Brewery news Canada: Cost of beer going up faster than before
The cost of beer has been going up in Canada, and faster than it did in years past, according to the monthly Consumer Price Index data from Statistics Canada.

And while large brewers and restaurant associations criticized a planned tax hike on alcohol that could have increased the prices Canadians pay, that excise tax is just one part of what is frothing up beer prices these days.

"The cans, the bottles, raw materials, such as the malted barley and the hops. Everything has kind of went up in price," said Neil Reid, beer researcher and professor of geography and planning at the University of Toledo in Ohio.

"I think that's been a big, big factor in these price increases that we've seen across the board," said Reid, who is often labelled the "Beer Professor" online.

"It's not just a case of prices going up but it's also the availability of some of these material inputs," explained Reid, who pointed out that in some regions there have been shortages of aluminum for canning, or carbon dioxide, which is used to carbonate or make beer fizzy.

A lack of availability can either drive up prices or make the product more scarce — or sometimes both, say brewers.

Brewery news Romania: PET-bottled beer sales the lowest in the last decade
The share of PET-bottled beer in total beer sales reached 38.7% in Romania in 2022, the lowest level in the last decade and a half, according to data from the Romanian Brewers Association, which brings together the main producers of beer and raw materials in the beer sector.

The drop comes when the overall beer consumption fell in 2022, but more expensive packaging (given the per-litre price paid), such as glass, gained ground.

PET-bottled is the only category of the market that contracted last year by almost three percentage points. Glass-bottled beer reached a market share of 33.3%, the can-bottled segment holds a share of 24.8%, and the beer bottled in barrels accounted for 3.2% of the market, according to the cited source, Ziarul Financiar reported.

The undisputed winners of the year 2022 were the categories of glass- and barrel-bottled, maintaining the trend of premiumization.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Government considering increase in VAT rate on beer
Czech Finance Minister Zbynek Stanjura is considering an increase in the value-added tax (VAT) rate on beer in a major overhaul of the VAT regime, part of government efforts to cut the deficit, Reuters reported on April 11.

The reforms would combine the current two lower VAT rates of 10% and 15% into a 14% rate, while maintaining a top level of 21%, the Finance Ministry said on April 11.

The ministry did not list all the items which could see VAT rates increase, but Czech TV, which first reported the plans on Monday evening and called them the biggest VAT changes in eight years, said hotels, beer, water and sport could see an increase.

Stanjura told Czech TV that beer would be among items moved to a higher bracket and that items would be judged on whether "there is a societal reason to consume more of these services".

A rise in the tax on beer could be the most eye-catching tax move in a country with one of the highest per-capita beer consumption rates in the world.

A half-litre of top-selling brand Pilsner Urquell typically costs around 60 Czech crowns ($2.79) in Prague, so an increase in VAT to 21% from 10% could lead ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Carlsberg acquires UK rights for Kronenbourg from Heineken UK
Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) has signed deal for Carlsberg Group to acquire the UK rights for Kronenbourg from Heineken UK, The Drinks Business reported on April 12.

The deal, which transfers the licence of the French beer brand from 1 June 2023, will see Carlsberg Group acquire all rights to produce and distribute Kronenbourg 1664 in the UK via CMBC.

Under the agreement, Heineken UK will continue to brew and pack Kronenbourg 1664 under contract, before moving to CMBC in 2024.

A three-year commercial arrangement has also been agreed to continue to list and provide the brand to Heineken UK’s Star Pubs & Bars.

Historically, Heineken UK has held the licence for Kronenbourg 1664 since 2008, following the acquisition of Scottish & Newcastle by Carlsberg and Heineken.

Paul Davies, CEO of CMBC, said “Supporting brands and innovating in the premium category is a key pillar of our strategy and adding Kronenbourg 1664 to our enviable portfolio is an incredible opportunity to achieve this.”

Boudewijn Haarsma, managing director of Heineken UK, explained: “We’ve been a strong custodian of Kronenbourg in the UK over the last fourteen years, maintaining product quality and investing in its marketing and distribution as part of our portfolio. During this time, we ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken launches Spanish draft beer Cruzcampo in the UK on-trade
Heineken UK has exclusively revealed the launch of Cruzcampo (4.4% ABV) in the UK on-trade to The Morning Advertiser (MA).

The firms senior brand manager, Christopher Buckwell, told The MA while the positioning of Cruzcampo is a mainstream premium lager, the serve presents a “nice opportunity” for operators to draw in consumers looking for “premiumisation at an affordable price point”.

He said: “Heineken UK is really pleased to announce it’s bringing Cruzcampo, the number one draft beer in Spain, over to the UK.

“[Cruzcampo] offers consumers an opportunity to taste something really authentic, a really great quality beer with lots of heritage, but at a price point that isn't going to break the bank.

“We know this year is going to be all about getting consumers back in the pub and having something on the bar that offers them a bit of discovery and feels like a real treat, but is a bit more affordable, is going to be really important this year.”

Recent figures from CGA showed Spanish lager has increased in popularity, having grown 73% in the premium and mainstream lager category as of February this year, with one in five lagers served in the UK on-trade now Spanish.
