Brewery news USA: Heineken rumoured to be eyeing opportunities while Bud Light sales decrease
In the wake of AB InBev’s Bud Light brand falling from favour, Heineken is rumoured to be getting behind promoting Heineken Silver in the US, The Drinks Business reported on May 23.

According to reports, Heineken had seen an opportunity in the US market’s light beer category prior to the recent backlash against its Bud Light promotion with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney and is set to move quickly this year to win over US consumers.

Heineken USA’s chief executive Maggie Timoney told Reuters that there is room for the Heineken Silver brand to grow among “premium” lagers and that Heineken plans to win over Americans with more than two million free samples this year, most notably during its partnership with the US Open tennis and as title sponsor of the Las Vegas Formula One Grand Prix

The troubled AB InBev, which still currently dominates the light beer category with Bud Light, has seen US sales of the beer brand drop more than 20% since it faced criticism in April. To reduce the backlash, the company is also reported to be buying back unsold Bud Light beers which have passed their expiry date, following news it has also lost its top LGBTQ+ rating from ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Feed barley bids continue to hold steady
Feed barley bids in Western Canada continue to hold steady, while attention in the market turns to the new crop going into the ground, the Alberta Farmers Express reported on May 20.

“There currently is an uptick in demand for quick movement presenting good opportunities for producers ready to sell,” Alberta grain brokerage Agfinity said in a note to clients.

“However, many feedlots have indicated that they are in decent shape and covered into new crop, some due to switching over to corn until harvest.”

Bids in the C$400-C$410 per tonne range can currently be found for May-June delivery into the Lethbridge feedlot alley in southern Alberta. For the new crop, Agfinity noted producers were showing some caution in contracting due to dry seeding conditions.

On the export front, year-to-date Canadian barley exports through 41 weeks of the 2022-23 marketing year of 2.6 million tonnes compare with 1.8 million at the same point the previous year. However, only 20,000 tonnes left the country during the week, according to the latest Canadian Grain Commission report.

Meanwhile, feedlots continue to bring corn from the U.S., with the potential for more imports likely to keep a lid on upside in the Canadian feed market even if any problems ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Glasstown Brewing Company opens in downtown Wallaceburg
A much-anticipated business in downtown Wallaceburg officially opened its doors Saturday, May 20 — and celebrated the moment with a special delivery, the Chatham Daily News reported.

With Todd Shepley, Glasstown Brewing Company president and founder, behind the wheel of an antique truck, he made a keg drop-off to the Royal Canadian Legion, while following behind the pipe band.

“It’s been a year and a half trying to get here, but we did it and we’re all excited for the day,” he told The Daily News beforehand.

Shepley was inspired to launch the business when visiting the U.S. and seeing all the waterfront breweries.

He purchased the property at 331 James St. to help make that a reality in his community.

As for the delivery to the legion, he said it allows the business to pay tribute to veterans, noting his grandfather served in the Second World War.

Glasstown will initially offer a half-dozen craft beers brewed in-house by head brewer David Draper. Shepley said there will be about 15 different varieties later on.

There is also a fully serviced tap room, chef-run kitchen and a large patio alongside the Sydenham River.

“We had to start as soon as we could with permits and such, so we were ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Construction of North Pillar Brewing underway in Waukesha
Construction is underway at 212 E. North St., in Waukesha the future home of North Pillar Brewing. Business owners Ethan Boehm and Braden Hocking are looking forward to honoring the history of the building, GMToday.com reported on May 20.

"That location on 212 E. North St. was a brewery, Weber Brewing Company, that started over 150 years ago. So, it’s sort of hallowed grounds," Boehm said. "We went and looked at it and saw the potential of it. It is a very open space, allowing us to put our touch on it. The challenge has been how do we approach it and not strip away what the bones of this place is, while still making it very comfortable and accommodating and what we had envisioned."

Breweries in the building date back to the 19th century. In 1857, a man by the name of Henry Meyer opened a brewery on North Street before going bankrupt and selling it to Stephen Weber in 1862. The brewery remained in the Weber family for nearly a century.

According to the historical marker outside the building, the Weber Brewery had many different names during its operation, including West Hill Brewery, Bethesda Brewery, Weber Brewing Company and Weber Waukesha ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Salt Road Brewing launches in Fort Collins
It was a cool rainy spring day in Fort Collins that marked the grand opening of the beer-centric city’s newest brewery. Dubbed Salt Road Brewing, it is tucked away off of Walnut Street in the bustling downtown area and is located in an alleyway once home to Prost Brewing Co., the Thirst Colorado reported on May 23.

For those who’ve been, the smell of tacos from Illegal Pete’s lingers in the air. Brewer and co-owner Scott Ficarra can be found behind the bar while patrons sip beers. Outside, a food truck serves up bites and outdoor seating is available. Large flat-screen televisions dot the walls and a garage-door-style door allows easy access to and from the food truck. A new large blue and white sign out front announces to anyone confused about the change that Salt Road Brewing is now here to stay.

The popular space at 321 Old Firehouse Alley features an array of farmhouse-inspired brews from the old world.

The brewery's name is derived from a throughway in Europe known as the Alte Salzstraße, or Salt Road. During the Middle Ages, salt was a hot commodity and was used in preserving food. Today it is used in not just the ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NB: O’Creek Brewing launches full-scale brewery and taproom in Moncton
Almost exactly five years after launching as a home-based operation, O’Creek Brewing has opened a full-scale brewery and taproom location in Moncton, the Canadian Beer News reported on May 23.

