Brewery news USA, NY: Preservation Beer Company poised to open this summer in Fairport
Preservation Beer Company is poised to open this summer in the latest expansion of the Cannery complex within the village of Fairport, the Democrat and Chronicle reported on June 5.

Village Manager Bryan White said that the brewery will be located at the western end of a 42,775-square-foot structure at 75 N. Main St., which is currently being revamped from a warehouse to create offices, restaurants, indoor pickleball courts and other retail space by developer Donahue Management.

State officials announced last month that the Cannery revitalization project will receive $1 million through the Restore New York Communities Initiative. The funds are some of more than $112.9 million being given to 70 projects, including $5 million to transform a pair of landmark buildings in Rochester into mixed-use developments.

The beer company will be operated by the team behind Lock 32 Brewing Co. in Pittsford and Seven Story Brewing in Bushnell's Basin, a popular craft brewery that is closing at the end of June because the landlords did not renew the business' lease.

The trio - owners Casey Dunlavey and Seth Clark, and brewmaster Phill MacArthur - on their new website shared that Preservation Beer Company is "a brand new beer experience dedicated to the preservation ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Portland’s Hammer & Stitch Brewing is for sale
Hammer & Stitch Brewing is for sale. The northwest Portland, Oregon brewery co-founded by esteemed veteran brewer Ben Dobler closed in December 2022 in what was said to be a temporary pause, the New School Beer reported on June 5.

One of the most hyped up breweries of 2019 AND 2020, Hammer & Stitch Brewing had the misfortune of having their opening so far delayed that it pushed it back into the early stages of the pandemic. Coupled with a less than ideal location across the busy NW Vaugh entry/exit to US Hwy 30, Hammer & Stitch could never quite rise above their problems even though the space was bright and welcoming and the beer was extremely well executed even if resolutely traditional and slightly old school.

After exploring a spring 2023 reopening, and then a possible second life as an events rental space, we learned Hammer & Stitch ownership has been quietly shopping it around for potential new owners but nothing that has panned out. On Tuesday, May 30th they went public, offerring the brewery, kitchen, and taproom as a turnkey startup to interested ventures.

It is actually a pretty sweet space and setup for a new brewery, or expansion of an ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Busted Sandal Brewing Company planning new location in Kerrville
The Texas Hill Country is known for having a plethora of wineries, but peppered into the rolling terrain are a variety of breweries. A San Antonio-based brewery is bringing its brand of craft beer to Kerrville with the company's third location, mySA reported on June 6.

Busted Sandal Brewing Company in San Antonio shared a cryptic social media post over the weekend that teased the new location in Kerrville.

The post simply read, "Coming Soon." It also had the longitude and latitude of the new location, which was 30°02'45.2"N and 99°08'28.9"W. That new location is at Water Street, Kerrville, TX 78028. The post added that an announcement will be made on July 1.

Some of the craft brews include the 210 Ale, which has an ABV of 6.1%, or the Slippery Rock IPA with an ABV of 7.1%, according to the Busted Sandal Brewing Company's year-round beer menu.

The original Busted Sandal Brewing Company is located at 7114 Oaklawn Drive, San Antonio, TX 78229. The brewery is open Wednesday through Friday from 4:30 to 10 p.m. On Saturdays the brewery is open from noon to 10 p.m. and from 2 to 8 p.m. on Sundays.

The second location can be found at 14743 Old Bandera ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Britannia Brewing Co. eyeing new location in Kelowna
A Lower Mainland craft beer company is expanding to Kelowna, InfoTel.ca reported on June 6.

Britannia Brewing Co. has locations in the Steveston neighbourhood of Richmond and in Ladner. It wants a pub/restaurant at 8999 Jim Bailey Rd. in the industrial north end of Kelowna bordering on Lake Country.

The location is 140 metres from Grey Fox Brewing, a brew pub that opened last December.

“The location at 8999 Jim Bailey Rd. is in a mixed use industrial area with many hard-working individuals that would welcome a beer after a long hard day,” says the liquor licence application filed with the City of Kelowna. “The area needs a positive social gathering hub and, as more residential projects unfold in the area, the brewery will provide a space to fill this void.”

And, while two breweries within walking distance of each other don’t make a brewery district, that’s how it started in another industrial area of Kelowna, at the northern end of downtown.

Kettle Valley Brewing opened there in July 2016, followed by Red Bird Brewing a year later. Now there are close to a dozen craft breweries and other liquor establishments within walking distance of each other.

