Brewery news USA, VA: Three Roads Brewing announces acquisition of Ballad Brewing in Danville
Three Roads Brewing Company is expanding its footprint on the Southside, WSET reported on May 15.

Three Roads has acquired Ballad Brewing on Craghead Street in Danville.

The company has two taprooms, the original in Farmville and a second location in Lynchburg.

The addition of Ballad will add a taproom in Danville and double the brewery’s production by roughly 2,000 barrels.

“We are committed to being the leading brewery in Southside Virginia, and the addition of Ballad helps us achieve that goal. This is a beautiful part of the country with strong communities. We mean it when we say ‘we brew community.’ Our taprooms in Farmville and Lynchburg are known for being welcoming to everyone, from local families and tourists to beer aficionados and civic organizations looking for a casual meeting space. The Ballad Brewing brand is a big part of Danville and will continue to thrive as a part of the Three Roads Brewing family," Chris Sadler, a founder of Three Roads said.

Ballad Brewing opened in 2017 in a large taproom/brewhouse along the Dan River.

Three Roads will retain the Ballad brand, its catalog of beers, and its River District taproom.

Both brands will be distributed in Virginia and North Carolina and will be available ...More info on site

Whisky news USA: Jim Beam launches its 1st single malt whiskey
Jim Beam has long been known as one of the main brands associated with the most American of whiskeys, bourbon. Now, in a move that will throw a heavyweight into a still emerging category of American whiskey, Beam has debuted its very first American single malt whiskey, The Whiskey Wash reported on May 17.

The new offering, known as Clermont Steep American Single Malt Whiskey, is, according to those behind it, the pet project of the younger Freddie Noe, 8th generation master distiller of the Fred B. Noe Distillery on the grounds of James B. Beam Distilling Co campus in Kentucky. As American single malt has yet to have an official standard approved by the TTB, Noe took it upon himself to develop his own guidelines.

To this end Noe and his team hand-selected the American malted barley for the mash (80% Standard Malted Barley, 20% Golden Pilsner Malted Barley), testing some 67 different barley varieties along the way, and used Beam family jug yeast in the natural fermentation process. It’s the same yeast that is used in all Beam products. This was then distilled on a column still and aged for five years in barrels that were toasted, then quickly charred ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Fate Brewing Co. to open new location in central Phoenix
With its latest expansion, Valley favorite Fate Brewing Co. is bringing its popular pints to central Phoenix, the Phoenix New Times reported on May 12.

Fate started 11 years ago in North Scottsdale. It didn't take long before popularity rose and the company moved to a larger space in South Scottsdale. As demand grew, Fate did as well, and in 2019, the brewery opened another location in Tempe.

“We put a lot of time and effort into the small details to make sure our guests can count on Fate as a place to kick back and spend time with people they enjoy,” owner Steve Ellefson says.

Fate is expanding once again, opening its newest location in Phoenix along Seventh Street right off the Grand Canal Trail, a popular spot for biking and dog walking.

“Our Phoenix location will feature a seamless indoor-outdoor layout, a family-friendly atmosphere, as well as an expansive, and pet-friendly, gaming patio," Ellefson says.

Ellefson says many aspects that customers know and love from Fate's other locations will remain the same. The company saw an opportunity to expand to an area that is quickly developing and couldn't pass it up, he says.

"As with our other two locations, our main goal was to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Harper Lane Brewery to become Middleborough’s first brewery thanks to a state loan
The state’s economic development finance agency says one of its loans will help establish the first brewery and taproom in Middleborough, although it won’t disclose the specific terms of the loan, Yahoo News reported on May 13.

MassDevelopment announced on May 11 that its $276,250 equipment loan to Harper Lane Brewery will help the limited liability company overseeing it to buy a canning line, kegs, a keg washer, tanks, refrigeration, and wall-mounted HVAC units.

“Small businesses are the heart of Massachusetts’ downtowns and commercial districts,” Secretary of Economic Development Yvonne Hao, who serves as chair of MassDevelopment’s Board, said in a statement. “MassDevelopment’s low-cost financing tools provide these businesses with the capital necessary to buy equipment or invest in real estate, spurring new jobs, economic activity, and positive growth for cities and towns across the state.”

Harper Lane Brewery on Wareham Street in Middleborough will also feature an outdoor beer garden, MassDevelopment said, and the taproom is expected to open this summer. The brewery was established in 2018 by Michael Pasalacqua, who leases space as a tenant brewery at Independent Fermentations Brewing Company.

MassDevelopment, which provides tax-exempt bonds, loans, and guarantees for companies, says it has helped many breweries, including Artifact Cider, Brockton Beer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ND: Drift Prairie Brewing Co. to hold soft opening in Jamestown
For the founders of Drift Prairie Brewing Co., it’s not just about creating beer. It’s also about good food and being a family-friendly place where you can stay all day if you’d like to connect with others, hang out, converse or play a game, The Jamestown Sun reported on May 17.

“For us and our perspective, we want to be able to create a space that provides for community and conversation, that the consumption of what we’re creating brings about community,” said co-owner Nick Bruns. “That the space is not just about the consumption of alcohol but it’s about those who you’re with.”

To foster that, they have a large capacity for seating and gathering; games that people can use, and a designated area for children to play while the adults spend time together.

“A gathering space, coffee shop vibe almost more than a bar vibe for sure is what we’re going for and what we’re trying to create with how we set everything up and what we provide,” said Emma Kleingartner, one of the co-owners.

Six households are founding owners of Drift Prairie Brewing Co. and there are also outside investors, mostly from Jamestown, Bruns said.

