Brewery news USA: Number of non-alcoholic beer drinkers up more than 8 times since 2020, report finds
The number of non-alcoholic beer drinkers in the US has increased more than 8x since 2020, with millennial Dads in the Northeast driving the trend, a new report from international market research firm YouGov finds.

YouGov’s “US Non-Alcoholic Beer Report 2023” details who’s drinking non-alcoholic beer, how they spend their time, their diet and fitness habits, and the beer brands they like most.

The report shows that weekly non-alcoholic beer drinkers surged from 0.6% of the US adult population in 2020, to 5.2% in 2023. More than four in five (81%) non-alcoholic beer drinkers are under the age of 44, and 64% are men. More than half (53%) are parents, compared to just 29% of regular beer drinkers.

Drawing on consumer survey data from YouGov Profiles, the report also finds that:

• 65% of non-alcoholic beer drinkers have more than $1,000 in monthly household disposable (vs 45% of beer drinkers) • Nearly three-quarters of non-alcoholic beer drinkers (72%) work out more than once a week (vs. 50% of beer drinkers) • 49% of non-alcoholic beer drinkers describe themselves as meat-eaters or flexitarians (vs 74% of beer drinkers) • 23% of non-alcoholic beer drinkers live in the Northeast (vs 18% of beer drinkers) • 42% ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Glasstown Brewing Company ready to open its doors in Chatham-Kent
A new craft brewery in Chatham-Kent is almost ready to open its doors after nearly two years of anticipation, CTV Windsor reported on May 5.

The Glasstown Brewing Company on James Street in Wallaceburg, On., has been under extensive construction, with its staff preparing for a Victoria Day weekend grand opening.

“You can boat right up to the back door,” said owner Todd Shepley. “Basically tie up and hook up to all the hydro and water or whatever. That's a huge advantage for the boaters as well as anybody coming out of town.”

The new craft brewery is situated in the downtown core along the Sydenham River and boasts up to 18 taps with 8 different beer vats on site.

“We want to be that mini-destination,” Shepley explained. “We're going to have five suites on the second level. There'll be a full wedding venue or a smaller 100 people and less type of thing up there. So we've got a lot of areas in this building that you can use for event spaces, weddings, and parties, and then be able to stay here on site as well.”

Shepley said the goal is to create a brewery district in Wallaceburg that will entice local support along ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: National Black Brewers Association launches in the US
The craft brewing business accounted for nearly $29 billion in beer sales last year, which is nearly one-quarter of the $120 billion beer industry revenue in the United States. But of the nearly 10,000 craft brewers in the country, only about 1% are Black individuals, the Beverage Industry reported on May 8.

A group of like-minded Black entrepreneurs now are setting out ― determined to change this dynamic. At the Annual Craft Brewers Conference this weekend in Nashville, Tenn., they announced the establishment of the National Black Brewers Association. The first-of-its-kind nonprofit organization is committed to the following:

• Promoting the Black brewing community

• Increasing the number of African American individuals in the brewing industry at all levels of production, especially ownership and brew-masters

• Exercising influence by developing and advocating for effective policies

• Fostering historical context, and legacy surrounding African American influence on brewing in the United States.

“The launch of the National Black Brewers Association will create a more inclusive and vibrant beer industry by providing black brewers access to the resources, mentorships, and networks needed to thrive,” said Kevin Johnson, founder of NB2A, in a statement.

To help spearhead the organization, the NB2A has announced the appointment of Kevin Asato, a 30-year veteran of the beverage ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Outskirts Brewing to open in Selah on May 15
“Hard to imagine that we have been working on this place for almost exactly a year now,” said the announcement on social media from The Outskirts Brewing Co. “We are beyond excited to announce that we will be open for business on Monday, May 15th. Can’t wait to see you all down here!”

Outskirts Brewing is located in Selah, Washington, just a few minutes north of Yakima. More than a brewery, it will also offer a full restaurant, cocktails, large outdoor spaces, and entertainment.

Like most other breweries in the Greater Yakima Area, the owners of this one have ties to the hop industry. Expect Outskirts Brewing to offer some hop-forward stuff like pale ales, IPAs, and hop-laden lagers, but also some seasonal, whimsical creations.

