Brewery news USA, FL: Funky Buddha Lounge & Brewery reacquired by original owners
Funky Buddha Lounge & Brewery said on May 26 that Constellation Brands has agreed to sell the beer company to its original co-founders, MarketWatch reported.

The reacquisition of the company, bought by the beverage group Constellation Brands in 2017, is targeted for June.

Funky Buddha Brewery's flagship beer portfolio, including Floridian and Hop Gun, will remain available for distribution, the company said.

"As we embark on the next chapter, we plan to push boundaries and create entirely new drinking experiences in beer and beyond," Co-Founder Ryan Sentz said.

The company didn't disclose financial details on the transaction.

Brewery news USA, IL: Good Times Brewery to open in Lakeview on June 1
A new brewery is moving into the former Smylie Brothers Brewing Company spot in Lakeview, the Block Club Chicago reported on May 26.

Good Times Brewery, 3827 N. Broadway, opens June 1. It’s from the owners of the Pancake Cafe and Aji, two restaurants just south of the building that have the same landlord.

“We’re so excited to be here and look forward to opening and being involved in the local community,” said Chris Peterson, operations manager.

The 10,000-square-foot restaurant houses its own brewery, which will be used for the first time by Good Times, Peterson said. The restaurant also has a private event area that holds up to 190 people, as well as capacity for 338 guests across the sprawling dining room.

Good Times’ main bar overlooks the brewhouse, so visitors can watch the brewery in action while enjoying their food and drinks.

The restaurant also has a dog-friendly area, Peterson said.

“We plan on separating it into areas with the main focus on the first dining room,” Peterson said. “The private event space is also very important to us, and we’ve already booked events in it, like a retirement party for teachers down the street and other community organizations.”

Brewery news USA, KS: Friction Beer Co. soon to be added to Shawnee’s craft beer scene
The heart of downtown Shawnee is well on its way to becoming known for its drink scene. James Beard Award finalist and cocktail bar Drastic Measures has been a major draw, bringing hipsters to the area. And now Friction Beer Co. is soon to be added to Shawnee’s bar roster when it opens the end of May (11018 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS), the Kansas City Magazine reported on May 27.

The craft brewery is the brainchild of brewer Nathan Ryerson who partnered with former Boulevard Brewing Creative Director, Brent Anderson. Ryerson also operates a popular YouTube beer review channel “Behind the Bar.” The two are excited to bring their concept to life after years of shelving it.

Friction’s taproom will brew primarily pilsners, pale ales, double IPAs and stouts. Music is a large inspiration for both the owners, a passion that is seen on one of the taproom’s walls. It’s covered entirely in cassette tapes.

“We’re putting a ton of effort into making the taproom a space that becomes a hub of the community, but also one in which people want to hang out because it’s unlike anything else in the area,” says Anderson.

“There are tons of custom design elements ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Eleventhree Brewing Co. targeting summer opening date
If it wasn’t for a typo, Dave and Chelsea Wickman might have started Eleventhree Brewing Co. in another part of Northeast Ohio, Cleveland.com reported on May 29.

The couple had sought a location for about five years. One night, Dave was scouting a place for dinner online.

“This popped up accidentally,” he said. “I was on Facebook trying to look for specials at one of the restaurants downtown. I mistyped the URL and went to Marketplace for whatever reason. “A 1,600-square-foot warehouse space in Chardon, Ohio.” I was, ‘Wait, what? You’ve got to be kidding me.’ "

They had met with “tons of property owners and landlords,” Chelsea said. “We wanted Chardon, but there just really wasn’t anything available for what we were looking for.”

Boutique spaces on the square were too small to accommodate brewing equipment. And 5,000-square-foot warehouses were too big for a start-up brewery. But the 1,600 square-foot spot on Cherry Avenue was perfect for them.

Target opening date is this summer. The couple is in the final stages – waiting on permits, installing taps and lining up food trucks.

Brewery news USA, OK: Prairie Artisan Ales coming to Edmond
A new brewery and taproom is coming to Edmond through a public-private partnership designed to increase activity at the downtown Festival Market Place, The Journal Report said on May 27.

The city-owned plaza – located along First Street just east of the railroad tracks – hosts the Edmond Farmer’s Market on Saturdays from April through October and occasional community events but has no consistent programming or activities.

City leaders decided last fall to seek a private partner to open a business at the site to increase activity there, especially in the evenings.

