Brewery news USA: Interest in direct-to-consumer beer shipping continues to go up
Interest in direct-to-consumer (DtC) beer shipping continues to go up according to the newest Direct-to-Consumer Beer Shipping Report from Sovos ShipCompliant and the Brewers Association, the Craft Brewing Business reported on March 9.

Actual demand has increased 5.3% since 2022, despite industry challenges and political opposition. Plus, 79% of regular craft beer drinkers would purchase more craft beer if they were able to have it shipped directly to their home, up from 75% in 2022. And that is the main thing holding back demand: Many states still do not allow it.

“The DtC shipping market holds a great deal of interest for regular craft beer drinkers,” said Larry Cormier, vice president and general manager, Sovos ShipCompliant. “We’ve seen a year-over-year increase in demand for trying beer shipped from out-of-state breweries. Results further suggest that breweries could experience positive word of mouth advertising from consumers, leading to increased sales via DtC.”

Sovos ShipCompliant commissioned The Harris Poll to conduct an online survey among 756 regular craft beer drinkers, (defined as Americans ages 21+ who drink craft beer at least once per month.)

Currently, there are approximately 9,400 breweries operating throughout the United States. However, DtC beer shipping is only legal in 12 locales (11 states ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Carlsberg completes acquisition of Waterloo Brewing
The Carlsberg Group announced on March 10 the successful acquisition of all the issued and outstanding common shares of Waterloo Brewing. The sale was approved by over 99% of Waterloo Brewing shareholders in a vote that took place on February 23 and all legal steps have now been finalised. Following the approval by Waterloo Brewing shareholders, the transaction was formally completed on Tuesday, 7th March.

Carlsberg Group CEO Cees ’t Hart says about the acquisition:

“One of the priorities of our SAIL’27 strategy is to grow our business in attractive markets where we are small today, such as Canada. The acquisition of Waterloo Brewing significantly improves our growth prospects in the Canadian market.”

Carlsberg’s international beer and cider portfolio complements Waterloo Brewing’s portfolio of local beers and ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages, creating a highly competitive company in the Canadian beer and RTD market. In addition, Waterloo Brewing’s production facility in Kitchener, Ontario, will produce some of the Carlsberg Group’s brands, including Somersby cider, which has been produced at Waterloo Brewing since 2020.

Waterloo Brewing President and CEO George Croft says:

“We’ve enjoyed a close relationship with Carlsberg and are excited about becoming part of one of the largest brewing companies in the world.”

Brewery news USA, NC: Burgaw Brewing set to open on Saint Patrick’s Day in downtown Burgaw
Burgaw Brewing, the first brewpub in the town, is set to open up on Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17, at 103 S. Wright Street in downtown Burgaw, according to an announcement from the company.

The building is 4,000 square feet and houses a 10-barrel brewing system. The bar and dining area seats about 100 guests, and work is ongoing on a beer garden for outdoor seating.

It will have guest taps from local breweries at first but expects to add about 12 of its own brews and a draft margarita on tap over the next few months. Burgaw Brewing’s flagship will be the “103 Lager,” a German lager.

The menu will include the Burgaw Burger, a smoked pork loin sandwich, a smoked chicken Philly and a sausage hoagie. As for sides, guests can expect to see fish and chips, nachos, chili cheese fries and smoked chicken wings with house-made sauces. The business plans to smoke all of the meats in-house.

Brewery news USA, WA: Structures Brewing opens new Old Town Brewpub in former Chuckanut Brewing location
Bellingham, Washington is undoubtedly among the best beer cities in the pacific northwest with with nearly 20 breweries, most of them good to great and many worth traveling for. Structures Brewing and Chuckanut Brewing are two of their brightest stars, so it was considered a major blow when Chuckanut decided to leave their original founding home on W. Holly street and open a taproom in Portland instead. Luckily for fans of their beer, Structures Brewing saw an opportunity to expand their long in-demand and in-short supply beers with a new brewery and their first full service restaurant while Chuckanut is doubling the size of their brewery in nearby Burlington. It’s a win/win, the New School beer + Cider reported on March 8.

“It is a great location,” says Structures Brewing founder James Alexander about the upcoming Structures Brewing on Holly St. in Old Town Bellingham, “The vision since 2015 has been to open a second location. And when we caught wind that 601 W Holly was going to be for sale, we moved on it. I am so stoked for them [Chuckanut] at their spot in Skagit. The beer they make is incredible, and their new build out is going to ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Budweiser Brewing Group is predicting huge opportunity for the off-trade this summer
With economic uncertainty continuing, there is ongoing pressure on disposable incomes impacting UK’s consumer spending, the Talking Retail reported on March 7.

