Brewery news USA, OH: The Brew Kettle announces acquisition of Canton Brewing Co.
The Brew Kettle is doubling down on its presence in Canton with the purchase of Canton Brewing Co., the Canton Repository reported on May 26.

The brewery — which was founded in 1995 and is known for beers such as White Rajah and Major Lager — has brewpub locations throughout Northeast Ohio and a production brewery in Strongsville. It also is opening a Brew Kettle site at the nearby Hall of Fame Village in Canton.

It paid $710,000 for the Canton Brewing building and business at 227 Market Ave. N, according to Stark County property records. The initial listing price was $1.45 million.

The Brew Kettle made the purchase with the limited liability company CBC Property Co. Owner Bryan Weber said he's familiar with the brewing system in the former Canton Brewing and intends to rebrand the brewery and restaurant, incorporating it into the revitalized downtown.

"We're making a large investment in Canton," he said.

The brewery sits next to Centennial Plaza, which has become the centerpiece for downtown events. The nearby Renkert Building also is being renovated into the Century Plaza Hotel, which will operate under the Marriott brand, and a building around the corner is being converted into market-rate apartments.

Brewery news USA, KY: Awry Brewing Co. eyeing summer opening in Louisville
Over the last decade, Alex Vogt, Tom Bartle and Tyler Martin have been working toward their dream of owning and running a craft brewery.

However, each time the trio started to make progress, things went awry, the Courier-Journal reported on May 24.

"I feel like every time we've made a little headway, we've always been pushed back a little and after a few years, we didn't give up on the project,” Martin said. “We've always been passionate about it.”

After more than 15 failed business partners, 14 different business names, four incomplete deals, and countless nights drinking beer trying to solve their problems, the group will finally open Awry Brewing Co. at 1025 Barret Ave. in the former V-Grits building this summer.

After sitting around one night, discussing the loss of yet another deal, one of the three jokingly said "things kept going awry." As the inside joke grew, Bartle kept tossing the word “awry” around to describe their situation, and eventually, the three landed on Awry Brewing Co. as the brewery's name.

“It just stuck,” Martin said.

The craft brewery will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and until midnight on Friday and Saturday. The building is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: Owner of Striped Pig Distillery acquires majority stake in Ghost Monkey Brewery
Pixie Paula Dezzutti, owner of Charleston’s first distillery, the Striped Pig Distillery (SPD), announced the acquisition of a majority stake in Ghost Monkey Brewery (GMB), a Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, based craft brewery (opened in 2016), the Craft Brewing Business reported on May 24.

“I’m thrilled about this business venture,” said Striped Pig CEO Dezzutti. “After searching for the perfect partner for a local beer collaboration and being so lucky to find the amazingly talented team at Ghost Monkey who share so many of our family business values, investing in the future of hospitality in Charleston is the natural next step to elevating GMB to the global level.”

The local companies are already collaborating on innovative product releases, with a Bourbon inspired launch in the works. On International Beer Day last year, the woman-owned, family-operated distillery announced its first project with the brewery and the release of a special edition beer called “New BeGINnings,” a Belgian Wit style beer invoking the distinct botanical blends of Striped Pig’s best selling, award-winning gin.

“This move to bring the companies closer together only made sense,” said remaining operating partner and brew mastermind John Kosky.

As an active investor in the food and beverage real estate space, Dezzutti ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Second craft brewing company on tap for Brookfield
The 9500 block of Ogden Avenue in Brookfield will be home to a second craft brewing company in the coming months, after the new owners of the former Congress Park Community Hall building at 9509 Ogden Ave. complete renovations, the Riverside-Brookfield Landmark reported on May 23.

In March, a company called Koblish Properties LLC purchased the building for $185,000 from a real estate trust connected to the owners of Panel Window Company Inc., which had operated at that address for decades.

The property is across the street from Imperial Oak Brewing, which opened its doors in 2021.

The manager of Koblish Properties is listed in Illinois Secretary of State records as James Koblish, of LaGrange Park. He’s also one of three managers of Bevmasters LLC, which operates under the name Hop District Community Brewers, a craft beer producer which opened a brewery and taproom room at 23 E. 31st St. in LaGrange Park in 2022.

Attempts to get more information on what’s planned for the Brookfield property from Hop District by phone and email were not successful.

Hop District celebrated its first anniversary at its location at the northwest corner of 31st Street and Meadowcrest Road on May 20. Earlier this month, the taproom started ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Oriental Brewery still market leader despite HiteJinro’s efforts to dethrone it
South Korea’s top liquor maker HiteJinro Co. launched its new beer Kelly last month and has been aggressively carrying out promotions, but it has not been able to bring about a seismic change in the industry, the Pulse News Korea reported on May 26.

According to market research firm Nielsen IQ Korea and industry sources on May 25, Oriental Brewery (OB) Co. accounted for 53.9 percent of the country’s household beer market in April, slightly down from 54.2 percent in March.

Its rival HiteJinro that launched a new lager last month accounted for 24.3 percent in April, up by a marginal 0.4 percentage point from 23.9 percent in March.

By individual beer brand, OB’s Cass Fresh dominated the market with a commanding share of 42.6 percent, followed by HiteJinro’s Terra with about 20 percent. Lotte Chilsung Beverage Co.’s Kloud took up about 5 percent and Kelly captured a modest share of about 3 percent.

OB continued its market leadership in April, demonstrating a gap of more than twice that of the second-ranked competitor in the household beer market, said an official from OB.

HiteJinro had maintained its leading position in the domestic market with its Hite beer brand until 2012 before giving away its place ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium & the Netherlands: Three Trappist Westvleteren beers to become available in independent Dutch liquor stores to tackle illegal resale
Belgian monks have responded to Trappist beers being illegally resold at high prices by making changes to how their beers are obtained, The Drinks Business reported on May 25.

After discovering their beers were being legally resold at inflated prices in other countries, the brothers of Belgium’s Saint-Sixtus Abbey have made moves to remind people that Trappist beer is not brewed for the benefit of profiteers.

Until now, the sale of Trappist beer from Saint-Sixtus Abbey has been strictly regulated and has previously only truly been available to private individuals able to collect their orders at the abbey door or a nearby visitor centre. Back in 2021, the abbey initially trialled a pilot home delivery project, taking orders of a maximum of one crate of beer to customers with an address in Belgium, but it was not enough to quell demand and profiteering rackets have pushed the abbey to adapt its rules for a trial period of a year to try to stamp out illegal sales.

To tackle the issue, this week, the abbey revealed plans for its three beers — Trappist Westvleteren Blond, Trappist Westvleteren VIII, and Trappist Westvleteren XII — to be sold in independent Dutch liquor stores for a year ...More info on site
