World: Carlsberg CEO to retire at the end of September
|
Carlsberg's Chief Executive Cees 't Hart will retire at the end of September, the Danish brewer said on March 7, after he has seen through the sale of its Russian business, Reuters reported.
Hart, the main architect behind Carlsberg's strategic shift from Russia towards China and a bet on prioritising price over volume, was hired in 2015, partly to help restore sluggish sales in its Eastern Europe brewing business.
During his eight years in charge he has successfully focused on cutting costs and improving sales of premium beers to compete with its larger rivals Heineken and AB InBev.
Carlsberg shares have risen more than 60% during Hart's tenure, outperforming AB InBev and Heineken, whose shares have dropped around 47% and risen around 45% respectively.
"He has done a very good job of stabilizing profits and taking out risk at Carlsberg," Nordnet analyst Per Hansen said after the Danish brewer said in a statement that Hart planned to leave by the end of the third quarter.
Carlsberg's shares fell 3.5% at market open in Copenhagen, but later pared losses and were 0.7% lower at 1118 GMT.
"Given his strong track record and the lack of a clear successor, we see today's news as negative," JP Morgan analysts

Kenya: Diageo succeeds in raising EABL stake to 65 percent
|
British multinational Diageo’s offer to buy an extra 14.97 percent stake in East African Breweries Plc (EABL) has been oversubscribed in the first phase of the offer, signalling high investor appetite for the premium the company offered for the shares, the Business Daily reported on March 7.
Diageo on March 6 said it has been offered 122.018 million shares by EABL owners in the initial phase, which closed on February 24, which is higher than the entire number of 118.394 million units the company is looking to buy in two steps.
The three percent oversubscription means that allocations will now be done on a prorated basis as earlier advertised by Diageo, prioritising early bidders who were on the EABL shareholder register by January 16 (the record date of the offer).
The London-based company is executing the acquisition of the additional stake through its wholly-owned subsidiary Diageo Kenya, through which it already holds a 50.03 percent stake in EABL.
This stake will rise to 65 percent now that Diageo has already achieved offers exceeding its target.
The company is buying 118.4 million shares in the brewer at a cost of Sh192 per unit, which puts the total purchase cost at Sh22.7 billion.

Kazakhstan: Barley, wheat production in Kazakhstan improve in 2022-23
|
Wheat and barley production in Kazakhstan improved in 2022-23, with both experiencing a 39% increase from the previous year, according to a report from the Foreign Agricultural Service of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Wheat production is estimated at 16.4 million tonnes, the highest since 2017-18, with improved weather and precipitation. Barley production is estimated at 3.3 million tonnes.
Kazakhstan exported 3.7 million tonnes of wheat in 2022-23, a 31% increase from the previous year. Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan remained the top three buyers of Kazakhstani wheat and wheat flour.
Based on the increase in wheat production and strong demand from traditional export markets, the USDA estimates wheat and wheat flour exports for 2022-23 to be 9.5 million tonnes, which is a 7% increase from the previous year.
The USDA estimates barley exports to be 900,000 tonnes, doubling last year’s export volume. This estimated increase is due to higher production and trader expectations that they will regain market share to Iran, Uzbekistan and China.

Ukraine: Most of Ukraine's winter grain crops in good condition
|
Most of Ukraine's winter grain crops - winter wheat and barley - are in good condition, Ukraine's academy of agricultural science was quoted as saying on March 6.
"The analysis of the viability of winter wheat ... showed that the vast majority of plants - 92% to 97%, depending on the predecessor and sowing date - were in relatively good condition," the APK-Inform consultancy quoted a report by the academy as saying.

World: Carlsberg plans expanded regenerative barley usage across brands in the UK, Finland, and France
|
Carlsberg Group is forging ahead in its global move towards regenerative farming. The beer giant is taking strides with three pioneer brands in the UK, Finland and France, on its journey towards 100% regenerative agricultural practices by 2040, PR Newswire reported on March 6.
The brand commitments form part of the Group's new ZERO Farming Footprint ambition within its recently launched ESG programme, Together Towards Zero and Beyond. Within this, the Danish brewer has committed to sourcing 30% of all agricultural raw materials from regenerative practices and sustainable sources globally by 2030, reaching 100% by 2040. Aiming to promote biodiversity, restore soil health and support natural carbon capture, regenerative agriculture is an important part of the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss.
Through some of its most demanding targets yet, Carlsberg Group hopes that working toward and delivering on this new ambition will help accelerate the beer industry's transition to a regenerative model. And while rethinking the 'farm to bottle' process is a challenging journey, requiring multiple stakeholder alignments and value chain reconfigurations, the early examples emerging in the UK, Finland and France are encouraging:
In the UK, Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company (CMBC) has committed to 100% regenerative barley
