USA: 2022 craft beer production on par with 2021, market share by volume grows to 13.2%
|
The Brewers AssociationOpens in new window (BA)—the trade association representing small and independent1Opens in new window American craft brewers—on April 18 released annual production figures for the U.S. craft brewing industry. In 2022, small and independent brewers collectively produced 24.3 million barrels of beer, on par with 2021’s numbers, and craft’s overall beer market share by volume grew to 13.2%, up from 13.1% the previous year.
The overall beer market shrank 3% by volume in 2022, the Association said. Retail dollar value was estimated at $28.46 billion, representing a 24.6% market share and 6% growth over 2021. Sales growth was stronger than volume due to pricing, share shift to smaller brewers—who are more likely to sell onsite and via distributed draught—as well as the continued channel shift back to on-premise, which has a higher average retail value. Craft brewers provided 189,413 direct jobs, a 9% increase from 2021, driven both by growth in the number of breweries and a continued shift to hospitality-focused business models.
“2022 presented small brewers with a number of challenges, including rising operating and material costs and increasing competition, particularly in distribution,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “In this maturing and competitive market,

USA: Brewers Association releases 2022 ranking of top 50 craft breweries in the US
|
United States’ Brewers Association released on April 18 its annual list of the top 50 producing craft brewing companies and overall brewing companies in the U.S., based on beer sales volume. Of the top 50 overall brewing companies in 2022, 40 were small and independent craft brewing companies.
“Breweries that managed to move up the list organically are often those that are adding incremental growth to the category,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association.. “Both beer and craft need to create new occasions and new beer lovers to find growth.”
Yuengling still holds the number one spot in craft brewing and has since at least 2014, followed by Boston Beer Co., whose volume includes Alchemy & Science, Angel City, Dogfish Head, Concrete Beach, and Coney Island brands. Sierra Nevada speaks for itself at 3, followed by Duvel Moortgat (Firestone Walk, Boulevard, Ommegang) and Gambrinus (Shiner & Trumer brands).

USA: Bud Light off-premise sales down in 1st week of conservative-led boycott
|
Sales data is out now showing the first week of the conservative-led boycott of Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Bud Light brand following the world’s largest beer maker’s March Madness activation with Dylan Mulvaney, an influencer who documents her life as a transgender woman, Brewbound reported on April 17.
According to off-premise data from market research firm NIQ (formerly NielsenIQ) for the week ending April 8, packages of Bud Light showed accelerating sales and share declines, while Molson Coors’ competing light lager brands Coors Light and Miller Lite showed “a notable uptick” in sales and share, per Dave Williams of Bump Williams Consulting.
“That being said, while the increased declines for Bud Light were apparent, they were also not completely earth shattering in terms of magnitude,” Williams wrote. “Now, this will be interesting to monitor over upcoming weeks to see if this slide continues, but for now it looks to be rough, but not catastrophic.”
For the week ending April 8, Bud Light posted declines in off-premise dollar sales (nearly -7%), volume (-10.7%) and dollar share (-3.7%). By comparison, for the week ending April 1, Bud Light recorded declines in dollar sales (-1.6%), volume (-6.4%), and dollar share (-0.7%), according to NIQ data, shared by Williams.

The Czech Republic: Vinohradský Pivovar launches a second production facility
|
Microbreweries have become a hot trend in Prague over the past decade, but one of the city's most popular ones may be growing out of that designation. Prague 2-based beermaker Vinohradský Pivovar opened a new brewery in Káraný, northeast of Prague, on Thursday, April 13, thanks to which it will be able to produce significantly more beer, Expats.cz reported.
The new brewery is not only a production facility, but also a taproom where visitors can sample fresh pours and take home cans and kegs. The taps are officially running at Vinohradský Pivovar's new Káraný location this weekend, despite some inclement weather.
"Yesterday we officially opened our new brewery in Káraný," Vinohradský Pivovar wrote on Facebook on April 14. "Thanks to it, we can brew twice as much beer and we continue to brew in Vinohrady too. That means more great beer for everyone!"
The operators of Vinohradský Pivovar chose the location for their new brewery at the site of a former soda factory in Káraný, near Prague, due to the availability of a high-quality water source.
They spent more than CZK 100 million to renovate the premises and acquire new brewing technology, which was manufactured by German brewery maker Kaspar Schulz.
The new brewery will

Ukraine & EU: Poland, Hungary ban Ukrainian grain imports, Bulgaria considering the same
|
Unilateral action on trade by European Union member states is unacceptable, a European Commission spokesperson said on April 16, after Poland and Hungary announced bans on grain and other food imports from Ukraine to protect the local agricultural sector, Reuters reported.
After Russia's invasion blocked some Black Sea ports, large quantities of Ukrainian grain, which is cheaper than that produced in the European Union, ended up staying in Central European states due to logistical bottlenecks, hitting prices and sales for local farmers.
The issue has created a political problem for Poland's ruling nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party in an election year as it has angered people in rural areas where support for PiS is usually high.
"We are aware of Poland and Hungary's announcements regarding the ban on imports of grain and other agricultural products from Ukraine," the spokesperson said in an emailed statement. "In this context, it is important to underline that trade policy is of EU exclusive competence and, therefore, unilateral actions are not acceptable."
"In such challenging times, it is crucial to coordinate and align all decisions within the EU," the statement added.

Slovakia: Slovakia joins ban on Ukraine farm products
|
Slovakia's government banned the import of grains and other farm products from Ukraine on Monday, April 17, but will keep borders open for transit to third markets, Agriculture Minister Samuel Vlcan said.
Vlcan told a televised news conference restrictive measures to ban grain imports imposed by Poland at the weekend had led to the Slovak ban.
"Poland has adopted very strict bans and we thus had to react to protect the Slovak market in those farm products and foods where we have self-sufficiency," he said.
"It is a measure for the protection of the Slovak agro-food sector and mainly the health of consumer," he said.
Slovakia banned the distribution of a batch of Ukrainian grain last week after it detected higher-than-allowed levels of pesticides in the shipment.
Vlcan did not present the full list of farm products and food, but a proposal for Monday's cabinet meeting included wheat, rye, barley, oats, corn, sugar beet and sugar, wine, fruits and vegetables, sunflower seeds, rapeseed, honey, and others.
The government said it would continue to allow transit of Ukrainian grains and other products under an EU initiative to help Ukraine export its production despite the Russian invasion, he said.
Vlcan said Slovakia was pushing for the creation of a

India: Pernod Ricard to challenge Delhi government’s order to deny renewal of sales licence
|
French spirits major Pernod Ricard on April 18 said it will challenge Delhi government's order of denying its application for renewal of sales licence, the Business Today reported.
In a setback to the French spirits major, the Delhi government has rejected its application for renewal of its sales licence on the ground of the ongoing investigations against the company.
However, Pernod Ricard India, which owns brands such as Royal Stag and Blenders Pride, in a statement said it will ''challenge through due process the recent decision'' by the excise authorities to deny this operating licence.
The excise department of the government of the national capital territory of Delhi had last week decided not to renew the sales licence of Pernod Ricard, said official sources.
An application from Pernod Ricard was received in September 2022 and it was not accepted then. Following this, the liquor major went to the court which directed the excise department to formally take a decision. That application has been now rejected, they said.
The decision was taken on the ground of ongoing investigations against the company in matters related to violation of the excise policy of the Delhi government, sources added.
Pernod Ricard has the right to appeal against the order before