Brewery news India & Canada: India’s largest brewpub chain The Brew Estate to enter Canadian market
India’s largest brewpub chain The Brew Estate has announced plans to enter the Canadian market, with a promise to offer “a wide range of craft beers with tempting flavors and a unique experience to Canadian beer enthusiasts”, the Canadian Beer News reported on May 5.

The first location will be opening this summer in Surrey, BC, and the company also has its sights set on establishing outposts in Langley, Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, Calgary, Edmonton, Mississauga, Brampton, Toronto, and Montreal.

“We are thrilled to be launching The Brew Estate in Canada, and we look forward to bringing our unique flavors and brewing techniques to Canadian beer enthusiasts,” said Arundeep Singla, founder of The Brew Estate, in a statement. “Our team has worked tirelessly to create a brewery that showcases the best of Indian craft brewing, and we can’t wait to share it with our new customers in Canada.”

The Brew Estate currently has 12 locations in India, with a 13th soon to open, and a target to have 30 outlets in operation throughout India by 2025.

The Brew Estate Surrey will be located at Unit 107-109, 8910 120 Street, and is expected to open in July.

Brewery news USA, MO: Vine Street Brewing to open in Kansas City as Missouri’s first Black-owned brewery
Just as certain states dominate the craft beer industry — think Vermont and Maine, which have the most breweries per capita — so do certain people. According to a 2021 survey conducted by the Brewers Association, which represents small and independent craft brewers in the U.S., 93.5 percent of the craft brewery owners surveyed were white and 75.6 percent were male, Travel + Leisure reported on May 6.

With this obvious imbalance in the beer industry, it's no surprise that the opening of Vine Street Brewing in Kansas City, Missouri, is making such a splash. The new brewery, which aims to open this month, is the state’s first Black-owned brewery and will join the less than 1 percent of Black-owned breweries in the U.S.

“Beer is an African invention, so when we begin to peel back the layers of what we all thought we knew about beer, we're left with an amazing space to share its diverse history and create new memories," Kemet Coleman, who is opening the brewery with co-owners Woodie Bonds Jr. and Elliott Ivory, told Travel + Leisure. "We believe that being Black-owned expands the culture of beer by offering a fresh perspective and experience that is often ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Smugtown Brewing Co. seeking permission for a brewhouse in Henrietta
Henrietta is known for robust commercial development, but as far as anyone can recall (including town historian Tina Thompson), it's never had a craft brewery, the Democrat and Chronicle reported on May 8.

Said town Supervisor Stephen Schultz, “It seems like for a town this size, how could there not be one?”

There may be soon. Smugtown Brewing Co. is seeking permission to operate a five-barrel brewhouse in a storefront in Town Center Plaza (formerly Suburban Plaza), 2199 East Henrietta Road.

In addition to brewing beer and selling other alcoholic drinks, plans call for offering dine-in and takeout food service, outdoor seating, live music and DJs.

Planned hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week.

Co-owned by plaza owner Joel Chiarenza and Jason Fox, head of brewing at Battle Street Brewery in Dansville, Smugtown has applied for a special-use permit, which will be the subject of a public meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, at Henrietta Town Hall, 475 Calkins Road.

According to the permit application, Smugtown will have 12 beers on tap, a combination flagship and seasonal varieties and beers made in collaboration with other breweries.

Distilled liquors, wines, ciders and beers made in New York state also will be ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Trve Brewing Co. submits permit application for a brewery and tavern in Asheville
Trve Brewing Co., a Denver-based brewer, has submitted a permit application for a new Asheville tavern and brewery, according to city permits, the Asheville Citizen-Times reported on May 8.

The proposed site is 97 Thompson St., a bright blue building on the bank of the Swannanoa River, a former auto shop and garage.

Permit details, submitted in May, propose alteration of the building for "use as a tavern and production of beer," and site plans show a tap room, seating areas and brewery manufacturing floor. Plus, 23 parking spaces in the lot beside the building.

A representative with Trve Brewing declined to comment May 5.

In 2022, Trve Brewing, located on South Broadway in Denver, celebrated 10 years, according to reporting from The Denver Post. Since its opening, it's been "a gathering place for metalheads," and specializes in sours, while also boasting Belgian and farmhouse styles, as well as "clean lagers."

A 2017 news release from Trve said the brewery self-distributes beers, and has worked with out-of-state breweries, including Asheville's Burial Beer Co.

The 0.41-acre property, assessed at $377,200, according to county property records, is owned by Ashebrook Properties LLC.