Budweiser Brewing Group UK&I – which brews some of the UK’s best-loved beers – is bucking this trend, forecasting a 5.3% growth in the off-trade compared to 2019.

In response to the cost-of-living crisis, consumers are looking to cut back on their spending, resulting in fewer trips to pubs and restaurants, with 60% of on-trade customers saying they will visit hospitality venues less frequently.

As a result, Budweiser Brewing Group is predicting a huge opportunity for the off-trade this summer to capture some of this spend with beer remaining an affordable luxury.

“The past couple of years have been difficult for businesses across the country and as the cost-of-living crisis continues to dominate, there are still challenges for retailers to face,” says Maria Neves, head of category, Budweiser Brewing Group.

“However, there’s also a huge opportunity for retailers to capture consumer spend. Trends that we saw emerge during the pandemic are now becoming long-term habits so retailers must ensure they are responding to changing consumer demands. Understanding the new economic landscape and what to prioritise on shelf, will be key for retailers to ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Craft beer maker Bira 91 raises $10 million from Japan's MUFG Bank
Indian craft beer maker Bira 91 has raised $10 million from Japan's MUFG Bank, the companies said in a statement on March 9, as the New Delhi-based brewer looks to ramp up production and tap rising demand, The Economic Times reported.

The investment comes more than three months after it secured $70 million in a funding round led by Japanese beer maker Kirin Holdings Co.

Bira 91 holds a market share of 5% across key regions in India, tripling its pre-COVID numbers, the statement said.

Craft beer sales are on the rise in the country as younger, affluent consumers in big cities choose brands and pubs that make lighter brews and promise fresher ingredients.

Bira 91 competes with brands such as Carlsberg, Heineken, AB InBev -owned Budweiser and local giant Kingfisher in India.

Bira did not disclose its valuation or MUFG's stake in the company after the funding round.

"The Indian beer market is booming, owing to factors such as changing lifestyle of consumers, a growing preference for the alcoholic beverage and rising brand consciousness regarding imported and premium beers," Yasuhide Hayashi, executive officer at MUFG Bank, said in the statement.

Brewery news South Korea & Japan: Japanese beer imports in South Korea reach highest figure in three and a half years
Japanese beer imports in January hit the highest figure in three and a half years, according to the Korea Customs Service on March 7. Japanese beer imports reached $2,004,000 in the first month of 2023, a 314.9 percent increase on year. This was the highest figure since a trade dispute between Korea and Japan began in July 2019, when Japan slapped controls on exports of key materials for semiconductors and displays to Korea.

The move, widely believed to have been in retaliation for Korean court rulings ordering the liquidating of Japanese corporate assets to compensate victims of Japanese wartime forced labor, sparked a Korean consumer boycott of Japanese products, including Japanese beer. Korean imported $434 million of beer that month, but imports dived to $223,000 in August and plunged further to $6,000 in September. Popular Japanese beers like Asahi, Sapporo and Kirin were nowhere to be found in stores for a while. Japanese beer imports bounced back to $1.5 million in March last year, surpassing the $1 million mark for the first time since the trade dispute as anti-Japanese sentiment abated. Beer imports remained above $1 million between May and December and exceeded $2 million in January. Beer imports in January ...More info on site

Hops news South Africa: Hop farmers manage to maintain growth momentum
While South African barley and hop farmers have been able to maintain growth momentum, beer breweries are struggling to find their feet post-Covid due to a decline in consumer demand, the foodformzansi.co.za reported on March 8.

During an annual hop harvest tour hosted by South African Breweries (SAB) in George in the Western Cape, vice president for SAB, Zoleka Lisa, painted a “happy and hoppy” outlook for their beer company and farmers that supply SAB.

According to Lisa, Mzansi’s hop industry created an annual revenue of R90 million and about 1 500 jobs in the Southern Cape.

Lisa said the hop industry is 409 hectares in 2023, ranging from three cooperate farms, one research farm, seven private farms, and lastly, two black farmers in the country.

“South Africa produces nine hops varieties which are locally utilised and exported internationally. A total of 409 hectares of hops are currently cultivated in the George region [alone],” she said.

While farmers are exploring other regions, George is the only region in South Africa where the conditions are just right for hop growing.

Lisa added that local barley production increased by 70% in the last five years, as well as collaborations with various research institutions on barley hops, canola, wheat, ...More info on site
