Barley news Canada: Barley supplies projected sharply up in 2022-23
For 2022-23, Canadian barley supplies are projected at 10.6 million tonnes (Mt), up sharply from last year’s record low of 7.9 Mt, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in their April report.

Total domestic use is forecast at 6.0 Mt, up 28% from last year on higher feed and industrial use. Total exports are projected at 3.7 Mt, up 37% from last year. The major international destinations for Canadian barley and products include China, the US, Japan and Mexico.

Carry-out stocks are projected at 0.9 Mt, rising sharply from last year’s record low and marginally above the previous five-year average.

The Lethbridge feed barley price continued to drop over the past month but in a gentle manner. For the crop year to-date, the Lethbridge feed barley price averaged around C$418/tonne (t), versus C$429/t for the same period a year ago. For the entire crop year, the Lethbridge feed barley average price is forecast at C$410/t, down nearly C$20/t from last year’s record high.

According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s March Grain Stocks report, US barley stocks in all positions on March 1, 2023, were higher than a year ago. At 88.7 million bushels (Mbu), US barley stocks were up by 22% from a ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, QB: Microbreweries asking to be allowed to deliver beer to customers
Microbreweries want the right to deliver their beers directly to their customers' homes, so the Association des microbrasseries du Québec (ABQ) is asking the Legault government to change the regulations, CTV News Montreal reported on April 20.

"We want to highlight how nonsensical it is that in 2023, consumers will be able to purchase almost any consumer goods from their homes, but microbreweries don't have access to this distribution channel," said ABQ executive director Marie-Ève Myrand, in an interview ahead of Quebec's Microbrew Week, which begins on April 21.

This is not the first time the association has tried to influence Quebec to obtain this regulatory relaxation. At the height of the health restrictions, the ABQ made this request while its members were hard hit by a drop in traffic.

The Legault government adopted regulatory relaxations in December 2020, allowing restaurants -and by the same token microbreweries that also sell food - to deliver alcohol as long as it is accompanied by a meal.

"The ABQ would like to see the regulations relaxed so that beer can be delivered unaccompanied, as is already possible in other Canadian provinces such as Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario," said Myrand. "I would say that things are evolving ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Flyway Brewing to take over Apple Blossom Brewing Company’s space in Fayetteville
Fayetteville Flyer reported on April 18 that Fayetteville’s Apple Blossom Brewing Company will be closing on Saturday, April 22, and North Little Rock’s Flyway Brewing is said to be taking over the space at 1550 E. Zion Road.

Apple Blossom’s Facebook post said that it will have a new project located right next door.

Matt Foster opened Flyway Brewing in North Little Rock’s Argenta neighborhood at 314 Maple St. in 2015. Over the past eight years it’s developed a solid reputation for its many beer varieties — its Bluewing Berry Wheat is wildly popular — and its lively tap room located a few blocks north of Dickey-Stephens Park.

Rumors of Flyway expanding into Fayetteville have been floating for a while. Additionally, Flyway was one of the businesses announced for the new Breckenridge Village redevelopment.

Brewery news USA, PA: Boal City Brewing Taproom and Beer Garden officially open and off to strong start
Centre County’s newest brewery, Boal City Brewing Taproom and Beer Garden, has officially opened and is off to strong start, Yahoo News reported on April 19.

The brewery, which is located on the Boal Mansion Museum grounds, includes a 1,000-square-foot and seven-barrel brew house and 1,500-square-foot taproom. There is additional outdoor space with picnic tables, other seating and games.

The brewery opened last Wednesday, April 12 for a “soft open” for family and friends, owner Gordon Kauffman said in a phone interview.

“We had great weather and we had great beer and we had a super successful first few days. In fact, the operations ran so smoothly that we ended up just opening it up to the public … on Saturday. We were open, we didn’t have a grand opening or anything like that. We just sort of filtered from the soft to the open to the public on Saturday,” Kauffman said.

They’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback, he said. People not only love the beer, but also the atmosphere and because it’s family and pet friendly with lots of outdoor space, he said.

“We had some fire pits rolling over the weekend, so it was great. It was a lot of fun. The ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Warrior Beer Company planning two-phase opening in Pensacola
One of the most difficult parts of being a veteran is processing what happened after you come home. As the son of a Vietnam veteran, Pensacola resident Gary Hefner understood this firsthand. He watched as his father struggled with civilian life until his death by suicide. Part of Hefner’s life mission is now to support veterans, especially in their struggles with mental health, the Pensacola News Journal reported on April 17.

This is why his new brewery on Pensacola’s west side, Warrior Beer Company at 10605 Sorrento Road, will be the next piece in his mission to give veterans a safe space to have lifechanging conversations.

“I think some of my best conversations and most open conversations have been when you have a couple of beers or cocktails and you just kind of let down some of those walls to talk,” Hefner said.

The space will not only provide a comfortable atmosphere stretching almost 11 acres and an occasional view of the Blue Angels flying by overhead, but will be loaded with high quality wine, seltzers and about 20 house-made beers on tap. He even plans to have a tap wall that will allow people to walk up and serve themselves.

“The idea is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Denver’s Fiction Beer Company opening second brewery in Parker
Denver’s Fiction Beer Company (Fiction) is ready to write its next chapter by opening a second brewery and taproom location in Parker, CO., PorchDrinking reported on April 20.

The iconic book-themed brewery, which has gained notoriety over recent years for its proficiency in brewing Hazy IPAs, Lagers, and specialty barrel-aged beers, slush-styles, and seltzers, is primed to extend its reach by opening a second location at 19523 Hess Rd, Parker, CO. Fiction Beer Company’s Parker location, which is slated to open in May 2023, will once again feature the brand’s iconic signature book bar, a spacious taproom, and will eventually add an outdoor patio space as well.

Additionally, Fiction’s Parker location will also house a six-barrel brewing system, which will be used for experimental small-batch recipes, one-off styles, and will occasionally be used to help supplement Fiction’s current brewing operation.

However, what makes this new outpost so unique is that it will be owned and operated by Fiction employee, Chris Belila, under his company The Beer Bodega. Belila had been a long-time regular of the brewery at their original East Colfax location before joining the team as a part-time bartender in 2017. Earlier this year, Belila left his full-time corporate role to pursue ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Barley exports total 955,751 tonnes in February
Australia exported 955,751 tonnes of barley and 60,604t of sorghum in February, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Of the 41,896t of malting barley shipped in February, Mexico with 63,000t was the destination for almost half, with Vietnam on 4762t the second-biggest market and Singapore on 3370t the third.

Australia shipped 913,855t of feed barley in February, with 277,500t of it bound for Saudi Arabia, and Japan on 150,305t the second-biggest market, followed by Thailand on 129,379t.

China on sorghum was the largest market for February-shipped sorghum with 56,549t, with Taiwan on 2790t the second-biggest market, and The Philippines with 1100t the third.

“As expected, barley exports saw a good recovery on volumes month on month, notching up our second-largest month for the year,” Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said.

“Volumes were supported by a recovery in Saudi shipments, along with a big month for Japan, Vietnam, Jordan and Kuwait.

“Thailand was probably the most notable, with the around 130,000t being its largest month of shipments in years.”

Mr Roache said this showed barley’s relative value has dropped to the level where it is promoting marginal demand versus both corn and feed wheat in Asia.

“This goes against the notion that barley ...More info on site