The City Council approved this month a ground lease with Lap 7 Development for a roughly 5,000-square-foot parcel where a storage shed is located. The shed will come down and the site will become home to a second Prairie Artisan Ales taproom. The company has operated a taproom in Oklahoma City’s Automobile Alley since 2017.

Krebs Brewing Co., owned and operated by fourth-generation brewer Zach Prichard, brews Prairie Artisan Ales and Choc Beer Co. products at its location in McAlester.

“It’s an Oklahoma brewery with a national brand,” said Andy Conyers, Edmond’s assistant city manager for administration. “It’s exciting to bring something like this to downtown that will add to all the momentum ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Kensington Brewing Company to reopen its Toronto location
Kensington Brewing Company has announced that its original location in Toronto’s Kensington Market which closed earlier this year will soon be reopening, the Canadian Beer News reported on May 29.

As reported last month, Kensington was purchased in early 2023 by Mascot Brewery, and its locations in both Toronto and Vaughan were subsequently closed to the public.

However, a new statement from Mascot confirms that the “new ownership quietly continued brewing out of their Edgeley Blvd location in Vaughan”, while the space in Toronto has been undergoing renovations.

“The goal of purchasing Kensington Brewing Co. was to better service our community by supporting the growth and production of locally brewed high-quality beers, and to create an additional space where people can feel like they belong,” says Aaron Protho, owner of Mascot Brewery. “This partnership supports and streamlines production efforts while maintaining fresh and exciting products that align with each individual brewery.”

As part of the renovations, the main brewhouse has been removed from the Toronto location. A nano-brewing system is being installed for the production of small batch beers, but primary brands such as Baldwin FishEYE PA and Augusta Ale will now be brewed exclusively in Vaughan.

The Kensington Market taproom will also be the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Downtown Olympia’s Fish Tale Brew Pub to close for good
Fish Tale Brew Pub, downtown Olympia’s first brewpub and a fixture on Jefferson Street in for decades, will close, the business announced via social media.

“Our current lease expires at the end of June, and unfortunately, we were not able to come to agreement with our landlords after much back-and-forth on a lease renewal,” the owners wrote in an Instagram post. “Although this is not the outcome we had hoped for, it is the reality we must face. Our last day of operation will be Sunday, June 25.”

The Olympian was unable to reach business owner Josh Carrigan or the landlords, who have ties to a limited liability company called Solberg Brothers.

In late 2019, Carrigan and his wife, Kate Craig, acquired Fish Brewing Co., including the Fish Tale Brew Pub, out of a bankruptcy-like process known as receivership. Later, they decided to vacate the brewing space across from the pub and relocate it, although it’s not clear if that happened.

In their post, the owners thanked the staff and the community.

“These have been opportunities to adapt and evolve to grow, and we are so proud of our staff and management and how they have risen to the occasion to ...More info on site

Brewery news New Zealand: Second-largest alcohol excise tax increase to be a major blow for brewing industry
New Zealand’s Government has announced it will be introducing the second-largest alcohol excise tax increase in 30 years, 1News reported on May 30.

The tax will be increased by 6.65% after a record 6.92% increase last year.

For brewers, it’s another blow to an industry battling to keep up with inflation.

The Brewer’s Association of New Zealand’s Dylan Firth told Breakfast the increase is “pretty difficult” for people in his industry - given current inflation rates.

“It’s one of those things that we can kind of see coming with inflation,” he said.

“So we signalled pretty early with the Government that we can see it happen, and we would like to have a conversation about potentially trying to do something about it.”

He said that while the level of tax is within the Government’s discretion, the cost of business is rising - and it will become harder for brewers to make their products.

“It’s not just producing the product. It’s buying the goods.

“When they’ve got a discretionary option to raise tax if they could raise it by a smaller amount, we’ll look at it.”

Firth wants to see things like lower taxes for kegs at hospitality venues - which has been practised overseas.

“We’ve seen that in the UK, ...More info on site

Brewery news The Netherlands & Mexico: Heineken N.V. to participate in second shares sell-down by FEMSA
Heineken N.V. (HEINEKEN) has noted the announcement on May 30 by Fomento Económico Mexicano, S.A.B. de C.V. (FEMSA) that it has launched an offering of existing issued ordinary shares of both HEINEKEN and Heineken Holding N.V. in the total amount of approximately EUR 3.3 billion (the “FEMSA Equity Offering”) and an offering of senior unsecured exchangeable bonds in the aggregate principal amount of up to EUR 250 million, exchangeable into shares of Heineken Holding N.V.

