Brewery news Canada, SK: Minihkwe Brewery becomes Saskatchewan’s first Indigenous brewery
Minihkwe Brewery, Saskatchewan’s first Indigenous brewery, is now officially open in Saskatoon, the Global News reported on February 25.

Located at the Sandman Signature on Lorne Avenue, the brewery kicked off its opening on Saturday with a prime rib dinner, live comedy, magic and a musical performance by Armond Duck Chief, a Juno award nominee.

Owner KJ Bird said the idea for a brewery all started with something simple.

“The way it started out was just over a conversation and we were just kind of making jokes about starting our own beer company,” Bird said.

Now two and a half months later, the company is ready to launch two beers, which are expected to hit the shelves on March 1.

The first beer is named ‘The Minihkwe’, a blonde ale named after both the company and the Cree word for drink.

“Not only are we teaching everybody a word of Cree but there’s also on our label all the treaty territories in Saskatchewan … which is pretty cool,” Bird said.

The brewery will also be offering the ‘Omawisow’, a raspberry blonde ale meaning berry picker.

Minihkwe is partnering with Better Brother Brewing to help get their product off the ground. CEO Jeff Rushton said it was humbling when ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Widowmaker Brewing set to open its new brew pub in Brighton
Ryan Lavery and Colin Foley started brewing craft beers in a basement while hanging out with friends. That passion project has grown into so much more, The Patriot Ledger reported on February 24.

Lavery and Foley are the co-founders of Widowmaker Brewing, which opened on Wood Road in Braintree on Sept. 23, 2017. Six years later, they are barreling ahead to open a second brick-and-mortar location in the former Brato Brewhouse space at 190 North Beacon St., Brighton. The 5,000-square-foot brew pub will house a full restaurant, a taproom and an outdoor patio. The team behind the Bone and Bread food truck will run the kitchen.

"My partners and I were looking for expansion opportunities for about three years," Lavery said. "We looked into different areas, restaurants that might have been closing, and we had a couple of deals in place up and down the South Shore but they fell through. Nothing came to fruition. This was our sixth or seventh deal that we got pretty deep on."

Lavery said he’s aiming for a late spring opening and expects the new location to add another 1,000 barrels of production to Widowmaker’s operation. The Braintree location, which occupies about 8,000 square feet, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Rebel Sailor Brewing Company soft opens in Shortsville
Robert Payne has been homebrewing beer for 12 years, but for the last 18 months he’s worked to share his acumen with the public, the Rochester City Newspaper reported on February 27.

Rebel Sailor in Shortsville is the fruit of that labor. The small craft brewery is housed in the former Mark’s Pizzeria on Route 21 and serves an eclectic mix of beers made in its modest 3.5-barrel brew house.

Rebel Sailor had its soft opening last Friday, February 24, and plans to operate on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the near future.

“It’s relieving,” Payne said. “We thought 100 times we’d be open sooner, but between all of the red tape and all of the other stuff, and then my cooler, which we built ourselves…there were a lot of bits and pieces.”

Payne, a logistics coordinator for Progressive Machine and Design in Victor, views the brewery as a side gig to his day job and a means of getting his beers out into the world.

On its opening weekend, Rebel Sailor offered a healthy lineup of clean beers, largely in traditional styles, done with impressive attention to detail. The oatmeal stout offered a near-flawless balance of hearty roasted malt, subdued sweetness, and faint cocoa ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Green Valley Brewing Co. hoping for a June opening in Hudson
The duo behind Green Valley Brewing Co., which is under construction and hoping for a June opening in Hudson, is a great balancing act, Cleveland.com reported on February 27.

John McGroarty has some series brewing chops. He worked for Karbach Brewing in Houston for two years, then returned home to Northeast Ohio and ran Thirsty Dog Brewing Co.’s barrel-aging program for a year in Akron. He moved on to Canton Brewing Co. for almost two years, then spent six years at Butcher and the Brewer in downtown Cleveland. He then spent a year working with Jon and Ali Hovan of HiHO Brewing in Cuyahoga Falls.

Business partner Nick Speck, who has a background in software, simplifies things.

“I just like beer.”

Now the two are in “hurry up and wait” mode, said McGroarty, who said they mulled opening a brewery for “five or six years.”

“The goal was to be in Hudson as close to the downtown as possible, but the buildings themselves aren’t necessarily conducive to brewing on premise,” he said.

They happened to mention their plans to a banker they knew.

“We’re getting a little bit more serious, looking for an actual location, would love to be in Hudson but a lot of places on ...More info on site

Barley news USA, IN: Burn ‘Em Brewing celebrates opening of its news pot in Michigan City
The Burn ‘Em Brewing team and community leaders celebrated the brewery’s new spot at 1215 E. 2nd St., Michigan City with the turn of a shovel at a recent ground-breaking event, WIMS Radio reported on February 24.

“This has been a long time coming, and we are happy to be here. Hopefully, we will be open by the end of the year,” said Steve Murray, Burn ‘Em Brewing head brewer and one of the Michigan City friends who opened the brewery in 2014. “We can’t wait to see you here when we open the doors.”

“There is progress inside the walls despite the fact that we are just turning dirt now. It has been a unique experience as we have gone through Covid and its lingering effects,” said Ryan VanWaardenburg, Tonn and Blank pre-construction manager. “I personally have known most of the team for 15 or 20 years as we all went to school together. It’s great to be part of this generation and legacy as we continue to move forward. It’s a really cool project and we will wrap it up as soon as possible.”