Lake Country Brewing is a three-minute drive away from ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: MadTree Brewing announces plans to open third location in Blue Ash
One of Cincinnati’s biggest breweries may soon take root in Blue Ash. MadTree Brewing says the city council is set to vote on plans that would allow them to open a MadTree location in Summit Park, the Cincinnati CityBeat reported on June 7.

MadTree Parks & Rec would be the company’s third brewery/restaurant location. The team says they plan to continue their creative and sustainable traditions of taking an old space and repurposing it. In this case, the team would convert a 15,000 square-foot airplane hangar into an outdoor recreation destination, tying into the park’s green space and offering things like cornhole, plenty of seating outside and walking trails. The taproom would have indoor and outdoor areas, private rental space and cocktails, food and, of course, MadTree's specially crafted beer because, in the words of the great Ron Swanson, "Clear alcohols are for rich women on diets."

“This is a fantastic opportunity as it checks so many boxes for us like being an extension of an already fantastic park system, centrally located, and bringing a building back to life,” Brady Duncan, MadTree co-founder, said in a press release. “We love that people will be able to spend the whole day enjoying fun ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Inner Compass Brewing Company eyeing occupancy for mid to late August
Inner Compass Brewing Company has had its share of challenges since filing paperwork with Manatee County Building Services two years ago, the Bradenton Herald reported.

The latest came on June 1 when construction workers stayed home as part of the Day Without Immigrants protest against Florida’s new E-Verify law.

But Susan Carrubba, who with her husband, Rob, and their son, Robert, are opening the new dining destination on 1.6 acres of lakefront property at 10316 Technology Terrace in Lakewood Ranch, Brandenton, is philosophical.

“It’s been a process, but we are finally seeing the light at the of the tunnel,” she said.

No surprise, the pandemic and the ensuing labor shortage and supply chain issues were real challenges.

One example was a 600-amp electrical panel that took four months to receive. Another was a shortage of wooden trusses. The Carrubbas decided to use metal trusses instead.

The family is breathing easier these days with plenty of actual construction happening and a certificate of occupancy projected for mid to late August.

“It’s going to be so nice, calming and comfortable,” Susan said of the 7,500-square-foot facility that will provide craft beer, wine, food, games, entertainment, a beer garden and event room in a lodge-like ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Grains of Wrath Brewing opening third location in Washougal
Camas, Washington’s Grains of Wrath Brewing is making the Port of Washougal’s recently completed ‘Building 20’ the site of their third location. GOW will join the upcoming new brewery Recluse Brew Works in Building 20, which is just around the corner from the well-established 54-40 Brewing, the New School Beer reported on June 7.

“This opportunity presented itself in an ideal location, at an ideal time, when we are looking for ways to supply demands in front of us,” says Grains of Wrath co-owner/partner Brendan Greenen. “Growth & expansion is exciting when the opportunities arise and they make sense.”

Along with the recently opened Trap Door Brewing Washougal location, and lesser known Shoug Brewing, the Washougal site as an entrance to the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge is making it a thriving beer area. Based on statements from leading figures at the Port of Washougal, making the industrial area near Cottonwood Beach and Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife refuge, a hub for craft beverage makers is part of a longer term vision to bring more people and industry to the area. The growing industrial/commerce area is just off SR-14, 10 minutes from I-205 and 15 minutes to Portland International Airport. It ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Hidden Wit Brewing Co. on track to open at the end of the summer in Moseley
Nearly six years in the making, Hidden Wit Brewing Co., in the Moseley area of Chesterfield County, is on track to open at the end of the summer, the Richmond BizSense reported on June 8.

Construction is nearly complete on the 10-acre farm brewery at 21110 Hull Street Road. Inside the 10,000-square-foot building will be a tap room and dining area, event space, a full kitchen and a 20-barrel brewing system. The remaining land is being transformed into a patio with an outdoor bar, an turf lawn, a gazebo and a stage for live music.

The project is led by an ownership group of Virginia locals: Butch and Kim Taylor, Brad and Andrea Cooper, Jessica and Chad Ritter, and Dave Butler and Stephan Parry.

The Taylors are the majority owners. Butch led the project’s development and will continue to oversee the brewery’s growth. He also owns Titan Auto & Tire with his wife, Kim, who’s a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. Kim will handle advertising and events for Hidden Wit alongside Andrea Cooper, who also owns Midlothian brewery Steam Bell Beer Works with her husband, Brad.

