|
Guinness Nigeria Plc on April 27 published its Third Quarter report for the period ended 31 March 2023.
The company reported a turnover of N172.478 billion for the 9 months period, up by 8.17% from N159.445 billion reported the previous year.
Profit after tax of N5.866 billion was reported for the period under review, down by 61.61% from N15.278 billion reported the previous year.
Earnings per share of Guinness stands at N2.68, down by 61.61% from the EPS of N6.98 achieved the previous year.
At the share price of N70, the P/E ratio of Guinness Nigeria stands at 26.14x with earnings yield of 3.83%.

UK: Drinks sales up, but beer flat, and cider down – over three weeks to April 22nd
|
Easter holidays and decent weather helped managed UK’s on-trade venues achieve a 7% year-on-year increase in drinks sales over the three weeks to Saturday, 22nd April.
CGA by NIQ’s Drinks Recovery Tracker has shown an 18% increase in the first week of April, followed by drops of 3% and 7% in the next two weeks. Comparisons are skewed by the way Easter dates fell in the calendar in 2022 and 2023, but the three-week comparison provides the most accurate picture of trading over the period.
The 7% growth shows consumers remain eager to drink out in the on-trade. However, with inflation, as measured by the consumer price index, continuing to top 10%, year-on-year sales remained slightly down in real terms over Easter.
In the latest week, sales on Sunday and Monday suffered from comparisons to the key Easter dates in 2022, but they recovered to track 6% ahead on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, before dipping 1% on Saturday amid wetter weather.
Beer sales were flat, while cider and soft drinks were down 10% and 13% respectively. Wine sales were up 3%, continuing a welcome revival of the category, which had a difficult 2022. The spirits category continues to suffer

Nigeria: Nigerian Breweries shareholders ok EUR110 mln loan from Heineken International

Shareholders of Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc have approved a resolution authorising the company to take an intercompany loan of 110 million euros from Heineken International, The Nation Newspaper reported on May 1.
Speaking during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the company in Lagos, Chairman, Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc, Chief Kola Jamodu, said the loan was necessary to help the company address the challenge of foreign exchange (forex) and pay off some of its overdue foreign currency denominated payables.
He said the loan would ensure that there was no disruption in the company’s operations due to a shortage of imported raw materials as its procurement agent would have stopped its services as a result of the overdue payables.
“Forex loss was a major impact on our profitability in 2022. Access to forex continues to be a major issue for NB Plc. The increase in our trade payables has been driven majorly by outstanding payments to our foreign trade partners due to unavailability of forex at the official windows,” Jamodu, who retired, after the April 26 meeting, on April 30, 2023, said.

South Korea: Sale of OB Beer Budweiser Zero suspended due to excessive amount of bacteria

A nonalcoholic beer has been recalled after the amount of bacteria in it was found to exceed the limit, The Business Korea reported on May 2.
The Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) announced on May 1 that it has suspended the sale of OB Beer Budweiser Zero and ordered its recall due to bacterial counts exceeding the standard in some Budweiser Zero products.
OB Beer Budweiser Zero is a nonalcoholic product launched by Budweiser with the cooperation of Oriental Brewery, or OB, in Korea last year.

Australia: Asahi launches its non-alcoholic beer Asahi Super Dry 0.0% in Australia

Asahi Beverages has launched its award-winning, non-alcoholic beer Asahi Super Dry 0.0% in Australia, the Drinks Trade reported on May 3.
Winning a gold medal at the recent World Alcohol-Free Awards 2023 in London, judges described the brew as a “classic lager that’s indistinguishable from a full-strength version.”
Kym Bonollo, Head of International & Craft at Asahi Beverages, said that consumers are seeking options that offer great taste and quality as demand continues to grow for alcohol-free alternatives.
“Developed through extensive research and trials, Asahi Super Dry 0.0% is an elevated option,” she said. “As demand for alcohol-free alternatives grows, we’re seeing more people seek out brewed adult beverages such as non-alcohol beers that don’t compromise on taste or quality.”
Created using the same traditional Japanese techniques and high-quality ingredients as its full-strength counterpart, Bonollo said Asahi is committed to providing more options for consumers wanting moderate their alcohol consumption.

UK: Heineken to invest more than £1.77 mln into upgrading East Midlands pubs
|
Heineken has confirmed plans to invest more than £1.77m into upgrading East Midlands pubs, the Insider Media reported on May 3.
The move forms part of a wider £40m investment in 570 pubs in its Star Pubs & Bars' estate nationwide, which will create about 600 jobs.
One pub that has benefited from this investment is The Peacock in Nottingham, a historic pub once frequented by DH Lawrence. A £247,000 upgrade allowed the pub to reopen after a two-year closure with many of the original features – such as Peacock motif etched windows and original push bells for ordering drinks – retained.
The company has identified a further five sites in the East Midlands for investment. A refurbishment of The White Lion in Beeston is already underway to create two new pubs: The White Lion, a traditional cask ale house – and Blackshale Bar & Kitchen, a contemporary bar specialising in craft ales and modern English cuisine.
The company is also currently in talks with operators to revamp The Salutation, The Pear Tree, Keyworth, The Major Oak, Arnold, and The Blacksmiths, Loughborough.

Ukraine: Barley exports total 2.461 mln tonnes over 10 months of current marketing year
|
Over the 10 months of the current marketing year (from July 1, 2022 to April 30, 2023), Ukraine exported 41.595 million tonnes of cereals and legumes, Ukrinform reported on May 1, citing a press release by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food.
The nation exported 14.385 million tonnes of wheat, 2.461 million tonnes of barley, 17,900 tonnes of rye, and 24.424 million tonnes of corn.
For comparison: from July 2021 to April 30, 2022, Ukraine exported 45.869 million tonnes of grains and legumes, including 18.526 million tonnes of wheat, 5.668 million tonnes of barley, 161,900 tonnes of rye, and 21.211 million tonnes of corn.
In April 2023, 3,619,000 tonnes of grain and legumes were exported from Ukraine (923,000 tonnes in April last year), including 1,387 million tonnes of wheat (127,000 tonnes in April last year), 185,000 tonnes of barley (25,000 tonnes) and 2,042 million tonnes of corn (769,000 tonnes). In April of this year and in April 2022, Ukraine did not export any rye.
Since the start of MY 2022/2023, Ukraine has also exported 127,700 tonnes of flour (in MY 2021/2022, it was 68,600 tonnes).
