Brewery news Canada: Cost of beer going up faster than before
The cost of beer has been going up in Canada, and faster than it did in years past, according to the monthly Consumer Price Index data from Statistics Canada.

And while large brewers and restaurant associations criticized a planned tax hike on alcohol that could have increased the prices Canadians pay, that excise tax is just one part of what is frothing up beer prices these days.

"The cans, the bottles, raw materials, such as the malted barley and the hops. Everything has kind of went up in price," said Neil Reid, beer researcher and professor of geography and planning at the University of Toledo in Ohio.

"I think that's been a big, big factor in these price increases that we've seen across the board," said Reid, who is often labelled the "Beer Professor" online.

"It's not just a case of prices going up but it's also the availability of some of these material inputs," explained Reid, who pointed out that in some regions there have been shortages of aluminum for canning, or carbon dioxide, which is used to carbonate or make beer fizzy.

A lack of availability can either drive up prices or make the product more scarce — or sometimes both, say brewers.

Brewery news USA, CO: Four more breweries closing their doors in Front Range
New breweries have been opening at a furious pace in Colorado over the last several months — with more than a dozen more on pace to pour their first beers by the end of 2023, The Denver Post reported on April 11.

But when the glass is half full, it also means it’s half empty. In the past few weeks, four Front Range breweries or brewery-owned taprooms have closed or announced imminent closures.

Smiling Toad Brewing, which was founded in 2013 before closing temporarily in 2020 and reopening a year later in a new location, has announced the end of the road.

“We have news to share. After 10 fantastic years of brewing up a storm, Smiling Toad Brewery is calling it a decade,” owners Bill and Patti Biff wrote on Facebook on April 3. But the brewery plans to keep the taps open into May (or until the beer runs dry).

The Hoglund and Nichols families, owners of Front Range Brewing, made the “extremely challenging decision” to throw in the towel on March 24 after 10 years. They cited the pandemic and its effects in a note they wrote to customers on Facebook last month.

“This decision has not been easy to come to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Tioga Sequoia Brewing Company's new location opens in Merced
A popular Central California brewery is getting ready to open its newest location - this time in the North Valley, KFSN reported.

The grand opening for Tioga Sequoia Brewing Company's new location is Saturday, April 8 in downtown Merced.

Michael Cruz is the President of Tioga Sequoia Brewery.

He is excited to open this new location.

"We love the idea of revitalization in cities, specifically in the downtown core. We're in a beautiful building. The like namesake of Tioga, which can't be more perfect," said Cruz.

The grand opening will start at noon and run until 11 pm. But for Cruz, it's more than a celebration.

"Tapping into the community, the culture. Letting that enrich our brands and what we do, how we partner with entertainment, businesses, art whatever it may be. All those influences that are locally and community driven. We let that drive us to grow and our motivation."

This new location is just one of several new businesses reshaping the downtown area.

Merced resident Amanda Williams said it's refreshing to see so many new businesses welcoming visitors.

"I can just see the growth and kind of the change in perspective of what Merced is and what it can be, and I'm actually really excited for all ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Dokkaebier announces acquisition of Federation Brewing
California-based craft brewery Dokkaebier has bought local beer producer Federation Brewing for an undisclosed fee.

Launched in 2020, the Asian-inspired beer maker has acquired Federation Brewing in its entirety, including its brands, brewery and taproom. Federation’s brewery and taproom in Oakland, California will soon be rebranded as Dokkaebier.

Dokkaebier will retain all nine of Federation’s members of staff, amounting to a total of around 20 employees overall. This is the craft brewer’s first acquisition since inception.

Youngwon Lee, the CEO and founder of Dokkaebier, told Just Drinks the addition of Federation Brewery will accelerate the company’s growth and distribution as well as increase production.

He said: “The acquired brewery and taproom will help Dokkaebier ramp up production by thousands of barrels, produce and release dozens of new craft beer varieties and flavours a year, and host dozens of events as part of the local community.

“Dokkaebier will also take over Federation Brewing’s distribution relationships and local partnerships, which include new retailers, delivery service providers and alternating proprietorships with craft breweries.”

Federation’s beers, including In The Weeds IPA and Utopia Planitia Red Rye, are available through local retailers, e-commerce and its own taproom.

“We thank Federation Brewing for giving us the opportunity to cement Dokkaebier’s roots in Oakland,” ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Xicha Brewing opens second location in North Salem to increase production volume
Xicha Brewing has opened a second location inside the 45th Parallel building in North Salem,, the Statesman Journal reported.

The move to the new space is primarily for increasing the volume of production, Melissa Sanchez, Xicha's marketing coordinator, said. The space was previously Vagabond Brewing's operational space, but closed in early 2022. The brewery operation is projected to finish its move in late April, potentially early May.

