Brewery news USA: Craft beer segment estimated to have been down 4.8% in dollars in 2022
The craft segment has been down the last two years in the US and was down 4.8% in dollars in 2022, says Scott Scanlon, executive vice president of BevAl Vertical at Information Resources Inc. (IRI), Chicago.

For the 52 weeks ending Jan. 1 [2023], craft beer sales totaled $4.7 billion, a 4.7% decrease, in total U.S. multi-outlets. Case sales were down 8.6% during that timeframe.

Jon Berg, vice president of Beverage Alcohol Thought Leadership at Chicago-based NielsenIQ, notes not just the beer segment’s sales decline but that it is down to a 12% share for the overall beer market.

Success is always specific to a company and regional factors are usually more important than national trends, but craft beer sales (we’re talking packaged product here vs. taproom sales) could very well continue to contract in 2023 — for a variety of factors — inflation, less beer consumption overall, fierce competition from other craft breweries, fierce competition from other beverage alcohol (spirits to ready-to-drink cocktails) and an aging out of hardcore fans (a reason the non-alcoholic segment is growing).

Another confirmation of this came this week via the National Beer Wholesalers Association‘s (NBWA) March 2023 Beer Purchaser’ Index (BPI). The NBWA is a trade association ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Guinness' parent company to close manufacturing site; brewery staying open
The company that owns Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Halethorpe is closing a manufacturing facility that's by the brewery, laying off about 97 workers in June, wmar2news.com reported on April 3.

The actual Guinness brewery, taproom and restaurant will stay open, however, clarified Luis Rabago, spokesperson for Diageo North America, which is Guinness' parent company.

The popular brewery has welcomed more than 1.3 million visitors since opening in 2018, said the company.

"This decision will not impact our hospitality operations at the Guinness Open Gate Brewery taproom and restaurant. We have been part of the Baltimore community for many years and will continue to be an active member... We will continue to brew experimental beers to serve the brewery's taproom in the 10-barrel innovation brewery on the ground floor of the visitor center."

The state's labor department announced on April 3 that Diageo North America will close June 9. Diageo said they made "the difficult decision" after analyzing the company's "supply footprint."

"We do not take these decisions lightly and recognize the impact on our employees," the company said in a statement. "For those affected we are providing support in the form of severance packages, outplacement assistance, and employee assistance resources, as well as information ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Saugatuck Brewing about ready to open new downtown Kalamazoo location
Saugatuck Brewing is about ready to open at its new downtown Kalamazoo location, mlive.com reported on April 4.

The brewing company will open Monday, April 10, at its new location, 200 E. Michigan Ave, with a ribbon cutting at noon. That spot used to be home to the Olde Peninsula Brewpub and Restaurant, which closed in July 2021.

Saugatuck Brewing is based in Douglas (just south of Saugatuck) and also has a location in Grand Rapids. It closed its previous Kalamazoo location, 140 S. Westnedge Ave., in June 2022 to make the move.

“At Saugatuck Brewing Company, we pride ourselves on being a cozy and lively, yet laid-back atmosphere, offering a quintessential space to surround yourself with good company and enjoy fresh craft beer, delicious pub fare, and great conversations!” the brewery said in a Facebook post April 4, announcing the grand opening.

The space has 169 seats and will feature 13 taps, as well as cocktails. The food menu features everything from smash burgers to a vegan Mediterranean bowl.

The plan was to open months sooner in the new location, but it took longer than expected to get things approved, Michael Biddick, food and beverage director with Saugatuck, previously told the Kalamazoo Gazette/MLive.

“While we ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Rebel Sailor Brewing Co. and Kitchen already open in Shortsville
A funny thing happened as Robert Payne and a Norwegian fellow named Ellgin got to chatting online, the Democrat and Chronicle reported on April 4.

Eventually, the conversation turned to Kveik, a yeast from Norway, but that isn’t the funny part. Yeast is no laughing matter for a homebrewer like Payne, who years after brewing on his own was about to open a brewery.

The funny part is the two started joking back and forth about Vikings, which got Payne to take the subject seriously, leading to the name of the new place, Rebel Sailor Brewing Co. and Kitchen – rebel sailor can be another name for a Viking – and, as of the first month of operation, its most popular beer, the Kveik Red Ale. Yes, it’s made with the Norwegian yeast.

Visitors to Rebel Sailor, which opened earlier in the month in the former Mark’s Pizzeria building on Route 21, are taking to it, so much so that “we’re hoping to make that our calling card,” Payne said.

“If everybody is the same, then there’s no differentiation and life is boring,” Payne said. “We have our own story on how we discovered things and how we do them ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Boal City Brewing Taproom and Beer Garden set to open its doors soon
Boal City Brewing Taproom and Beer Garden is set to soon open its doors after the project, which sits on the Boal Mansion Museum grounds, was initially announced in 2021, the Centre Daily Times reported on April 2.

Owner Gordon Kauffman said the project faced “a lot of headwinds” in regard to construction, which delayed the taproom’s opening, originally slated for mid-fall 2022.

“We’re getting down to the final details. ... All the final details take a lot of time and a lot of decisions, but we’re getting really close,” he said.

As of late March, he said he anticipates a soft opening in April, before being fully operational by May 1.

Once opened, Boal City Brewing will include a 1,000-square-foot and seven-barrel brew house and 1,500-square-foot taproom, plus additional outdoor space with picnic tables, other seating and games. The space will be both family and pet friendly.

“We’ve come up with a really creative space. We used a lot of local craftspeople to build what you’ll see in the taproom. It’s turning out to be just what we had envisioned, so we’re really excited about it,” Kauffman said.

The brewery plans to offer a “well-rounded” selection of beers and beer styles, with an ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Devils Backbone’s newest brewery coming to Charlottesville
Devils Backbone has announced some exciting news in that it is coming to Charlottesville, CBS19News reported on April 2.

The company's base camp is in Nelson County, which is about an hour's drive for people in Charlottesville.

After searching for the best location, its owners finally made a decision. They will be establishing a new location at 1000 West Main Street. This is where Skipping Rock Beer Company was but Devils Backbone says it feels confident this is the best location for its newest spot.

“We knew that it was centrally located for everybody in Charlottesville to be able to get there whether you are working at the hospital, whether you’re over 21 and commuting into the school, whether you’re walking downtown to go to work. Either way, we know that this one can become kind of a community hub and centralized place for everyone in Charlottesville,” said Kim Oakley, the marketing director for Devils Backbone.

The brewery wanted it to be easy access to everyone, which is why the new spot is being called ”Devils Backbone Backyard.”

It will have full-time a brewer at this location, meaning the beer that will be sold onsite will only be sold at this site. It ...More info on site
