USA, CA: Bear Republic being acquired by Drake’s Brewing Co.
|
Cloverdale-based craft brewing company Bear Republic is being acquired by San Leandro-based Drake’s Brewing Co.
Beer news and podcast The Full Pint obtained an email reportedly sent by Drake’s Brewing to its supply chain announcing the acquisition of the Bear Republic brand, one of the last few remaining craft breweries in Sonoma County.
The Press Democrat has reached out for comment from Bear Republic and Drake’s Brewing but has not received a response.
“This acquisition represents a significant step forward in our company’s future growth and our mission to bring people together over craft beer,” the email said.
“With the addition of the Bear Republic brands, including the iconic Racer 5 IPA, their other recipes, and the brand’s wide recognition, we are now better positioned to achieve that goal.”
The news comes after Bear Republic closed its Rohnert Park taproom in December 2022, citing slower tourism that comes with winter months.
President and CEO Richard G. Norgrove told The Press Democrat in December that the Rohnert Park taproom would remain vacant until at least the spring while the company decided on its next step.
The brewing company also closed its original brewpub in Healdsburg in 2019 to consolidate operations in Rohnert Park and Cloverdale.

USA, NJ: Bent Iron Brewing to become Hamilton’s first brewery by fall
|
A brewery making beers with farm-grown ingredients is all set to open in Hamilton Township. Bent Iron Brewing recently held a groundbreaking ceremony, the Patch reported on February 16.
Located on Extonville Road, Bent Iron Brewing will be Hamilton’s first brewery. The site is located on a 55-acre farm.
The idea for the brewery came to founders Peter Brittian, Jon Kanuck, and David Sass during the COVID-19 pandemic by the three founders.
They have hired Dave Ascione as their Brew Master and plan to make creative, consistent beers using farm-grown ingredients.
Bent Iron Brewing will offer craft beers in a fun, welcoming, and wide-open farm setting.
“The craft brewery market in New Jersey has grown exponentially in recent years. I am thrilled that Bent Iron has chosen Hamilton for its location,” said Mayor Jeff Martin. “Bent Iron will bring a fresh new life to our Hamilton economy by drawing in tourists and locals.”
Construction of the 5,000-square-foot barn will begin immediately and will house the beer production and a tasting taproom where beers brewed on-site will be available for sale.
The Brewery will also have a sizable outdoor seating space with a walkable hop yard and fire pits.
Bent Iron Brewery plans to open in the Fall of 2023.

USA, MO: Vine Street Brewing’s long-anticipated opening nearly here
|
Vine Street Brewing’s long-anticipated opening is nearly here, said Kemet Coleman, teasing a late March first pour for the taproom and brewhouse space, which sits adjacent to Kansas City’s historic jazz district, the Startland News reported on February 16.
“It’s crazy to see something that for so long has been just an idea in our minds starting to become real,” said Coleman, who founded the brewery along with Elliott Ivory and Woodie Bonds, Jr.
The first Black-owned brewery in the city, state, and region, Vine Street Brewing is located in the south building of the 2000 Vine redevelopment, a 150-year old building which formerly housed the city’s street department.
Although a few remaining elements of the construction process are still being finalized, Coleman said that the brewery has all it needs — tanks, kegs, and cold room storage — to start serving customers the last weekend in March.
The brewery’s flagship beer, the Jazz Man black lager, will become available to customers at locations across the city at the beginning of March, including in 10 to 12 bars, restaurants, and self-pour stations at the new airport, Coleman said.
“We’ll probably open our doors and be out in the market at the same time,” Coleman said.

Ukraine: Ukraine may continue to fall down rankings of leading feed barley exporters - analysts
|
Ukraine may continue to fall down the rankings of the leading feed barley exporters in the 2023-24 marketing season, according to preliminary estimates by Argus' agricultural analytics arm Agritel.
Ukraine was the world's third-largest barley exporter in 2021-22 and is expected to be ranked sixth this marketing season. But the country may lose further share of the global barley market in 2023-24, with limited supplies of about 1 mln t projected to be available for export
Agritel's current projections for Ukrainian barley exports in the 2023-24 marketing year ending 30 June are based on expected domestic consumption of about 3.2 mln t and overall barley supply of 4.8 mln t. The latter includes 500,000 t of beginning stocks, given that 2.4 mln t of product are expected to be exported this marketing season.
Ukrainian barley exports have totalled almost 2 mln t so far this marketing year, according to customs data, with the pace having slowed in recent months. Muted demand from China, slow operations through the Black Sea grain corridor and concerns over its extension after 19 March have limited demand for product. If 2022-23 exports fall short of projections, this could potentially increase beginning stocks and total supply of Ukrainian barley

Costa Rica: Two separate actions to result in lower beer prices in Costa Rica
|
Good news for Costa Rica’s beer drinkers, two separate actions will result in lower beer prices, Q Costa Rica reported on February 16.
On the one hand, Fifco announced a reduction in the prices of their Imperial and Pilsen brands. The company will be selling the six-pack in a 350 ml can, both Imperial and Pilsen, now for ¢5,500 and the famous “baldazo” of six units (12 ounces each), for ¢6,000.
The initiative is part of the “Se te hació” campaign, in response to consumers’ desire to enjoy more moments of summer, together with their favorite brands.
On the other hand, the government signed on February 15 the law to eliminate the tax on imported beers.
It is a 10% sales tax that is charged to foreign beers and not to national beers. According to the legislators who proposed the law, this reflected inequality. President Rodrigo Chaves said it is a measure to reactivate the economy.
With the elimination of the tax, the country complies with the conditions established in free trade agreements.

Kenya: East African Breweries loses Sh24 bln Senator Keg tax relief in three years
|
The tax relief that East African Breweries Plc (EABL) enjoys on its low-end beer brand Senator has dropped by Sh23.8 billion in three years after the government cut the incentive, the Business Daily reported on February 17.
A new report by the National Treasury shows that tax expenditure or the value of revenue foregone by the government due to tax reliefs on beer made from sorghum, millet and cassava, dropped to a new low of Sh18.4 billion in the fiscal year ended June 2021.
This was down from a high of Sh42.2 billion in 2018. In Kenya, EABL’s Senator Keg is the only known beer made from sorghum and was first introduced into the market in 2004.
Tax refunds for Senator Keg have been declining due to a decision by the State to cut excise duty remission, initially by 50 percent in 2013.
This introduction of the 50 percent excise duty on Senator Keg saw EABL cancel contracts with sorghum farmers and even stop production of the beer noting that it was not financially viable.
The remission was in June 2015 increased to 90 percent before the government reduced it to the current rate of 80 percent three years later.
