upcoming microbrews.
While distribution is part of the Gallagher’s long-term plan, the brewery’s initial focus is to cultivate a unique and relaxing environment throughout the 75+-seat capacity taproom and outdoor space. In addition to live music and trivia nights, Local Time is looking for partners to co-host programs like language classes and travel-planning workshops. USA, OR: Common Block Brewing reviving one of Oregon’s most unique breweries
|
Southern Oregon’s Common Block Brewing is reviving one of Oregon’s most unique breweries, which fell victim to the pandemic in 2021, the Willamette Week reported on February 3.
The Medford business is opening a second location inside the former Klamath Basin Brewing facility about 80 miles east in Klamath Falls, just north of the California border. Operations at the restaurant and bar there ceased in November 2021, with the owners citing slowing sales, price increases and staffing issues as reasons for the closure.
While Klamath Basin was off the beaten path for many Portland beer drinkers, its beers were widely distributed and could easily be found in taprooms, bottle shops and grocery stores across Oregon as well as in Northern California and Southwest Washington.
The nearly 20-year-old brand was also known for its unique power source: geothermal energy. Volcanic hot water aquifers—similar to those that created Yellowstone’s geysers—sit just below the surface of the Klamath Falls. Those wells heat everything from sidewalks to buildings throughout the city, and when Klamath Basin was still up and running, that included the water it used to make beer. The result was a much smaller carbon footprint than that of a traditional brewery.

USA, ND: Junkyard Brewing Company laying groundwork for another outlet in West Fargo
|
A Fargo-Moorbead area favorite craft brewer, Junkyard Brewing Company, is laying the groundwork for opening another outlet, this time in West Fargo, InForum reported on February 6.
Junkyard wants to put a new taproom in the former Bell Bank building at 409 Sheyenne St. and applied for city aid for the project, city records show.
West Fargo officials have brewed up an incentives package that if fully used would add up to nearly $700,000, about a third of which would be in property tax breaks and the remainder in economic development reimbursement grants, according to Casey Sanders-Berglund, the city’s economic development manager.
That proposal is currently scheduled to be heard by the City Commission at its Feb 21 meeting at City Hall.
“They’re a longstanding business. They’re basically a turnkey customer business,” Sanders-Berglund said. “It’s really focusing on the fact that we’re trying to grow our downtown. This is a functional infill.”
A Junkyard Brewing spokesman said Friday that the business has no comment on the proposal at this time.

Kenya: Diageo launches partial tender to increase stake in East African Breweries
|
Following the announcement made on 14 October 2022, Diageo, through its wholly-owned indirect subsidiary, Diageo Kenya Limited (“Diageo Kenya”), announced on February 6 that it had launched a partial tender offer to increase its aggregate equity stake in East African Breweries PLC (“EABL”) from its current 50.03% to a maximum of 65%.
The tender offer price is Kenyan Shillings 192.00 per ordinary share and the maximum number of shares subject to the tender offer is 118,394,897. The tender offer period will run from 6 February 2023 to 17 March 2023.

Algeria: World barley exports to Algeria plummet in the first 5 months of MY 2022/23
|
World barley exports to Algeria plummeted during the first 5 months of MY 2022/23 (July – November) with exports reaching just 1,600 tonnes, compared to 342,000 tonnes during the same period last year, USDA said in its latest report.
Algeria barley imports are strongly correlated with domestic production and tend to decrease during years of strong production. Algeria barley production for 2022/23 rebounded significantly to 1.6 million tons, a 68-percent increase over the previous year’s drought-ravaged crop, reducing the need for imports. The nation’s 2022/23 barley imports from all sources are forecast at 400,000 tons, a nearly 50-percent decline from last year. All major suppliers of barley to Algeria (the EU, Argentina, and Ukraine) have not shipped anything in 2022/23 due to lower production and reduced exportable supplies.
Grain acquisition in Algeria is dominated by the Algerian Office of Cereals (OAIC). While not explicitly banning imports by private entities, the domestic price support structure disincentivizes import activity by the private sector. Japan: Suntory to invest in upgrades to its Yamazaki and Hakushu whisky distilleries
|
As it marks its 100th year of whisky making, the Suntory group said on February 2 it will invest 10 billion yen ($77 million) over two years in upgrades to its Yamazaki and Hakushu distilleries to further improve the quality of its popular spirits, the Nikkei Asia reported.
Both locations will add spaces for "floor malting," a traditional process for preparing barley for brewing. The pilot distillery at Yamazaki, a small facility used for research and development, will add an electric pot still alongside its direct-fired still.
At the Hakushu distillery, Suntory will cultivate yeast -- a necessary ingredient for fermentation -- as well as update its facilities for visitors. The company plans to reopen both distilleries this fall.
As part of its plans to commemorate the 100-year milestone, Suntory will on June 6 launch a premium canned highball made with spirits from the Hakushu distillery, in a limited run of 150,000 cases. The drink will cost 600 yen per can, triple the price of its standard Kaku Highball. A beverage made with Yamazaki spirits is due out this fall.

The Czech Republic: Heineken to launch new pub franchise across the Czech Republic
|
World-renowned Heineken brewery is spearheading a new concept for franchised pubs, the Prague Monitor reported on February 6.
Branded pubs have started to flood the Czech Republic in the past few years, becoming quite popular with brands such as Plzeňský Prazdroj and Budějovický Budvar.
This year, Heineken is opening its own restaurant concept for the Zlatý Bažant beer brand.
The first Bažantovna has already been opened at the beginning of January in Prague’s Chodov district, with others to follow in Brno, Chomutov and Jihlava. In total, the brewery plans to open nine locations across the Czech Republic in 2023 and 2024.
Romana Domanická, a young designer, is credited with creating the Bažantovna (Pheasant House) design, which is a restaurant concept modelled for the Zlatý Bažant (Golden Pheasant) beer brand. The design’s colour palette is simplistic yet elegant, with gold and black colours complementing the glass designs decorating the back-lit bar. Moving beyond just aesthetics, this design also ensures a comfortable experience for patrons.
