Canada: Traders report ‘pop’ in feed barley market
|
After months of declining prices, one trader is now seeing a “pop” in the feed barley market, the Canadian Cattlemen reported on April 13.
Evan Peterson of JGL Commodities at Saskatoon explained that logistics issues caused transportation delays for barley and resulted in feedlots ordering more than they needed last fall — but by the time spring came around, demand quickly fell off.
“Now, deliveries are starting to get caught up, so we’re starting to see a little bit of demand come back,” he said. “Farmers don’t have their marketing hats on right now. They have other plans to get in the fields and start thinking about seeding… They’re not really engaged in selling a lot right now.”
Peterson added that while a large amount of oats in feed rations helped ease barley prices, he expects them to slowly rise going into May.
“After that, we get into a weather game. If we get into April and May and then we start seeing some good rains established in June, I think barley prices will fall off. We’ve got quite a bit of downside risk for June and July heading into new crop,” Peterson said.
The high-delivered bid for feed barley in Alberta was C$9.17 per

USA, PA: Koehler Brewing Company plans to open in New Castle
|
A new brewery manufacturing and distribution center could be coming to New Castle, the Yahoo News reported on April 11.
On April 5, the city planning commission recommended a conditional use request to house the Koehler Brewing Company at 105 Mahoning Ave., which is located in the M-1 Light Industrial District in the Seventh Ward.
The operation would include brewing, manufacturing, bottling, canning and distribution of products, office spaces and a tasting room.
Koehler currently has a facility at 231 Park St. in Grove City, while the company also operates the Koehler Brewing Pub at 130 Wampum Ave. in Ellwood City.
Currently, the only places to buy Koehler Beer in Lawrence County, besides the Brewing Pub, is at Pete's Uptown Beer & Beverage in Ellwood City, the Crane Room Grille and McBride Beer Store Inc. in Neshannock Township and Beer 4 Less and Pop in New Castle.
The conditional use request now goes to city council for formal approval.
Planning commission member Lawrence Williams feels this would be a good addition to the city.
He feels with Koehler, the planned New Castle Union Station Craft Distillery Inc. on East Washington Street and a planned brewery at The Henry on South Mercer Street, New Castle can become a

USA, NJ: Ross Brewing Co. to open its doors in Middletown on April 14
|
After more than four years in the making, the area's newest brewery will open this Friday, April 14 in the Port Monmouth/Belford section of Middletown, the Patch reported.
The brewery is called Ross Brewing Co. and they are located at 909 Main St. in Port Monmouth
Patch first wrote about them two years ago, when construction first started at the waterfront brewery located right next to the Belford Seafood Co-op.
Ross Brewing is New Jersey's first and only waterfront brewery — you can pull your boat up to the dock, says owner John Ross Cocozza. They have an outdoor beer garden overlooking the water and views of the NYC skyline.
"We really feel like we've discovered an undiscovered gem in Belford," said Cocozza. "We want the rest of the world to see what an amazing waterfront area this is."
Their grand opening will be 1 p.m. this Friday, April 14 and they will have a celebration party all weekend long through Sunday. Come by for live music, 12 beers on tap plus two new ones being unveiled Friday and celebrity bartenders pouring suds — "These will be local celebrity bartenders from movies filmed in this area," said Cocozza. USA, WY: Roadhouse Brewing and Melvin Brewing combine to comprise Pure Madness Brewing Group
|
Roadhouse Brewing Co and Melvin Brewing, two award-winning Wyoming breweries, are thrilled to announce their new parent company, Pure Madness Brewery Group.
This announcement comes on the heels of Roadhouse’s recent purchase of Melvin and its Alpine, WY production facility and tap room. Both breweries have been staples in the state for over a decade, and Pure Madness Brewery Group will combine these two distinct brands into one unified organization.
“The Pure Madness Brewery Group name came from those who have called us mad over the years—but this idea of being ‘mad’ has grown to really represent our approach to brewing and embodies our creativity,” says president of Melvin Brewing’s Board of Directors Zander Doroski.
Colby Cox, co-founder of Roadhouse Brewing Co, adds, “The slogan for Melvin Brewing Company is ‘if your beer is not madness, it’s not beer,’ and for Roadhouse, ‘Live Deep’ represents getting beneath the surface in everything we do. You get pure madness by combining these two companies and their mantras.”
The combination of both breweries, located only 35 miles apart, will produce 50,000 barrels in 2023 and will have the ability to grow to 80,000 barrels in the coming years with new investments that Roadhouse plans to make.

