The Czech Republic: Tax on draught beer to soar from 15% to 21%
|
The Czech Republic is due to see the tax on its draught beer soar from 15% to 21% as part of new plans revealed by its government, The Drinks Business reported on May 12.
The ‘austerity package’, which is named ‘Czechia in Shape’, was introduced at a press conference yesterday and is set to see the country with the biggest beer consumption per capita in the world making a raft of radical changes.
The suggestions were, according to local reports, laid out by cabinet officials in a bid to lower the state budget deficit by CZK94bn (€4bn) in 2024 and by CZK150bn in 2025 and would also coincide with VAT on food being lowered from 15% to 12%.
According to statements from the conference, the package additionally ‘includes raising the pension age and hiking corporate and real estate taxes and is a hopeful “cure” to reduce the country’s ballooning public budget deficit, which has risen due to both the pandemic and the cost of living crisis having a knock on effect on the local economy.

USA: Constellation Brands releases Corona Non-Alcoholic
|
Constellation Brands has released Corona Non-Alcoholic, a non-alcoholic brew with the same flavor as the classic Corona beer, but with less than 0.5 percent alcohol by volume and 60 calories per serving, the Rochester Business Journal reported on May 11.
The release of Corona Non-Alcoholic follows a drinking trend that focuses on mindfulness and moderation, the company said in a release.
According to recent data from Horizon Media, 15 percent of U.S. adults 21 and over have chosen to reduce their drinking in the past two years, and 60 percent of them are under 35.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Corona Non-Alcoholic to our beloved family of brands and offer a new way to live La Vida Más Fina that doesn’t sacrifice taste,” said Alex Schultz, vice president of brand marketing, Corona. “This innovation embraces the broadened mindset of our consumers and ensures that we have the perfect beer, no matter the occasion.”
Corona Non-Alcoholic is brewed at the same facility in Mexico as Corona Extra and uses the same brewing process, the company said. It is available across the country in packs of six 12-ounce glass bottles and is line-priced with Corona Extra.

Australia: Malting barley exports triple in March as compared to February this year
|
Australia exported 777,823 tonnes of barley and 255,066t of sorghum in March, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Feed barley shipments for the month totalled 636,233t, down 30 percent from the 911,105t exported in February.
The three largest markets for March-shipped feed barley were Saudi Arabia on 285,171t, Vietnam on 82,358t and The Philippines on 60,036t.
March malting barley exports at 141,590t more than tripled from the February figure of 41,278t, with Vietnam on 32,615t followed by Mexico on 31,733t and Japan on 21,000t the largest markets.
Sorghum shipments surged to reflect new-crop availability, with the March total of 255,066t being almost five times the 53,117t exported in February.
China on 232,996t accounted for 91pc of March sorghum exports, with Japan on 14,360t and Taiwan on 4454t the second and third-biggest markets respectively for the month.
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said feed barley shipments continued strongly, below last month’s huge total but still in line with pace required to meet an expected shipment total of around 8 million tonnes in the year to September.

Russia & China: Russia may export more wheat, barley to China, experts say
|
Russia may export more agricultural products such as wheat and barley to China as Russia is pushing for the construction of a land grain corridor between the two countries, businesses and experts said on May 11.
Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the cabinet and the central bank to study the conclusion of an intergovernmental agreement on the Russia-China New Land Grain Corridor by October 1, Russia’s Sputnik news agency reported on May 11.
It said the measure will help to increase grain production in the Far Eastern, Ural and Siberian Federal districts, as well as the volume of exports to the Chinese market.
Zhao Xiangyu, chairman of Heilongjiang Province-based Liangtai Agriculture Co, told the Global Times that the land corridor for grain transport will boost throughput and add an additional transport route for Russian grain exports to China. Most of the grain exports are shipped to China from the Black Sea.
The development will also boost agricultural trade between China and Russia, Zhao said.
However, Zhao cautioned that there are issues hindering growth such as tariffs, quotas and a lack of transportation capacity.
