Brewery news South Africa: Heineken pledges to invest R15.5 bln in South Africa expansion
Dutch brewer Heineken has pledged to invest R15.5 billion in the expansion of their breweries and beverages manufacturer lines in South Africa, Moneyweb reported.

The investment – which is also linked to its recent R38.22 billion acquisition of the Distell group – was announced at the fifth South African Investment Conference held at the Sandton Convention Centre on April 13.

“This investment underscores our continued belief in the development and sustainability of South Africa. The 2023 SA Investment Conference is an incredible showcase of how private sector investment can help to transform a country and its economy,” Heineken SA managing director Jordi Borrut said in a statement.

“We are honoured to take part in this journey and invest further into South Africa – alongside the region as a whole. We fully support the conference’s overall goals of socio-economic development, creating sustainable jobs, reducing poverty, and driving back inequality,” Borrut aded.

South Africa’s competition authorities gave Heineken the go-ahead to buy Distell – which was once listed on the JSE – but only if Newco, the company which Heineken South Africa and Namibia Breweries are merging under, committed to investing in the local breweries and beverages sector.

One of the public interest conditions to the sale ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Oriental Brewery launches second craft beer to boost its presence in the sector
Oriental Brewery (OB) has been boosting its presence in the craft beer market going after an increasing number of young consumers who prefer alternatives to generic mass-produced beer, according to industry officials, The Korea Times reported on April 13.

OB is the country's largest brewery with its best-selling beer brand Cass dominating the household market with 42 percent of the market share. However, as the demand for craft beer has been increasing, the brewer saw the need to introduce differentiated products from already-established mass-produced ones.

On April 10, the company introduced its second craft beer product Honey 054, following its successful launch of Ginger 063 in March. Ginger 063 was sold out only a month after its release thanks to an explosive response from consumers.

"Our launch of new craft beer series aims to target young consumers, especially those who have high standards regarding the beer taste. Some consumers are happy with beers like Hite and Cass, but some want something more sophisticated and delicate. Our Honey 054 and Ginger 063 beers are for people who a passionate about beer," an OB official said.

OB is taking a two-pronged approach so as to target mass-produced and craft beer markets separately. It wants to protect ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland & France: Diageo to delist from Euronext Paris and Euronext Dublin
Guinness maker Diageo said on April 13 that it intended to submit applications for delisting its shares from Euronext Paris and Euronext Dublin, RTE reported.

The maker of Johnnie Walker whisky, Tanqueray gin and Don Julio tequila said in a statement that the decision followed a review of the company's trading volumes, costs and administrative requirements related to the listings.

The delisting from Euronext Paris is expected to take effect around May 26, while that from Euronext Dublin is expected to be around May 30.

Diageo, the world's biggest spirits company, said it will continue to list its shares on the London Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange.

It was reported last week that CRH, the largest company on the Irish stock market, plans to quit the Dublin stock exchange to ensure its inclusion in the influential S&P 500 index.

In March, the Dublin-based building materials giant said it intended to move its primary listing to the US.

There it is the largest building materials supplier and it made about 75% of its $5.6 billion in core earnings in that country last year.

Euronext Dublin had hoped CRH would retain its secondary listing in Ireland even as it advanced a plan to move its primary ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Asahi launches Czech beer brand Kozel White in Korea
Czech beer brand Kozel, owned by Japan's Asahi, launched its new lager Kozel White in Korea for the first time in the world to test its product before taking it to other global markets, the company said on April 13.

"I am happy to introduce Kozel White in Korea with much love and respect to the Korean beer market," Matthew Holmes, general manager of Asahi Europe Brand Korea (AEBK ― exclusive local importer of Kozel), said during the press conference held in Seoul.

"We recognize the importance of the Korean market as the global trend says 'if it works in Korea, it works in other parts of the world.' If the product is chosen by Korean consumers, who are picky about quality and services and sensitive to trends, it has a high possibility of success in the global market."

Another reason for Kozel to launch its new product in Seoul first, is that Korea is the fifth largest market by sales in the world. When counting countries that do not own production facilities and only sell imported Kozel beer, Korea is the biggest market in the world.

AEBK, which sells products of other imported beer brands such as Pilsner Urquell and Peroni, showed 26.4 ...More info on site

Barley news Spain: Crops like wheat and barley likely to fail entirely in four regions due to severe drought
Drought now affects 60% of the Spanish countryside, with crops like wheat and barley likely to fail entirely in four regions, the main Spanish farmers’ association said on April 13.

Spain’s long-term drought is causing “irreversible losses” to more than 3.5 million hectares of crops, the Coordinator of Farmers’ and Ranchers’ Organizations (COAG in its Spanish acronym) said in a new report.

Some cereals need to be “written off” in the prime growing regions of Andalusia, Castilla La Mancha, Extremadura and Murcia, and are likely to be lost in the driest areas of three other regions, according to the report. In the wine-growing region of La Rioja, farmers were in the exceptional situation of “having to irrigate cereals … when normally they are never watered,” the association said.

Nuts and vineyards are also struggling, and olives will be badly affected if rain does not arrive in the next few weeks, the report stated. The lack of available water was further impacting the ability of farmers to irrigate corn, sunflowers, rice and cotton, likely leading to reduced sowing of these crops over the summer, it added.

Three years of very low rainfall and high temperatures have put Spain officially into long-term drought, the country’s weather ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Traders report ‘pop’ in feed barley market
After months of declining prices, one trader is now seeing a “pop” in the feed barley market, the Canadian Cattlemen reported on April 13.

Evan Peterson of JGL Commodities at Saskatoon explained that logistics issues caused transportation delays for barley and resulted in feedlots ordering more than they needed last fall — but by the time spring came around, demand quickly fell off.

“Now, deliveries are starting to get caught up, so we’re starting to see a little bit of demand come back,” he said. “Farmers don’t have their marketing hats on right now. They have other plans to get in the fields and start thinking about seeding… They’re not really engaged in selling a lot right now.”

Peterson added that while a large amount of oats in feed rations helped ease barley prices, he expects them to slowly rise going into May.

“After that, we get into a weather game. If we get into April and May and then we start seeing some good rains established in June, I think barley prices will fall off. We’ve got quite a bit of downside risk for June and July heading into new crop,” Peterson said.

The high-delivered bid for feed barley in Alberta was C$9.17 per ...More info on site

Hops news Spain: Spanish brand Ekonoke seeking solution to hop shortage by growing them indoors
In warehouses outside Madrid, twists of hop vines grow under LED lights and close supervision in what is believed to be one of the best ways to futureproof the supply of a key ingredient in beer which is now threatened by climate change, Reuters reported on April 12.

Due to their need for "goldilocks" conditions of long summer days and mild temperatures, hops are traditionally grown in temperate climes found in areas like Germany's Hallertau, the Czech Republic or the north-western United States.

However, research shows more frequent droughts and plagues due to global warming are driving down both yields and quality — a growing headache for the beer industry.

According to growers' associations, US production was down 12 per cent year-on-year in 2022, while German output saw a 21 per cent decline and Czech yields fell by more than 40 per cent due to abnormally hot and dry growing conditions.

Spanish brand Ekonoke is seeking a solution by cultivating the water-intensive vines indoors through renewable-powered hydroponic systems that use nearly 95 per cent less water than traditional outdoor farming.

"We're on a mission to save the world's beer," Ines Sagrario, chief executive and co-founder of Ekonoke, said.

The start-up's 11-member team of agronomists, chemists ...More info on site