USA, TX: White Rock Brewing Co. already open in Dallas
|
With a menu full of pizza and beer, White Rock Brewing Co. opened on Beckley Avenue in Dallas this week, the Oak Cliff Advocate reported on April 13.
The brewery was started by East Dallas’ own White Rock Alehouse & Brewery, and Oak Cliff and West Dallas residents who visit the new spot may notice a slight difference in the establishments. USA, MI: Flatiron Brewing coming soon to Manistique
|
A new brewery is opening soon in Manistique, the Upper Michigan’s Source reported on April 13.
Co-owner of Flatiron Brewing, Jake Boudreau, says some beers are already on the menu, but more will be coming. The brewery has a four-barrel brewing system.
“To start we already have an IPA, we have a stout - we actually have two stouts - we’re going to have a Belgium and a fruited beer as well as eventually a lager and a hazy IPA,” said Boudreau.
Co-owner Nick Powers says the building is what drew them to their location on Harbor View Drive along the water.
“It was built in the late 1990s. It used to be an event space,” said Powers. “It would host weddings, dances, proms, stuff like that for the whole community. We just really loved the location, and we love how big it is and how spacious the tap room is for activities. The building is one of the main reasons we brought this to this community - we think it’s the perfect fit for a brewery.”
Flatiron is owned by a group of five people, Boudreau, Powers, Mark Osgerby, Ben Pineau and Adam Popour. Now, they’re looking to give back to their community.

USA, CO: MobCraft Beer to close Denver location by end of April
|
MobCraft Beer, a Milwaukee-based craft brewery known for its crowd-sourced beers, announced it will close its Denver location at the end of April, the Milwaukee Business Journal reported on April 13.
The news was shared on MobCraft's Facebook page. MobCraft had opened its second location in September 2022.
MobCraft Beer opened in 2011, originally housed at House of Brews at 4539 Helgesen Drive in Madison. House of Brews has since closed. The brewery moved to the Walker’s Point neighborhood of Milwaukee in 2016 to open its own taproom and brewery location where it has remained since.
In September 2021, the brewery announced significant expansion plans with three new locations planned for Denver; Woodstock, Illinois; and Waterford, southwest of Milwaukee.
The other two locations are still planned at the moment. The Milwaukee Business Journal reached out to MobCraft Beer for additional comment but received no immediate response.
MobCraft's Denver location is at 2403 Champa St. Its last day of operations will be April 23.
In an online letter to MobCraft customers, MobCraft president Henry Schwartz said the closure was due to circumstances including the brewery's "Denver lease and a myriad of unfortunate events." He added that the brewery will continue full operations, including parties and planned events,

South Africa: Heineken pledges to invest R15.5 bln in South Africa expansion
|
Dutch brewer Heineken has pledged to invest R15.5 billion in the expansion of their breweries and beverages manufacturer lines in South Africa, Moneyweb reported.
The investment – which is also linked to its recent R38.22 billion acquisition of the Distell group – was announced at the fifth South African Investment Conference held at the Sandton Convention Centre on April 13.
“This investment underscores our continued belief in the development and sustainability of South Africa. The 2023 SA Investment Conference is an incredible showcase of how private sector investment can help to transform a country and its economy,” Heineken SA managing director Jordi Borrut said in a statement.
“We are honoured to take part in this journey and invest further into South Africa – alongside the region as a whole. We fully support the conference’s overall goals of socio-economic development, creating sustainable jobs, reducing poverty, and driving back inequality,” Borrut aded.
South Africa’s competition authorities gave Heineken the go-ahead to buy Distell – which was once listed on the JSE – but only if Newco, the company which Heineken South Africa and Namibia Breweries are merging under, committed to investing in the local breweries and beverages sector.

South Korea: Oriental Brewery launches second craft beer to boost its presence in the sector
|
Oriental Brewery (OB) has been boosting its presence in the craft beer market going after an increasing number of young consumers who prefer alternatives to generic mass-produced beer, according to industry officials, The Korea Times reported on April 13.
OB is the country's largest brewery with its best-selling beer brand Cass dominating the household market with 42 percent of the market share. However, as the demand for craft beer has been increasing, the brewer saw the need to introduce differentiated products from already-established mass-produced ones.
On April 10, the company introduced its second craft beer product Honey 054, following its successful launch of Ginger 063 in March. Ginger 063 was sold out only a month after its release thanks to an explosive response from consumers.
"Our launch of new craft beer series aims to target young consumers, especially those who have high standards regarding the beer taste. Some consumers are happy with beers like Hite and Cass, but some want something more sophisticated and delicate. Our Honey 054 and Ginger 063 beers are for people who a passionate about beer," an OB official said.
OB is taking a two-pronged approach so as to target mass-produced and craft beer markets separately. It wants to protect