HEINEKEN intends to participate by purchasing HEINEKEN and Heineken Holding N.V. shares for an amount of 10% of the FEMSA Equity Offering, subject to certain conditions. HEINEKEN will fund the share purchase from existing cash resources and committed credit facilities. The impact on its net debt / EBITDA (beia) ratio is expected to be minimal and will be earnings-per-share accretive. Heineken Holding N.V.’s position as controlling shareholder in HEINEKEN will not be affected.

HEINEKEN and Heineken Holding N.V. will not be issuing or selling shares as part of the FEMSA Equity Offering and will not receive any proceeds from it.

Brewery news Ireland: Diageo confirms delisting from Euronext Dublin
Further to the announcements made on 13 April 2023 and 25 April 2023, Diageo plc confirmed on May 30 that the listing of Diageo’s ordinary shares (ISIN: GB0002374006) on Euronext Dublin has been cancelled with effect from 7.00 am, 30 May 2023.

The delisting will not affect Diageo’s listings on the London Stock Exchange (DGE) and the New York Stock Exchange (DEO). The delisting will also not have any impact on Diageo’s day-to-day operations in Ireland.

With immediate effect, Ireland is no longer considered to be Diageo’s EU Home Member State for the purposes of the EU Transparency Directive (Directive 2004/109/EC, as amended).

Brewery news Thailand: Proposed tax hike threatens nascent no-alcohol beer segment in Thailand
No-alcohol beer, with an alcohol by volume (ABV) between 0% and 0.5%, is a nascent segment in Thailand, accounting for a fraction of overall beer volumes in 2022. However, the threat of a tax hike in 2023 looms overhead. This can disrupt the recovery of the nascent segment from the pandemic-induced volume decline of 16.3% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) during 2017–22*, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Bobby Verghese, Consumer Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Several no-alcohol beer brands, such as Heineken 0.0, Hite Zero 0.0, Krombacher Weizen, and Bavaria Original have been introduced in Thailand in recent years. These products are positioned as better-for-you options with negligible alcohol content and a lower calorie count compared to regular beers. These brands target drinkers who are moderating their alcohol consumption or abstaining from it due to health concerns or lifestyle changes. Their marketing campaigns are thereby directed at young adults who have entered the legal drinking age, women, working-class urbanites, and active parents. ”

Tim Hill, Key Account Director at GlobalData Singapore, notes: “In late 2019, the Royal Thai Excise Department proposed to raise the tax on no-alcohol beers to prevent them from attracting novice drinkers. Though the tax hike ...More info on site

Barley news Russia: Russia to raise base price for calculating wheat, barley and maize export taxes
Russia will raise its base price for calculating wheat, barley and maize export taxes, according to a decree published on an official government website on May 27, Reuters reported.

The move should result in the duty itself decreasing. The decree comes into force on June 1.

The new base price for calculating the wheat export tax is set at 17,000 roubles ($218.73) per tonne, the document showed. It was previously at 15,000 roubles a tonne.

The base price for calculating barley and maize export taxes will also rise by 2,000 roubles to 15,875 roubles per tonne.

Whisky news Japan: Craft whisky maker Venture Whisky to build a new distillery in Hokkaido
Venture Whisky, the craft distiller known for its award-winning Ichiro's Malt whisky, will build a distillery in Hokkaido in northern Japan and start making grain whisky there as early as the spring of 2025, Nikkei Asia reported on May 28.

Founded in 2004, Venture Whisky has spearheaded a craft-whisky boom in Japan and has mentored other distillers in whisky making.

Ichiro's Malt was recently named the world's best blended, limited-release whiskey at the World Whiskies Awards 2023. It is one of the top brands of Japanese craft whiskies and its founder Ichiro Akuto is often described as a rock star of the Japanese whisky industry.

The company, located in the Saitama prefecture city of Chichibu, plans to acquire a 6.6-hectare site for the distillery south of Sapporo in the Tomakomai Eastern Area, an industrial zone that extends over parts of the port city of Tomakomai and the towns of Atsuma and Abira, and expects to produce about 2.4 million liters of grain whisky annually, using corn and other cereal grains.

The company says it began considering setting up a distillery in Hokkaido three to four years ago. It looked for a location near a port in view of the need to import raw materials ...More info on site
