Brewery news USA: Heineken rumoured to be eyeing opportunities while Bud Light sales decrease
In the wake of AB InBev’s Bud Light brand falling from favour, Heineken is rumoured to be getting behind promoting Heineken Silver in the US, The Drinks Business reported on May 23.

According to reports, Heineken had seen an opportunity in the US market’s light beer category prior to the recent backlash against its Bud Light promotion with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney and is set to move quickly this year to win over US consumers.

Heineken USA’s chief executive Maggie Timoney told Reuters that there is room for the Heineken Silver brand to grow among “premium” lagers and that Heineken plans to win over Americans with more than two million free samples this year, most notably during its partnership with the US Open tennis and as title sponsor of the Las Vegas Formula One Grand Prix

The troubled AB InBev, which still currently dominates the light beer category with Bud Light, has seen US sales of the beer brand drop more than 20% since it faced criticism in April. To reduce the backlash, the company is also reported to be buying back unsold Bud Light beers which have passed their expiry date, following news it has also lost its top LGBTQ+ rating from ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Ireland passes legislation requiring health warnings on alcohol products
Ireland passed legislation on May 22 that will make it the first country in the world to require health warnings on alcohol products. The warning labels are expected to detail the dangers of drinking while pregnant, related cancer information, and the risks of liver disease from drinking, the Seeking Alpha reported.

The new legislation, which was signed into law by health minister Stephen Donnelly, also includes a requirement that alcohol warnings be posted at pubs and restaurants where alcohol is served. However, it will be a few years before any impact may be felt in the industry, with the new legislation not scheduled to go into effect until May of 2026.

"This law is designed to give all of us as consumers a better understanding of the alcohol content and health risks associated with consuming alcohol," noted Donnelly. Irish health department officials have also maintained the regulations only bring alcohol products in line with requirements for food packaging.

The Ireland alcohol warning plan has already seen protests from Italy, Spain and six other EU member states due to the potential issues it could create. Outside the EU, complaints about the new requirement have also been filed with the World Trade Organization by UK, ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand: Brewer-turned-politician fighting to overhaul Thai beer market’s duopoly
A beer-loving lawmaker in Thailand once arrested for illegal brewing is hoping his party's election win can give him a long-awaited shot at breaking up a $14 billion alcohol duopoly of two of the country's wealthiest families, Reuters reported on May 23.

Brewer-turned-politician Taopiphop Limjittrakorn has been fighting to overhaul strict regulations for years, taking on Boon Rawd Brewery and ThaiBev, which have long had a stranglehold on the production of alcohol.

He is a member of the progressive Move Forward party, which is pushing to form the next government after winning the most seats in a May 14 general election. It reached an agreement on Monday with prospective coalition partners that include measures to "abolish monopolies and promote fair competition in all industries, such as alcoholic beverages".

Although the single-largest party, the prospect of a Move Forward-led government is still uncertain due to a built-in constitutional provision that favours military-linked parties.

"The progressive alcohol bill is not only a bill, it is a political project," said Taopiphop, 34, who was re-elected in a Bangkok district, in an interview at his bar.

"Now, I'm gathering all the stakeholders in this policy to make it happen as smoothly as I can because I realise that we ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Feed barley bids continue to hold steady
Feed barley bids in Western Canada continue to hold steady, while attention in the market turns to the new crop going into the ground, the Alberta Farmers Express reported on May 20.

“There currently is an uptick in demand for quick movement presenting good opportunities for producers ready to sell,” Alberta grain brokerage Agfinity said in a note to clients.

“However, many feedlots have indicated that they are in decent shape and covered into new crop, some due to switching over to corn until harvest.”

Bids in the C$400-C$410 per tonne range can currently be found for May-June delivery into the Lethbridge feedlot alley in southern Alberta. For the new crop, Agfinity noted producers were showing some caution in contracting due to dry seeding conditions.

On the export front, year-to-date Canadian barley exports through 41 weeks of the 2022-23 marketing year of 2.6 million tonnes compare with 1.8 million at the same point the previous year. However, only 20,000 tonnes left the country during the week, according to the latest Canadian Grain Commission report.

Meanwhile, feedlots continue to bring corn from the U.S., with the potential for more imports likely to keep a lid on upside in the Canadian feed market even if any problems ...More info on site
