Brewery news USA, NC: AB InBev sells Appalachian Mountain Brewery to its original owners
Appalachian Mountain Brewery’s original crew is back in control, vinepair.com reported on May 19.

Founders Nathan Kelischek and Chris Zieber have purchased the North Carolina brand back from Anheuser-Busch, according to a press release. Anheuser-Busch acquired the growing craft brewery in 2020, partnering with the founding pair to launch national partnerships and expand distribution.

Financial details of the recent deal were not disclosed.

The craft brewer partnered with the Craft Brew Alliance (CBA) in 2014 to “increase production and expand distribution across the Carolinas.” CBA acquired the brand in 2018, and AMB became part of Anhesuer-Busch’s portfolio when CBA expanded its AB partnership in 2021.

“We’re grateful to have spent the last two years as active founders within A-B’s craft portfolio and want to thank the people at A-B, including our fellow craft brewery founders, for the support, collaboration, and friendship that we’ve enjoyed during our time together,” Kelischeck and Zieber said in the release.

The AMB founders are shifting their strategy to focus on the brand’s new taproom in North Carolina, as well as growing its local brewery team. The brand remains headquartered at its original brewery in Boone, N.C., and distribution will continue throughout North and South Carolina.

It’s surprising to see a small ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: The River Arts District Brewing Company to open its doors in Asheville on May 20
A veteran brewer is striking out to bring something new to Asheville’s flourishing beer industry, the Citizen Times reported on May 19.

On May 20, owner Robert Lemery will welcome guests to The River Arts District Brewing Company, opening at 13 Mystery St. in Asheville.

The brewery will debut with a grand opening party from noon-10 p.m., during Asheville Beer Week, with an event that includes an arts and crafts market, live music, and food for purchase from Queen’s Island Cuisine food truck.

Also, guests may taste the inaugural brews.

Asheville and the surrounding communities have a significant number of established breweries, but Lemery sees room for RAD Brewing Co. in the industry. And he aims to focus on local patrons on a more intimate level.

“The way I phrase it is ‘butts and seats.’ There are more butts coming than there are seats to put them in,” Lemery said. “There’s always space for a brewery. I don’t think the market is saturated. I think we can all coexist. However many customers come in here per day aren’t going to affect the other businesses whatsoever. There are more butts coming, and I’m just going to give them a few extra seats to sit in.”

Brewery news USA, FL: Wolf Branch Brewing Co. officially opens in Leesburg
Wolf Branch Brewing Co. has officially opened in Leesburg, marking its third location in Lake County. This is the largest location to date, with the others located in downtown Mount Dora and downtown Eustis, the Daily Commercial reported on May 17.

“It’s kinda cool because I worked with the City of Leesburg 17 years ago and now, I’m back,” owner Jose Villafana said. “We’re so excited to be here.”

Jose runs the breweries with his wife, Whitney, and his parents, Jose Sr. and Dailie. He also boasts about his great team of bartenders and staff.

The new location is larger than the other two combined, which allows for a five-barrel brewing system with up to six different beers brewing at a time.

Jose is an Army veteran who enlisted for the adventure. He was deployed to Afghanistan and twice to Iraq, earning the Bronze Star, jump wings and Pathfinder designation. Between tours, he graduated from the University of Florida.

After he got his fill of adventure, he returned home and wanted to open his own brewery. After talking it over with his family, they were all in with him.

“We all started doing the research and started experimenting,” Jose said. “I went to brewing school and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Eagle River Brewing to open its doors in Gypsum on May 19
Get ready, Eagle County, there’s a new brewery coming to Gypsum. The Eagle River Brewing Company will open its doors and taps on Friday, May 19 with Grand Opening celebrations happening throughout the weekend, the Vail Daily reported on May 18.

Like many good ideas, Eagle River Brewing Company was hatched over a few beers. Cody Scott and Tom Hail were on Scott’s porch in Eagle. Scott said, “should we do a brewery?” and Hail immediately said, “I’m in!”

Scott and Hail met at the Sandlot Brewery, the first brewery to be located inside a Major League Baseball stadium at Coors Field in Denver. Hail was the brewer and Scott was an intern. Scott was between graduating from college and enlisting in the Marines.

During Hail’s almost three-decade tenure at Sandlot Brewery, he won several awards and accolades for his brewing skills, including 48 Great American Beer Festival awards.