Jessica Ritter is a designer at Glave & Holmes, the architecture firm that worked ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. opening its 4th Tucson location
Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. is opening its fourth location in the Valley, ABC15 Arizona reported on June 7.

The company made the announcement on social media, writing the new location will be in the heart of the historic Miracle Mile District near 14th Street and McDowell Road.

The new space will house a brewery, counter-service restaurant, and taproom.

The 10,000-square-foot brick and wood building was purchased by Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. and was a top spot in Phoenix in the 1940s and 50s, housing multiple buildings, including a piano store, a jeweler, a laundromat, and the legendary Stardust Tavern, according to the Facebook post.

The new location is one of four for AZ Wilderness.

The other locations are:

Arizona Wilderness Gilbert Brewpub: 721 N Arizona Ave, Gilbert, AZ 85233 Arizona Wilderness DTPHX: 201 E Roosevelt St, Phoenix, AZ 85004 The Arizona Woodnotes Celler: 912 N Colorado St, Gilbert, AZ 85233

The Wilderness Miracle Mile is expected to open in the fall of 2024.

Brewery news USA, TX: Neches Brewing Company to start manufacturing at new downtown Neches location
The Neches Brewing Company is expanding its brand and will start manufacturing in the downtown location where the previous Pour Brothers brewery was located on Wall Street and the corner of Neches, the Beaumont Enterprise reported on June 6.

“We are currently in the permitting process, so I’m hoping to start brewing in about three months,” said owner Tyler Blount. “It’s a turn-key purchase with the new location being initially utilized for manufacturing purposes to expand the brand in the community.”

The goal is to have the capability to accommodate local markets and bars, and this new location will help in those efforts, Blount explained.

“We are also looking to purchase the 100-year-old building across the street from the Port Neches location, but the downtown location makes more sense now, and we will expand from there,” he said.

The local brewing company wants to keep it local to Jefferson County and help grow the brand in the place and the community he calls home.

Blount explained that he worked in an office in downtown Beaumont selling insurance a decade ago. He would look out the window at the Pour Brothers brewery location and daydream about his future owning a brewery. He would later try ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Zymos Brewing’s new Littleton location to open this fall
Zymos Brewing will be opening its new brewery in the fall of 2023 — but now in Littleton, the Littleton Independent reported on June 8.

In 2020, they planned to be in the Mission Hill Mall at 88th and Wadsworth as a full brewery with 30 taps. They had to ditch those plans due to some issues they ran into.

Alex Tift, one of the owners, said the first was the zoning for the space. When they signed the lease, they didn’t know it wasn’t zoned for a brewery. It was originally zoned for restaurants and alcohol service.

They fit in a different category as a brewery, so they worked with the landlord and the city’s planning commission to update the zoning.

After, they got as far as submitting building permits and architectural drawings to get the construction process started. That’s when they ran into infrastructure issues.

Since they are an all-electric brewery, they needed to increase the electrical service voltage. They said if they used a natural gas system, it probably would’ve worked, but the upgrade cost was over $100,000 to be electric.

Another need was to upgrade their water service line. Since they are a brewery, they needed a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Frothy Beard Brewing Co. expanding to Charlotte in August
South Carolina-based Frothy Beard Brewing Co. — known for hosting fun events such as drag shows, NerdFest for gamers and cosplayers and Killer Queen League arcade play — is expanding to Charlotte in August, AOL reported on June 6.

“We are beyond excited to bring Frothy Beard to Charlotte,” co-owner Michael Biondi told CharlotteFive. “We are a community focused brewery and taproom that combines quality beer, great food and unique events in order to just have fun mixed with a bit of nostalgia for the ‘80s, ‘90s and nerd culture. With the new brewing space we will have the opportunity to add some fun new beers to our list for Charlotte to taste alongside our core beers and our specialty brews coming out of Charleston!”

The brewery got its start in Charleston and has a location in Summerville. Axios Charlotte first reported the news. In Charlotte, it will be moving in to the former Bhramari Brewing Co. spot in South End.

Brewery news USA, CO: Dos Luces Brewery announces closure later this summer
A Denver brewery is planning to close later this summer after what the owner calls a “tough five years” brewing and serving beer in the Mile High City, The Denver Post reported on June 6.

Judd Belstock, owner and founder of Dos Luces Brewery, announced the closure via social media on June 5, and while he doesn’t have a firm closing date, he plans to celebrate the business’ fifth anniversary on July 29 before closing up shop.

