Barley news Canada: Barley supplies projected sharply up in 2022-23
For 2022-23, Canadian barley supplies are projected at 10.6 million tonnes (Mt), up sharply from last year’s record low of 7.9 Mt. This is primarily due to a rebound in production compensating for record low carry-in stocks, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its March report.

As a result of the recovery in supply, demand for both domestic use and exports is expected to increase significantly from last year. Total domestic use is forecast at 6.0 Mt, up 28% from last year on higher feed and industrial use. Total exports are projected at 3.7 Mt, up 37% from last year, with additional support from the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) data which shows a decrease in production for some of the world’s major barley exporting countries and, respectively, a lowered export outlook. The major international destinations for Canadian barley and products include China, the US, Japan and Mexico.

Carry-out stocks are projected at 0.9 Mt, rising sharply from last year’s record low and marginally above the previous five-year average.

Brewery news USA, VA: New Belgium Brewing buying Constellation Brands facility in Daleville
New Belgium Brewing has announced it has struck an agreement to acquire the Constellation Brands facility in the Botetourt Center at Greenfield in Daleville, according to Botetourt County.

“New Belgium Brewing is a nationally recognized name, and we are excited to learn more about the production plans of New Belgium brands right here in Botetourt County,” says Botetourt County Director of Economic Development Ken McFadyen.

The New Belgium Brewing agreement is to acquire Constellation Brands’ 259,000-square-foot production brewery, according to the company. This agreement pertains to the facility itself and will include offers for continued employment by New Belgium for all current employees. The deal is expected to close in early May.

New Belgium Brewing says the acquisition will expand New Belgium’s existing production capacity to help meet growing demand for its craft beer portfolio, including Voodoo Ranger. Upon completion of the deal, New Belgium plans to immediately commence brewing at Daleville, focusing on Voodoo Ranger Juice Force IPA.

The transaction will also benefit the community, says the company, ensuring the continued operation of the state-of-the-art Daleville facility. All of Daleville’s approximately 60 workers will be offered a “seamless transition to New Belgium employment at equal or greater pay than before. A certified B ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Autodidact Beer to start serving customers this weekend
The highly anticipated new brewery in Morris Plains will finally start serving customers this weekend, the Patch reported on March 21.

Autodidact Beer, located at 1745 Route 10, Suite 6, in Morris Plains, is set to open its doors starting Friday, March 24.

Founders Ronnie Scouten and Ron Cassel said the hours for their opening weekend will be Friday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Saturday from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. The brewery will be closed on Sunday.

"These are just the hours for our opening weekend. We will be expanding them quickly," Casselsaid on the business's website.

Autodidact Beer is set to open on Route 10 East — a stretch in the vicinity of Wegmans, the new Uncle Giuseppe's Marketplace and restaurants such as Tommy's Tavern + Tap and Capital Grille.

"Autodidact strives to brew the best beers we can while pushing the boundaries of what we know and love about it," Scouten and Cassel said in a joint statement. "At our core, we are passionate about exploration, nature, art, and culture. We believe that personal experiences and community bonds are what define our shared human experience. With Autodidact, we want to create beers that bring people together over the things ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, RI: Iron Stag Brewing planning July opening in Cranston
Peek inside the storefront at 72 Rolfe Square in Cranston, next to the permanent Saugy food truck, and you can see the bones of what could become, by this summer, a new brewery with a very old twist, the Providence Journal reported on March 22.

Steel beams demarcate what will become the foyer, the bathrooms, the taproom and brewery, while a 16-foot garage-style glass door sits, unassembled and wrapped in cardboard, set to replace a brick wall. Even wood scaffolding is built and ready for the moment that Iron Stag Brewing has its final permits from the city and contractors can start building out the space.

Brewer Nate Tessier said the hope is the new brewery can open by July. While they have all the permits required to start brewing beer, the space needs to be built out, the walk-in cooler assembled and the first brews kegged.

President A.J. Kilroy said they want to build a brewery for the community and the neighborhood.

"We want to be a permanent fixture," Kilroy said.

The craft beer market in Rhode Island is filled with India pale ales and saisons, sours and lambics, ranch waters and hard seltzers, bringing bitter hops and barnyard funk.