“During one of the Great American Beer Festivals, Tom won seven medals in one year, which is a lot, but the fact that the Sandlot is owned by a large brewery (with Coors Field being a part of Molson Coors) made people mad, so they changed the rules and it took him five years, but ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Springfield Brewing Company expanding with a new production facility in Willard
Springfield Brewing Company is expanding, with a new production facility and tasting room to open in Willard by next spring, the Springfield News-Leader reported on May 18.

The brewery announced on May 18 that the new location will be in the Ozark Greenways, Inc. mural building, along the Frisco Highline Trail. For fans of the vibrant mural on side of the building, no need to worry. The mural will remain.

"Our taproom will provide both residents and trail users with a unique venue where the community can gather, refresh, and relax," a Facebook post by the brewery states. "The space will feature a large tasting room with indoor and outdoor seating, as well as room for our brewers and distillers to experiment with wild fermentations and small-batch spirits from our Ty Iechyd Da Distillery."

Brewing and Production Manager Brian Allen said the company anticipates the new Willard expansion will provide a less formal experience than the establishment in downtown Springfield, with more bar service and less of a food presence.

Springfield Brewing Company is traditionally known for its European and British-styles, Allen said. With the addition of the new production facility, the brewery has plans to expand its offerings, experimenting with more Belgian influences ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Leland Brewing Company getting ready to open ‘in the next couple of weeks’
Breweries in the Cape Fear area seem to be popping up everywhere with another one set to open soon in Leland, WWAYTV3 reported on May 16.

Leland Brewing Company, which was established in 2020, has been in the making for a few years now. It was formally known as 7twenty6 Brewing Company.

The brewery is set to have its own beers on tap once their beer cycle is finished, along with food trucks, an eventual food kiosk and an outdoor space for entertainment.

A variety of beers are set to be available once they are tested and developed.

Mark Said, co-owner of Leland Brewing Company, gave some insight on what to expect and when the doors will be open.

“We are excited to open in the next couple weeks and bring our families, your families, the communities to join us here for some great beverages, eventually some food and just a good time.” Said explained.

Said says he and his team are very excited about finally getting close to opening. The brewery is located right next to Leland Town Hall off of Old Fayetteville Road.

Brewery news USA, CA: HenHouse Brewing Co. expanding to Marin
One of the North Bay’s most popular breweries is expanding to Marin, the San Francisco Chronicle reported on May 19.

HenHouse Brewing Co., best known for its cult-level brew Big Chicken double IPA — released just once a year, like Russian River’s Pliny the Younger — will open a third taproom in Fairfax on June 9.

The new location (765 Center Blvd., Fairfax) will be HenHouse’s first outside of Sonoma County and the first with a kitchen. The brewery is taking over the former home of longtime local favorite Iron Springs Pub & Brewery, which closed at the end of 2021 after a 17-year run.

“Keeping some of that history alive by keeping the space going, the community going, is something we really believe in and think is important,” said co-founder Collin McDonnell. “Marin has always been really, really good to us. Back when we were self-distributing, three of our biggest draft accounts were in Fairfax.”

HenHouse’s main brewery is located in Santa Rosa, and it has a library-themed taproom in Petaluma, specializing in bottle-conditioned and barrel-aged beers. The Marin brewery, named the West County Pub, will have 19 beers on draft; about half will be brewed on-site and available through ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Warrior Brewing Co. planning a nano brewery in historic Duluth Armory
Warrior Brewing Co. 's co-owners, Matt Caple and Ben Gipson, have expanded their Lincoln Park taproom and also plan to open a nano brewery in the historic Duluth Armory on the horizon, the Duluth News Tribune reported on May 18.

Having surpassed their original five-year business plan after just two years from opening, the veteran-owned and operated brewery strives to continue providing an engaging space for its patrons, said Caple.

"We're constantly making sure we don't put the cart in front of the horse, so to speak," he said. "Our taproom expansion is paramount to us continuing to grow here at this location."

Warrior Brewing is located at 2711 W. Superior St. in the building owned by King Chris and King Dan revocable trusts, and is managed by King Properties Duluth .

The new taproom space was previously occupied by CPL Imaging , which recently relocated to 2301 W. Superior St.

At their distributors' request, Warrior Brewing increased its production capacity to meet the growing demand for their product.

Gipson added: "There are still a lot of people knocking on our door trying to get us to go bigger."