Belstock’s decision comes several months after a car crashed into Dos Luces’ storefront at 1236 S. Broadway in Denver.

“The car crashing into the brewery was one of those ‘aha’ moments,” Belstock told The Denver Post. “Like, do I really want to spend my life dealing with insurance companies and cleaning up dust? The day-to-day of running a taproom was wearing on me particularly.”

Opened in 2018, Dos Luces Brewery quickly garnered attention for its unique offerings, including Mexican and South American alcoholic beverages like chicha, tepache and pulque — all of which date back to pre-Columbian times.

Belstock’s original goal was to build a taproom that funded the production and distribution of his beers. However, “at this point everything else is funding the taproom,” he said.

Brewery news USA, GA: Second Self Beer Co. to close down for good on June 17
Second Self Beer Co. closes Saturday, June 17, after nine years on Logan Circle in Underwood Hills, according to its newsletter and an announcement on social media.

Owners and longtime friends Chris Doyle and Jason Santamaria say they fought to keep the brewery open for months, even reducing the number of days the taproom was open to two days a week. It wasn’t enough.

“After months of fighting and trying to make it work we are faced with the hard decision to close our doors for good,” the statement reads. “This doesn’t come easily or lightly but out of necessity.”

Despite efforts to cut operating costs, including focusing beer production on contract brewing for other breweries, Santamaria tells the Atlanta Business Chronicle that Second Self simply couldn’t rebound to its pre-pandemic revenue levels. He also points to a Georgia alcohol law that gives wholesale beer distributors franchise rights to a brewery’s products as a factor in the decision to close.

Santamaria tell the Chronicle 80 percent of the brewery’s revenue was coming from contracting out its facility for beer production. Second Self lost four of their six contract brewing customers over the last few months due to closures or shifting business to other breweries.

Brewery news UK: BrewDog reports operating loss of £24 mln
BrewDog has reported an operating loss of £24m in its latest trading update, but its founder retains “unshakeable confidence” in the Scottish brewery, The Morning Advertiser reported on June 9.

The Scottish brewer reported “record-breaking” revenues of £320m in 2022, up 13% from 2021 in a UK beer market which was down 12%.

However, there was also the multi-million-pound operating loss paired with the adjusted EBITDA of £600,000, which BrewDog founder James Watt attributes to the cost of investing in the brand, its people and its bars, alongside the “devastating” increase in input costs.

Q1 2023 sales were up 20% versus 2022, and BrewDog was ranked the world’s 14th most valuable beer brand by Brand Finance, overtaking Carlsberg for the first time.

BrewDog is the only UK beer brand ranked in the top 50, and has five of the Top 30 fastest growing beer brands in the UK, including Lost Lager, which is also the UK’s fastest growing craft beer brand.

Brewery news World: AB InBev renews its FIFA contract
Anheuser-Busch InBev is renewing its FIFA contract until 2026, according to the Associated Press. Budweiser will remain the official World Cup beer going into the soccer league’s upcoming international tournaments, VinePair reported on June 9.

Prior to the 2022 World Cup outside of Doha, Qatar last November, organizers changed alcohol restrictions at eight participating stadiums to prohibit beer sales within the venue. The highly-publicized policy reversal was announced a mere two days before the tournament’s kick-off.

FIFA reportedly was unable to intervene on behalf of Budweiser and other alcohol sponsors, per the Associated Press. However, FIFA president Gianni Infantini confirmed last November that the league still maintained a positive relationship with the brewer.

Under the renewed contract, AB InBev will be the official beverage sponsor of the FIFA Women’s World Cup later this year and FIFA World Cup 2026, as noted in a June 8 press release.

“As one of our longest standing sponsors, AB InBev’s investment will benefit the game, as well as football development all over the world, while bringing creativity and excitement to the experience that football fans will have during our most iconic tournaments,” FIFA chief business officer Romy Gai says in the release.

Financial terms of the contract renewal were ...More info on site

The brewery moved from Utrecht to nearby De Meern in 2001 because it could brew more beer at the new location. The demand for De Leckere beers continued to grow, and in 2018, the brewer moved back to Utrecht to an even larger brewery in the Werkspoorfabriek.

In retrospect, that move laid the foundation for the bankruptcy. It was delayed several times and ended up more expensive than expected, the directors told Gielen. The move may have worked out, but just over a year later, the coronavirus pandemic struck. For the next two years, catering establishments were forced to close several times during lockdowns, taking away De ...More info on site