Tessier, who used to work ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, UT: Chappell Brewing hosts its grand opening in South Salt Lake on March 24
A brewery is the latest addition to the fast-growing entertainment district amid the warehouses of South Salt Lake, Axios.com reported.

Chappell Brewing hosts its grand opening at noon Friday, March 24 with two beers on tap.

The brewery is at 2285 S. Main St., behind the Old Cuss Cafe, in a small and improbably attractive strip mall with patios, a courtyard and murals.

The brewery is part of a larger transformation of the once-industrial area west of State Street into South Salt Lake's "creative industries zone."

Bars are playing a leading role in the neighborhood, which is sometimes referred to as Brewery Row or Distillery Row.

Chappell is one of seven breweries and distilleries within about a half-mile of each other between 2100 South and 2700 South.

A few other restaurants and entertainment venues like Pat's BBQ, The Commonwealth Room and Bonwood Bowl are in the area.

Chappell will be Salt Lake's smallest brewery, owner Tim Chappell told Axios, and plans to offer two to five beers at a time.

Brewery news USA, MA: Loophole Brewing planning new brewery in Springfield
Loophole Brewing is planning to open a brewery and taproom in downtown Springfield, according to owner Jeff Goulet, masslive.com reported on March 24.

Loophole Brewing is a New England-based brewing company that also brews its own brand of beer. Its site features 13 regular brands varying from New England IPAs to German ales, along with 18 other special edition brews.

The company will expand to 51-59 Taylor St., and will be on the first floor of the building in Springfield, Goulet said. There will be an event space featuring live music, he said.

Goulet also said Todd Snopkowski, owner of SnapChef and partner in Loophole Brewing, will be on the third floor of the Taylor Street building.

In Sept. 2019, the company opened its first brick-and-mortar location in Holyoke, and it opened another location in April 2021 in Chicopee.

Barley news Ireland: Irish Distillers and Heineken to help barley farmers adopt regenerative agricultural practices
Jameson whiskey owner Irish Distillers and Heineken Ireland will work together for three years to help barley farmers adopt regenerative agricultural practices, The Spirit Business reported on March 23.

The three-year study will support farmers to ultimately improve the economic and climatic resilience of malting barley farming in Ireland.

The pilot project is part of a global collaboration initiated by Heineken and Pernod Ricard, parent company of Irish Distillers, on the resilience of agricultural raw materials.

The project will aim to improve soil health, carbon retention, increase biodiversity, improve water quality and improve the livelihoods of farmers.

Additional measures to achieve this will include minimising soil disturbance, increasing crop diversity, increasing soil cover by maintaining living roots all year round, and reducing chemical inputs.

Kathryn D’Arcy, communications and corporate affairs director at Irish Distillers, said: “At Irish Distillers, we have a proud history of buying quality grain from Irish farmers to produce our whiskeys.

“In line with the Pernod Ricard 2030 sustainability and responsibility roadmap ‘Good Times from a Good Place’, we are committed to working in partnership with our suppliers to develop regenerative agricultural practices that enhance natural ecosystems and respond to the challenges of climate change.

“Through the regenerative agriculture pilot programme for malting barley, ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Britain’s oldest brewer warns of prices hike in its pubs
Britain’s oldest brewer has warned that prices in its pubs are set to go up, due to rising inflation and the cost of living crisis, Yahoo News reported on March 23.

Official figures on March 22 revealed there was a surprise jump in inflation to 10.4% last month following a period when it decreased.

Now Shepherd Neame, which has 303 pubs and hotels in south-east England – predominantly in Kent and London – has said that the pressures of inflation have negated their recent upturn in profits.

As a result, price rises in its bars are expected, the firm said.

Chief executive Jonathan Neame told Kent Online: "I think prices will continue to go up – that's inevitable.”

Neame said that food prices in the company’s establishments had not yet risen, but added: "We will do our level best to keep good value for money and try and keep the pub experience affordable for people, but there is still a significant amount of inflation."

He added that the hospitality sector had been experiencing inflation “significantly more than the headline national inflation” and is still suffering the effects of the pandemic and current cost of living crisis.

He said: "I think we'd have hoped it would have been ...More info on site