The brewery, currently located at 718 Freyer Road, is expected to almost double production, expand distribution, add ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Naira scarcity worsens lack of demand by consumers – Nigerian Breweries
Nigerian Breweries Plc, a unit of Heineken NV, said a shortage of Nigerian naira denominations has worsened a lack of demand by consumers after inflation curbed purchasing power, Bloomberg reported on February 24.

The situation aggravated in the last two months as security concerns increased ahead of the country’s presidential elections on Feb. 25.

“Nigeria business environment remains very turbulent,” Hans Essaadi, chief executive officer of Nigerian Breweries Plc, said during an investor call on February 24. “The naira scarcity has aggravated things.”

The central bank’s attempt to replace old naira notes with new ones in Africa’s biggest economy has unexpectedly resulted in shortages in the last five months, stoking the ease of transacting in the cash-dominant economy. Inflation rose to 21.8% in January, the highest since September 2005.

The company’s profit before tax decreased 27% to 17.3 billion naira ($37.6 million) in 2022 even after revenue rose 26% to 550.6 billion naira, it said in a statement to the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

The maker of Star Lager, Legend Extra Stout and Maltina malt drinks sees demand for its products bouncing back after the votes and when the cash crunch normalizes.

Brewery news Vietnam: Ministry of Finance proposes to increase special consumption tax on tobacco, beer, and alcoholic products
Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance has proposed to increase the special consumption tax (SCT) on a number of items harmful to health including tobacco, beer, and alcoholic products to limit imports, production, and consumption, the Asia News Network reported on February 28.

The ministry is collecting public opinions on the proposal to develop the revised Law on Special Consumption Tax in which the SCT imposed on these products should be increased, saigondautu.com.vn reported.

In addition, the ministry also proposed to add new tobacco products and new equipment and trading in online video game services to be subject to excise tax, according to the online newspaper.

The MoF said the taxes on alcohol and beer in Việt Nam are still low. Currently, the country applies an excise tax on alcohol of 35-65 per cent, beer 65 per cent and cigarettes 75 per cent.

According to the World Health Organisation calculations, the tax rate only accounted for about 30 per cent of the retail price, compared to 40-85 per cent recorded in many countries.

Though the SCT on alcohol and beer products had increased from 2016 to 2018, Việt Nam was still the highest beer consumer in Southeast Asia and the third in Asia after Japan and China. ...More info on site

Barley news France: 94% of winter barley crop rated good or excellent
The condition of soft wheat improved for a second week last week, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on February 24, indicating a record dry spell has not yet strained crops in the European Union’s biggest wheat-producing country.

An estimated 95% of soft wheat was rated as good or excellent compared with 93% the previous week and 92% two weeks earlier, according to the office’s cereal report.

The score was also above the 93% registered a year earlier.

Grain traders and analysts have said crops have avoided cold damage this winter and that soil moisture has been adequate despite an unprecedented dry spell over the past month.

However, low February rainfall has raised concerns about a possible repeat of last year’s drought during crucial spring and summer growing periods.

For winter barley, 94% of the crop was rated good or excellent, while durum wheat scored 92%.

Farmers made more swift progress in sowing spring barley, with 80% of the expected area drilled by Feb. 20, compared with 58% a week earlier and an average 24% over the previous five years, FranceAgriMer’s data showed.

Brewery news South Korea: Spirit and beverage companies say they have no plans to raise prices
Several South Korean spirit and beverage companies announced that they have no plans to raise prices amid government scrutiny suggesting the industry could be targeted by anti-inflation measures, the Korea JoongAng Daily reported on February 28. Hite Jinro, the liquor company with the largest market share, announced in a statement on February 27 that it has no plans to raise soju prices for the time being. The announcement came almost immediately after the government began looking into the industry.

The National Tax Service reportedly had a closed meeting with executives of major soju and beer companies such as Hite Jinro, Lotte Chilsung Beverage and Oriental Brewery (OB) to ask about barriers to lowering production cost.

The Finance Ministry's tax office also began investigating the production and retail structure of spirit companies. Finance Minister Choo Kyung-ho urged the industry to cooperate with government efforts to battle inflation during a parliamentary meeting on Feb. 22, adding that people enjoy consumer products such as soju. "Factors for a price increase exist, but the measure to keep prices steady aims to lift the burden on consumers and the self-employed," said Hite Jinro in its statement. A spokesperson for OB also said the company does not plan ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Scotland’s whisky and beer makers alarmed by mooted advertising ban
Scott Laing, one of the many investors enticed into whisky production by a boom in demand, finished building the Ardnahoe Distillery in Scotland four years ago, the Financial Times reported on February 25.

Now, he is concerned that he may not be able to drum up interest in his first batch of liquor because of a mooted ban on alcohol advertising in the country.

“If we start selling [the whisky] in the next couple of years, we wouldn’t be able to promote it in any way within Scotland, which is a bizarre state of affairs,” said Laing, who runs the distillery on Islay with his brother and father, and invested £12.5mn to erect it.

Scottish officials have given the industry until March 9 to respond to a consultation on potential restrictions meant to help tackle the country’s “deep, longstanding and troubled relationship with alcohol”.

Beer, wine and spirits could be consigned to near the back of the shops or placed in closed cupboards, similar to tobacco products, to reduce consumption.

Other proposed measures, some of which will need Westminster’s approval, include a ban on advertising in public places, as well as prohibiting the sale of alcohol-branded sports merchandise, including sponsorship on replica kits.

The looming crackdown ...More info on site
