Brewery news South Korea: Combined shipments of liquor products down 3.5% in 2021
Shipments of alcoholic beverages in South Korea have decreased over recent years amid inflationary pressures and changes in attitudes to alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic, government data showed on April 7.

According to Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation data, the combined shipments of liquor products in 2021 came to 3 million kilolitres, down 3.5 percent on-year.

The figure in 2014 came to 3.8 million kl.

Between 2019 and 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, shipments of liquor products continued to drop. In 2019, the total shipments of liquor products reached 3.3 million kl, but the figure dropped to 3.1 million kl the following year.

By product, total shipments of beer products in 2021 have fallen by 1.8 percent to reach 1.53 million kl, accounting for some 51.4 percent of the total shipments of liquor products in 2021.

Shipments of soju products have fallen by 5.6 percent to come to 826,000 kl last year, or 28.6 percent of the total.

Despite decreased shipments of liquor products, revenues from liquor products have increased last year, largely due to their increased prices.

In 2021, revenues from liquor products came to 8.65 trillion won ($6.6 billion), up 1.1 percent on-year. In 2019 and 2020, annual revenues remained at 8.58 and ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Carlsberg Malaysia announces continued focus on its premium portfolio
Carlsberg Malaysia has announced a continued focus on its premium portfolio as well as some strategic new branding will be major parts of its newly launched five-year business strategy to cope and grow amid recession and inflationary pressures, the Food Navigator Asia reported on April 5.

Carlsberg Malaysia (covering the firm’s Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka operations) closed out the 2022 financial year with 36.1% growth in revenue from RM1.8bn (US$406.4mn) in FY2021 to RM2.4bn (US$541.9mn) this year; as well as 57.7% growth in net profit from RM201mn (US$45.4mn) in 2021 to RM317mn (US$71.6mn) this year.

The firm also announced the end of SAIL’22, the strategy that had tided it throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, transitioning over to a new five-year plan dubbed SAIL’27 which is expected to guide the company through the next five years to 2027.

The change comes at a crucial time as the firm continues to battle with ongoing cost challenges arising from raw material price hikes and inflation despite its optimistic financial results.

“2023 will certainly be another challenging year as a global recession looms following inflationary pressures - Both Malaysia and Singapore are expected to record more moderate growth rates as inflation persists amid escalating commodity prices,” Carlsberg Malaysia ...More info on site

Brewery news Puerto Rico: Microbreweries gaining ground in Puerto Rico
With a variety of styles and flavors, the presence of local craft beers has been seen more and more since 2010 when the first microbreweries were established in Puerto Rico, whose industry now numbers about twenty around the island, The Weekly Journal reported on April 6.

“When craft beer started arriving here in the early 2000s, there was an initial rush to try the beers. Then it went down a bit because people did not adapt very well to them. However, over the last few years, people have adapted and learned, especially young people who are jumping right into craft beer,” said William “Ricky” Quintana, content creator for the RickyCraftBier Instagram page dedicated to educate about craft beer from Puerto Rico.

Since the page began in 2019, it has developed a map that identifies microbreweries in towns of Puerto Rico, in which it currently presents 22 of those already established. By region, two are in the eastern area, seven in the north, seven in the west and three in the central area.

Quintana also highlighted that there are currently more than 100 establishments, including bars, restaurants and convenience stores that sell craft beers, whose prices fluctuate from $4 to $14.

Brewery news Brazil: Labour ministry wants to blacklist Heineken for transport company abuses
Brazil’s labour ministry wants to blacklist Heineken following abuses at a transport company the brewery group works with. This would trigger a boycott by the country’s two biggest supermarket chains, Retail Detail reported on April 6.

The case came to light after an inspection by the labour ministry. Transport company Sider made its drivers work more than contractually agreed, preventing them from respecting their driving and rest periods. They were also forced to sleep in their trucks because Sider had not arranged accommodation, Dutch newspaper FD reports.

As a result, Brazil’s two largest supermarket chains (Carrefour and Păo de Açúcar) would stop working with Heineken. Along with seventy other large Brazilian companies, they have decided to end cooperation with blacklisted companies.

The case is unique, says inspector Mauricio Krepsky Fagundes of Brazil’s labour ministry. Usually, the big fish escape the consequences.