As they expanded, two 620-gallon (20-barrel) tanks and two 930-gallon (30-barrel) tanks were added to the mash tun, ...More info on site

Brewery news Turkey: Beer makers’ shares slump as election results don’t bring awaited changes
For a few days last week, the idea that a change in government may lead to a loosening of restrictions on alcohol sales gave a big lift to shares of Turkey’s top beer maker. Sunday, May 14th’s election result changed all that, Bloomberg reported on May 16.

In the two days since President Recep Tayyip Erdogan garnered a comfortable lead after the first round of polling, Anadolu Efes Biracilik ve Malt Sanayii AS has given back all of the previous week’s 22% gain. It’s been a similar story for another listed beermaker, Turk Tuborg Bira ve Malt Sanayii.

According to Burak Isyar, head of research ICBC Securities in Istanbul, some traders had been betting on relaxed rules on alcohol sales in the event that opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu won the election. The “psychological optimism seems to be melting away as the expectations change,” he said.

Under Erdogan’s watch, some municipalities cracked down on venues with outdoor seating areas that spilled into the streets, transforming once popular night spots. Among other measures, promotion of alcohol has been banned, retailers forbidden from displaying alcoholic products where they would be visible from outside, and taxes on alcohol consumption have increased.

Brewery news UK: Carlsberg sells London Fields Brewery to pub company Grace Land Group
Carlsberg has sold London Fields Brewery to north London pub company Grace Land Group for an undisclosed sum, The Drinks Business reported on May 18.

Grace Land Group, which was founded in 2009, owns six north London pubs, including the Black Heart, Earl of Essex, Kings Arms, The Axe, and Red Hand, is set to relaunch the brewery as “Saint Monday” and will continue to brew beers at the production site.

Speaking to the drinks business about the deal, a spokesperson for Carlsberg Marstons Brewing Company (CMBC) said: “We are pleased to confirm the sale of London Fields Brewery to Grace Land Group. We wish Grace Land Group every success with their plans to relaunch the brewery as Saint Monday, which we look forward to seeing develop and continue the brewing legacy of this iconic site.”

London Fields Brewery, which was originally founded in 2011, was the first commercial brewery to open in Hackney since the 19th century and was originally put up for sale in March 2016, following the arrest of owner Julian De Vere Whiteway-Wilkinson on suspicion of fraud before being bought by Carlsberg in 2017.

Upon acquiring London Fields, Carlsberg set about running the business in a joint venture with New ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Andhra Pradesh hit with beer shortage amid peaking summer
There is shortage of beer when summer is peaking, a time when youngsters prefer this alcoholic beverage to beat the heat, which has gone up in Andhra Pradesh during the last few days. This has also led to a drop in revenue to the state exchequer, the Deccan Chronicle reported on May 17.

The main reason being attributed to shortage of beer is lack of supply from United Breweries Group, which brews the Kingfisher brand. Beer production has been badly hit after workers at its brewery went on strike from April 1. Thus, this brand of beer is not available with AP State Beverages Corporation Limited, which supplies the beer through government’s retail liquor outlets.

AP monthly consumes 10–12 lakh cases of beer of all brands, with Kingfisher holding the major share. This means nearly 40,000 cases get consumed every day. However, at present, only 30,000 cases of beer are available.

A look at government records on beer sales shows that in April 2023, 10,59,391 cases of beer had been consumed, the sale value being 248.04 crore. In April 2022, nearly 13,03,716 cases of beer worth 280.17 crore had been consumed.

About 5,56,573 beer cases had been consumed from May 1 to May 16 ...More info on site

Brewery news Cambodia: Government bans sale, consumption of alcohol during National Election
Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism has issued a statement instructing entertainment establishments such as karaoke clubs and bars to suspend their business for two days during the National Election, the Khmer Times reported on May 19.

These establishments were told to shut down on July 22, the day before the election, and July 23, the election day.

The statement from Ministry of Tourism on Tuesday said: “Owners or managers of karaoke businesses, entertainment clubs, bars, discos, and beer gardens in the capital and provinces must suspend business activities on July 22 and 23.”

“All tourism service owners or managers can provide catering services but must suspend alcohol sales,” the statement added.

Minister of Tourism Thong Khon said that to prevent problems that alcohol consumption can cause, it will be temporarily banned during the National Election.

He asked the directors of capital and provincial Departments of Tourism to instruct owners and managers of tourism businesses to follow the instruction.

“Owners and managers of the tourism businesses must abide by this directive,” he said.

Funcinpec spokesman Nhoeun Raden expressed support for the government’s temporary two-day ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol during the election.

“If alcohol is consumed then that can cause violence,” Raden said. “Please do not drink ...More info on site