Spain: Crops like wheat and barley likely to fail entirely in four regions due to severe drought
|
Drought now affects 60% of the Spanish countryside, with crops like wheat and barley likely to fail entirely in four regions, the main Spanish farmers’ association said on April 13.
Spain’s long-term drought is causing “irreversible losses” to more than 3.5 million hectares of crops, the Coordinator of Farmers’ and Ranchers’ Organizations (COAG in its Spanish acronym) said in a new report.
Some cereals need to be “written off” in the prime growing regions of Andalusia, Castilla La Mancha, Extremadura and Murcia, and are likely to be lost in the driest areas of three other regions, according to the report. In the wine-growing region of La Rioja, farmers were in the exceptional situation of “having to irrigate cereals … when normally they are never watered,” the association said.
Nuts and vineyards are also struggling, and olives will be badly affected if rain does not arrive in the next few weeks, the report stated. The lack of available water was further impacting the ability of farmers to irrigate corn, sunflowers, rice and cotton, likely leading to reduced sowing of these crops over the summer, it added.
Three years of very low rainfall and high temperatures have put Spain officially into long-term drought, the country’s weather

Spain: Spanish brand Ekonoke seeking solution to hop shortage by growing them indoors
|
In warehouses outside Madrid, twists of hop vines grow under LED lights and close supervision in what is believed to be one of the best ways to futureproof the supply of a key ingredient in beer which is now threatened by climate change, Reuters reported on April 12.
Due to their need for "goldilocks" conditions of long summer days and mild temperatures, hops are traditionally grown in temperate climes found in areas like Germany's Hallertau, the Czech Republic or the north-western United States.
However, research shows more frequent droughts and plagues due to global warming are driving down both yields and quality — a growing headache for the beer industry.
According to growers' associations, US production was down 12 per cent year-on-year in 2022, while German output saw a 21 per cent decline and Czech yields fell by more than 40 per cent due to abnormally hot and dry growing conditions.
Spanish brand Ekonoke is seeking a solution by cultivating the water-intensive vines indoors through renewable-powered hydroponic systems that use nearly 95 per cent less water than traditional outdoor farming.
"We're on a mission to save the world's beer," Ines Sagrario, chief executive and co-founder of Ekonoke, said.

Ireland & France: Diageo to delist from Euronext Paris and Euronext Dublin
|
Guinness maker Diageo said on April 13 that it intended to submit applications for delisting its shares from Euronext Paris and Euronext Dublin, RTE reported.
The maker of Johnnie Walker whisky, Tanqueray gin and Don Julio tequila said in a statement that the decision followed a review of the company's trading volumes, costs and administrative requirements related to the listings.
The delisting from Euronext Paris is expected to take effect around May 26, while that from Euronext Dublin is expected to be around May 30.
Diageo, the world's biggest spirits company, said it will continue to list its shares on the London Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange.
It was reported last week that CRH, the largest company on the Irish stock market, plans to quit the Dublin stock exchange to ensure its inclusion in the influential S&P 500 index.
In March, the Dublin-based building materials giant said it intended to move its primary listing to the US.
There it is the largest building materials supplier and it made about 75% of its $5.6 billion in core earnings in that country last year.
Euronext Dublin had hoped CRH would retain its secondary listing in Ireland even as it advanced a plan to move its primary

South Korea: Asahi launches Czech beer brand Kozel White in Korea
|
Czech beer brand Kozel, owned by Japan's Asahi, launched its new lager Kozel White in Korea for the first time in the world to test its product before taking it to other global markets, the company said on April 13.
"I am happy to introduce Kozel White in Korea with much love and respect to the Korean beer market," Matthew Holmes, general manager of Asahi Europe Brand Korea (AEBK ― exclusive local importer of Kozel), said during the press conference held in Seoul.
"We recognize the importance of the Korean market as the global trend says 'if it works in Korea, it works in other parts of the world.' If the product is chosen by Korean consumers, who are picky about quality and services and sensitive to trends, it has a high possibility of success in the global market."
Another reason for Kozel to launch its new product in Seoul first, is that Korea is the fifth largest market by sales in the world. When counting countries that do not own production facilities and only sell imported Kozel beer, Korea is the biggest market in the world.
AEBK, which sells products of other imported beer brands such as Pilsner Urquell and Peroni, showed 26.4