The new space's capacity is almost twice as large as the West Salem location. In the future, all events will be held at this site since it also has a stage, Sanchez said.

Talks of moving began in September and the space was secured in December, Sanchez said. Renovations took around four months.

The space is now much brighter and festively decorated compared to the prior dark paint and sports paraphernalia that used to hang on the walls. Various walls are painted vibrant teal, pink and yellow. A mural of an owl is on the wall above the stage as well. Plants and animals like cacti and hummingbirds are also painted on the walls, along with framed decor and plants.

The North Salem location will also have a slightly adjusted menu, with more items tailored for the lunch ...More info on site

Brewery news Romania: PET-bottled beer sales the lowest in the last decade
The share of PET-bottled beer in total beer sales reached 38.7% in Romania in 2022, the lowest level in the last decade and a half, according to data from the Romanian Brewers Association, which brings together the main producers of beer and raw materials in the beer sector.

The drop comes when the overall beer consumption fell in 2022, but more expensive packaging (given the per-litre price paid), such as glass, gained ground.

PET-bottled is the only category of the market that contracted last year by almost three percentage points. Glass-bottled beer reached a market share of 33.3%, the can-bottled segment holds a share of 24.8%, and the beer bottled in barrels accounted for 3.2% of the market, according to the cited source, Ziarul Financiar reported.

The undisputed winners of the year 2022 were the categories of glass- and barrel-bottled, maintaining the trend of premiumization.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Government considering increase in VAT rate on beer
Czech Finance Minister Zbynek Stanjura is considering an increase in the value-added tax (VAT) rate on beer in a major overhaul of the VAT regime, part of government efforts to cut the deficit, Reuters reported on April 11.

The reforms would combine the current two lower VAT rates of 10% and 15% into a 14% rate, while maintaining a top level of 21%, the Finance Ministry said on April 11.

The ministry did not list all the items which could see VAT rates increase, but Czech TV, which first reported the plans on Monday evening and called them the biggest VAT changes in eight years, said hotels, beer, water and sport could see an increase.

Stanjura told Czech TV that beer would be among items moved to a higher bracket and that items would be judged on whether "there is a societal reason to consume more of these services".

A rise in the tax on beer could be the most eye-catching tax move in a country with one of the highest per-capita beer consumption rates in the world.

A half-litre of top-selling brand Pilsner Urquell typically costs around 60 Czech crowns ($2.79) in Prague, so an increase in VAT to 21% from 10% could lead ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Carlsberg acquires UK rights for Kronenbourg from Heineken UK
Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) has signed deal for Carlsberg Group to acquire the UK rights for Kronenbourg from Heineken UK, The Drinks Business reported on April 12.

The deal, which transfers the licence of the French beer brand from 1 June 2023, will see Carlsberg Group acquire all rights to produce and distribute Kronenbourg 1664 in the UK via CMBC.

Under the agreement, Heineken UK will continue to brew and pack Kronenbourg 1664 under contract, before moving to CMBC in 2024.

A three-year commercial arrangement has also been agreed to continue to list and provide the brand to Heineken UK’s Star Pubs & Bars.

Historically, Heineken UK has held the licence for Kronenbourg 1664 since 2008, following the acquisition of Scottish & Newcastle by Carlsberg and Heineken.

Paul Davies, CEO of CMBC, said “Supporting brands and innovating in the premium category is a key pillar of our strategy and adding Kronenbourg 1664 to our enviable portfolio is an incredible opportunity to achieve this.”

Boudewijn Haarsma, managing director of Heineken UK, explained: “We’ve been a strong custodian of Kronenbourg in the UK over the last fourteen years, maintaining product quality and investing in its marketing and distribution as part of our portfolio. During this time, we ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken launches Spanish draft beer Cruzcampo in the UK on-trade
Heineken UK has exclusively revealed the launch of Cruzcampo (4.4% ABV) in the UK on-trade to The Morning Advertiser (MA).

The firms senior brand manager, Christopher Buckwell, told The MA while the positioning of Cruzcampo is a mainstream premium lager, the serve presents a “nice opportunity” for operators to draw in consumers looking for “premiumisation at an affordable price point”.

He said: “Heineken UK is really pleased to announce it’s bringing Cruzcampo, the number one draft beer in Spain, over to the UK.

“[Cruzcampo] offers consumers an opportunity to taste something really authentic, a really great quality beer with lots of heritage, but at a price point that isn't going to break the bank.

“We know this year is going to be all about getting consumers back in the pub and having something on the bar that offers them a bit of discovery and feels like a real treat, but is a bit more affordable, is going to be really important this year.”

Recent figures from CGA showed Spanish lager has increased in popularity, having grown 73% in the premium and mainstream lager category as of February this year, with one in five lagers served in the UK on-trade now Spanish.

“UK life can feel quite ...More info on site