Also in the East Asheville area of the proposed new brewery is New Origin Brewing Co. and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: HighSide Brewing to relocate brewing operations, open new taproom in downtown Breckenridge
HighSide Brewing, a Frisco favorite for cold craft beer and hot food, announced it will open a new taproom in downtown Breckenridge, relocate its brewing operations to Fairplay and consolidate its Frisco space to just one floor, the Summit Daily reported on May 6.

The changes are expected to take place over the coming weeks, with staff eyeing a mid- to late-May opening of their Breckenridge location, which is set to house 15 taps in a dog-friendly space on the north end of Main Street. Its Frisco space, located on the east end of the town near the marina, is planned to be revamped and reopened to the public in early June.

After opening the brewery in Frisco five years ago, HighSide founder and owner David “Ax” Axelrod said relocating brewing operations to Fairplay made sense.

“We have exponentially more room and we should be able to play around with that,” Axelrod said. “We do a lot of one-off beers that are a couple of kegs, and now we’ll be able to do that in smaller batches.”

With an expanded space, the site will afford head brewer Thomas Larsen about 50% more fermentation space and help the business’s environmental goals by using solar ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Imports of Japanese beer more than double in January-March this year
South Korea's imports of Japanese beer more than doubled on-year in the January-March period, data showed on May 7, marking the highest amount since Tokyo's export curbs against the Asian neighbour in 2019, the Yonhap News Agency reported.

Japanese beer imports came to US$6.62 million in the first quarter, soaring from $2.66 million tallied a year earlier, according to the data compiled by the Korea Customs Service.

The figure was the highest since the $19 million posted in the second quarter of 2019, just before Tokyo announced its export restrictions of key industrial materials to Asia's No. 4 economy.

In July 2019, Japan tightened its regulations on the export of three critical materials used in semiconductors and flexible display production.

This move was widely viewed as a response to the 2018 rulings by the South Korean Supreme Court, which ordered Japanese companies to provide compensation to victims of Japan's wartime forced labor.

The trade row sparked a nationwide boycott of Japanese products, with beer imports diving to just $390,000 in the fourth quarter of 2019.

South Korea's exports of beer products to Japan reached $3.27 million in the January-March period, up 50.4 percent on-year, leading to a trade deficit of $3.34 million in the sector.

Brewery news Namibia: Heineken assures President Geingob over Namibia Bbreweries Limited deal
Namibia’s President Hage Geingob has welcomed Heineken’s takeover of Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL), and has reminded the new controlling shareholders to focus on industrialisation and employment-creation, the New Era Live reported on May 8.

Geingob expressed these sentiments on May 7 during a courtesy call by the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group.

The purpose of the visit was to update Geingob on the O&L and Heineken transaction, and to introduce new NBL MD Peter Simons, as well as Roland Pirmez, Heineken’s president for Africa, Middle East and Eastern Europe, and Dolf van den Brink, Global CEO of Heineken International.

“It is good that you are holding this meeting in public, with no secrets. Even as the private company that you are, I’m pleased that you decided to keep me in the loop.

"Of course, we are interested in job creation, and value- addition to be done here. Let’s move the country forward together in terms of industrialising it and creating employment,” the President said.

Heineken NV, which is a Dutch multinational brewing company, visited the Head of State to break down its decision on its acquisition of NBL and Distell Holdings Limited, and on how this transaction will benefit the local economy. Heineken ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Japan’s Asahi Super Dry beer popularity surges in South Korea
Asahi Japanese beer brand is fast gaining popularity in South Korea. In fact, local retailers are said to be doing everything to get their stocks of the Super Dry draft beer in can, which is currently being imported by Lotte Asashi Liquor Co. Ltd., EconoTimes reported on May 8.

As per The Korea Times, the Asahi draft beers in can is often out of stock in stores due to the very high demand from customers since it was launched on May 1. Officials in the alcohol beverage industry said the high demand was triggered by beer lovers in the country.

The new Asahi draft beer is said to be the first canned beer in the world that, when opened, bursts with a fine foam that tastes like a freshly tap-poured draft beer. This was introduced to the country by Lotte Asashi Liquor, and only a limited number of the canned Asahi Super Dry Draft beer were released upon the launch earlier this month.

The product quickly grabbed the attention of Koreans, especially beer lovers. The product even went viral on social media, and based on the reports, this same thing happened in Japan when it was first released in the market.