O’Creek was founded in 2018 by Patrice Daigle, who initially brewed on a 1-barrel system in his basement for limited draught-only releases, and later shifted to contract production at CAVOK Brewing in Dieppe in order to enter the retail market with canned beer.

Plans for the new facility were announced last autumn, when it was noted that three partners – John Gonzales, Greg McAfee, and Nick Spataro – had joined Daigle for the expansion.

Open to the public since last week, the new 5,000-square-foot facility features a 100-seat taproom, large patio, retail shop, event space, and The Craft Canteen kitchen with food curated by chef Jon Morrison.

O’Creek Brewing is located at 175 Barker Street in Moncton, and opens at 12:00 noon daily, closing at 9:00 PM on Sunday to Wednesday, and 12:00 midnight Thursday to Saturday.

Brewery news USA, MD & NY: Flying Dog Brewery announces sale to New York’s FX Matt Brewing Company
Frederick’s Flying Dog Brewery is being sold to New York’s FX Matt Brewing Company and will shift all its operations from Maryland to New York, the companies announced on May 22.

Flying Dog CEO Jim Caruso could not be immediately reached for comment, but said in a statement that while “Frederick is a great place to live and do business, unfortunately even though we have invested millions of dollars in the brewery, it has too many limitations and puts Flying Dog at too great a competitive disadvantage.”

Flying Dog will cease all production in Maryland by August, but plans to build an “innovation brewery” in Frederick. The company also operates a taproom at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

The news comes at a time of upheaval for Maryland’s brewing industry. Beverage giant Diageo is preparing to end manufacturing next month of Guinness Baltimore Blonde and other products in the state as it shutters its Halethorpe facility. And several other area brewers have shut down during the pandemic amid a shift in consumption patterns.

Flying Dog’s chief marketing officer Ben Savage alluded to the shifting sales environment in the statement on May 22, saying that the sale to FX Matt Brewing Company “gives our brand ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Pondaseta Brewing Company to expand to second location in Canyon
The City of Canyon and the Canyon Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) announced an agreement last week for Amarillo-based Pondaseta Brewing Company to expand to a second location in Canyon at the historic Sante Fe Depot on 2nd Avenue, the Amarillo Globe-News reported on May 22.

Trevor Martin and Kaleb West, who are originally from Canyon, have been looking for a second location to increase their production capacity to expand the distribution of their products in the state. The pair met from a family friend and formed a Texas country band together in college called the Newton Road Ramblers.

According to West, Pondaseta is already the largest brewery in the Panhandle, and this expansion will give them the ability to produce twice as much beer in the short term, with the space and capability to increase it tenfold in the future. Currently, the brewery serves about 85 clients and self-distributes its product across Amarillo, Canyon and Lubbock. The new capability will be able to produce about 3,000 barrels of beer.

Martin and West both got started brewing their beer at home. They moved into their current location on 45th Avenue near Coulter Street, which is a converted auto shop that utilizes its large garage ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Ireland passes legislation requiring health warnings on alcohol products
Ireland passed legislation on May 22 that will make it the first country in the world to require health warnings on alcohol products. The warning labels are expected to detail the dangers of drinking while pregnant, related cancer information, and the risks of liver disease from drinking, the Seeking Alpha reported.

The new legislation, which was signed into law by health minister Stephen Donnelly, also includes a requirement that alcohol warnings be posted at pubs and restaurants where alcohol is served. However, it will be a few years before any impact may be felt in the industry, with the new legislation not scheduled to go into effect until May of 2026.

"This law is designed to give all of us as consumers a better understanding of the alcohol content and health risks associated with consuming alcohol," noted Donnelly. Irish health department officials have also maintained the regulations only bring alcohol products in line with requirements for food packaging.

The Ireland alcohol warning plan has already seen protests from Italy, Spain and six other EU member states due to the potential issues it could create. Outside the EU, complaints about the new requirement have also been filed with the World Trade Organization by UK, ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand: Brewer-turned-politician fighting to overhaul Thai beer market’s duopoly
A beer-loving lawmaker in Thailand once arrested for illegal brewing is hoping his party's election win can give him a long-awaited shot at breaking up a $14 billion alcohol duopoly of two of the country's wealthiest families, Reuters reported on May 23.

Brewer-turned-politician Taopiphop Limjittrakorn has been fighting to overhaul strict regulations for years, taking on Boon Rawd Brewery and ThaiBev, which have long had a stranglehold on the production of alcohol.

He is a member of the progressive Move Forward party, which is pushing to form the next government after winning the most seats in a May 14 general election. It reached an agreement on Monday with prospective coalition partners that include measures to "abolish monopolies and promote fair competition in all industries, such as alcoholic beverages".

Although the single-largest party, the prospect of a Move Forward-led government is still uncertain due to a built-in constitutional provision that favours military-linked parties.

"The progressive alcohol bill is not only a bill, it is a political project," said Taopiphop, 34, who was re-elected in a Bangkok district, in an interview at his bar.

"Now, I'm gathering all the stakeholders in this policy to make it happen as smoothly as I can because I realise that we ...More info on site