It is unclear how the case will turn out, argues Maria Clara Rodrigues, an economist who has researched the blacklist: “Often, the (smaller) company where the wrongdoing has been found ends up on the list. Large companies can afford to hire good lawyers.”

Brewery news The Netherlands: Heineken facing fine if it continues to flaunt deposit rules
Environmental inspectors have slapped brewing giant Heineken with a conditional fine which could go up to over €1 million if it continues to flaunt the new rules for deposits on cans, the Dutch News reported on April 6.

Heineken is still producing cans without the deposit logo despite the new rules which came into effect on April 1, claiming it does so in order ‘not to waste metal and cardboard’. Grolsch has taken a similar position but is not yet facing a financial penalty.

The infraction will cost the brewer 15 cents per can, up to a maximum of €1 million which will be topped up if Heineken persists in selling cans without the logo. The brewer has not yet commented on the fine.

Inspectors have also found that some supermarkets are charging a 15 cent deposit on cans that do not carry the deposit logo because they are part of older stock. Shoppers can only check of they have paid a deposit on a can if they look at their receipt and may not get their money back when they hand it in.

The ILT is still studying the matter, it said, but expects this to be a temporary ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Hitejinro launches new lager to compete with rival Oriental Brewery
Hitejinro, a major local brewer, has launched a new lager called Kelly as part of efforts to regain its No. 1 status from its rival Oriental Brewery (OB), according to company officials on April 6.

Kelly is Hitejinro's first new product since 2019 when it introduced Terra, another lager. The name Kelly is short for "keep naturally," which means minimizing the artificial taste of the product and making it as natural as possible. The lager is made with Danish barley that has been germinated for 24 hours longer than other barleys.

"We made Kelly based on our long-term research on consumers' expectations and demands in the regular beer market. Kelly will create a strong sensation in the local market and help us recapture our top position," Hitejinro CEO Kim In-gyu said during a press conference held in Seoul.

According to market research firm Nielsen Korea, Oriental Brewery's lager Cass topped the domestic beer market with a 43 percent market share as of January this year, while Terra had an 18.6 percent share.

Hitejinro maintained its No. 1 position in the domestic market with its Hite beer brand until 2012 when it fell to second place behind OB. Hitejinro later launched Terra to overturn the ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Feed barley bids historically strong in Western Canada
Feed barley bids in Western Canada remain historically strong, despite easing off their highs over the past month and trending lower, the Alberta Farmer Express reported on April 6.

With bids of around C$410 per tonne into the Lethbridge feedlot alley, feed barley “is still a sell,” according to Mike Jubinville of MarketsFarm, speaking on a webinar. However, he noted there were a few headwinds in the barley market.

The feedlot industry has become much more comfortable importing corn from the U.S., with the convenience of bringing up a trainload of corn — compared to contracting hundreds of trucks of local barley — keeping corn in feed rations even as the price spread shifts.

The preference is still for barley, but Jubinville noted if the economic opportunity of bringing in corn by rail is there, feedlots would continue to take it.

On the export front, Canada remains very price-competitive shipping barley to China — but that could easily change.

A trade dispute between Australia and China is keeping Australian barley out of the Chinese market for the time being, but talks between the two countries could change that, Jubinville cautioned.

In addition, African swine fever is showing a resurgence in China, which could also limit feed ...More info on site

Whisky news UK & India: Diageo likely to benefit from potential UK/India trade deal
Diageo is likely to experience an upside from a potential UK/India trade deal, according to Barclays, which remains overweight on the alcoholic drinks manufacturer, Proactive Investors reported on April 6.

Barclays also kept its 4,890p target price.

The company behind brands such as Guinness and Captain Morgan does, however, have low exposure to the ongoing China recovery as lockdown restrictions ease.

Diageo will soon be undergoing a period of transition after boss Ivan Menezes announced he will retire as chief executive officer on 30 June 2023 after 10 years in the role and be succeeded by the current chief operating officer Debra Crew.

Menezes, who joined the company following the merger of Guinness and Grand Metropolitan in 1997, helped Diageo make “great strides" towards becoming one of the most “trusted and respected” consumer product companies, the group said.