Drift Prairie Brewing Co. will have a soft ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Wagon Wheel Brewing Co. already open in Oxnard
Using pieces of history, a brewery is bringing excitement back to a part of Oxnard once known for its western-themed attractions, the Ventura County Star reported on May 15.

The Wagon Wheel Brewing Co. restaurant and brewery opened to a full house earlier this month in north Oxnard near Highway 101.

The menu boasts about 15 beers brewed on site and a variety of dishes made from scratch.

“A lot of passion and love has gone into opening this, as well as the food and beverages,” Chef James Bailey said on May 12.

The brewery has been three years in the making and is part of the Wagon Wheel development — a 62-acre community that will have 1,500 apartments and homes by 2025.

The area was known as the Wagon Wheel Junction throughout the second half of the 20th century and served as a rest stop for motorists traveling between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

Designed by Martin V. “Bud” Smith, an Oxnard developer who died in 2001, Wagon Wheel Junction hosted a number of attractions. There was a small amusement park, bowling alley, skating rink, restaurants and a motel.

While the former buildings are now gone, bits of the old Wagon Wheel days ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Terra Nova Beer Co. aiming for a June debut in Asheville
A new local brewery opening this summer is preparing to make a beer garden oasis out of a gravel parking lot, the Asheville Citizen-Times reported on May 11.

Terra Nova Beer Co. is aiming for a June debut at 101 South Lexington Ave. in the South Slope Brewing District.

The extensive, multistage renovation plan will create a greenspace that flows from inside the taproom to the open-air beer garden. The design reflects the brewery’s name and inspiration.

Terra Nova Beer Co. is opening in the former location of Bhramari Brewing. The brewery's parent company has taken over to create a separate entity with new investment dollars. And a new leadership team and staff are building the business from the ground up.

"It's a special group of people, and that's part of my experience from my last company (Galaxy Digital) was building something that was a culture that's really healthy and it all starts with that core group of people, and we have been blessed to find a core group of people that are all on the same page," said Doss Church, director of operations for Terra Nova and former chief executive officer and founder of Galaxy Digital, a software company in Asheville.

Brewery news USA, NY: Southpaw Brewing Co. just weeks away from opening
Southpaw Brewing Co. is inching closer to opening in Yaphank’s new development The Boulevard, a mix-use property along William Floyd Parkway, the Greater Long Island reported on May 14.

On April 22, the brewery announced on Instagram that it’s “just weeks away” from opening.

The brewery — the idea of cousins James Economou and Thomas Neidhart, along with Thomas’s sons TJ Neidhart and Michael Neidhart — promises to raise the bar on the local beer scene.

Economou is a longtime college football coach and former professional offensive lineman. Thomas is the owner of Southpaw Construction Company. So why a brewery?

A few years back, Thomas approached his cousin about opening a bagel shop, but he turned it down to take a coaching gig at Campbell University in North Carolina. “I said, as a joke, ‘If you are really interested in opening a business together, let’s do a brewery.'” And then Economou left.

Then the pandemic hit. “It just felt the right time to move back home,” said Economou. “I just wanted to be around family.” That’s when the idea started heating up about going into business together.

Having traveled the country for football, the Coram native noticed something on the island. Outside of Long Island, breweries ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KY: Freedom Brewery and Pickleball Ranch breaks ground in Florence
Officials gathered on land just off Freedom Way in Florence to break ground this week for the Freedom Brewery and Pickleball Ranch, NKyTribune reported on May 14.

The four-acre site, which is just behind the Florence Y’Alls and Thomas More Stadium, will be home to a 12,000 square foot indoor/outdoor brewery, brew pub, and tap room, as well as a six court pickleball facility.

“The Freedom Brewing Company and Pickleball Ranch @FBC look forward to working closely with the City of Florence and the Florence Y’alls to create a true entertainment district gem and a one-of-a-kind social and lifestyle experience for fans of brewery and craft beer, baseball, pickleball, and live entertainment,” said Freedom Brewing Company Managing Partner Pete Robinson.

Robinson and Matt Kappers are the main players in this project, although there are other investment partners, according to Florence Community and Business Development Director Josh Hunt.

A brew-pub style restaurant will be featured in the brewery and taproom, and patrons will be treated to rooftop views into Thomas More Stadium and the adjoining Pickleball Ranch.

There will be a finished lower level patio that will offer a year-round outdoor entertainment space, an excellent view of the pickleball games, and an outdoor concert stage for ...More info on site

Brewery news Austria: Future uncertain for Austria’s only Trappist brewery
The last four monks staying at the Austrian abbey of Engelszell will soon leave the premises. Engelszell is home to Austria’s only Trappist brewery, leaving its future ridden with uncertainty, The Brussels Times reported on May 13.

The resident monk community announced on May 12 that it is no longer able to maintain a Trappist life within the monastery. The decision to dissolve was taken in consultation with the Cistercian Trappist order.

The fate of the buildings, the church and the production of beer and liqueurs is uncertain. They are looking for a “suitable, preferably Catholic” solution.

The time frame for the closure as such is also not known. According to Austrian media, it could take another two years before the monks leave the premises for good. The abbey also had about 10 staff members.

Stift Engelszell was founded in 1925. A brewing operation had been launched there in 2012 in collaboration with Peter Krammer, who runs the family brewery Hofstetten, located in Sankt Martin, some 30 kilometres from the abbey.

“We had interrupted the collaboration around 2019-2020, but the abbey had its own brewmaster since then,” Peter Krammer told Belga agency, who remains very surprised by the closure announcement.

The production of the beers is ...More info on site
